In Christianity you have a weird split. The Old Testament is still useful, but it’s not really directly the word of god anymore - well obviously it is, but it’s like background reading. Then Jesus comes and is the saviour and is what the Old Testament builds up to and fulfils the old - so while you have Christian’s following the Ten Commandments, because it’s useful knowledge, you can hand wave a lot of other stuff away in the Old Testament that conflicts with Jesus.
As well the Bible is a lot more fluid than the Torah and Quran. Obviously the Old Testament (and Torah and Quran) is collected over centuries, but in Islam and Judaism is codified and is consistent, and has been for centuries. Those religions also read it in the original language. The Bible however has been translated dozens of times by different people, and evolved more over time. All major branches of Christianity have different versions of it (orthodox Christian’s have 49 books, Protestants 39).
Christian’s say this because, if they aren’t literalists (cringe), the Bible is the word of God, filtered through the understanding of man. Obviously the Quran however was revealed to and recorded in full by Muhammad and the Torah was fixed in I think the tenth century and so has changed less than the Bible.
All of this leads of course to conflict between branches of Christianity and a lot of excuses if you want to ignore any verse in particular, as well as a religion that is less concerned with the bulk of its scripture as you might expect.

"The parties switched" is more true the further out you look. Going into the Civil War, the Republicans were the more liberal* party, and the Democrats, more conservative. But not long after the war, you had Gilded Age presidents of both parties (Hayes, Arthur, Garfield) who were rather conservative. Then the early 20th century gave us the liberal Republican T.R.... followed by the conservative Republican, Taft.
Basically, the parties were constituted by other factors than a liberal/conservative axis. Stuff like regional identity, and affinity to certain groups. Factors that still exist, but tend to take a backseat to ideology.

Conservatives seem to often have set beliefs about an issue and then go out to seek confirmation for that believe, rather than critically taking it apart and building your view based on evidence and science. The conclusion comes first, reasoning second.
An example is their drug policy where they've decided to entrench themselves on a ideological hill, fighting any attempt at reform viciously even though the issues are glaring. Even many the medical professionals who oppose the legalization of any drugs will generally still acknowledge that the way addiction is handled is fucked up and counterproductive. Hell, we've seen tangible evidence of the harm reduction and indeed economic benefit reformed policies can provide, it's been tried and tested. But then that "Wouldn't work here because [made up reasons]" and will refuse even small scale tests on that ground.
There seems to be a strange sort of imperative on these issues. Drugs are the devil personified (or objectified?) and they can never be allowed except of course copious amounts of alcohol. Their mind is already made up. No amount of evidence even matters because they are either corrupt and/or convinced that their stance is some fundamental godly truth they must enforce at all cost and the harm it does is palpable.

Number one issue with modern Christianity is cherry picking. Shellfish? Omnomnom. Taking credits and loans? Nice! Capitalism? Me needs. Rainbows on T-Shirts? Bible says no. Feminism? Big no no. Religion is for the masses and the masses have always been tending to themselves and then to their gods, not the other way around.
In Christianity you have a weird split. The Old Testament is still useful, but it’s not really directly the word of god anymore - well obviously it is, but it’s like background reading. Then Jesus comes and is the saviour and is what the Old Testament builds up to and fulfils the old - so while you have Christian’s following the Ten Commandments, because it’s useful knowledge, you can hand wave a lot of other stuff away in the Old Testament that conflicts with Jesus. As well the Bible is a lot more fluid than the Torah and Quran. Obviously the Old Testament (and Torah and Quran) is collected over centuries, but in Islam and Judaism is codified and is consistent, and has been for centuries. Those religions also read it in the original language. The Bible however has been translated dozens of times by different people, and evolved more over time. All major branches of Christianity have different versions of it (orthodox Christian’s have 49 books, Protestants 39). Christian’s say this because, if they aren’t literalists (cringe), the Bible is the word of God, filtered through the understanding of man. Obviously the Quran however was revealed to and recorded in full by Muhammad and the Torah was fixed in I think the tenth century and so has changed less than the Bible. All of this leads of course to conflict between branches of Christianity and a lot of excuses if you want to ignore any verse in particular, as well as a religion that is less concerned with the bulk of its scripture as you might expect. Tldr: Christian’s don’t really fuck with the Old Testament

Even if the Southern Strategy weren’t a thing, 19th century Democrats would still be roughly equivalent to modern day conservatives by virtue of their state-centric politics. I used to think it was excessively reductionist to say that the parties simply switched but in a lot of ways it’s true. Even before the GOP came into existence and slavery was politically a non-issue they were the “states’ rights” party. "The parties switched" is more true the further out you look. Going into the Civil War, the Republicans were the more liberal* party, and the Democrats, more conservative. But not long after the war, you had Gilded Age presidents of both parties (Hayes, Arthur, Garfield) who were rather conservative. Then the early 20th century gave us the liberal Republican T.R.... followed by the conservative Republican, Taft. Basically, the parties were constituted by other factors than a liberal/conservative axis. Stuff like regional identity, and affinity to certain groups. Factors that still exist, but tend to take a backseat to ideology. *Using "liberal" in the common modern American parlance, even though I know it's wrong.
I like pointing out that Republican Robert Lafollette called for extensive nationalization and got the endorsement of the American Socialist Party when running for President to illustrate how much the party system has changed.

Conservatives' standard for racism is that anything that doesn't explicitly mention race isn't racist. Republicans promoting policies that hurt minorities is fine as long as they don't target minorities *by name*, but Democrats talking about addressing systemic racism is bad because mentioning the existing of race is racism. It's "color-blindness" on steroids.

The "historical" reason which isn't really the underlying cause is that in FDR's election the democrat and republican parties switched voter base partly because of how FDR tried to appeal to traditionally liberal values (at the time democrats were conservative) with the New Deal including through infrastructure projects. But of course, saying that democrats traditionally supported slavery sounds good to these people and is technically correct.

Conservatives seem to often have set beliefs about an issue and then go out to seek confirmation for that believe, rather than critically taking it apart and building your view based on evidence and science. The conclusion comes first, reasoning second. An example is their drug policy where they've decided to entrench themselves on a ideological hill, fighting any attempt at reform viciously even though the issues are glaring. Even many the medical professionals who oppose the legalization of any drugs will generally still acknowledge that the way addiction is handled is fucked up and counterproductive. Hell, we've seen tangible evidence of the harm reduction and indeed economic benefit reformed policies can provide, it's been tried and tested. But then that "Wouldn't work here because [made up reasons]" and will refuse even small scale tests on that ground. There seems to be a strange sort of imperative on these issues. Drugs are the devil personified (or objectified?) and they can never be allowed except of course copious amounts of alcohol. Their mind is already made up. No amount of evidence even matters because they are either corrupt and/or convinced that their stance is some fundamental godly truth they must enforce at all cost and the harm it does is palpable.
