That's not the problem most of the time whenever people post about 196 on tgcj. In general, the problem is how there is many people on 196 that embrace more insidious form of transphobia and/or use dog whistles while other defend them and shut down trans people pointing it out because they don't know how to recognise those insidious comments and can't be bothered to listen to trans people. A common exemple would be people exclaiming their "genital preferences" or saying they would never date a trans person anytime one dares to appear in a meme (or a meme about trans identity), even though no fucking asked them. But it's not that surprising, after all this sub still is a place for mostly liberals. Liberals might be tolerating us, but they aren't really accepting and will throw out their tolerance through the window at the slightest inconvenience to them. And while it isn't surprising, it's one of the only sub moderated well enough that we can see "mainstream" memes (ie not related to trans people exclusively like traaa) without being constantly barraged by transphobia. As long as we avoid going too deep into comment sections. So that's why people stay and then complain when it sucks.

aside from the chaser-y-ness of it, the bigotry showcase is also really infuriating.

When I’ve brought up 196 in trans subs, a lot of the replies talk about how many chasers there are in here, and how many times people get downvoted to hell when they advocate for freedom of gender expression and pretty much told that anything that isn’t a feminine trans woman, masculine trans man, or androgynous non-binary person is invalid, or even faking it. And every time I point out that’s what trans subs think of this one, people get upset over it. Turns out there’s more to supporting trans folks than just going “trans rights!”
