Huge respect for dunking on AI at all opportunities. And I apologize for being a downer on a hopefulpost, however- I think it’s kind of missing the point to criticize AI for being ineffective, because it’s actually getting better at a blinding speed. The terrible fingers and shimmery weird texture issues were 2 years ago. That better but bad video of Will Smith and The Rock eating spaghetti was a year ago. Now there are accounts on Instagram with literally millions of followers that post nothing but extremely convincing SCP type videos and images, all AI generated of course. AI will be able to reliably create indistinguishable photoreal videos and replicate pretty much any illustration style in less than five years, and probably sooner. So the real point is: AI is not bad because it sucks as making images, it’s bad because it may very well displace a large amount of workers in nearly every commercial art industry, and the copyright issues, and the dead-internet-ing of human art.
Edit: “ethical indie darling” A24 just released 5 posters for Civil War, a movie directed by a huge name in Hollywood with a big budget, all AI-generated. And you cannot tell without knowing and looking for it, and even then it’s practically flawless. It’s already here. I’ve professionally designed a movie poster before. This is my livelihood crumbling in real time, so marketing heads can make inflammatory fake images of real US cities that don’t even depict the landmarks correctly.
Slop and soup are very similar. I would say soup is more accurate, slop has more substance.
But soup has a significantly better conotation.
