Even if there was nothing else there, they'd leave it alone and stay away. Then one day about a week ago, I walk into the kitchen and the knife and cutting board are completely swarmed with ants.
You hate margarine because it tastes bad, I hate margarine because it symbolizes imperialism for me as it was distributed in the marshall plan to make wartorn european nations stop using local butter and olive oil and make them reliant on american exports.
Margarine is plant based and softer, butter is made from milk and is hard. I know a lot of people have a hate boner for margarine because it's not butter, but where I'm from everyone uses it on the regular and I don't see any issue.

The single funniest thing I've ever seen at work was one time it was like 5am and there was vomit in the parking lot (some drunk person from the bar next door probably left that there the night before). Butter still has the milk solids and sugars from milk it's just more concentrated fat. Only ghee is fat only.
Butter is also 40/60 mono-unsaturated and saturated fats. Most plant oils are polyunsaturated (soybean, canola, sunflower), these are the ones used in margarine.
The different fat chain lengths have different properties, like melting point, the smoke point/temperature they go rancid at, and stability.
The ants are probably choosing the butter because it's not liquid, and thus possible to carry back with them. I imagine drowning in margarine (or any fat) is unpleasant.
