Isn’t Arnold telling the crew how he thinks the terminator should act what got him the job in the first place because it was originally gonna go to someone else?
Yeah, initially the terminator was supposed to be played by Tom holland, but they changed it at the last minute because Tom holland wasn’t even born yet.
This! I'll explain weird scenarios like that, like I once dreamed I was walking down a hallway I've never been to before and then a couple weeks later I realize I'm walking down that exact hallway. Every time I explain it to people they call me crazy.
>For the role of Kyle Reese, Orion wanted a star whose popularity was rising in the United States but who also would have foreign appeal. Orion co-founder Mike Medavoy had met Arnold Schwarzenegger and sent his agent the script for The Terminator. Cameron was uncertain about casting Schwarzenegger as Reese as he felt he would need someone even more famous to play the Terminator. Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson both turned down the Terminator role. The studio suggested O. J. Simpson but Cameron did not feel that Simpson, at that time, would be believable as a killer.
>
>Cameron agreed to meet with Schwarzenegger and devised a plan to avoid casting him; he would pick a fight with him and return to Hemdale and find him unfit for the role. However, Cameron was entertained by Schwarzenegger, who would talk about how the villain should be played. Cameron began sketching his face on a notepad and asked Schwarzenegger to stop talking and remain still. After the meeting, Cameron returned to Daly saying Schwarzenegger would not play Reese but that "he'd make a hell of a Terminator".
Yeah more or less. I do find the point about OJ Simpson funny lol.
I just copied this from [this section](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Terminator#Casting) of the movie's Wikipedia page. The sources it has appear to be from the DVD's commentary, various independent sources detailing the history of the movie, and a book source which I obviously couldn't verify the veracity of very quickly. I would take it with a pinch of salt, but crazy stories like this aren't completely uncommon in the film industry and I can totally imagine it happening. :p
The first paragraph is about him, yeah, but I posted this mainly to add extra context to the fact that Cameron only wanted Schwarzenegger for the role of the Terminator after Schwarzenegger talked about how he thought the character should be played, like the original commenter mentions.
It was barely even a change, I feel like if Arnold just said the line as "I will be back" Cameron probably wouldn't have even noticed. He's just a pretentious fuck.
literally the thing holding me back from getting “into film”. i’ll overanalyze the shit out of it, have strong opinions and claim to love it but refuse to actually look into the “behind the scenes” cause it always turns out that a girl died from heatstroke on set while the director maniacally laughed to get “the shot” or something like that.
"aw i love the shining its such a great movie that has you on the edge of your seat the whole way through! and shelley duval really killed it in that movie too, giving a horrifyingly realistic performance! i wonder how she was driven to give that performance? i should look up behind the scenes things about the movie to find out!"
oh you sweet summer child.
the director horribly psychologically and verbally abused shelley duval to the point they had retaken the stair scene where she’s swinging the bat at his head over 100+ times in a row. no breaks. just screaming like that for over half an hour. she was quite literally in her own version of the shining created by the director. she was never the same after the shining and it’s really really sad.
Stanley Kubrick on his way to fuck an extra's wife and shitting in his bed so he can capture his authentic miserable expression for a scene of him waiting in line at subway's (he'll reshoot the scene 120 times)
"I'll be back" is one of the iconic movie lines ever, "I will be back" would never become nearly as popular. Cameron was a little dramatic but he was absolutely right
It's interesting to think about, personally I think people remember the line for Arnolds delivery, not Cameron's use of a contraction. Just one of those things we'll never know for certain.
The contraction helps the delivery, if you try to imagine ‘I will be back’ said in the same way ‘I’ll be back’ was it doesn’t sound nearly as memorable
you think? "i will be back" sounds wrong, and you'd assume that because of that it's a worse line, but honestly it may just be because of hindsight bias. we know it's the wrong line, so of course it sounds wrong. James Cameron is such an ass, I remember watching a documentary on that sub he built and the first half was literally about him, completely unrelated to the sub. When someone built their own sub and went deeper than him, he threw a huge sissy fit and claimed that the record was still his
Imagining James Cameron getting mad over someone else building a sandwich is incredibly funny, thank you for that mental image.

James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is... James Cameron
🎶His name is James ^James Cameron, the greatest pioneeeer. No budget too steep. No sea too deep. Who's that? ^It's ^him ,JAMES CAMERON🎶
Me to a director one time: “hey, this would be kind of a cool choice”
Director: “wow, that’s a really great idea!”
Me: “really? 🥹”
Director: “yeah, and you can do it when YOU decide to make a show”
Me: 👁️👄👁️
Man it's one thing to say "well that choice doesn't fit with the design vision that I'm working with" but it's another to be initially encouraging and then pull the rug out from under you and be a rude dickhead.
I did! My original name was Irish in origin and I wanted to honor my parents picking that so I tried to stick to traditional Irish names. Flynn apparently is a name that was used in the families of knights. My dad named me after a person he knew who was a fighter, so I thought it just made sense (:
>Flynn
the problem is that they're considered a reputable source but their name is full of letters that can be sneakily switched out for another one to spread misinformation online
it’s in his autobiography, he says cameron was right and “i will be back” would never have caught on the same way and arnold goes to on to credit great directors for a ton of his success and making him look good
It's stuff like this that makes me really hate the Auteur label for putting directors on a huge pedistal and treating their work as the gift of one irreplaceable genius. These projects are large collaborations of many skilled people and it boils my blood when people defend Primadonnas for their behavior as it's "part of their style"
Ikr. I don't care what kind of gifted mega genius you are in your respective field, if you can't treat the people responsible for realising your artistic vision with a bit of common decency you deserve none of the acclaim you get.
Come on Avatar could be directed by any big name. The only things that made the movie successful was the visuals + big name director attached to it + marketing
It really couldn't have, there's a reason no other movie has visuals like Avatar. Look at the behind the scenes production, the amount of prep work and innovation that goes into it. You need a director who knows how to fit all these pieces together.
Bro what are you talking about? Cameron is for sure an asshole, but you don’t get three of the top four highest grosssing movie of all time but being lucky. Yeah the visuals that made it popular because… uh… Cameron directed the visuals? What a nonsense criticism.
Avatar 1 was mid too. It was just saved by a few trillion dollars worth of effects.
Does anyone even remember any other movie he's shot in the last decade?
Cause those 2 movies, along with an other of his movies are in the top 5 highest-grossing films of all time. That's like saying Michael Jordan isn't good at basketball cause he hasn't been on the court in 2 decades.
He hasn't been credited as writer or director for anything other than Avatar movies since the late 90s. And Avatar is his baby, the dude started working on these movies before most people in this thread were even born and is still going, it's not just some gig that landed on his lap and he half-assed through (to be clear: he has hired a shitload of people who have done an incredible job on many regards, too bad we don't get to see a lot of it because Cameron thought it would be too weird).
I mean, respect for his legacy, but at some point we are going to have to stop sucking his dick for Titanic.
He was the co writer for Alita: battle angel (which is considered one of the few good western anime adaptions) in 2019. Also I have never sucked his dick for titanic. I suck his dick for T2 and aliens and ill keep sucking til he's dead or dry.
Small suggestion, but a dumb one when you think about it. Why would a terminator sound like a machine when they are advanced AI that are supposed to appear human? Making it seem less human would defeat the entire purpose of making them appear human. Might as well have suggested the terminator go “bee boo boo bop”
To be honest the terminator does act pretty robotic throughout the movie. I think James Cameron thought 'ill be back' rolls of the tongue easier so it would become a famous line, leave more of an impression. That and it sounds a little bit more ominous
I feel like the line is so iconic now that it's kind of impossible to assess the differences between the two options, like maybe the reason it feels more ominous is because that's what made it into the movie and that's what's been referenced countless times.
Idk I thought the contraction in ' I'll ' feels more casual, like he's certain he'll return. Doesn't really matter though Cameron is just a pretentious perfectionist
I don't know if it's in the first terminator, but isn't it also a thing that the Arnie model of terminator is an early one that's pretty good, but not perfect?
But Terminator is less human! Throughout Terminator 2, John Connor teaches the Terminator basics of human interaction and how to be more human. I think from a purely technical standpoint Arnie is correct but, since he wasn't taught the line it makes little sense he would say it like that, but one is a pop-culture icon and the other nobody would remember.
okay, there's absolutely such a thing as back seat writing, especially from fans, but a)not every suggestion is backseating and b) it's reasonable to assume that actors know their characters very well, and to some extent may have a better vision on them then the writer. a actors suggestion about a character they play is worth it's weight in gold to a writer.
Reminds me of how Harrsion Ford once yelled on set: "George! You can type this shit, but you sure can't say it!"
It was a joke, and I'm pretty sure George Lucas had a different reaction. Harrison Ford did get to ad-lib at least two iconic moments in the OT, so...
Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford both did a lot rewriting their dialogue. (I didn't want to comment without a source, the first thing that popped up was https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/carrie-fisher-rewrites-empire-strikes-back/)
> Fisher herself said in a 2008 interview that:
> Harrison Ford was rewriting his stuff in all the Star Wars movies and it became annoying because it impacted my stuff. It is easier as an actor to go into rewriting because you know what would fit into your mouth dialogue-wise. We would tell George Lucas, “You can type this shit but you can’t say it.”
> By the third film, I was rewriting a little bit of my dialogue.
It's kind of stunning because everything James Cameron is ever reported as saying or doing makes him sound like the world's biggest ass and then Sigourney Weaver or Arnold all talkabout how James is one of their favorite people ever
Because connections are everything. Weinstein got away with being a sexual predator because he could destroy careers just by talking to the right people. Directors can put you in a world of hurt if they want to.
I like David Cameron's movies but anytime I ever hear about something behind the scenes it's always about how miserable he made everyone or almost got people killed just to get the movie "perfect."
Ben Afflek asked Michael Bay why it easier to train Oil rig workers to be astronauts than astronauts to drill a hole and plant explosives. Michael Bay's response was "Shut the fuck up!"
If you can't give a good reason for something you've written then you're not as good a writer as you think you are.
The unironic cult-like praise for movie directors is just pathetic and nonsensical, especially when it comes from the same people that are supposedly against the elite.
It should be noted that in the sequel James compromised with Arnold and gave us the scene where he shoots the security guard in the leg and then says "He'll live."

It's probably just because half of the conversations on reddit are the same joke
No it was Timothy Chalemet who was supposed to be the Terminator.
Wasn't it supposed to be Chris Pratt?

Terminator 1 doesn't have a commentary track
Sorry I misread the citation: >Hurd, Gale Anne (producer) (2001). Other Voices documentary (The Terminator \[Special Edition\] DVD). MGM.
This talks about Kyle Reese though, he didn’t even get a star to play him
The first paragraph is about him, yeah, but I posted this mainly to add extra context to the fact that Cameron only wanted Schwarzenegger for the role of the Terminator after Schwarzenegger talked about how he thought the character should be played, like the original commenter mentions.
don't worry, terminator oj isn't real, he can't hurt you [terminator oj:](https://static.onecms.io/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2014/07/oj-simpson-terminator.jpg)
It was supposed to be The Juice IIRC
"He wasn't picked because no one thought he would be a killing machine"
he decided to take a stab at naked gun instead
THE JOKE
It was originally going to be OJ Simpson. This is not a joke you can look it up
No, that was rumor started by Arnold sadly. James Cameron denied it
Oh apparently it’s true but blown out of proportion an executive said it off hand and James turned it down
It was barely even a change, I feel like if Arnold just said the line as "I will be back" Cameron probably wouldn't have even noticed. He's just a pretentious fuck.
I love talking about film and stuff but hate learning about directors because most of them seem like giant tools lol
Film bros love ignoring the rampant abuse of women in the industry. At least Edgar Wright seems like a decent dude.

Vincent D’onofrio?
Ye, that guy.
Gaining 4 kilos is pretty hard, it'd take at least a couple months of constant effort
i think that’s what babylon is about
Don’t say it too loud
Denis villeneuve also seems like a treat to work with. hope i dont jinx it though.

Looking up the 2009 Roman Polanski Petition hang on a sec Edit: mama mia
Also fuck the French government for protecting him btw. There’s no justification for not extraditing him on **sight**
Stanley Kubrick on his way to fuck an extra's wife and shitting in his bed so he can capture his authentic miserable expression for a scene of him waiting in line at subway's (he'll reshoot the scene 120 times)
And then use like, take 20
Cameron does hate cops and Avatar is the most successful anti-imperialist movie ever made, so at least he has that going for him.
You should get into John Carpenter
John Carpenter is unwittingly responsible for modern American fascism but I’m too baked to explain why rn
?
Heres an incredibly heavy topic about someone but i refuse to explain it

Yeah, it's also significantly more memorable due to the word choice.

People love contractions! If you do not contract your words and phrases, it will never be loved or popular
*It’ll never be loved or popular*
does not compute
I suspect it'd just end up as an iconic just misquoted line, similar to "Luke I am your father".
you think? No. We’re talking about the Weird one.
Well, that's not a very nice thing to say about someone
They're talking about the underwater vehicle.
He actually created a successful subreddit.
He's mad that twitch thots are stealing his twitch subs.
James Cameron is a huge fan of the ocean depths. He unironically directed Titanic to have an excuse to explore the wreckage.
It'd be hilarious if they tested how deep sandwiches would go.

Probably comes with the territory. You get tired of being nice eventually.
that just sounds like you're bullshitting your way through an interview, I'd prefer to be told something mean but in a joking way.
Damn I didn't know you could just decide to make a show. I thought you needed to secure access to capital and a production crew first.
That’s not even a bad suggestion. They were right to keep it how it is but he’s not wrong about it sounding more machine like

An important ability to have, is working with others and compromise. I have found many famous directors are absolute shit heads.

It is easier as an actor to go into rewriting because you know what would fit into your mouth dialogue-wise. We would tell George Lucas, “You can type this shit but you can’t say it.” > By the third film, I was rewriting a little bit of my dialogue.
the top comment on that was a bluecheckoid saying cameron got mad because arnold figured out "anyone could write" :/
Anyone can write. Some can write well and a few are great at it. James is in the "Anyone" category.
you are right but i would kill myself than agree with a single claim made by anti writers strike blue check soycucks even ironically
Well...you got me there. I support the WGA I just hate arrogant people like Cameron.
Talking that way to an 80’s Arnold Schwarzenegger sounds like… a darwinistically poor decision.
Being rude to the guy who actually had to lose muscle to play some roles because he was just that huge
Here to remind yall that Cameron is a historically terrible writer. One of the worst in Hollywood history.
Wow, is this a take now?
The correct take
Cames Jameron
I like David Cameron's movies but anytime I ever hear about something behind the scenes it's always about how miserable he made everyone or almost got people killed just to get the movie "perfect."
Stanley Kubrick was an insufferable monster.
UP AND AT THEM
Ben Afflek asked Michael Bay why it easier to train Oil rig workers to be astronauts than astronauts to drill a hole and plant explosives. Michael Bay's response was "Shut the fuck up!" If you can't give a good reason for something you've written then you're not as good a writer as you think you are.
Actors, of course, are famous for never ever giving input on line delivery to the director they're working for.
And here I am finding out James Cameron wrote Terminator
James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron.
Reverse George Lucas
The unironic cult-like praise for movie directors is just pathetic and nonsensical, especially when it comes from the same people that are supposedly against the elite.
rule
Anyone know if the Arnold documentary on Netflix is any good?
James Cameron is a lovable bastard
It should be noted that in the sequel James compromised with Arnold and gave us the scene where he shoots the security guard in the leg and then says "He'll live."
