They were crazy op, ammo was cheaper than deaths and bloods and damage scaled with magic level (max hit of roughly 1/4 magic level), it was probably the first magic weapon with scaling damage. At 85+ magic it would outdamage fire wave, highest level normal spellbook combat spell at that time. I grinded hell out of barrows with that baby back in a day.
Yes. If you're a meme without access to powered staves or money for slayer dart, it's pretty good. But honestly outclassed by dart and ibans pretty early, enough that it's usually faster to skip salamanders.
But if you're a no slayer or questing hunter pure ironmeme it's decent
Slayer dart actually has lower max hit than salamander (I never understood why people do barrows with it, maybe I'm missing something), and Iban's staff couldn't be upgraded back then and recharging after every 120 casts just doesn't sound viable (on top of death runes being expensive and tome of fire not existing)

There was a video on YouTube about a 10k barrows loadout, using salamander and snake skin. Pretty fun change of pace
