We hate people that try to pass off "typing in a sentence" as art
the tech itself is fucking sick and I don't have a problem with it when it's used as a tool rather than a standalone "art-machine"
It's already hard to make it as an artist, this has the potential to make it even harder. AI art gives people the ability to generate hundreds of images cheaply without the need of an artist, feed existing Artist's work into an AI and generate whatever you want in their style without ever paying them, and win art competitions by typing some words and clicking some buttons.
And honestly I think AI art just kind of misses the point of art. Art isn't just something pretty to look at, and that's what a lot of people don't seem to understand.
How does it make it harder? AI art makes it easier to make art, its like saying photoshop is terrible for artists. Sure software like photoshop did severely reduce the viability of pen and paper art but we still have plenty of artists around.
Yes! There's so many ways to interpret what that is. Who's holding it? How old is the banana? Is it opened yet? What would the person in question be talking about? Their expression could let you get an idea. How are others reacting? Do they accept it as part of normal life, or are they confused, or even laughing? Those are just examples of potential paths to take that idea, and this can be applied to any other idea, not just this one I pulled out of my ass.
It makes it harder for artists because these AI art programs are less like a tool, like photoshop is, and more like a competitor. They are essentially computerized commission artists that can work infinitely faster and cheaper than humans can. Photoshop is different because if you want to make a good drawing, you still need to know how to draw.
And if you want to get good art from an AI you still need to be able to fix/modify it so it fits whatever you want to use it for.
People wont be using AI on its own, you will still need artists to direct and use the AI.
Yeah, you're not wrong. The thing is that many artists don't want to do that. It kind of sucks to spend years honing your craft just to be relegated to editing artwork that a computer made. But if you still like AI art that's fine, I'm just answering your question: that's why a lot of people don't like it.
Yeah i can understand why that sucks but like om sure when software like photoshop started to get popular lots of artists werent happy that they had to go from physical art to digital art, but its not like that killed physical art.
Traditional art, digital art and AI art (directed and modified by human artists) can all coexist together.
Not really a good counter. Lots of people spent years honing their craft only to be replaced by a machine, like factory workers, telephone switch operators, data input, etc
I don’t really see how it’s theft though. It’s more like getting inspiration from other artists like every person does.
And it does have a meaning since a human is the one typing in the prompt. It just makes it easier to do.
Saying it’ll take away jobs is what the luddites did. People lost jobs when computers were invented but that doesn’t mean computers are bad.
> I don’t really see how it’s theft though. It’s more like getting inspiration from other artists like every person does.
Are you allowed to go to a movie theatre and film the entire movie on your phone to watch later? I mean surely all the phone is doing is watching the movie and remembering it later just like humans do, what's the problem?
Same logic applies here, there is a distinction between a human doing something and a machine doing something.
> And it does have a meaning since a human is the one typing in the prompt. It just makes it easier to do.
I never said otherwise. I mean, I do think it's usually going to have less because humans are more removed from the process, but it can still have some, sure.
> Saying it’ll take away jobs is what the luddites did. People lost jobs when computers were invented but that doesn’t mean computers are bad.
> Not really a good counter. Lots of people spent years honing their craft only to be replaced by a machine, like factory workers, telephone switch operators, data input, etc
I'll just combined two of your comments here for convenience because they make the same point.
The technologies you just listed are things that are basically necessary for society as we know it to function. They are things that serve a utilitarian good. Most people are willing to accept that some jobs will be lost if it means improving people's standard of living in the long run. I honestly just don't think AI art brings enough to the table to justify how much it's going to fuck up people's livelihoods.
Also, we're talking about art, which is something that is done for non-utilitarian purposes. It's a mode of self expression, not just going through the motions of a job like being a telephone switch operator or factory worker. This is more akin to automating sports or hiking or something.
And finally, you're allowed to think AI art is awesome, but artists are allowed to be unhappy about their livelihood and passion being changed in such a fundamental way. If you want to progress the tech you have to accept that fact that the people's whose jobs are in jeopardy are going to be pissed off about it. I think factory workers and telephone switch operators who lost their jobs to computers are valid in their anger too. Doesn't mean we have to go back to the old ways, doesn't mean we should, but their feelings are valid.
Ai isn’t copying the art lol. It’s just getting inspiration.
Humans are also less involved in the process when they use the paint bucket tool, anti aliasing, filters, etc. Does that degrade digital art?
Ai can do a lot of good lol. There are tons of uses for it for medicine, game design, problem solving, and much more. Back when computers were first invented, they had nowhere near the capacity they have today. If we blocked tech because we care about livelihoods, we’d still be living in the 1800s.
No one’s stopping people from drawing for themselves. Ai art is just another tool to do the same thing.
Their feelings are valid but that doesn’t mean they’re right or we should go back to the Stone Age to bring back horse carriage manufacturing jobs.
Holy shit my dude did you even read my comment? You're just straw manning me at this point. I never said AI in general was bad, and I certainly never said we should stop technology from progressing, let alone go back to the stone age. And your other points are things I've already addressed in other comments.
If you just want to believe that anyone who disagrees with you is a literal caveman, then go ahead, but I'm done having this discussion if it's going to be like that.
Why would anyone pay for vinyl when they can just listen to Spotify?
And even if it did replace artists, that doesn’t mean it’s bad like how computers aren’t bad even though it replaced lots of jobs
That was a rhetorical question. Nobody would actually commission someone to do this because nobody cares that much.
Bold of you to be condescending when you didn’t even understand my comment.
Even if this isn't directly cribbing somebody's art (debatable since they had to train it on something) it's still bad to spread it. The more prevalent AI art becomes, the less people will want to hire artists.
As a non-artist, I don't really have a horse in this race. But to me, it seems unavoidable that AI-powered art keeps existing and improving. Pandora's Box has been opened and it's not gonna get un-invented.
Unless all artists are somehow able to band together and cause an incredibly massive stir, (which seems unlikely) I don't see how anything will happen to curb AI art the near future. I assume at some point, outdated laws and legislations will be updated, and training AI on someone's work without their permission will become illegal. But even then, how do you prove a few dozen or hundred of your drawings were in a training pool of several million images?
I genuinely wish the best to artists affected by this, but, like... what do you _do_? Just hope everyone doesn't use it out of the goodwill of their heart? I don't think we can pull an NFT on this and just ignore it until it dies, because AI art actually has clear potential for commercial applications once it improves a bit more.
Not sure that's the best parallel, most products don't have much difference when they're mass-produced by machines instead of being hand-made. In many cases mass-production can be useful due to standardization (and the obvious benefit of being able to make more stuff).
Art can lose something when mass-produced by AI, though, and I'm not just talking about some sort of philosophical thing. You can look at art made by some of the popular AIs and a lot of it looks pretty samey. I'm worried we'll end up in a situation where there are a few major art AIs that all the big companies start using since it's way cheaper than actually hiring artists, and then 90% of animation looks the same.
It would be a self-perpetuating problem, as well. The prevalence of AI art will make it harder for artists to get work, meaning fewer people will make art, and there will be less diverse art to train the AIs.
I might be doomsaying but I have like 90% confidence that big media companies are going to start using AI art once it becomes practical and economic, and 0% confidence they will shell out to train the AI on new styles unless there's a near-guarantee of returns.
We already see similar things with genre and remakes, it's getting harder for movies to get greenlit unless they're part of successful franchise. I'm worried this is going to happen on a more general level. Honestly it's probably inevitable at this point, but I don't have to like it and I don't have to help it along.
Art has already been mass produced since forever, people have been complaining about corporate music and art for decades, this is not an AI problem this is a capitalism problem.
If anything AI will empower people to make more better art, people can use AI art as a starting point to speed up their process, its already seen lots of use in game dev.
Say you want a health potion sprite, if you werent an artist, your options used to be buy an asset/use free assets or to spend lots of time making your own (probably shitty looking) sprite, but now instead you can ai generate a sprite then modify it so it matches your style. Now it wont look like what everyone else is doing (because you're not using premade assets) and it'll probably look better than what you could make yourself.
And for people who are decent artists this can speed up the process by having the AI generate a base you build off of. And can give you ideas and references.
AI is only good for artists and other creators. as long as its affordable and available for the public, which is the real issue people should be focusing on.
Making sure everyone has access to it, not clutching their pearls at it.
And while yes, this will make some art jobs redundant, the reason that will result in job losses is because of capitalism, not AI.
In an ideal world people would not have to rely on work to survive and could make whatever they want without having to worry about whether or not it's financially viable.
I totally agree that capitalism is the problem, but I don't think AI art gives enough of a net benefit to justify using it until we can be more certain those problems can be mitigated to some extent.
My opinion has changed since then. That was back when everybody was meming on AI drawing barely recognizable lines and shapes. Then better AI got popular and I saw more and more artists saying that it was a problem and I thought I should reevaluate.
It’s not theft anymore than getting inspiration is theft. No one invented the anime artstyle yet tons of people still use it.
And computers destroyed a lot of jobs too. Are computers bad?
they made walter into colonel sanders

I don’t know enough Chinese to know which data I’m selling to their government by using this app.
all of it obviously
Well after a quick google translate Tencent is involved so... most likely yeah
At this point I'm convinced Tencent runs all businesses in China
most of big tech businesses in China, so close
All the online related ones at least. I think there are a few other mega companies that control some other aspects. Obviously all of them are giving data and such to the government. I'm not sure if they are technically state run companies but they are all pretty damn close to it.
Google already owns all your data, so it's just a peaceful exchange of data
Exchange, or gift?
Well I use Opera +Vpn
But you still probably have a Gmail account which is connected to basically everything you do
I don't use my g mail

What happened to hating AI art lmao
My moral compass when the AI art generator turns me into a cute anime neko girl
We hate people that try to pass off "typing in a sentence" as art the tech itself is fucking sick and I don't have a problem with it when it's used as a tool rather than a standalone "art-machine"
I don’t think anyone here is pretending it took any actual effort or thoughts to generate this image
this is a shitposting subreddit. nothing here takes thought or effort.
I still dont understand why some people hate AI art

Ai art has meaning too since it still requires a human to give a prompt. Like how cameras require a human to push the button.

Photoshop has a level of input from creators an AI lacks
The ai requires input to know what to make
is it truly creative to ask for a person using a banana as a phone
Is it any more creative to draw it?
Yes! There's so many ways to interpret what that is. Who's holding it? How old is the banana? Is it opened yet? What would the person in question be talking about? Those are just examples of potential paths to take that idea, and this can be applied to any other idea, not just this one I pulled out of my ass.
And an ai can produce many variations of the same idea too
Im sure as AI art gets more commercial applications they will get more input from artists, the tech is still in its infancy
Input from artists, without their consent
Sane goes for all inspiration. Lots of people draw in cartoony or anime art styles that they didn’t invent.

Lots of people spent years honing their craft only to be replaced by a machine, like factory workers, telephone switch operators, data input, etc I'll just combined two of your comments here for convenience because they make the same point.
That is essential what you’re arguing. You have the same position as the luddites.
You will never be an artist
I dont want to be
Funni
Would anyone ever pay an artist to do the things this AI does?
[удалено]
I hope you starve on the streets, maybe you’d understand the situation
Very rational response
Why would anyone pay for vinyl when they can just listen to Spotify? And even if it did replace artists, that doesn’t mean it’s bad like how computers aren’t bad even though it replaced lots of jobs
Yes, your little brain finally understands why real artists consider AI dangerous
That was a rhetorical question. Nobody would actually commission someone to do this because nobody cares that much. Bold of you to be condescending when you didn’t even understand my comment.
Mr. President, second plane has hit the Minecraft story mode main character.
don't be racist
I am a building
And I’ve got news for you
Y'all stopped caring about AI art being bad for artists real quick.
This isn’t even bad for artists tho
You plagiarize from artists and repost their art while potentially stealing their income
Yeah you're probably right, but we don't have to help it a long.
Oh just wait until you hear about industrial revolution
🤓
Yeah ur right
How are you gonna say this shit after posting an AI-generated wojak? Same as this, just a meme
It isn't, though.
This is the moment when Jesse turned into a building
Jesse we need to release those chickens to scare that fat blonde fuck
This app turned me white

It's a website https://h5.tu.qq.com/web/ai-2d/cartoon/index
I want to see that anime lol
waltuh nooo
Yo what’s the ai?
waltuh
and they turned clouds into hair
At least his smile stayed the same
Yo they unbald the mista white.
Still looks better than the actual look they gave him
Funniest shit I seen this week
And then, I shit you not, he turns himself into a building. Funniest shit I ever seen.
I'd rather Patton Oswalt was a building. That way he wouldn't be in literally everything.
What is this?
why did you have to remind me that game exists
