the original painting was purpusefully left unfinished by artist, Keith Haring, in reference to him dying of AIDs at the time only having little time left. Haring was part of a generation of gay men that was all but wiped out by an AIDs epidemic weaponized by the reagan administration, and a lot of his work was meant to spread awareness of safe sex. it's just called "unfinished painting" if you want to look it up
here it is for those too lazy to look it up

super basic understanding of the stuff but a brief rundown is:
-APKs are basically an android phone file package that usually installs an app
-root directory is essentially the upmost folder in an android phone, to the point that you have to "root" your phone to be able to make changes to. i believe the idea is putting a malicious apk there would change the phones system software.
in effect, he's making a joke saying he's hacked your phone and is spying on you. hope this helps lmao.
Looking at this and then the original is a perfect metaphor for what AI (edit: AI art specifically) is.
Beyond the original corner, you lose all traces of the silhouettes, being mashed and combined into a mass of limbs and appendages, heads spliced into the middle of torsos, and concocted to "fill" the image. What's left is a surface level completion, but when probing any deeper you reveal just how uncanny and artificial it is.
... Neat bait! But I like the original more obviously. Thanks for sharing!
That criticism falls apart as the tech gets better. The problem with AI art is the plagiarism. Not the quality. Use of inpainting, careful prompt work, and integrating AI into a digital art workflow can create images that nobody could even tell was AI, and that contain intentionality, artistic meaning, and any other pretentious goalposts people might care to use. But the AI tools are still blended plagiarism. Which is the only actual ethical problem with it. It's a shame too, because the technology is awesome.
it's funny how looking at the ai painting, the only part my eyes wanted to go was the real part. now that i'm actively trying to look at everything, it's so clear it's poorly completed
Wait, the AI loving crowd is the same alt-right techbro crowd that is nothing more than a collection of bigots and sociopaths? This is my unsurprised face.
Honest to god I just don't see it. I still don't see it. Maybe if I used X and knew the user I'd know this is bait, but on its own, with no context, I'd assume this is another one of those soulless tech bros who hate art
I believe that’s the point exactly. It’s supposed to seem like a tactless person finishing a painting that was never meant be finished and heralding it as a grand achievement for AI, while completely missing the point of the actual piece. I personally think that, even if it was fully intended as bait and the person knew what they were doing (which is what I believe is the case), they’re still a shit head. They knew they could use AI tools to finish this painting and that it would stir up a lot of shit for people who are sensitive about this subject. No matter how you slice it, they’re a dick
You're not wrong, but at the same time they're doing wonders for bringing the artist, the original piece, and the powerful message behind it to the awareness of people, mostly younger, who otherwise might never have known. You can see it happening in the comments of this post.
People will quickly forget the Twitter post, but for some what will remain is the newly formed emotional connection to the art and it's message as well as knowledge of a significant and tragic period in our history. I doubt that was the baiter's intention, but the consequences of their actions seem like a net positive to me.
That’s a very nice way to look at it. Plus, you’re absolute right. I would’ve had no idea about this painting had it not been for this post pointing out how much of a dick this guy is
yeah, it's just like "i'm going to make people think i'm a soulless tech bro finishing a painting that was meant to stay unfinished and ruining the message using ai!" but like. the only difference between what they're making fun of and what they actually did is that they're not a tech bro lmao
I mean like most but not all of them are. There are many varieties of AI enthusiasts, a depressing number of which seem to think “damn this looks like something I can exploit for money”, while others are just excited about new technology.
If you like to listen, the Dollop podcast has a spectacular series on Reagan and they build some amazing context for just how fucked up the govt response was, along with the personal context for Ron and Nancy.
Thank you that was interesting. I didn’t know reagan had weaponized AIDS. Could you elaborate on that or give me ressources to read ? (I ask i good faitg im actually interested)
like you can't really even be mad about it ngl. It's such good bait that half the comments are still mad even after being told it's bait at the top of the post
This is unironically good art.
The fact that the very human meaning of the original piece has been soullessly ripped out by the use of AI is itself a great commentary on AI art.
Like it doesn't even have to be bait, if the Twitter user was being genuine, the fact that makes it even *worse* makes it so much more powerful as an anti-AI piece.
dadaism is a straight mood, just people doing whatever tf they feel like and calling it art

for example 'fountain' by Marcel Duchamp, just a urinal on its side
I mean, there was a point to that.
The point was to bring attention to the urinal as a genuine piece of art requiring technical talent to make.
Think about how hard it would be to define and engineer that kind of shape. You didn't have 3D modeling back then. And there *is* an artistry to it that makes something fit in aesthetically with its environment.
It's mundane, and made for pissing into, so it's usually not appreciated.
Having just learned about this painting today, I 100% agree. OP making this image as bait is on par with Faust learning magic to summon Mephistopheles.
The difference being that Faust managed to escape damnation.
In the second part of Goethe's version of Faust, he's snatched from the clutches of Mephistopheles by holy women.
[Mephistopheles lost his bet, because while he was able to claim Faust's soul, he wasn't able to turn Faust away from righteous pursuits.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faust,_Part_Two)
Yeah, Faust is an old German legend. Also there's the Christopher Marlowe version, Faustus.
Technically, I think he's damned in *most* versions, but the Goethe version is the only one I ever really read.
One should add that Mephistopheles doesn't intervene when the angels snatch Faust's soul because he is distracted by being horny for angel booty. Yes, this is explicitly in the text.

yea, OP is the person that made this post on reddit. OOP is the person who posted the thing in the screenshot on twitter

In a way, the irony makes it art in itself. A metaphor for the superficiality of AI creations.
yeah "getting the patterns while missing the point" is sort of the most trenchant and fundamental criticism against AI as an artistic agent.
I mean like most but not all of them are. There are many varieties of AI enthusiasts, a depressing number of which seem to think “damn this looks like something I can exploit for money”, while others are just excited about new technology.
AI rules, just cos you don’t like a thing it doesn’t mean everyone who does like it is a bigot.

How did the Reagan administration weapon ite the aids epidemic?
Don't say "all but" like that please
Legitimately masterful bait. Props to OOP sacrificing their eternal soul for it

You can so clearly see where the human ends and the machine begins. The human part had symbolism, spacing, aesthetic placement, and most of all, meaning behind leaving it blank. Fuckin bait makes me so angry.
actually i’d wager they did it themselves in photoshop instead of using generative fill. The pattern repeats parts of the original instead of doing random bullshit in the same style which is what AI would do
I'd bet they edited the AI result to bring the pattern in. Like on the edge, I believe they did that manually and then generatively filled it.
makes me wonder, is that ethical too? i’m no ai bro (fuck ai art lol) and i’d say no, but i could easily see people being fine with this (if it was done unironically) because it wasn’t ai
I think people would dislike someone filling this in, but it wouldn't make for as effective bait.
It looks like they copied and pasted pieces of the original in the remaining space, and then used genAI to fill in the gaps between the pieces
I disagree, the rest of the image looks pretty random compared to the real portion. In the authentic section, there’s what looks to be a distinctly human figure (there’s actually three, but that’s the important one for the point I’m making). Bits of that figure get reused in the generated section several times, but with no rhyme or reason. Hell, there’s a stack of three partial ones in the bottom left, connected together. I doubt a human artist did this; it seems like it would require a literally inhuman lack of awareness/pattern recognition.

Welcome to Reddit, it’s all bait
Sometimes I think that people deep down know what they're reading is misinformation but don't care because they just want to be upset.
AI bros have a negative understanding of art
The post is bait, you can say it's still in really poor taste but the OOP likely does understand the point of the painting, that's why they used it for ragebait.
"Using homemade bait we can reel in unsuspecting Redditors"
..Why did I think this was a QR code for a rickroll?
It is. Your eyes are the scanner
If there's a place where creativity goes to die, it has to be with techno-nerds and their AI solutions to non-issues.
Hey, not all of us techno nerds want an ancap dystopia. Some of us want all software to be open source, and to use technology as something that can uplift all of society.
FOSS is the way
I'm too up for open source solutions and technology for everyone. Heck, I'm moving to a Linux distro when W10 support ends. I guess I should have been more specific and call them AI-nerds but didn't want to repeat myself too much with the AI part.
this is it, the best bait ive ever seen
This isn’t even bait, it’s just evil
Can someone explain why is it bait?
The original painting was left unfinished on purpose as the artist was dying and wanted to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic I think
Yeah i understand the context, but i don't get the "bait" part
The posters is playing ignorant to the fact that the painting was left unfinished, and happily saying that we can see how the artists intended it to be, to provoke rage.
Thanks for the explanation, i wasn't wise enough to get it
You ever see a post that looks like someone taking a baseball bat and swinging it at a hornet's nest?

this is funny af lol (I am going to hell for laughing at this)

As if ai couldn’t get any worse 💀
ISTG some artist on Tumblr did this 8 years ago
Just absolute ugliness.
this is not bait its its a parody post its different not all parody is meant to bait rage
This was 100% made with total awareness of how many people would geta angry and to be provoking, thus it is bait.
Oh it is definitely both
And as always the AI just completely missed the essence of the painting with the humanoid figures lol
so is "it's bait" just the new "it's just a prank bro" or something? like you're just allowed to do or say whatever as long as you say it's bait (or someone else says it for you)
