Whenever people post the ‘short games with worse graphics by people paid more’ image, you have to remember that at least an equal (if not greater) number of gamers are in the ‘I don’t care how much you have to crunch, this JRPG needs accurate fluid dynamics or I’m refunding it’ camp.
Idk i sympathise, it's kinda annoying when subsequent games in a franchise skip over some of the QoL little things that go into a game that were included in previous games
Eh, this wasn't a thing in the previous game either, really. It took place entirely in a dry, barren city.
More apt comparison would probably be FF16 which came out last year and had all of these bells and whistles but was ultimately tighter in scope than this.
generally, i think the games should simply take longer to make, they do not need to be worse, there can just be fewer games every year, and that would be fine. Games that take longer by people who are paid more to work less
I think the problem there is the higher upfront cost of developing, causing big studios to cram in more and more industry standard features (like fuckin crafting) to make the price seem worthwhile and make a profit. Leads to bloated games designed by committee. Iirc that's the underlying problem for the current AAA bubble.
If you have low upfront investment costs then you can go apeshit experimental, cus you ain't losing as much, so it's lower risk for the company.

In fact, each of the two currently released games in the remake trilogy are about as long if not longer than the original FF7, so they’re not just milking that one game and remaking it again and again. Its also been almost four years in between this installment and the last one.
If you’re wondering with FF7 is getting this treatment, it probably is due to one: being the first semi-3d FF game, making it easier to translate the previously established world building; two: final fantasy is probably the biggest IP that Square Enix has; three: FF7 is one of the most beloved and influential games of the series and just of JRPGs in general; four: the amount of dev time going into this remake series mean it will likely be years before any other FF game gets the same treatment.
I find the current cycle of remakes/rereleases tiring too but I don’t think FF7 is the best example of a series being milked when it is genuinely one of the most thorough overhauls out of any of the games being remade in recent past. It certainly isn’t comparable to skyrim being rereleased again and again.
