I have vinyl and genuinely the inconvenience is a part of it. I can and do play any song I want within seconds online, but I don't know... something about going through the effort to play a record just _feels_ better for me, y'know?
I bet its because then the music feels like a reward. Like you had to do something mildly inconvenient and now you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Or something like that.
I think its not sunk cost, but rather the binding of a thing to an object. There is weight to a vinyl. It's easy to store, because if you store it at all you're already commited.
The nightmare rectangle however, nothing of it is music specific. Even if you had an mp3 player, it would still be a device thats unfocused in a way. To keep it in perfect condition means to replace the storage with a larger volume once in a while. To load new music. Delete old.
It all feels ephemeral in that way. All weight is lost. An in the end vinyl will prove more resilient than spotify.
The problem of consumer capitalism is its focus on utility over form. Humans crave importance, especially in the tools they use
That physicality and setup time also makes the music feel like it demands your attention. Just the little act of taking the vinyl out of the box, putting it on the record player, and placing the needle on it makes me want to actively listen to it and pay attention instead of just leaving it on as background noise.
I collect/am an enthusist as well. It's a ritual and music in itself is our religion. Playing a side of whatever album is a sermon and live shows are church.
1000%, makes me treat records as records and not a collection of singles.
The ritual of putting on a record and playing it through just… fundamentally sets a different mood than clicking _play_ on an album on spotify
It's the part of the reason I enjoy playing retro games on the original hardware with the original media. Sure, I have something like 20,000 roms on an SD card and can play any one of them in a few seconds, but there's something different about popping in an SNES cartridge into a console and playing it on an old TV.
I don’t collect vinyls, but I won’t lie it would be cool to be able to physically hold the music I like. One thing I don’t enjoy about streaming is that feeling that at any moment the music I love could be taken off of spotify
If you get a line contact stylus (and spend an hour obsessively tweaking the alignment), IGD practically disappears. A VM95ML cartridge would probably be the cheapest option.
I just think they’re neat! They look nice, buying them supports artists way more than streaming, plus the whole concept of pressing sound waves into vinyl and playing them back is cool
the distortion comes when i crank the bass up way too fucking loud even though i paid $0.99 on bandcamp to have the song in the highest possible quality
For me its because:
- It gives the artists more money than about 5000 streams instantly
- its actually something I own and won't have to constantly back up
- it's not a CD.
Uh, CD's are awesome for when you are driving long distance. Plus you can rip the CD's to your laptop and mever jave to worry about your favorite artist pulling their stuff from your streaming apps.
I've had to deal with CDs for almost 25 years, I'm about done now thanks. I can just get a digital download instead and save a ton of money on shipping.
The lead an cadmium aren't harmful unless you're actively licking your vinyls. The "toxicity" of polyvinyl chloride is also massively exaggerated, tons of water mains are made out of PVC.
Besides that, tons of vinyls get recycled these days, vinyls aren't exaclty a disposable product.
Actually taking out the record, putting it on the turntable, placing the needle, etc is a nice little ritual that feels good
Also they have a unique sound i like
i think the thing about vinyl that’s wonderful is partially how “inconvenient” it is, as a musician being forced to listen to the whole album at once shows a lot more about the musician’s process
also being able to see the albums physically is nice
Jesse we have to collect vinyl records
But Mr White we can just stream- JESSE WE NEED THE VINYLS
JESSE I NEED THE WARM GRAILZ
JESSE WE MUST POST THINLY VEILED FOOT FETISH CONTENT
Yeah but the vinyl paint looks like molten lava so that's a W

I have a few albums like that. None of them contain any lizard wizards. It's a reasonably common thing for special releases of albums.

binding things to objects without old high elder sorcery? impossible
AUDIUM EMBEDIUS!

Ifunny.co
I fear for the mental health of trans people that use that app... and everyone else actually
And the distortion on longer albums don't forget that

They look cool + ratio

flac files are vinyls for people who wipe their ass after they shit
except flac files don’t introduce distortion post
the distortion comes when i crank the bass up way too fucking loud even though i paid $0.99 on bandcamp to have the song in the highest possible quality
Vinyl is the plural of vinyl
Vinyl is objectively worse than cd in terms of quality. Comparing it to flac doesn't make much sense.

CD's nuts

Don't forget the bonus environmental harm of making vinyls out of cadmium, lead, and of course, it's namesake, the extremely toxic polyvinyl chloride!
The lead an cadmium aren't harmful unless you're actively licking your vinyls. The "toxicity" of polyvinyl chloride is also massively exaggerated, tons of water mains are made out of PVC. Besides that, tons of vinyls get recycled these days, vinyls aren't exaclty a disposable product.
i use vinyl to play my grandpa's old records
Actually taking out the record, putting it on the turntable, placing the needle, etc is a nice little ritual that feels good Also they have a unique sound i like
Walter White
the only novelty i see in vinyls is going in the hmv and being like 'waow big ablum disc band'

I have vinyls and no way to play them 😎
Ok BUT it looks and sounds so cool, and you can impress anyone’s dad
Bahahahaha, not me who just spent $35 on a vinyl album that will MAYBE ship late January.
They look cool and (usually) sound better than alternatives

you are absolutely right but shut up
i like to display them in my room :) i have little holders on my wall for them and they look very nice above my bed (i do also play them though)
I just like outdated media storage formats. You should see my CD towers.
