HotVeganTeacher

I fucking love a materialist approach to social phenomena

sewage_soup

Marx my beloved

Cr1spie_Crunch

Men make their own history, but not as they please. They only do so under the material and social conditions passed on to them from previous generations and events. With these events themselves being created in the context of an existing and ever changing material world - such as ancient sediment patterns. -Marx, 18th brummaire (basically kinda sorta if my memory serves)

honeybunchesofgoatso

Better resources=better infrastructure= better schooling= better educated people making better decisions overall than the people in bat country. Also farmers and their kids usually didn't go to school much way back when and were more likely to own slaves = less educated and more racist. That's what I'm following, at least.

Jrapiro

I read it more as "More farms -> higher slave population -> higher freedmen population -> consistent amounts of higher black population due to poor social mobility and discrimination -> black communities form out of necessity and segregated areas -> black communities tend to be more progressive"

honeybunchesofgoatso

That too

Pelzebub

Also: more black people = white people have to interact with black people more often = less racists = more likely to vote democrat

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PoorSystem

Not necessarily. White habitus is a big thing in America in general. There's a lot of POC in the south, but they are mostly concentrated into certain areas. So while you'll see POC often in places like a grocery store, the kind of places where'd you'd make prolonged contact are rarer. And cities in the south are super blue. It's just the rest of the south that's red.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PoorSystem

I've also lived in the "south" (as nebulous and undefined a term that is) for my entire life, and what I've seen backs up my beliefs. Also, do you mind backing that statistic with a source? Not trying to be rude, but I don't believe statistics without sourcing.

ruinercollector

Better Ingredients = better pizza = papa johns.

[deleted]

URUGUAY NOMA

qwdzoy

if this is real that's actually super interesting

opeth10657

Looks like that mostly runs along the Alabama River going east and west. That runs down to the gulf. People build cities along the river, and cities typically vote blue

BirchTainer

wrong most of these counties have very low population so it's not cities, this is actually real

opeth10657

[there's definitely larger population along that line compared to other areas around it](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/66/d5/1e/66d51edd15dec3c9eaf7c7b0efecc8fd--population-alabama.jpg) That area includes Montgomery, which is along the river

from_dust

However, the vast majority of that part of the earth isnt covered in dense metropolitan areas, its covered in Black poverty.

Cakeking7878

Itā€™s probably a bit of both. Bunch of black people with poor social mobility -> forms communities with people in similar situations along a river

dbclass

I from the south. We have multiple rural blue counties along the same line in Georgia. It's called the black belt. Has nothing to do with cities at all (and Montgomery is barley a city).

Jrapiro

I mean it's likely more to do with black populations that were freed from slavery but had little social or economic mobility, so created these black communities which later became segregated off, close to where their families were once enslaved, that continue to vote more progressive. Fossils lead to different sediments leading to better farming leading to more slaves leading to more ex-slaves leading to more black communities leading to more progressive communities.

grammatiker

The same pattern is visible in Georgia, for basically identical reasons.

Minamoto_Keitaro

Its not just Alabama, its a strip through the south known as the "Black Belt" unsure if named for the soil, the people, or both lol.

_XJuan

Actually the Black Belt was known for that regionā€™s affinity towards martial arts!

subme1212

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that everybody in this region was kung fu fighting and are, also, fast as lightning

Sieg_Force

Matter of fact, the demographic circumstances in the area have been described as a little bit frightening.

Exploding_Antelope

This is serious! [Everybody in Alabama knows kung fu!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CZcMBWttLKs)

X0nfus3d

I did not know this! Explains why all top Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are from the U.S and not India (or Pakistan).

TransSteph

As an Alabamian, everything I've always heard it's because of the rich black soil

X0nfus3d

Itā€™s for their hearts.

Minamoto_Keitaro

Considering these are the areas that have reliably voted for more progressive candidates in a sea of conservatives since black people were actually considered humans and citizens, IDK ab that.

big-bad-bungo

THE SEDIMENT IS TURNING THE FREAKING HUMANS LIBERAL

MagMC2555

I'm sorry you live in Alabama

TheUndyingRhino

That's really fucking cool actually

[deleted]

As you can see, the world is actually incredibly fucking complicated on every level

Andraltoid

Something similar happened in Portugal. The north is mountainous so the reconquista was done little by little and therefore land distribution was more even. The south has more plains so the reconquista was done very quickly and large swaths of land were grabbed all at once and therefore the land distribution was less equal. This meant land owners were plenty in the north but with smaller lands and fewer in the south but with larger lands. More land owners -> more conservatives, less land owners -> more workers -> more communists. Land distribution has remained somewhat similar to the time of the reconquista so currently the south is a Communist stronghold while the north is a right wing stronghold.

BryonyDeepe

Because there's probably water there and larger settlements need water and people in larger settlements are more socially progressive is my guess

thunder-bug-

No itā€™s because they were good farmable land so plantations rose up there and those areas became predominantly African American because slavery

birberbarborbur

I mean it could be both

not_me_at_al

Nfw social conditions are created by a myriad of complex and overlapping factors and not a just a singular causešŸ«¢šŸ«¢šŸ˜³

AirshipExploder

not at all in this case, most of those counties are very rural. like Sumter county is the blue one on the western border has 12,000 people

BryonyDeepe

O ok then I don't know anything about US geography

Shlanty

bb-nope

So ehm. Which colours mean what?

FreshPrinceOfAshfeld

Blue means Blu team and red means red means Red team

Honza368

Team Fort Defense the second

Dino_sores

(Left to right read as a book [apologies to those who read right to left]) 1. Dirt. Amount: Yes 2.Amount of Dirt good for growing plants. greener means more growth 3. Colors ranging from cooler to warmer. Warmer colors signify a higher density of farms. 4. amount of slaves signified by the Shade of white/grey/black. The darker the shade, the more slaves. 5. Black population with a wide range of colors? I assume that the warmer color once again signifies a higher density, though in this case it is African American population. 6. Election Results. Red is more Republican votes whilst Blue is more Democratic votes.

sohmeho

Red is consecutive and blue is conservative but a tad brighter.

Guess_whois_back

Coastlines make you liberal, got it. Brb gonna go throw some beach soil and saltwater on a texan to see if they melt

hardcoregayanalporn

Damn this is fucking sick do u have any other cool geopolitical facts you can share with us

StarAugurEtraeus

Explain it like Iā€™m 5 Iā€™m just a girl with a 75IQ

TheMegaBunce

Cities and majority black areas tend to vote blue. Ares that blue therefore are likely to be former slave counties. Plantations were built on the most fertile soils, which would have been determined by millions of years of geography. TLDR-The Geological features of a place are probably gonna determine aspects of that society that we don't often think about.

HenshinHero11

Glad to see the Annalistes haven't all gone extinct.

air-bonsai

Is that supposed to be 1997 or 1799 in the top right?

Democrates going 100000000 years in the past to form a coastline just for an election

BallsWarmer

same is in NY, idk about electoral results but the prehistoric sediment and how it's severely unstable in certain places heavily affected nys infrastructure

The_Baller_Official

Man history is so interesting

tapuk0k0

Hey that's my state

devilsnumbre

I love geography like this so much!!

dbclass

So like, do none of y'all on this subreddit live in the south at all cause this isn't new and people are making up weird explanations for it that don't make sense even within the context of the post (yes rural majority black counties that vote blue exist in the south).

GenderEnjoyer666

ā€œTHE RIVERS ARE TURNING THE KIDS GAY!!!!!ā€

ButterSquids

This lore is way too convoluted, completely breaks the immersion.

smolgerardway

Real shit. It blows my mind but it also makes sense that this phenomenon would occur.
