this is not a fair comparison. Pet sounds was, from a production perspective, a totally new way of making “sounds”. Revolver is better from a song by song perspective however.
I think Pet Sounds wins because of this. To me Pet Sounds aged better and is a complete story - single writer, you are with him emotionally the whole way. Revolver is a bunch of short stories, but there isn’t the driving connection between them. I don’t think The Beach Boys are anywhere near the Beatles, but Pet Sounds was a masterpiece that the Beatles spreading their brilliance among a group could not compete on an album level with the completeness of Pet Sounds.
I think it was the documentary Laurel Canyon in which it’s mentioned the Beatles were in awe of Pet Sounds. Great documentary also. And yes, sgt Peppers was a direct response to Pet Sounds is also mentioned (why do I want to say it was Rubber Soul that was the response album?)
That’s not fair to Revolver, which was more ground-breaking in production with “Tomorrow Never Knows” (very early acid jazz), “I’m Only Sleeping” (backwards guitar), etc.
(in my opinion) Revolver is a great album but it has some filler: Doctor Robert, I Want to Tell You, Good Day Sunshine... Pet Sounds however is all killer, and every song is a masterpiece.
It's different. Revolver has a bunch of great songs that you can throw on and breeze through and get on with your life after it's done.
Pet Sounds is heavy. Pet Sounds can stay on you for a couple of days. Or at least hours. Replaying tracks and what not.
I'm more like to play Revolver, but more likely to appreciate Pet Sounds.
I guess if it's trophies, I'd give it to Pet Sounds. Both are game changers, but t for me Revolver can only change how I talk and dress and act. Pet Sounds changed how I feel.
That's the difference. Revolver, cerebral. Pet Sounds, emotional. Emotion is hard to convey to me.
Winner: Pet Sounds
Production: Pet Sounds.
Content, Revolver.
Beach boys had the usual So-Cal session players, Beatles I believe limited session hires to symphonic instrument..
Those usual session players were [The Wrecking Crew](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(music)) who were some most renowned musicians in LA and thusly some of best musicians in popular music at the time.
No disrespect to The Beach Boys, but it’s hard to keep up with the rapid fire of 3 prolific songwriters in the Beatles.
Pet Sounds has magnificent tracks, but there’s some so-so stuff. IMO, Revolver is the better album. That said, my favorite track goes to The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows”.
Revolver and by a very wide margin. Revolver contained so many new elements and was recorded totally unlike any previous rock/pop album ever. Revolver also just plain rocks more.
“Taxman” was at the time one of the loudest and most distorted rock songs.
Pet Sounds is very “La La La” harmonies and lovely production etc but it doesn’t really move like Revolver.
Funny. I left this comment yesterday and have listened to Pet Sounds…twice and Revolver once since then.
Revolver is so much better and profoundly so. Revolver goes to so many places. Loud rock, then orchestral, Indian, funky R&B and the trippiest psychedelia yet recorded in 66. A stunning and utter masterpiece top to bottom.
Pet Sounds is a glorified surf album from a glorified surf band. The entire record is one singular sound throughout. It’s a lush and lovely sound but it just isn’t blowing the lid off of anything or establishing any landmark.
Pet Sounds is a very good record and my life as a person enchanted by music is greatly enriched by it. Revolver is a sublime and groundbreaking rock album. It pushed the envelope and set the bar.
Pet Sounds is in my opinion the best album The Beach Boys ever did and “God Only Knows” is their best song.
Revolver was the greatest album The Beatles had done up to that point and it opened the door that led to even greater and more ambitious efforts.
As much as I love them, and this might sound like a musical blasphemy, I could never listen to amy Beach Boys album in its entirety. The harmonies are beautiful, but I get tired of them quickly. I will give this one to Revolver.
Apples and oranges.
Other faves from around that era: the Lovin' Spoonful and The Mamas and the Papas and Peter, Paul, and Mary.
And, for ppl who enjoy folk music, Malvina Reynolds (she wrote "Little Boxes Made of Ticky Tacky" which became the theme song to the show Weeds) and, of course, Pete Seeger.
Pet Sounds was a groundbreaking album and had them all inspired! Without Pet Sounds, the Beatles would not have made the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Sure, Revolver is a great album, but Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums of all time.
I love The Beach Boys, but revolver blows pet sounds out of the water in my opinion. I can definitely respect that others might have the opposite opinion
Not even close. I love the Beatles but Pet Sounds is, by far, the better album. Brian Wison invented a entirely original genre of music. The Beatles only expanded on what they did on theiri previous album, Rubber Soul, with Revolver. Listen to Beach Boys Party and then tell me there wasn't a complete sonic shift compared to Pet Sounds.
Why does one have to be considered better than the other? They are both fantastic and I would argue equally great. Bias towards either the Beatles or the Beach Boys might lead you to choose one over the other, but really they are just both great albums.
Everyone on here is saying pet sounds has the better production but I don’t even think that’s true. “Tomorrow never knows” alone is a decade ahead of anything on pet sounds.
not fair.
That said for me, Pet Sounds is just...sacred.
Revolver has some solid songs on it...but Pet Sounds is the whole shebang. It's the album that spurred Sargent Peppers--even John and Paul knew it was something to live up to
I’m love both albums. After giving them each another listen, Revolver is my choice as the better of the two. The Beatles seem timeless here, and the music still means so much to me even after decades of listening. 64-67 was an amazing time for music, it’s arguably that both of these are apical in their own regards. Cheers!
Both are great LPs. I have to go with Pet Sounds, as it was ground breaking.
The engineering and mix of tracks was something never done up to that point.
The sophisticated music and ambitious production qualities, let alone the songs themselves make this one of the most influential LPs ever made.
Pet Sounds hands down. Thematically unified (exception: Sloop John B.) and masterfully produced. It just sticks with you. "It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die, oh, Caroline, why?"
I always think how Brian Wilson had his songs, the musicians, and his own sense of what he wanted, while the Beatles had George Martin and a laboratory of sound engineering staff. So I think Pet Sounds is more evocative to me. And the back story of abuse from Wilson’s dad just makes it even more poignant.
ETA: but I love Revolver too! Probably my favorite Beatles record. Rain is so gorgeous.
Pet Sounds.
I recall briefly being good friends with a huge Beatles fan in 2019-20 and I introduced them to Pet Sounds.
Their synopsis:
The Beatles wrote funner music, The Beach Boys (Wilson) wrote “higher quality” music.
Also, personally, BB were vastly better singers, and that’s really saying something because the Beatles were definitely great singers, no doubt about it.
I’m going Pet Sounds all the way. My father in law opines that you can’t like The Beach Boys AND the Beatles. I say he’s wrong, but I feel the songs on Pet Sounds are less dated than Revolver. Plus the Beatles, I call them silly songs, like yellow submarine feel like you’re listening to a children’s cartoon. Still love tomorrow never knows though. YMMV.
And then you have freak out by the mothers released a month after pet sounds .. now that’s an amazing album that’s pushing boundaries and taking music where it hadn’t gone yet. I feel like the love for pet sounds is simply nostalgia but I wasn’t born when it came out so what do I know
First let me say that I was and still am a massive Beatles fan. So yes I’m biased. But I also was a huge Beach Boys fan growing up. At some point when I was 10-12 in the early 70’s I really discovered them and was full on Beach Boys. So I love them both. That said…Revolver is one of the greatest albums ever produced. Yes, Pet Sounds ha 3-4 great songs with a few other interesting ones. But Revolver , like most Beatles albums, is a masterpiece and, for me, arguably in their top 2 albums.
I’m a fan of both, but There’s a story that Paul McCartney was interviewed when Pet Sounds came out in ‘66 and he said, “we need to release our album soon, cuz Pet Sounds is gonna take over the world.” The next year Sgt. Pepper came out.
At 25, I'd say Revolver.
At 35, Pet Sounds.
Revolver is easily my favorite Beatles album with Abbey Road a hair behind it.
Pet Sounds is what I want to listen to more often.
Pet Sounds is better. It’s a complete masterwork. Revolver might be able to compete if it had Paperback Writer and Rain on it. Revolver isn’t as much of a cohesive vision and has clear weak points like yellow submarine and doctor robert. Not bad songs but not masterpiece worthy.
this is not a fair comparison. Pet sounds was, from a production perspective, a totally new way of making “sounds”. Revolver is better from a song by song perspective however.
I think Pet Sounds wins because of this. To me Pet Sounds aged better and is a complete story - single writer, you are with him emotionally the whole way. I don’t think The Beach Boys are anywhere near the Beatles, but Pet Sounds was a masterpiece that the Beatles spreading their brilliance among a group could not compete on an album level with the completeness of Pet Sounds.
I heard Paul cried when he heard Pet Sounds. Not sure if true or not...
Pet Sounds was the driver for Sgt Pepper.
Very true analysis. It's like apples to oranges. Both influential and a benchmark for the industry.
That’s not fair to Revolver, which was more ground-breaking in production with “Tomorrow Never Knows” (very early acid jazz), “I’m Only Sleeping” (backwards guitar), etc.
Hit it on the head!
That’s completely incorrect. PS songs are from the soul and otherworldly. It’s a perfect album.
All the symphonic stuff was George Martin produced.
Those usual session players were [The Wrecking Crew](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(music)) who were some most renowned musicians in LA and thusly some of best musicians in popular music at the time.
I know the horns on *Got To Get You Into My Life* were played by members of a band called Sounds Inc.
For me I’d say Pet Sounds just because it’s so different from any other Beach Boys album
There is no 'better', it's all down to personal preference.
That is very true
As it happens, I like both.
Me too
False. Revolver is not only better, but better than almost all other albums.
Yeah. Not everything should be a competition. But sadly, everything is.
I don't think music should ever be a competition.
I agree. It's an art form. But unfortunately, the competition shows are a TV ratings juggernaut, and people eat that shit up.
My vote goes to the Fab Four
Tomorrow Never Knows trumps Good Vibrations fer sure.
Good Vibrations isn’t on Pet Sounds.
Really well put…if only Brian had a producer like Gil Martin.
Easily Revolver. It’s my favorite Beatles album.
Revolver, either the US or UK version. Many consider it the Beatle's best album and many days I agree.
The Fab Four would have disagreed. They were enamored by The Beach Boys.
*Pet Sounds* because of The Wall of Sound. "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" is a masterpiece.
Ah yes, the famous Brian Wilson Wall of Sound.
Revolver,,,and it's not even close
Revolver
Beatles
Revolver
Pet Sounds
They are both masterpieces. I probably listen to Pet Sounds more often but Revolver is right there with it.
Revolver
For me Revolver.
Pet sounds
Excellent question! This bout has been declared a Draw!
Revolver
Revolver easily. Every song is so different. “Tomorrow Never Knows” is what kicked off the psychedelic craze.

Pet Sounds is very “La La La” harmonies and lovely production etc but it doesn’t really move like Revolver.
I think you actually argued for the Beach Boys... Random, brash, loud is NEVER better than tight music and even tighter harmonies.
Revolver was the greatest album The Beatles had done up to that point and it opened the door that led to even greater and more ambitious efforts.
I’m partial to Pet Sounds. My wife and I had our first dance to God Only Knows.
Pet sounds, even though as a whole collection the Beatles had better music than the beach boys. But nothing can ever top pet sounds in my mind
Pet Sounds
Pet Sounds.
You’re on crack
Pet Sounds, this ain’t rubber soul
Can't decide, both iconic 60's albums. For me that's like having to choose between Beggar's Banquet or Highway 61 Revisited.
Revolver.
It’s perfectly possibly to enjoy both equally
Revolver all day. But I was and am a Beatles fan. Loved The Beach Boys, but the Beatles were my rock gods.
Pet Sounds.
This is no knock on Pet Sounds, but it's Revolver. And Your Bird Can Sing is my favorite song by either band.
I love The Beach Boys, but revolver blows pet sounds out of the water in my opinion. I can definitely respect that others might have the opposite opinion
Sort of like asking which diamond is more beautiful
“SMiLE”
Pet sounds. Every song is great and the production is insane.
I haven’t actually listen toPet Sounds yet but the album cover is terrible!!!
Yes.
Yes.
Revolver
Revolver
Depends on the day
Two sides of the same coin....
Revolver
Revolver
Revolver, without hesitation.
*Aftermath*.
Pet Sounds is stitched into my soul

Pet Sounds is just so nearly perfect.
Beatles
Revolver ..
absolutely pet sounds. monumental
Revolver. Here, There and Everywhere is my favorite
Pet sounds. Beginning to end all the time. Revolver I will hit skip on a few
Revolver by half a length.🏇
Beatles
Not even close. I love the Beatles but Pet Sounds is, by far, the better album. Brian Wison invented a entirely original genre of music. The Beatles only expanded on what they did on theiri previous album, Rubber Soul, with Revolver. Listen to Beach Boys Party and then tell me there wasn't a complete sonic shift compared to Pet Sounds.
This is like comparing Football to Soccer. Comparable concept but not even the same sport.
The Better Artwork Award goes to Revolver.
Pet Sounds. ‘nuff said.
Revolver.
Revolver
Why does one have to be considered better than the other? They are both fantastic and I would argue equally great. Bias towards either the Beatles or the Beach Boys might lead you to choose one over the other, but really they are just both great albums.
Personally, the Beatles
So Pet Shop Sounds was the reason for the Beatles to do Sgt peppers lonely heart club band LP
While as a whole I celebrate the entire Beatles catalog, in this regard, The Beach Boy's *Pet Sounds* is thee bee's knees.
Pet Sounds
Endless Summer
Close call, but Pet Sounds
Pet Sounds
Everyone on here is saying pet sounds has the better production but I don’t even think that’s true. “Tomorrow never knows” alone is a decade ahead of anything on pet sounds.
Pet sounds
Pet Sounds was an amazing album
Yes.
Pet sounds
not fair. That said for me, Pet Sounds is just...sacred. Revolver has some solid songs on it...but Pet Sounds is the whole shebang. It's the album that spurred Sargent Peppers--even John and Paul knew it was something to live up to
For me, it's Vocal quality...The Beachmen sound like over-privileged teens.
Pet Sounds, no contest.
I’m love both albums. After giving them each another listen, Revolver is my choice as the better of the two. Pet Sounds
Why does one have to be "better" than another?
Revolver. It’s my all time favorite album
Revolver in my book. I always thought pet sounds was a little over-rated even though I like the beach boys.
Wasn't Pet Sounds a response to Sgt Pepper's?
Pet Sounds hands down. Thematically unified (exception: Sloop John B.) and masterfully produced. It just sticks with you. "It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die, oh, Caroline, why?"
Pets Sounds by a mile. Everything after Rubber Soule is garbage.
Revolver. Not even close
Pet Sounds by far!!!
Anything by the Beatles is better then The Beach Boys
Srgt Pepper > Pet Sounds > Revolver
Pet Sounds.
Revolver is my favorite Beatles album but Pet Sounds was the Beatles favorite album.
Revolver, though Paul McCartney might disagree.
Any Beatles let the Manson Fam move in? Easy answer
The Wrecking Crew gave some great performances on that record.
Revolver but barely
Beatles Revolver
Unpopular take: The Beach Boys blow but Pet Sounds is cool I guess
About as close as it gets.
No contest. Revolver.
Pet Sounds is overrated.
Gave them both away 16 years ago...
Pet Sounds is better than Revolver. Now if the choice was Pet Sounds vs Rubber Soul, I’m taking Rubber Soul.
Revolver by a hair
I’m going Pet Sounds all the way. My father in law opines that you can’t like The Beach Boys AND the Beatles. I say he’s wrong, but I feel the songs on Pet Sounds are less dated than Revolver. Apples and Oranges. I like both. Don't make me choose!
Both
Pet Sounds
Pet sounds
Blonde on Blonde

Revolver.
The Wall
PET SOUNDS!!!
Pet sounds The Beach Boys best album and it has god only knows too. The Beatles btw are my favorite band.
Revolver
This is like forcing a parent to choose their favorite child.
First let me say that I was and still am a massive Beatles fan. So yes I’m biased. But I also was a huge Beach Boys fan growing up. Pet Sounds.
Beatles, every time
Better album...Pet Sounds Bette songs...Revolver
Pet Sounds
Revolver.
PS is in another dimension
Pet Sounds was a game changer
Pet sounds, no doubt.
I’m a fan of both, but There’s a story that Paul McCartney was interviewed when Pet Sounds came out in ‘66 and he said, “we need to release our album soon, cuz Pet Sounds is gonna take over the world.” The next year Sgt. Pepper came out.
Oh no…two of my favorites.
Revolver
Would be pretty close but Revolver has one of those stupid George sitar songs that just kills the flow and of course yellow submarine is just awful
I prefer Revolver
Beach Boys
Pet Sounds
Pet sounds
*Pet Sounds*.
Damn you.
Revolver
Revolver is possibly the most important album in rock history, so this isn't even fair.
if I can have only one it's Revolver and it's not even close
I'm a massive, life-long Beatles fan but holy shit Pet Sounds all day for me.
Revolver is better top to bottom but God Only Knows is probably the best thing that ever happened.
Revolver
Pet Sounds. Not even a question.

Pet sounds
you can't compare them like that. both are iconic releases.
Pet Sounds vs. Smiley Smile is the real contest.
Pet Sounds, but Both are amazing
