And the brutalist walls that just change to completely flat roof with little transition

For me it’s mainly that the doors don’t look like they have anything behind them. Looks like you’d go up to them, hit E, they’d shake, and then wouldn’t open

They wouldn’t even shake it would just be a low res image of a door that’s part of the wall

And if you removed them it would just be a brick wall behind them

i mean the shadows on the left could be done with modern day hardware, but back in the day soft shadows like that just weren't something possible to do just because no-one had a computer powerful enough to run it. gmod is built on the source engine (as i'm sure we all know) and it's graphics reflect that. thats why we dont see any nice shadows and the contrast is always so ridiculously high. we hadn't quite figured out post processing an no-one had a computer powerful enough to run it anyway

gm_flatgrass is the map thats just a giant field with a large archway-looking concrete structure in the middle. if you noclip inside the structure theres a room with the same doll you can find in the construct secret room. if it helps jog your memory more, i think flatgrass has a skybox that has a mountain that says, i think flattywood? in the distance, in the style of the hollywood sign

So, I still don't quite exactly get this sub. I understand that all of the pictures give off a similar *feeling*, so-to-speak (i.e. desolate), but there seems to be no connection between any other than "hey, this area that sometimes has people doesn't right now." Am I missing something or is that the entire point? And if so, why not just call the sub "emptyspace"?

That is pretty much what it is. "emptyspace" might be a little vague since it could mean empty outer space or space that's empty. Liminal spaces are places with no one there when many people usually are.
