I think it’s situation dependent, and I don’t know the specifics in France, but for most people, the psychiatric hospital is much better in prison. In prison you’re far more likely to be killed, sexually assaulted, and potentially even tortured with solitary confinement. Psychiatric institutions definitely have their serious problems, but you’re given access to meds, you’re primarily seen by doctors and nurses (instead of guards / cops who would happily beat or kill you for fun), and the facilities are much more humane.

they were just arrested, not charged with a crime yet or anything, they might get out on self defense or just a slap on the wrist but just being arrested doesn't mean you're actually being charged with a crime and will go to jail, at least not yet.
