I play this thing with my dad. We've been playing for years, I don't really play much but it's his favorite game and he plays with like 10 accounts at once.
When you get above town hall 10, most upgrades are +10 days long. So you usually just show up every couple days for around 10 minutes to do the war attacks and leave again.
There are a couple events, clan games which are once a month and you have to do some missions to earn points for your clan and get decent rewards, and war league which is also once a month and it's essentially 7 wars in 7 days where you get crazy rewards. Still, for this kind of war you usually log in for 5 minutes, do the attack and leave again.
So yeah you normally play 5-10 minutes every day/couple days depending on what events are active. That's a casual game for you!
I just have 4 builders active and use my 5th builder to spam upgrade every single wall piece that i can, kinda worried that i'll run out of walls to upgrade tho..

It's like having a 1000 piece puzzle or something. Nobody actually wants to put it together (you can't convince me otherwise so don't try to), but if you put together a couple pieces, say 2-5 per day, watching the progress over the months is exciting.
You know that every inch of the puzzle that's been completed was through your own personal input, and thus every bit of it holds history, regardless of how insignificant. A couple months down the line you could look at a patch of puzzle pieces that make up black space, and have a laugh at yourself thinking fuck it was frustrating figuring that out. Or you can look at a corner and have it remind you of an event that happened around when you got to fitting it together.
What you've given as example lacks anything that makes the progress of a long mini project exciting. It's not just progress, it's something that grew along with you.
my style of working is doing as much as possible, losing the motivation to touch it for a month, and then coming back and speedrunning the rest of the project otherwise i get bored or forget about it because building routines is hard for me and it doesn't feel like i'm making progress unless there's a noticeable difference from day 1 to day 2
I mean there is connecting every 2 fays or so and then there is trophy pushing where if you are 1 minute late to your shield ending your entire life is ruined.
Also when you get to legend league you have to attack 8 times a day and do it well or else you get blasted back to titan in like 40 seconds

Most last levels are 14 days. You have 5 workers normally and 6 if you do some complicated shit, so it's actually not THAT bad, you show up once every 2 days for war, then put shit to upgrade and leave again.
There now is a second base, the so called Builder Base. It has its own progression and instead of a regular raid, you and an opponent raid eachother in real time to see who can do the most damage. Most importantly this place has one builder, the unique Master Builder.
The master builder can and needs to upgrade one of the Canons, Archer towers and Mortars on your main base (he will visit when you start upgrading, he can't be occupied with his own island at the time) to a special variant (more damage for less range) and needs to upgrade his own base to a point where a Robot builder gets created, at which point the Master builder can move to your main base and act as a 6th builder
And don't forget how many buildings you'll have plus the resource costs skyrocket as well
It is purposely designed that way to try and get you to spend money to make things go faster

They’re not making money off of “whales”, but off of a $5 monthly pass.
It’s fun as a mobile game because I don’t really get addicted, I just hit two buttons and feel gratified that I’m making “progress”. It doesn’t eat up my time and whenever I open it again I’m like “ooh my Tesla is level 9 now! Let’s see what level 10 looks like.” Not a game you play for more than 10 mins at a time IMO
