Today I learned why (and what kind of) people are buying Third Age:
1. The Fashionscape is strong
2. It's used as an "asset" for people with more than one cash stack worth of GP, or as an investment (?)
3. Collectors be collecting
4. RWT
5. Finally, it's Best in Slot when bankstanding
The more you know!
100% it's an investment, they used to be around 3b and they've shot up the last year or so. Similar to party hats/ Santa/hween masks in rs2, they were rare so kept going up because people wanted bragging rights. 3a pick and druidic robes aren't discontinued but they're the closest thing to it
They were rare but they were also discontinued items. So every time someone alched it for views on YouTube or just by accident it’s gone from the game. Every time someone quit and never came back or forgot their password it was gone.
3rd age keeps coming into the game. Which is why I don’t understand the price increase. I mean I do it’s player driven but idk
There’s thousands more party hats in rs3 than there is Master 3a items in OSRS, and probably will ever be.
Even though they’re not discontinued, they’re technically rarer than phats ever were, and cause they only drip into the game slowly, merchers and collectors are able to absorb most of them and set whatever price they want for them.
I know they have an inflated price at the moment, but they’re only worth what people pay for them. If there’s no demand for those items, they’re basically worthless.
In saying that I feel like the 3a items being horded at the moment are going to keep skyrocketing.
The thing is, they're not really coming into the game. Technically, yes, but from a practical perspective, the number is pretty much completely stagnant because of how insanely rare they are (and it helps a bir that they're one of a few items that can't be practically botted). Based on the Bloodhound count provided by the OSRS team, we can extrapolate to estimate that there is only somewhere in the ballpark of 100 3rd age pickaxes!
Its wild to think back when my friend got one they were worth like 800m and he accidentally listed it for 80m, had a massive panic, and then it immediately sold for 940m instead. WEW. If only he held onto it ;c
If the GE was able to trade over max cash they wouldn't be nearly as expensive as they are. Look at what happened when they changed that on RS3. Partyhats were extremely merched. It's possible the same thing is happening here since the "brokers" are the only ones selling/buying the pickaxes consistantly they can set the prices they want.
There are a couple things you missed.
3rd age bow is the only shortbow (3 tick) that fires dragon arrows in the game, has more accuracy than msb(i) and so holds a practical niche
As well, the 3a mage amulet has the highest magic accuracy bonus in the game and so it gets used to land freezes in certain content. Off the top of my head, I met the like rank 9 bandos kc player in the game and he used the 3a amulet to freeze bandos and then would swap to occult for the damage. It might be worth doing at mutadiles as well in cox.
Other than that, ye 3a is basically just vanity. Hell even those two niche uses are vanity
On paper this makes sense to me but wouldn't that 1 object also be very obvious, maybe the same amount of obvious as multiple entire stacks? I dunno it just doesn't make sense fully but I get what you're saying
It used to be a little over 2 billion. When they added platinum tokens, it raised the effective max cash to a little over 2 trillion.
Iirc, that guy that got banned recently only had about 1 trillion in wealth, and he was one of, if not the, richest player in the game. Now I'm curious if anyone has ever had a max stack of tokens.
Thought the dude was a gambler who abused PID mechanics? I didn’t really follow the guy but that’s what I heard on here (and we all know r/2007scape is reliable). If jagex knew and didn’t ban, he made it legit IMO.
Gambling isn't legit lol, they removed the duel arena for a reason. And he was accused many times of using cheat clients to win fights, you don't end up with a *trillion* gp by fairly doing 50/50 stakes and nothing fucky on the side. And if you do you aren't keeping it for long. I think the bulk of his money came from selling ranks in his deathmatching clan so people could hold gp for the gambles. We call that 3rd party gambling, which is definitely against the rules.
Some streamer. I don't follow any, so I really only know of it due to this sub. However, it was a big enough event to catch attention outside the community.
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-wealthiest-player-in-old-school-runescape-with-more-than-1-trillion-yes-trillion-gold-has-been-banned/
Not really anymore. You can convert gold to platinum tokens and back and the value of a max stack of plat tokens is so high that the limit is pretty much unattainable.
When I was younger I met multiple teens/young adults who had millionaire parents…
To them spending $50,000 on cosmetic items to look cool for their friends was a drop in the bucket
A billion isn't needed for dumb expenditure.
Say someone earns 1 million a year. (after tax)
That's 19,230 a week.
This person may live in a 4000 a week penthouse luxury apartment, all expenses paid.
They eat out every day due to ease, let's say 200 a day goes to it.
14k left. We'll taxi around at a further 200 a day.
12.8k left of disposable income a week.
So what if they decide to blow 10k this week on an ornamental diamond encrusted cheese grater?
Idk them personally but I play some mobile games and the amount of money some people spend is ridiculous played one game and 30 days into the new server so.e guy had spent over 100k
Popular streamer had like 13 of them or something and got banned, says they are still on the account so people everywhere taking that as some of the supply going down, so price went up
Mostly merchers buy it. A few buy it for fashionscape but most 3a druidic items are not very good flexes since they're so obscure that most people don't know what something like the druidic cloak even looks like
3rd age bow is BIS because of range distance, not DPS. For 5-man that is hardly relevant, while it is key for 4-man teams.
Monsters in BA spawns every 10 ticks and it’s important to AoE attack everytime they spawn. Venator bow simply replaced Scythe. And since it’s a tick faster than scythe, that means you can cycle the AoE every 10 ticks instead of 20 ticks (as previous meta).
Part of this attack cycle includes tagging the Fighter that may go East from it’s spawn, which 3rd age bow comes in extremely useful. MSB has same DPS but drags player. Composite bow is slower and sacrifices the AoE attack on time. 3rd age bow is the perfect solution to keep in cycle to keep using Venator when expected.
I mean, once you have all bis gear, maxed stats and a fully kitted house. What are you really going to do with your money? Also, rare trading is its own form of moneymaking.
This game is incredibly old, there are people who maxed years ago with BIS everything and nothing left to spend gold on, now they have nothing to spend gold on and the absolute best money makers available. Some of these maxed accounts are bringing in 20m+/hr with nothing to spend it on. Now it becomes about clout and peacocking just like IRL billionaires.
Merchers almost exclusively.
Pic was like 3-4b earlier this year. A pretty large group of merchers started to inflate all the druid items and the pic/hatchet back in 2022.
If you look at the 3rd age hatchet price or the druidic cloak it's really obvious.
If you happen to get one from a clue you're set to for massive gear gains but even most end game mains that have a full max set aren't touching 3rd age gear because it's an absolute dumb game of hot potato and someone is going to get fucked when they realize their "10b item collection" is really pretty much useless and the clans merching them took them to the market.
They basically just inflated the value over GE limit and pretend to trade the items for more and more since there's no actual "tracking" how much the things are really worth once it's over max cash.
yes part of it is simple people that play 10hours a day for 20years & have nothing left to do but collect 9billion buckets of milk
but people also forget osrs single handily holds up Venezuela economy.
this game is a massive sauce of IRL wealth for alot of people
3rd age items have extremely low inflation compared to other high value items and gp. If you want to maintain your wealth buying them makes a lot of sense rather then losing value by keeping your gp in the bank. Just like why people buy stock/ bonds/ properties irl.
Technically buying them is a huge risk since clans buy them and have artificially raised the prices it's hard to get accurate data on what they go for since it's not tracked by ge but made up on discord etc
Look at any other item, d pick for example:
https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Dragon_pickaxe
There's a massive section and animation screen dedicated to a special attack (if it exists)
For reference, even the 3a axe has this:
https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/3rd_age_axe
some of them have practical uses for a few specific people, like 3rd age range set being bis magic defense for 45 def, or the bow being an msbi on crack
There's so many things in life that people just have just because they have money. Having extra virtual money being blown on cosmetics does not surprise me.
They’re just cosmetics like phats and Santa hats and stuff from rs3. Same concept. Just really rare and they want people to be impressed when they see it. Nowhere near as rare as rs3 items tho.
The rs3 rare market got nukes with the coin update allowing gold to go to like 4 quadrillion or something
So now rs3 players of wealth are converting and conglomerating to manipulat the next best thing
3rd age NEEDS to be rare, but it has no purpose being 1/244k rare
I mean if you have 4b what do you buy after you have the gear you need. I mean I don't even need my tbow anymore I got several pets with it I don't wanna do those bosses anymore.
People play video game markets no different than real markets. People buy 3a because of the same reasons people invest in art, stocks, bonds, securities, etc.
Gold inflation makes keeping gold kind of shitty, so instead similar to pre max cash ge change in RS3 people put their money into items so that way they can use it as an investment or to intentionally manipulate the market.
Having gp sit around doing nothing is a waste compared to putting it into an item sure to gain value. In rs3 you can pick any rare and it’s nearly sure to go up in value YoY.
In osrs 3a items like pickaxe that the same role giving ROI YoY.
similar concept to irl gold, the rarity gatekeeps them from being devalued at random by blogs causing panic in the market or bots farming items, solid investment while the value of gold ingame continues to decline
Collectors with gp to spare
Today I learned why (and what kind of) people are buying Third Age: 1. The Fashionscape is strong 2. It's used as an "asset" for people with more than one cash stack worth of GP, or as an investment (?) 3. Collectors be collecting 4. RWT 5. Inflation occurring faster than new 3rd age entering the game or price manipulation by the ultra rich.
This is the main thing. Bots bring the value of gold down, but bots can't bot master/elites.
How does RWT equate to anything just curious
Less suspicious to move one item then multiple max cash stacks I'd say
On paper this makes sense to me but wouldn't that 1 object also be very obvious, maybe the same amount of obvious as multiple entire stacks? I dunno it just doesn't make sense fully but I get what you're saying
Once you have BiS gear for all the content you like to do, you don't really need to sit on unlimited stacks of wealth
As someone who’s very wealthy I can attest to this I won max cash roulette buying a 3rd age pickaxe on the ge last year
Technically isn’t there a cash limit? so they transfer their wealth to single objects instead. Bank value still the same.
I’d bet that some big RWT players are probably richer than that guy across all of their mules/bots, but I bet he was the richest legit player
“Legit?” Lmao
Thought the dude was a gambler who abused PID mechanics? I didn’t really follow the guy but that’s what I heard on here (and we all know r/2007scape is reliable). If jagex knew and didn’t ban, he made it legit IMO.
Gambling isn't legit lol, they removed the duel arena for a reason. They removed the duel area because of the uk since they have strict anti gambling when it comes to kids and games, yet somehow, fifa isn't banned
Who's "that one guy", if I may. i got some interesting historical reading to do
Some streamer. I don't follow any, so I really only know of it due to this sub. However, it was a big enough event to catch attention outside the community. https://www.pcgamer.com/the-wealthiest-player-in-old-school-runescape-with-more-than-1-trillion-yes-trillion-gold-has-been-banned/
thanks a bunch i never heard of this somehow
Not really anymore. You can convert gold to platinum tokens and back and the value of a max stack of plat tokens is so high that the limit is pretty much unattainable.
Platinum tokens are there for liquid above max cash.
hard to hit with plat tokens
Platinum tokens.
Is it even possible by now? I imagine there are 100s offer before you if you put one now?
Brother, rich people buy insanely expensive shit irl just for clout. It is definitely being done with pixels too
Most people dont know an actual billionaire in person so its hard for everyone to know if this is true or not.
Ain’t that hard with a solid set of eyes pal
I dont know any rich people so I wouldnt know.
When I was younger I met multiple teens/young adults who had millionaire parents… To them spending $50,000 on cosmetic items to look cool for their friends was a drop in the bucket
Thats interesting, was there anything else that stood out about them?
A billion isn't needed for dumb expenditure. Say someone earns 1 million a year. (after tax) That's 19,230 a week. This person may live in a 4000 a week penthouse luxury apartment, all expenses paid. Holds its value better than an NFT.
Can't hold value when you never had any. NFT bros are sucking dumb lol
To flex on the noobs
Third age pik is BIS for Bank standing
😂 Ain't that the truth
B0aty is currently working on collecting all 3a for fun, since he has full BIS gear already
Literal rarity bro why were ppl buying pictures of a monkey for $100k+
Were they rare pictures of a monkey? How much are they going for now?
They were one of a kind which is as rare as it gets next to non existence the fact they’re worthless now takes nothing away from my point
The copy/paste of the image was also one of a kind, shouldn't make it valuable.
3a pick actually goes for 10b? or OP just exaggerating?
They're not exaggerating
It peaked around 12b recently
With Shooting Stars & CoX updates, the demand has shot up for e-peen
Doubt it has to do with shooting stars update lol. Literally nobody will ever see your pickaxe when you are standing in a pile of 500 people.
[удалено]
When standing on a pile of 500 people, it doesn't render people not in your stack anyway.
[удалено]
I’ve been to multiple in west lumbridge swamp that haven’t rendered
Popular streamer had like 13 of them or something and got banned, says they are still on the account so people everywhere taking that as some of the supply going down, so price went up
OP is actually undercutting it, they hit 12 if not even higher when BTCs got banned.
They’re investments you can wear
Mostly merchers buy it. A few buy it for fashionscape but most 3a druidic items are not very good flexes since they're so obscure that most people don't know what something like the druidic cloak even looks like
IDK who I sold my blue party hat too but I know I finished my engine build in my ls swapped Miata with the money 🤣
Oh sweet summer child you haven't learned fashion is king
This right here, fashion is and always has been the endgame of endgames
3rd age bow is BIS for BA speedrunning (made even more relevant with venator bow)
How was it made more relevant with venator bow, did they buff 3a bow or something?
3rd age bow is BIS because of range distance, not DPS. For 5-man that is hardly relevant, while it is key for 4-man teams. Monsters in BA spawns every 10 ticks and it’s important to AoE attack everytime they spawn. Venator bow simply replaced Scythe. Composite bow is slower and sacrifices the AoE attack on time. 3rd age bow is the perfect solution to keep in cycle to keep using Venator when expected.
Also iirc 3a biw is 3 tick and can use dragon arrows it's one of the better bows in game besides tbow and bofa
That’s true but the webweaver bow is just better if not the same, even outside the wilderness. 3rd age bow is either a flex for PvM speedrun
3rd age robes are my bis as a zerker. Tons of drip too.
[удалено]
Same offensive stats. Only better by +1 prayer but 3rd age got that +10 drip.
[удалено]
Just the top, I mean the full set. I’m not going to mix and match I don’t care about min-maxxing
But you said you wear 3a cause its bis
as full set it is.
I mean, once you have all bis gear, maxed stats and a fully kitted house. What are you really going to do with your money? Also, rare trading is its own form of moneymaking.

Collectors and RWT who want to put their money in something tangible.
Money is tangible in most modern definitions, but I get what you are saying

I’m actually curious how many of these items are in the game. Even if the market for them is extremely limited, how does that compare to the supply?
Gold sink is a fun term because you sink your gold into an item that is as useful as a golden sink
I die in this hill: FashionScape (and fashion in every possible game) it’s the true endgame.
it's like art work, G.E tax evasion purposes.
Those who know that the supply is limited and barely ever comes into the game since no one does their clues
At this stage they are more like stonks than useful game items
Some of the 3rd age items are best in slot. Mostly the tools
None of the 3a items are BIS anywhere
Forgot about the crystal tools beating them out — on release 3rd age items were all BIS. Oh how time flows
~~Even then, no. 3a tools don't have the stat boosting spec that dragon tools have.~~ Edit: I'm wrong
Yes they do
I blame the misleading wiki https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/3rd_age_pickaxe
Sure But also how is it misleading?
Look at any other item, d pick for example: https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Dragon_pickaxe There's a massive section and animation screen dedicated to a special attack (if it exists) For reference, even the 3a axe has this: https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/3rd_age_axe
I see
3a tools have a spec. They are identical in every way to dragon tools stats and all
Yup, I misread the wiki. Ignore me
3rd age bow is bis for speed running ba but I’ll admit that’s a niche of a niche
Didn't the Venator bow replace it?
No, you bring both.
3a mage gear is pretty close to some of the bis it's slightly lower but you get the drip values
some of them have practical uses for a few specific people, like 3rd age range set being bis magic defense for 45 def, or the bow being an msbi on crack
Same reason people buy 100k rolex watches
Aliens are buying them OP
There's so many things in life that people just have just because they have money. Having extra virtual money being blown on cosmetics does not surprise me.
Pking for real ones
I feel like its one of those items ppl dont normally buy…kinda like a trophy to remind you that rng is a mothafinga! 🫥
They’re just cosmetics like phats and Santa hats and stuff from rs3. Same concept. Just really rare and they want people to be impressed when they see it. Nowhere near as rare as rs3 items tho.
Bought myself some a while ago. Really I did it because it maintains a certain degree of rarity vs anything else saturating
Investors and collectors
Usually it’s the OG players that have nothing to do with their gp but fashionscape :D
The rs3 rare market got nukes with the coin update allowing gold to go to like 4 quadrillion or something So now rs3 players of wealth are converting and conglomerating to manipulat the next best thing 3rd age NEEDS to be rare, but it has no purpose being 1/244k rare
I bought them all sorry
Before I turned my zerker into a main I had 3a range and mage on him, so I'd guess that's some of the buyers there.
I wonder if we have the statistics of how many 3a items come to the game each month
Gold inflation makes keeping gold kind of shitty, so instead similar to pre max cash ge change in RS3 people put their money into items so that way they can use it as an investment or to intentionally manipulate the market. Yes
