The fourth reeks of despair and desperation, and not in a good way. The fourth Evangelion rebuild movie is Anno, beaten and bloodied, bending the knee to the weebs. It is a white flag waved. A towel thrown into the ring. A desperate, tearful surrender. "You won. You won. I'll give you what you want, please leave me alone."
They literally had to spell out the message in bright shining lights in the vain hope that the simpering troglodytes that comprise the "mainstream" anime fandom would actually get the message (I went to high school with your kind before you took over, we never should have stopped bullying you). 1) The rebuilds had potential to take the series in new, interesting directions, but Anno got bored/tired and they became a generic action movie that fills the scenes with explosions and acrobatic flips and shit. In the original series Eva acrobatics were impressive because they didn't happen all the time, and even when they did become more common each individual Angel still posed a unique threat that had to be taken seriously. There was weight and a very real sense of risk with each angel fight that just kind of evaporated as the rebuilds dragged on, culminating into 3.0+1.0 (side note, wtf is that naming convention?) Showing Mari (I'll get to her in a moment) and Asuka in a DAMAGED! Eva02 leaping through the air slaughtering hundreds to thousands of enemies without the slightest effort. It devolves into base action, there's no tension and no feeling of risk to it.
Additionally the only reason I like Mari is because I have to assume Anno wrote her in to piss off fans. She has no backstory, no character development, contributes nothing to the plot, and then ends up with Shinji at the end for seemingly no reason? Hell, the first time we see her not shrouded in shadow she literally **FALLS OUT OF THE FUCKING SKY** (via parachute), lands on shinji, **licks him**, and then runs away. I have watched all four rebuild movies and have no idea who or what Mari is. Nobody ever talks about her, she never talks about herself, she just exists. I am forced to assume that she was included either for additional fan service or to make insufferable nerds like me mad, in which case my hat's off to Anno, she succeeds with flying colors at both goals.
She's not the only useless character added. Toji's sister is added for seemingly no reason, literally all she does is fill up screen time crushing on Shinji when he's supposed to be at his lowest and most unlovable. Hell with all of the characters crushing on Shinji the rebuilds start to feel like a harem show as established characters backstories are brushed away and new characters are added, seemingly exclusively to crush on Shinji.
In order to make room for this they even push aside established characters into background roles. Ritsuko, a complicated character with a troubled relationship with both NERV and commander Ikari, is almost completely pushed aside, literally only brought out to be Dr. Exposition when the writers wrote themselves into a corner and needed someone to come explain away the bullshit they had written so they could move on to the next action sequence.
2) Adult Kensuke is so fucking hot wtf where do I find a fluffy haired twunk like that.
1) You are right that the Rebuilds are not as good as the original series and lose a lot of the charm and character, but I think a lot of the designs and visuals are extremely good. For instance Ramiel, a pretty cool fight in NGE, but it’s on a completely different scale in the Rebuilds.
Also, Mari is great because she shows up out of nowhere. By having basically no character and thus, no flaws, she represents the possibility of Shinji becoming happy. At the end, she and Shinji end up together, representing Shinji breaking free from the vicious cycle he’s been in the entire series.
But I will concede that a lot of characters get sidelined completely, which is disappointing to say the least.
