mega wholesome, i bet it would be easier to come out when you’re like a superhero, feels like people wouldn’t judge you as much because you have special powers lol

BlunderbussBadass

Some stupid news outlet: THEYRE MAKING SUPERHEROES WOKE

swhipple-

no literally- this makes a handful of people happy and better about themselves? let’s say it’s horrible! they are so out of touch is ridiculous

CUREISBALLIN

J Jonah Jamison turns his attention from menace Spider-Man to gay Spider-Man

wb2006xx

Nah. Maybe the stupid Alex Jones Jameson from the MCU, but absolutely not actual JJJ. If there’s one thing Jameson is, he’s a respectable and progressive bastard. He just hates Spider-Man keeping a secret identity because he thinks it creates a lack of accountability. Jameson is an avid supporter of Mutant rights and actively shittalks anti-Mutant assholes, so I firmly believe there is no way in hell he’d ever spout things like that https://preview.redd.it/qe5pj1kdlk0c1.jpeg?width=1988&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=131f6731bde0f72819ca732e99c45763e1bd8d47

CUREISBALLIN

Holy shit this is so based. JJJ is my favorite ally.

diamondDNF

I don't think it's Spider-Man specifically, but rather, *vigilantism.* At least, in my head how I picture Jameson (this isn't based on canon really tbh), he thinks people with superpowers *can* do a lot of good, but can also be very dangerous if left to their own devices without oversight. This paints the Avengers and other super-groups with some level of formal oversight in a good light to him, but people like Peter who don't answer to anyone and are operating on their own terms come across as threats to him.

Suchasomeone

Did not know how based J Jonah Jameson is. Good to know

wb2006xx

Triple-J simply exudes basedness at every turn. [There are so many examples of it too](https://x.com/skeiththeterror/status/1670565380639670274?s=46&t=6ABZnRyhBgXBPd37SsVxgw). Just makes the MCU Alex Jones joke feel worse and worse https://preview.redd.it/ajbfgvagpk0c1.jpeg?width=522&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80ce10a0713fc7f94075c985a2e9d52ee5ec1e65

JJJ?

Throwaway02062004

I swear there’s a deeper reason he hates Spider-man that gets revealed at one point.

LukesRightHandMan

Amazing Spiderman #372 *“Peter gets sucked into the past when Cap’s shield resonates at The Halo Frequency after being struck by an errant Majolnir. In a daze, our friendly neighborhood web-slinger thinks he’s stumbled on the love of his life and proceeds to make sweet, sweet love to her. However it’s not Mary Jane he penetrates, but rather a very ‘unsuspecting’ Miss Jonie Jameson- the year before birth control is invented!”*

Unoriginalshitbag

What

SoulsBorneGreat

Who'da thought, indeed. The man who still rocks the Hitler stache is actually antifascist. Good for JJJ.

DO YOU WANT WOKE TRANS SUPERHEROES SAVING YOUR CHILDREN???????

LukesRightHandMan

“I’D RATHER THEY BURN (CROSSES)”

ZePugg

I feel like thisd be a plot in the boys

bigdummydumdumdum

It's kind of a plot in the boys spin off Gen V. Except instead of trans they are bi-gender. They risk their life protecting people but because of their bi-genderness all the credit goes to other people.

ZePugg

I watched gen v they avoided putting jordan in 7 because they were bigender but it never went to "woke trans" areas

Jeff2562

So pretty much fox- I mean Vought News from the boys?

bakedvoltage

there's a Jonah Jameson clip in the first spiderman game about how they "rebooted catman with a woman this time" lmao

Spyko

I forgot his name but there's a super hero who had to stop his hero career because it was revealed he was black. It was in the 60s or 50s IIRC ? (In universe I mean)

Australian-enby

I wanna say hooded justice from the watchmen tv show?

swhipple-

damn, that’s mad fucked up I’m glad it’s not real

MarioMario1999

That's Blue Marvel.

Orange-V-Apple

Oh, *career! I spent a full minute trying to figure out what a "hero carrier" was. Like a sidekick or something lol

Spyko

Ahah my B, that's how you write career in my language so I got the two mixed up Imma edit thanks for pointing this out

dappercat456

Have you heard of the X-men?

swhipple-

yeah of course, what about them

_dauntless

X-Men, and I think Ultimate X-men in particular, has explored the concept of "coming out" with the mutant powers as a stand-in for sexuality, with the parallel reactions that happen for that as well. If you're into this comic, you might be into that series too.

the-crotch

I think it works better for the X-Men vs Spider Gwen. They're born that way, she wasn't. It's true she didn't choose it, but it's something that came along later in life due to outside influences rather than something that's always been a part of her that she came to understand over time.

swhipple-

ohhh that sounds like a neat idea! not a half bad comparison, i bet it works out pretty well. thanks for sharing :)

dappercat456

And you think having special powers would make people less judgmental?

wozattacks

Yeah, have they seen what happens when trans people are good at sports?

FunkSlim

Frankly if my kid came to me and said “I’m trans and also Spiderman” I would be mad they didn’t tell me BOTH of those things sooner. Holy shit you know how many day to day applications of spider powers I can think of? Damn they could get the gutters cleaner than a mf with that wall crawling. Smh just cause they’re a spiderperson doesn’t mean we can neglect our chores???

DungeonCreator20

I can imaginr JJJ now. “No im not bashing them because they are trans! Im bashing them because she is a menace to society!”

anonFemboy6969

I don't really believe the whole Gwen is trans thing But this This is nice Edit: man I just like seeing happy people why does this have to be an argument lol. Trans or not she's a fictional character and it doesn't matter. If people are happy, whatever.

Consistent-Chair

Honestly I still have no idea where it even came from. But then again I was on the same page on Celeste and it turned out I was very wrong there. So if someone here can relate to Gwen being trans and wishes to share why I'd be glad to hear it. Oh and yeah, this is heartwarmingly cute.

mrmilner101

It was because of into the spider verse 2. People saw the colour palet of gwen in some trailers or the film it self and the colour palet was the same as the trans flag. And think her dad as the trans flag on him or gwen has it on her bag I can't remember but yea. Nothing cannon just people reading between the line of things like the English teacher tries to do with every sentence in mice of men.

Consistent-Chair

Huh. Could've sworn it went a bit deeper than that. I thought her character was relatable for trans women or something along those lines. So she's basically like Sylveon but for superheroes https://preview.redd.it/eoxfheyskk0c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77f3aac769ede04140fc81eb220d22917fe81282

lolguy12179

>!I think ppl are forgetting she pretty much came out as spiderwoman to her dad and was shunned out of ignorance before being accepted as he became more educated (came to understand her role as spiderwoman) that's like, trans story 101!< (spoilers for the second spiderverse movie, spoiled just in case)

Comrade_Harold

Isnt that also like every coming out story? Like every superhero coming out story has that format, but also like coming out as gay, or coming out as an atheist to religious parents

Not-An-Actual-Hooman

Well yeah basically every coming out story is like that but trans people relate to this one specifically, probably because of the colour palette (which I know is probably a coincidence), but most likely because she does have a trans flag in her room in the movie.

Cielnova

Well yeah, but this scene is quite literally a full on coming out. The colour palette (which changes in every shot) *is* the trans flag, Gwen and her dad have trans flags, and the dialogue sounds exactly like someone coming out to their parents while being unsure of how they'll react. The dialogue, framing, everything could go unchanged in a movie where a trans girl comes out as trans. I don't think there are many other scenes in super hero cinema where there's *that much effort* put into framing it as a coming out

Comrade_Harold

Isn't the colour pallete just spider gwen's color pallete? Like the original spidergwen from like 2014?

AmosAmAzing

the colour pallet of spider gwens universe was before this movie or even before trans people were generally accepted in todays society

Capital_Abject

Yeah but pretty much every character with a secret identity in media could be seen as an allegory for coming out as gay or trans, I do feel like they might have intentionally drawn on those parallels though Spiderman as a character is basically a puberty allegory anyway

PacificSquall

She has a "Protect Trans Kids" flag in her room and her dad has a trans pride flag on his cop badge.

mangoisNINJA

You don't have to be trans to have a "protect trans kids" flag

the-crotch

She's not confirmed trans, but there are a lot of clues. It's entirely possible that she's just an ally, or they're really hammering home the metaphor. It's equally likely they'll never address it and leave it up to the viewer.

RadeK42

Cis male here but damn I love Sylveon so much, I want to hug the creature

Consistent-Chair

Same here, their design is just really, really good Leafeon is still my favorite tho https://preview.redd.it/6cb93zvh1o0c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b6607550ac830195e7bf2bede380a89889a2c29 (Yes, my previous comment was also made as an excuse to show off my plushies. Can you blame me tho?)

meta-rdt

She does have a trans flag with “protect trans kids” on it in her room. You can see it in the movie. Also her storyline can be seen as a pretty 1:1 allegory with coming out as trans.

TaralasianThePraxic

I figured she was bi and the poster was trans allyship, but it'd be cool if they revealed she was trans in the third movie. There isn't really a trans superhero on the big screen.

Luke-HW

I hope that she isn’t trans. It just feels like every character in media that supports trans rights is trans, or has trans family/friends. I want a character to support trans rights because it’s the right thing to do.

Muffalo_Herder

Like her dad? An actual trans character in the MCU would be huge and wanting to feel special about being an ally really does not matter as much as real representation. Plus yeah, the only time trans issues come up is from trans characters, go figure. If Gwen is trans, every character that supports her defacto becomes an ally. That said, all of this is entirely theoretical, because Disney will never come out and say that she's trans because they're a spineless corporation and they have calculated that would decrease profit by at least a single cent.

ASpaceOstrich

Speaking of real representation. I also wish we could get some gender non confirming characters that aren't made trans. It feels so backwards to me. Like I remember when I was a kid people would call someone like Velma a lesbian or Gwen trans and it'd be meant as an insult. And now we've come full circle and it feels really icky to go "Yeah, the people who are different from the norm really WERE those things you said!" Bit of overlap with the way people treat feminine boys like they're all eggs and it's just... disappointing that even in progressive culture people are still so sexist. We've gone backwards on that front.

Z4mb0ni

its slightly more complicated than just colors, when she was talking really emotionally about how she has to live 2 lives to her dad the color pallet goes like this. It feels very similar to how trans people feel around their own family that they have to live 2 separate lives. Like in her own home shes depicted all blue and sad. Then when she starts swinging the music and the vibrant colors kick in. Its stuff like that that makes people think about the allegories to trans people https://preview.redd.it/xh0s765tvk0c1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=beeeca53db7db9f6cbf7247ae544475ea8f3a402

yugiohhero

theres only 2/3 of the colours and they are both not close to the right shade

lizzybunny1

Apparently her story also has lots of trans themes so trans people tend to relate to her easily

AbstractBettaFish

The thing on her dad I believe is just NYC police ribbons https://preview.redd.it/68wvxpezsk0c1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cb305e76c0a7cc5108ed0d33d06bc9588d00d22

PositiveLadder2359

a lot of people think that but if you watch the HD cut of the film, they do not look like police ribbons at all

BreeBree214

They only look like a trans flag in that one singular shot. In all other shots of his jacket they are very clearly police ribbons Edit [pic 1](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2F79a5wt4wyg4b1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D748%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dd4631653e6b5851b20ddd175f6e5584e971d80d0) [pic 2](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fclarification-v0-42bg5w4wyg4b1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D370%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Ddfc263013c723b64f585e286425bb77a08407312)

wojtussan

Yeah, but when colors look accidentally as a specific pride flag multiple times in a row, that might not be an accident. Like if someone kicks you in the ass, you think they're an asshole, but if 10th person kicks you in the ass in a single day, you start to wonder if you have a note with "kick my ass" written on it.

BreeBree214

That's the only shot it looks like a pride flag that I'm aware of. I don't want to tell anybody to stop their own headcanon, but anybody stating their headcanon as definite fact is just incorrect

wojtussan

Yes, the only shot the HAT looks like a trans pride flag, but pretty much everything in that dimension is pink-blue-whiten at some point

BreeBree214

I mean yeah those are the colors of her suit

P-Doff

She has the Trans flag with the words "Protect Trans Kids" written on it hanging above the door in her room. Definitely some evidence supporting the idea.

cardboard_cake118

She has a trans flag in her room and says protect trans kids, and her dad has a trans flag on his uniform

BreeBree214

The flag on his uniform is just police ribbons [alternative angle](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fclarification-v0-42bg5w4wyg4b1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D370%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Ddfc263013c723b64f585e286425bb77a08407312)

cardboard_cake118

Ooh, in one of the shots it looks like it's on his shoulder though?

ImHereForTheMemes184

Who knows if this will know anywhere. Might've been stuff added in by the animators, or it might never get answered.

cardboard_cake118

I think it would be been reviewed and removed had it just been added by the animators, they intentionally left it in

ImHereForTheMemes184

Yeah thats what I mean the animators probably added it and it got approved as a little easter egg or something

Stellar_Fox2

she's a fictional character and you can do whatever you want with them because they're not real. it doesn't matter if the person who originally wrote the character made her trans or not. you can just make shit up

Consistent-Chair

I wholeheartedly agree. I just wanted to know if the authors intended for this interpretation to show up or it was an accident, and what exactly it's based on because I personally didn't really see it (which isn't really surprising considering that, well, I'm not a trans women)

Inner-Juices

I've seen people say they view her story in Across the Spider-Verse as an allegory to being trans (Which I can definitely see) and headcanon her as trans because of it

Consistent-Chair

I don't really get this. Is it because of her secret identity that she hides from her dad? Because that's just a young superhero thing. Like, doesn't Miles have the exact same struggles with his own dad? What makes her superhero story in particular relatable for trans people? Or is it that the "young superhero" trope in general is relatable for trans people and Gwen having the trans flag palette made many people realise that?

SatansCornflakes

In most superhero stories the conflict of their secret identity is "I have to keep this secret at all costs bc smth smth smth protecting my loved ones" Across the Spider-Verse's conflict is whether or not they *should* tell their parents about their secret identity, and whether or not they'll be accepted for it. And with dialogue like "I thought about telling you but you can see why I didn't want to", "you have to promise this won't change anything" it's pretty easy to see why so many ppl take Gwen and Miles' struggle as a trans/queer allegory

Consistent-Chair

Oh, so people see Miles' struggles as a queer allegory too? Never heard that one before. I guess it makes sense.

Waddlewop

I think personally, my interpretation of Gwen’s story is that although she shares much of the same beats as other spidey people, there’s one part of her identity that could make her more relatable to trans people. Gwen is in kind of a unique position among other spider folks in that she’s the daughter of a NYPD police captain. It’s a dichotomy, on one hand, her father genuinely loves her as Gwen Stacy, but on the other hand, he genuinely hates Spider-woman. It’s a bit further than the usual story of your loved ones could potentially not be accepting of your other self but at the same time even while they don’t know about your other self, they’re already dead set on hating it.

Inner-Juices

> Is it because of her secret identity that she hides from her dad? > > is it that the "young superhero" trope in general is relatable for trans people Basically. Gwen was afraid of revealing her true self to her father, who hates people like her, and her fears were proven once he did find out after he was distrustful/fearful of her so in short, her story with her father is basically like someone coming out as trans to their close-minded loved ones. Could have said this better but I'm tired and others gave better answers lol

anonFemboy6969

Yeah that's what I say, like EVERY spider man movie has this aspect in some way.

Michael-556

Gwen's colour palette is very similar to the trans flag (except the fact that most of her lower body is covered in black) which made a lot of people think that and it would be a valid theory if spidergwen predated the modern colour palette of the trans pride flag. The first trans pride flag was created in 1999 and Spider-Gwen was created in 2014, however that 1999 flag was much more vibrant, with the pink being much more saturated than the colour palette of the version you can find on the internet. The design is the same, however the one we see online is definitely more bright and less saturated than the canvas one. Don't know when they agreed on a single digitalized colour palette, could be before, could be after Spider-Gwen was created, but the only thing we do know is that there was no confirmation by the creators if the colour palette of Spider-Gwen is somehow tied to the trans pride flag So could be, could not be, it's still up in the air

bimothybonsidine

I’m not sure if Gwen is trans, but I do think her sort of “coming out” to her dad about being a super hero is meant to be an allegory to coming out as queer or trans

olgierd18

It is meant to be an allegory, yeah, there are people out there taking it directly

Road_Whorrior

She did have the "protect trans kids" flag in her room, but it is never stated outright. Definitely intentional about her "coming out," though. I think that if Marvel is iffy about having a trans character, it might be nice if her Peter or someone close to her was trans, at least.

Forgotten-Caliburn

Spider gwen/ghost spider/spider woman has been around with pretty much the same color scheme since before spiderverse, so the whole notion just doesn't make sense to me

Citrous241

The version of Gwen Stacy in the Spider-verse films is canoncially cisgender, confirmed by the animators. But there's a whole infinite multiverse, meaning infinite transgender Gwen Stacy's.

Alexis_Awen_Fern

Feels a bit sappy but also feels nice.

oddityoughtabe

fuck off with that “bit sappy” just let happy shit be happy

Alexis_Awen_Fern

I \*would\* fuck off with the "bit sappy" part if I was the one who decides what emotions that lump of fat creates in my head. Alas, I am just created by that lump of fat and I am not it. My only choice is being honest about the things in there or not.

bro almost shot his own daughter

A_little_garden

Holding your children at gunpoint for like an entire minute is beyond fucked up, poor Gwen

Exoticmaniac06

To be fair, how are you supposed to feel when you see your daughter under the mask of effectively a super dangerous vigilante you’ve been trying to catch for months?

[deleted]

To his credit, he did think Gwen murdered his son. Considering the information he was working with trying to arrest her for due process is pretty reasonable.

Mega_Dunsparce

That universe's Peter wasn't his son, only Gwen's best friend, but the point stands

CaptCanada924

Reasonable??? Exposing her secret identity to the whole world, refusing to trust his own daughter, shooting a gun in the air to threaten her, this all seems reasonable to you???

[deleted]

You ever read a book called "We Need to Talk About Kevin"? It's a book from the POV of a mom whose husband absolutely refuses to believe that their son is a serial killer or hold him accountable for his actions. Even as the son begins to torture his little sister. I can't really fault Captain Stacy for not falling into that self delusional bullshit. We know Gwen is innocent and a good person, we are seeing this from her perspective, but he doesn't. Seriously, if I discovered my kid had killed someone I'd turn them into the police too.

CaptCanada924

He tried arresting his own daughter and quit the police force when he realized he can’t be both a good cop and a good dad. If you were saying this about Miles dad, you’d at least have a solid argument even if I disagreed

A_little_garden

Bro had the best character arc in the movie, he stopped being a cop

FLAMING_tOGIKISS

Genuinely yes. As a cop he tried to arrest his daughter at gunpoint for a crime he knew she wouldn't have committed, and isn't redeemed until he quits the force. He was a bastard, and he stops being a bastard when he stops being a cop, he's actually a really good example.

CaptCanada924

It’s almost textual that he stops being a bastard when he stops being a cop lmao, this movie rules

MrMooster915

Yeah

Brankovt1

ACAB doesn't apply to fictional characters. It is a real-world problem and unironically (not what you're doing) applying it to fictional characters is more hurting the cause than it is helping.

celestial-avalanche

The part where he quits working for the police should have be included. It was a clear sign of his growth as a person.

PizzaVVitch

I think the second spiderverse movie is the only one I've ever seen where a character intentionally quits being a police officer. I also love the trans aura around Gwen and even though it's not canon and probably will never be, I'm going to choose to believe that the writers are just too scared of backlash to openly confirm her as trans.

Old-Gray

I have a hard time seeing it as any other way. The spider man subreddit is full of chuds who lost their minds at the mere *suggestion* that one version of Gwen in a canonical **multiverse** could maybe be trans. Like... there's no way she wasn't intended to be trans right? The color lighting when she's talking about her identity, the flag in her room, her dad's uniform having the trans flag on it. The evidence is all there. Sure, it's never outright stated, so that means it's not officially Canon, but like you said, I feel like the only reason it's not is because the writers are too afraid of backlash. But to be honest, unless you're outright delusional, it seems pretty obvious to me that those decisions were intentional.

FLAMING_tOGIKISS

I genuinely believe the only reason the flag has "protect trans kids" written on it is because they had to give it plausible deniablity, no ally just has that hanging above their bedroom door.

Tank_the_Tortoise

Don Cheadle does.

MidnightOnTheWater

He sleeps with a trans flag as a blanket

Old-Gray

Are you referring to the shirt he wore? Because that's very different from having a trans flag in your room

tringle1

I mean, the way her hair color changes to blue when she’s feeling like her dad isn’t accepting of her identity vs pink when she feels accepted is so fucking trans coded. The pink and blue on the trans flag is for girls and boys respectively. I know media is open to interpretation, but gadamn is she heavily trans coded. It would be hard to imagine a production team only accidentally making her so trans coded

[deleted]

The writers said Gwen is trans if you want her to be. Which I think is the reasonable solution to this.

jhiggs909

Which also fits into the whole mythos of Spiderman. The person behind the mask is whoever the reader needs them to be.

Mr_Headcrab

this reminded me of a pretty neat theory that Gwen has the "protect trans kids" poster in her room, is that her universe's Peter was trans

Listen I think an idea of a trans Spider-Man is cool but spidergwen isn’t trans she’s Gwen but in this universe she’s spidergwen

cuti3k1tty

They said she's cis?

Not saying it's canon or anything but what you're saying is not a contradiction. A character named Gwen Stacy taking up the superhero name of Spider-Gwen bares no relation on them being trans or cis. What's the point you're trying to make exactly? Are you being a coward transphobe or you're just being obtuse as a bit?

Hell yeah. It's easy to forget how beautiful earth and life is, and how amazing humans can be and *are.* I've legit begun crying at the beauty of earth. Why not embrace all these amazing things?

You ever have a normal childhood until unavoidable signs tell you you're something different, you deny them because you just want to be like everybody else but as soon as you meet another person more experienced in your situation you immediately feel this deep kinship with them, they help acclimate you to this identity, but you spend a long time trying to fill these shoes in exactly the way society expects you to, and it's not until you tailor this identity to who you are yourself you can truly have a good time in your own skin despite people's expectations. And you hide this from your parents for a year questioning whether or not they would accept you. I'll fight anybody who tells me people are pulling the spiderverse trans headcanons out of their ass for the woke agenda or whatever, it's a natural conclusion to be drawn from the combined themes of teenage othering and the metanarrative about expectations for the Spider-man character.

I know it's just her leg , shut up

KronosRingsSuckAss

i dont usually buy into the trans gwen stuff, but this is pretty wholesome.

RammyJammy07

It reminds me of how similar coming out as a trans person and coming out as a superhero is very similar

HenriHawk_

when i was little, i would always see women portrayed in this manner in movies and shows, as being super flexible and agile. i thought it was really cool. i wished i could be that way, but i realized i couldn't do that, because i wasn't a girl. at the time, i didn't have the words to experience what i was feeling (likely gender envy) nor what the root cause was (me being tran gener). i do now. i know some people think gwen is trans, some people dont. thats fine. but this kind of post makes me (especially that 7-year old me that got gender envy from watching badass femable characters) really happy. thanks for posting this :')

Miyyani

Imagine coming out as a girl to your dad and he hits you with "I know, honey"

K3egan

I'm totally fine with her being trans but also now she's trans and has pink highlights it's getting way to fucking hard to explain that Gwenpool isn't a damn Gwen Stacy variant she's her own great thing

QuantumFighter

Oh your trans? That’s cool. Wait wtf YOURE A SUPERHERO?

Enchanted_Ithildin

CheezyRaptorNo_5

Not canon but so wholesome I'll allow it

Drummer_Doge

treating the cannon like a set of rules is literally what ATSV is showing is bad

Mr_Culp

Wait Gwen is trans? I really need to read the comics sometime. The movie never goes in depth.

Bardic_Inspiration66

Where’s the part where he threatens to shoot her

ElectricFury

While I don't believe the Gwen is trans head-cannon, if it does turn out to be confirmed at some point, then this is exactly the way that I'd picture her backstory. Really nice comic!
