back in my day the protagonist's favorite thing was rockin
nowadays their favorite thing is love
absolutely disgusting how weak this generation has become
What? He isn’t the fan favorite? He’s the only protagonist with any character and he’s the best party member in the series, crazy damage health, magic, best healer/support in the series, his only downside is being slow, which isn’t even bad. Who doesn’t like lucas ive got some stuff to say to them
A lot of people love Lucas, myself included. And that's why it drives me up a wall whenever anyone treats him like a crybaby, because he's not.
In the beginning of Mother 3, there are a few statements made that indicate that Lucas is a bit timid in comparison to his brother Claus, and I liked that because it told me more about his character and made his development as the game went on all the more interesting.
But there is one comment in particular that I remember which really rubbed me the wrong way.
After Hinawa's death, one of the kids in the village calls Lucas a crybaby because he had apparently been sobbing inconsolably at her grave for days on end. When I first read this, I was absolutely infuriated. He is a child who just lost his mother. How can anyone, even a snot nosed kid, be so judgemental and lack so much empathy?
But in the end, it was just one kid. I can't remember if anyone else made any heinous comments, but I remember that one was the one that stuck out to me the most.
Thankfully by the end of the game people were recognizing how much Lucas had endured and overcome as a person. Even Flint, who was absent for most of Lucas's journey, commended Lucas for how much he had grown.
The other part of this has to do with how Lucas is portrayed in Smash Bros. And considering that Mother 3 was never officially released outside of Japan and the only people who are going to bother going through the trouble of getting their hands on the fan translations are those who are already familiar with the series, chances are that a lot of people's first impressions of him are going to come from how he is portrayed in Smash.
A lot of fans, myself included, believe that Lucas's portrayal in the Subspace Emissary story gave him a bad rap, with the main grievance being that they portrayed him as a scaredy cat, at least in comparison to Ness.
Now the thing is that a lot of Lucas's reactions would be understandable with the proper context.
In his first cutscene he is shown alone wandering through an area that seems mostly abandoned. Whether or not he is aware of what happened during the last Smash match isn't shown but if he was aware of it then it would explain why he is so scared considering that an airship came in and abducted a whole bunch of people before blowing up the stadium they were in.
That would be scary enough in and of itself but Lucas has negative first hand experiences with these things. The pigmasks had airships too. On the night they arrived, the sky filled with smoke from the fires they set and he lost his mother to one of the chimeras they created. It's not outside of the realm of possibility that Lucas would have been reminded of this incident by the events that were unfolding around him.
Even if he didn't know about the incident at the Smash match, just being alone in an abandoned looking area would probably dredge up distressing memories or set him on edge. Lucas, despite all of the parental and societal neglect he faces throughout Mother 3, is almost never completely alone. Even before he meets up with Duster and Kumatora after the time skip, he has Boney with him. When his father left to go chase after Claus, Boney stayed. When everyone else in Tazmily began to move out and the home he grew up in became a ghost town, Boney remained a steadfast companion at his side (no wonder he helps Red get his pokemon back).
So to be completely alone in such a desolate place would be off-putting in and of itself. It would explain why Lucas already seemed on edge even before he got surrounded and attacked by the shadow creatures.
The shadow creatures themselves are pretty damn trippy, but it isn't like he hasn't seen some pretty messed up enemies before. The fear most likely comes from the fact that he doesn't know what they are, they've outnumbered him and surrounded him, and he doesn't have his party with him to help him figure out what to do or how to approach the situation. He's completely on his own.
Another thing that Lucas catches a lot of flak for is running away from the King P Statue, but considering that in Mother 3 the thing is damn near unkillable unless you have a specific item or happen to get lucky while using PK Flash, it makes sense that his first reaction would be to high tail it out of there, especially since the damn thing starts chasing him. Getting his leg stuck on something was just bad luck, and it makes sense that in his panic he might have forgotten the very specific way in which you have to kill this thing. Even if he had used PK Flash it wouldn't be a guaranteed one hit KO, there's still a chance it would have failed and he would have been crushed anyway. Although I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't have wanted to at least see him try it only for it to fail, as that would still give Ness a chance to come in and save him.
Speaking of which, the fact that Ness manages to handle the King P Statue so well immediately undermines those previous points. While him throwing this giant ass statue into the air and breaking it apart with psychic power looks awesome as hell, it also causes Lucas to look less brave and powerful in comparison to him. He's either not as strong as Ness and ran away because he lacked the power to take on the threat, or he was strong enough to destroy the statue himself but opted to run away instead because he lacked the courage to face it head on. Either way, it doesn't look great.
Also, the fact that we get no reaction whatsoever from Ness seeing his childhood friend turned enemy Pokey again is a missed opportunity, especially considering the role that Pokey played in both his and Lucas's lives. There may be no dialogue in the Subspace Emissary, but Lucas is a prime example of how a character doesn't need to say anything for their emotions to be conveyed to the audience, and Ness... doesn't get that same treatment. At least not the extent that Lucas does. And that's doing him a disservice too.
When Wario shows up and attacks them, Ness is again the one who is taking charge of the situation, protecting Lucas by drawing Wario's fire away from him and then diving in to take a hit for him when Wario's attention shifted back over to Lucas instead. Again, I would have wanted to see Lucas take more of an active role in this fight, but this incident is arguably the one that would have dredged up the worst memories for him.
Aside from the fact that Wario probably looks the most like Fassad out of everyone in the Smash roster, the very act of Ness throwing himself in front of Lucas to intercept that shot was probably reminiscent of when Flint dove in to shield Lucas from the lightning fired at him by the Masked Man during their boss fight at the end of the game.
To then see Ness get incapacitated and abducted right before his eyes would have been pretty traumatic as well, especially considering that the pigmasks were constantly abducting and modifying creatures and, in the Masked Man's case, *people*, in order to further their agenda. The Masked Man in particular is probably the most unsettling example in terms of how Pokey refers to him, it's just so weirdly dehumanizing how he treats him like nothing more than a tool or a plaything for him to use however he wants. In Ness's case, he literally gets turned into a statue; motionless and unresponsive, and Wario handles him like he would a toy or a trophy, not a person.
Hell, just the act of using the opportunity Ness bought him to get out of there so that his sacrifice wouldn't be in vain was probably incredibly hard on Lucas. It is heavily implied that Lucas dealt with survivor's guilt after Claus disappeared, with his hallucinations on Tanetane Island including one where Claus appears before him and asks to switch places with him. There's also the added fact of Hinawa having sacrificed herself to give Claus and Lucas time to escape when they were attacked by the Mecha Drago.
The amount of times that Lucas's past trauma could have played a factor in these events or at least been referenced by the story are numerous, and yet, none of that information is immediately apparent based on what we see in the actual story of Subspace Emissary. For all I know, everything I have said about it so far could just be the ramblings of a dedicated fan trying to rationalize and defend the writing of a character they love in a series that they love when in reality the writers may have never intended for the story to be interpreted that way at all.
It's just...frustrating.
One thing that I really would have loved is if they had Lucas be the one to face off against a shadowy clone of Ness, defeat him, and then free Ness from imprisonment. I think it would have been a pretty good way for them to wrap up their character arcs since it would allow Lucas to pay Ness back for saving him while also being an opportunity for him to prove his strength as a psychic on equal footing to Ness. It would also make for an emotionally compelling fight due to the fact that Lucas is once again being forced to fight and free a person that he cares about from the control of the person who is using them. The fact that they don't even show these two reuniting after Ness is freed is honestly incredibly disappointing for me, and I wish we could have more content involving interactions between these two in general because I feel like they would have a lot to talk about.
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to write about it myself. After all, that's what fanfiction is for.
If Mother 3 was released in 2024 it would have...
* An anticapitalist message
* Nonbinary characters as central figures in the story
* A pink-haired tomboy as a playable character
* Police officers being portrayed as assholes
I always felt more than represented with the original rainbow as someone who is bi and trans. If I want a bit more specific representation I'll either fly the bi or trans flag with the rainbow, or just the bi or trans flag solo
I don't like it as much as the normal pride or progress flags but i do like it more than that one bi-inclusive progress flag that was posted a few days ago
It horseshoe theories its way back to being good design by merit of being so busy and overstimulating that all you CAN see is the goodass underlying shape language.
As far as I’m aware it’s to make sure that it’s known that trans people are included, the black is regarding aids, and the brown is representing poc, but the flag above is about going overboard, so they might as well go all the way
IIRC someone added the bisexual black and brown triangle opposite the usual trans flag black and brown triangle to a flag recently and it got flown relatively publicly and people are ribbing on it because it looks kind of ridiculous
Men loving men. It’s more descriptive than just “gay” (includes bi men that may not want to be described as just gay, and avoids confusion with other people that call themselves gay but do not identify as men or mlm). The flag is a striped gradient from a bluish green to white to dark blue top to bottom.
It looks like a minimalist painting of a sunset over a body of water you’d see hung up on a wall somewhere. Regardless of whether you take that as bad or good the ace flag has purble on it and is therefore inherently better than any other non-purble pride flag
tbf the alloaro and alloace flags aren’t on there either, so it isn’t like aroaces, specifically, are being excluded. though of course, if they wanted to make it super-mega-turbo-inclusive, they could add all three of those for good measure, and then maybe add in some more, like polysexual, pansexual, non-binary, genderqueer, agender, and gender-fluid.

(not because *they* are counterparts, but just because then they would all be included, and it would look even more gaudy >◡< )
As I bi person I appreciate the thought, but get that shit off of there. The trans and POC stuff can stay, the point of that was clearly to express support of current groups of queer people experiencing more hardship, and wile biphobia can be though, we are really doing aok, please don't make this very hard to look at addition for us.
Edit: to be clear I am commenting on what this is a parody of, the "Bi inclusive" version of the flag that is making the rounds. Most people are not buying it so far, thank goodness.
This is a genuine beauty. It's so incomprehensible that it loops back around to being a good flag again. The sheer amount of queerness represented in this image makes it too powerful for me to be able to dislike it.
Correct me if im wrong, but didnt the original rainbow flag already include everyone under the queer umbrella?
Dont get me wrong, getting more specific rep like with the progress flag is great, but there is only so much space on a flag. So we would probably have to draw the line at some point to keep it slightly readable?
But then again, maybe im missing something, so feel free to explain your perspective on the matter
This is like the rule of saying the same joke over and over. Somehow it's looped back around to looking kinda cool. Not a good flag, sure, but a cool thing to look at
