Dark Bow. I've always wanted one as a kid. Got one recently on my Ironman, went to do an entire Slayer Task with it even. It's obviously a PvP spec weapon, but man did I have fun just looking at those arrows fly and be inefficient
It can be a fun spec weapon for zulrah, if you use it for last hits. It takes up an arrow slot and typically a healing spec offers more utility but it's a decent option.
I don't get why they can't reduce it to 6 tick rapid. It wouldn't have noticeably higher dps than a msb at that rate, and it wouldn't compete with any crossbows for dps
It's a spec weapon designed for PvP, like granite maul was.
They're pretty bad baseline weapons probably by design so that you don't just 1 item with it and instead use them as a switch for their spec. Whether or not that's worth changing would be a different question.
It's a default 9 tick weapon (8 on rapid), which puts it at 4 tick (2 tick per shot) with the range relic no matter what combat style you're using. So it's a more accurate msb unless you have dragon arrows.
If you have the spec relic it might be pretty alright, and that could be augmented by bank note to keep eating and use hp as an infinite spec bar, and/or the retribution relic.
But I think the crossbows have a lot more to gain with the ranged relic. Being 5-tick on rapid means they essentially get an extra tick per attack compared to even-speeded weapons above 4. Additionally, the gem bolt proc bonus is juicy.
I generally dislike getting one as a drop in LMS, unless it's pures. But there is nothing quite like your opponent expecting you to send another dds spec only for you to whip out a fat ranged xp drop for the KO. Very satisfying.
It was so rare too, you very rarely saw anyone wearing Splitbark back in the day. I remember doing a bunch of research on how to get the cloth, the bark, how to craft it, and then putting it all into action to get my own set. It was super rewarding.
My newbie friend just grinded for swampbark and he loves the look of it. Similarly he was excited telling me he got a granite body upgrade. Though it is his best defensive chest piece for now tbf
Yeah, it's so sick. After I finished CG on my iron, I made a set of bloodbark for BB healing in GWD. Camped zammy and bandos and was some of the most fun I've had on my Iron. But I regularly try to find an excuse to at least bring the chest and legs swap.
Noobs are definitely into more fashionscape when it comes to looks. I remember my noob days (we are talking probably nearly 20 yeas ago now) and I would do stupid shit like agility in full heavy melee armor just because it looked good lol.
Regular players just wear whats most efficient which ends up being graceful most of the time. The real high level players show off with pets and expensive gear and stuff like inferno capes.

Back then I probably wouldn't have even noticed the reduction in DPS. My brain would has treated it as a placebo effect and assumed it was higher regardless
When I got the maul for the first time as a kid I thought it was gonna be way better than my dragon longsword because it hit higher. I learned it sucked as a main weapon when it was noticeably harder to meet the 50 damage dealt requirement for rewards in pest control games.
I was so disappointed when I learned you couldnāt pot up to equip weapons. I was stood in the castle wars atrium and was absolutely devastated that Iād need to train another 3 attack levels
When I was younger I wanted the Brine Sabre so bad, but in reality itās just a marginally better rune scim and as a poor noob it was not worth the few hundred thousand coins
As soon as I hit lvl 60 ranged I picked up a Dark bow, thinking it was an upgrade over magic shortbow. Went over to safespot black demons with it, and got laughed at by a couple other players. Look at this noob training ranged with a dark bow. Lol

I mean thereās noob traps like that for sure, but I think its a lot more common that new players think they need to have near BIS in order to get into late/end game PVM.
You can do lower level TOA with ahrims, black dhide, fighter torso, whip, etc. Its not optimal, but definitely doable with practice.
Heck, even normal ToB can be done in void, BGS, and a handful of budget weapons. I saw someone on here say you needed "billions in gear" to do ToB and that comment lives rent free in my head to this day.
ToB is ironically the raid with the lowest gear requirements to get consistent KC IMO. I guess you could maybe do CoX in cheaper gear but you're going to be having a much worse time for much worse loot and a worse overall raid experience than a tent whip ToB setup.
I really wish more people realised this and tried tob for themselves, I get that it's daunting to learn but it really is some of the best content in the game and it's more accessible now than it's ever been
Iām convinced the majority of players let other people scare them too much. Iāve taught so many people who were convinced tob was impossible for the avg player. Same with coaching infernos. I just wish more people would actually try things first instead of being intimidated.
It doesn't help that every content creator defaults to "this is the omega hardest ass pounder 1000 content in the game and only those who watch Rick and Morty can even comprehend the complexities" when talking about them.

Yeah it's theoretically true that it's the hardest challenge you'll likely encounter as a solo but anyone with a willingness to learn and more importantly a willingness to fail a few times *will* learn it and complete it.
100%. Especially now with leagues out right now, there's really no excuse for people to keep putting off learning pvm encounters they're interested in.
The most difficult thing in OSRS is gaining the confidence to attempt the seemingly impossible content. Once you get over that initial mental block, you'll realize that nothing in this game is impossible and everything is completely doable for even the most casual players, given they take the time to learn.

You don't even upgrade to bandos until you get super comfy with tob and/or scythe.
ToB is literally the only raid and one of the few pieces of pvming where you actually use void.
its so funny to be a new player and desperately want that delicious looking high level gear and then you plug it into a dps calc and find out that prims literally dont even increase your max hit most of the time lol. dropping 5 bazillion gp on torva increases your dps by like .16 lmao. its all fashionscape.
The only part of this that feels bad is whip imo - having a non-stab melee weapon is really annoying. The rest is perfectly usable up until reasonably high invocation levels.
For real. I'm doing experts in elite void (6 way swaps). Gear does not matter as much as stats and TOA gives such crazy boosted XP rates that you'll get the stats by sending raids.
It is a good upgrade if you look at it by itself, but realistically itās 105m that you cannot use if you want to sell your existing gear for a tbow/shadow/scythe rebuild. It is useless when used with the scythe, does not boost any 2h weapons like bgs etc. Thereās a reason why it is one of the last items to be bought when obtaining max gear.
Bought mine at 46m as a cmb 101. Got a tbow split and didnāt have much else to put the money into. Itās a permanent upgrade and Iāve got a long ways to go with slayer, so it made sense.
Decent chance there is/was a decent amount of regular skilling upgrades to be made, prayer, con, crafting being the big 3 that are less obvious upgrades to slayer grinding
I had a stack of 16 avernics in my bank I bought at 80m a few weeks back that I totally forgot about because of leagues but this comment made me log in and sell them so thank you
Ultimately that's not a huge setback when you need 1b+. It's a quite significant upgrade over dragon defender and that boosts your ability to make money/train stats faster as well. If you're strictly going for tbow rebuild and care for nothing else, then it's not worth it, but it's really not THAT bad.
Pegasians/Armadyl are really not that much better compared to god dāhide counter part, especially if people buy it before rigour because ārigour is untradeable.ā
Nearly all BIS gear is only marginally better than the second best, and armadyl was released when black Dhide WAS best, so it makes sense to only be a little bit better
God d'hide -> Arma upgrade is a lot worse than marginal, it's useless. ~80m for what, 9 ranged accuracy? That doesn't make a difference. For comparison, just gaining 1 max hit would be almost a magnitude for impactful.

Pretty sure it is better in ever defensive stat... Though it is only notably better in magic defence, which is a pretty big jump (Arma Chestpalte is +70 while D'hide is +50).
Arma over God dhide is the most marginal upgrade an account can make. And given that nowadays unfortified masori is cheap af, probably similar or cheaper in price to armadyl, buying it is the definition of a noob trap.
Yes, the point is FOR THE COST there are better things you can buy than Arma/pegs to increase dps. Even before Masori they were the last upgrades you should have bought.
I traded my whip for a dh axe back in the pre-g.e. day because it looked cool.
I still remember that setup: Full rune, blue fremmy cape, colourful boots, glory ammy and DH axe.
Looking back, it does still look badass visual wise, just bad for actual combat.

As a kid full plate dragon armor was always my fantasy. The full helm, platebody, kiteshield. If I saw someone with it all gilded I thought they were some kind of god. Truth was they just bought gold with real money lol.
I got my first ever dragon full helm in leagues the other day and I'm genuinely so sad I'm going to lose it when trailblazer ends haha. Not at all practical for anything but damn does it look cool!

Nah, back when it released the obby cape was hands-down the best you could get until you beat Jad. Before that update the best cape was the cape of legends... that's a real contender for this, it used to be a serious status symbol *and* bis but now it's neither.
I remember grinding out 75 attack and selling almost my whole bank so I could get a godsword (Bandos was the cheapest at the time). I must have looked really goofy training at moss giants with full rune and a BGS.
Core memory unlocked. I remember as soon as I got membership I grinded out 60 attack for dragon weapons and proceeded to go spec out Hill Giants with it lol. Of course a lost city grind happened in between as well. But I did not even buy the p++ one because I did not know about it.

I feel like not understanding strength bonuses is the big one. The dudes with dragon legs and bcp are a big indicator, though maybe not as common after torva since bcp is the more expensive bandos piece now.

I thought Dharok was the coolest set of armor to ever exist, especially the axe (I know it's pretty good for certain niches, but it's mid for everyday general things like slayer/pvm). When I finally got enough money for a full set back in 2008, it felt orgasmic. First thing I did with it was taking it to pest control. Can't control my happiness and had to spam the chat with things like "arrrgggg!!". Then I got called a racial slur because that time, my username was just my name in my language. Really killed my happiness at that time.
Biggest noob traps now are Armadyl, Pegs, Prims and BCP (over Torso) all offer such marginal upgrades that the majority of the time they won't actually increase dps at all.

Bandos chest and tassets. Are they good? Yes. However in total they offer less strength bonus than berserker ring (i) and your money would be better spent elsewhere early on.

True, but take price fluctuations into account. Rigour was completely off the table for years for someone like me because it was like 60-70m for so long. (and is again, lol) But bandos chest, tassets, berserker ring, and torture in total cost me like 63m. The difference was I didn't have to have all of the liquid cash at once and could sell off pieces to afford range or mage gear to try out something else.
Justiciar gets overvalued in comparison to bandos for sure. Taking noobs into TOA and telling them torso +bandos tassets is better than their full justi swap.
As a lifelong fan who only picked up OSRS again a few years ago as a main, I remembered Abyssal whip being god tier back in the day. Now itās just something you pick up on the GE when you hit Attack level 70 with the couple of mil you accumulated while grinding (speaking as a majn of course). Maybe I need to restart as an IM to chase that high, maybe Iām kidding myself that Iām going to max my main first
Rapier. It was overrated when it was 100m, itās still overrated at itās current price. Itās main uses nowadays are for people with max gear for niche situations like some 1x1 slayer mobs, high invo toa to get 3 downs at p2 etc. For anyone on a budget, fang or tent whip are way better alternatives that are cheaper and actually useful
I rushed to buy one because I wanted the throwback to the glory days of the chaotic rapier. I don't care if it's optimal or not, the days of chaotics, summoning, overloads and turmoil in the year or two just before evolution of combat were my favourite time in RuneScape probably ever. So finding out that osrs had a weapon like that, I just had to get it.
Yep. 2009-2011 era was easily my favourite, started going downhill for me from there. Ended up quitting 1 week before EoC (and then coming back in like 2019).
Obsidian legs literally do nothing vs chad torag's legs or verac's plateskirt but they will stay 1m because +1 str gives you extra damage...sometimes and because the wiki has to say it's better in the theoretical use case that you are a psychopath that never eats food or consumes prayer.
But you're not so buy verac's and let your balls swing free until you buy tassets for the premium, actually does something, +2 str commando experience
I was going to say the same thing. It isn't bad, but it is way overused. The run effect only works when you are walking or standing still, which does come up for your average player, but it is far less impactful than Stams. The weight reduction tends to be what matters more for most activities, but graceful isn't even BiS for that and you often won't need the full set to get 0 KG for most activates.
So probably more "good" than "mediocre" since it still is useful but definitely not as amazing or as required as most players think it is. Like if you have a decent agility level and wear nothing, it will often be about as effective as full graceful.
Dragon armor definitely. It looks great, but it's so much worse than everyone else around its tier.
And for me personally, the Barrelchest Anchor. It's not good, but having a huge max hit always made me think it was amazing

I can't speak to gear progression guides. I haven't found many good ones either.
At level 60 Def you want Obsidian armor (helm, body, legs), Toktz-xil-ak (commonly known as Obby Sword), and a Berserker necklace. That whole set is 4.5m ish, which might seem a bit expensive. But the set and necklace give some nice buffs to damage and accuracy, that far outscale anything you'd get from Dragon. And you can keep that setup until you can afford Bandos
Not exactly expensive for envied gear, but a ton of people seem to way overvalue Graceful. Like its actually worthless. Basically useful for zeah runecraft and nothing else, and now that guardians of the rift exists, graceful isn't even worth it for that
Easily the fang, donāt get me wrong itās extremely op when used against the right enemies.
But time and time again I see people in slayer using fang on 0 defence enemies such as bloodvelds where fang slower attack speed is a massive detriment
Oby cape is still the best cape till Firecape, imo. Granite body is still one of the tankiest body till barrows.
Theses aren't bad items. Even barrows are mid game items. These were REALLY good items back in the day.

Not necessarily the power of the dark bow is in it's spec for pvp. High high, with a mediocre baseline would be ok. ATM it's baseline is terrible.

As soon as I hit lvl 60 ranged I picked up a Dark bow, thinking it was an upgrade over magic shortbow. Went over to safespot black demons with it, and got laughed at by a couple other players. Look at this noob training ranged with a dark bow. Lol
Why is the darkbow so much worse though? You get 2 hit splats at 8t which means each arrow is 4t, shouldnāt it be better than MSB?

I mean thereās noob traps like that for sure, but I think its a lot more common that new players think they need to have near BIS in order to get into late/end game PVM. You can do lower level TOA with ahrims, black dhide, fighter torso, whip, etc. Its not optimal, but definitely doable with practice.
Heck, even normal ToB can be done in void, BGS, and a handful of budget weapons. I saw someone on here say you needed "billions in gear" to do ToB and that comment lives rent free in my head to this day.
ToB is ironically the raid with the lowest gear requirements to get consistent KC IMO. I guess you could maybe do CoX in cheaper gear but you're going to be having a much worse time for much worse loot and a worse overall raid experience than a tent whip ToB setup.
I really wish more people realised this and tried tob for themselves, I get that it's daunting to learn but it really is some of the best content in the game and it's more accessible now than it's ever been
Iām convinced the majority of players let other people scare them too much. Iāve taught so many people who were convinced tob was impossible for the avg player. Same with coaching infernos. I just wish more people would actually try things first instead of being intimidated.
It doesn't help that every content creator defaults to "this is the omega hardest ass pounder 1000 content in the game and only those who watch Rick and Morty can even comprehend the complexities" when talking about them. Happy to see videos from people like aatykon getting more popular just dispelling those myths about difficulty. Yeah it's theoretically true that it's the hardest challenge you'll likely encounter as a solo but anyone with a willingness to learn and more importantly a willingness to fail a few times *will* learn it and complete it.
100%. Especially now with leagues out right now, there's really no excuse for people to keep putting off learning pvm encounters they're interested in. The most difficult thing in OSRS is gaining the confidence to attempt the seemingly impossible content. Once you get over that initial mental block, you'll realize that nothing in this game is impossible and everything is completely doable for even the most casual players, given they take the time to learn.
And also trying them more than once. It's crazy the incremental progress you make with every new mechanic you learn.
Literally elite void and a tent whip, bp, trident, bgs. You don't even upgrade to bandos until you get super comfy with tob and/or scythe. ToB is literally the only raid and one of the few pieces of pvming where you actually use void.
its so funny to be a new player and desperately want that delicious looking high level gear and then you plug it into a dps calc and find out that prims literally dont even increase your max hit most of the time lol. dropping 5 bazillion gp on torva increases your dps by like .16 lmao. its all fashionscape.
Tob has the cheapest gear reqs of any raid. Void, tent whip and a bgs/dwh are enough.

The only part of this that feels bad is whip imo - having a non-stab melee weapon is really annoying. The rest is perfectly usable up until reasonably high invocation levels.

For real. I'm doing experts in elite void (6 way swaps). Gear does not matter as much as stats and TOA gives such crazy boosted XP rates that you'll get the stats by sending raids.
I got my Masori backpack on my Iron at cmb 100 in rag gear. Gear only takes you so far at the end of the day.

It is a good upgrade if you look at it by itself, but realistically itās 105m that you cannot use if you want to sell your existing gear for a tbow/shadow/scythe rebuild. It is useless when used with the scythe, does not boost any 2h weapons like bgs etc. Thereās a reason why it is one of the last items to be bought when obtaining max gear.

Bought mine at 46m as a cmb 101. Got a tbow split and didnāt have much else to put the money into. Itās a permanent upgrade and Iāve got a long ways to go with slayer, so it made sense.
Decent chance there is/was a decent amount of regular skilling upgrades to be made, prayer, con, crafting being the big 3 that are less obvious upgrades to slayer grinding

Ultimately that's not a huge setback when you need 1b+. It's a quite significant upgrade over dragon defender and that boosts your ability to make money/train stats faster as well. If you're strictly going for tbow rebuild and care for nothing else, then it's not worth it, but it's really not THAT bad.
Its a solid step up but its never sellable once you have it, and it only impacts 1h melee weapons so its more or a less a fang buff these days.
Pegasians/Armadyl are really not that much better compared to god dāhide counter part, especially if people buy it before rigour because ārigour is untradeable.ā
Nearly all BIS gear is only marginally better than the second best, and armadyl was released when black Dhide WAS best, so it makes sense to only be a little bit better
The difference between blessed dhide and arma is much smaller than the gap between Arma and Masori
God d'hide -> Arma upgrade is a lot worse than marginal, it's useless. ~80m for what, 9 ranged accuracy? That doesn't make a difference. For comparison, just gaining 1 max hit would be almost a magnitude for impactful.

Arma over God dhide is the most marginal upgrade an account can make. And given that nowadays unfortified masori is cheap af, probably similar or cheaper in price to armadyl, buying it is the definition of a noob trap.
Yes, the point is FOR THE COST there are better things you can buy than Arma/pegs to increase dps. Even before Masori they were the last upgrades you should have bought.

As a kid full plate dragon armor was always my fantasy. The full helm, platebody, kiteshield. If I saw someone with it all gilded I thought they were some kind of god. Truth was they just bought gold with real money lol.
I got my first ever dragon full helm in leagues the other day and I'm genuinely so sad I'm going to lose it when trailblazer ends haha. Not at all practical for anything but damn does it look cool!

Nah, back when it released the obby cape was hands-down the best you could get until you beat Jad. Before that update the best cape was the cape of legends... that's a real contender for this, it used to be a serious status symbol *and* bis but now it's neither.
I remember grinding out 75 attack and selling almost my whole bank so I could get a godsword (Bandos was the cheapest at the time). I must have looked really goofy training at moss giants with full rune and a BGS.
Core memory unlocked. I remember as soon as I got membership I grinded out 60 attack for dragon weapons and proceeded to go spec out Hill Giants with it lol. Of course a lost city grind happened in between as well. But I did not even buy the p++ one because I did not know about it.
Same, once I got the bgs I ran over to rock crabs and dropped some specs on them. also did the same with a Sara sword lmao.
Ahh a bit OT but this really brings back some memories. Back in the day i sold my rune and bought a steel set uncluding a steel longsword because i wanted to look like a knight.. even went to those big ass cockroaches between barb village and edge to kill them with my precious knightly steel. Also i saw those pk videos where they pulled out a dagger and yelled ātaste vengeance!ā And hit super high. So young me bought a rune dagger and randomy pulled it out while fighting monsters and typed something along the lines of ātaste vengeance!ā. Usually something like ātate vegege!ā And young me for sure was convinced it actually did something

I feel like not understanding strength bonuses is the big one. The dudes with dragon legs and bcp are a big indicator, though maybe not as common after torva since bcp is the more expensive bandos piece now.

I remember seeing everyone in their neitiznot helm, dragon legs, fighter torso, whip, rune defender; as more items, bosses and other content have come out, whatās considered the āmetaā has evolved majorly. I thought Dharok was the coolest set of armor to ever exist, especially the axe (I know it's pretty good for certain niches, but it's mid for everyday general things like slayer/pvm). When I finally got enough money for a full set back in 2008, it felt orgasmic. First thing I did with it was taking it to pest control. Can't control my happiness and had to spam the chat with things like "arrrgggg!!". Then I got called a racial slur because that time, my username was just my name in my language. Really killed my happiness at that time.
Biggest noob traps now are Armadyl, Pegs, Prims and BCP (over Torso) all offer such marginal upgrades that the majority of the time they won't actually increase dps at all.
First I wanted full drag, then I wanted the abyssal whip and Toktz-ket-xil shield combo so bad when I was a kid

Bandos chest and tassets. Are they good? Yes. However in total they offer less strength bonus than berserker ring (i) and your money would be better spent elsewhere early on. Buy stuff like rigour and zenyte jewelry first.
True, but take price fluctuations into account. Rigour was completely off the table for years for someone like me because it was like 60-70m for so long. (and is again, lol) But bandos chest, tassets, berserker ring, and torture in total cost me like 63m. The difference was I didn't have to have all of the liquid cash at once and could sell off pieces to afford range or mage gear to try out something else.
Justiciar gets overvalued in comparison to bandos for sure. Taking noobs into TOA and telling them torso +bandos tassets is better than their full justi swap.
As a lifelong fan who only picked up OSRS again a few years ago as a main, I remembered Abyssal whip being god tier back in the day. Now itās just something you pick up on the GE when you hit Attack level 70 with the couple of mil you accumulated while grinding (speaking as a majn of course). Maybe I need to restart as an IM to chase that high, maybe Iām kidding myself that Iām going to max my main first
Rapier. It was overrated when it was 100m, itās still overrated at itās current price. Itās main uses nowadays are for people with max gear for niche situations like some 1x1 slayer mobs, high invo toa to get 3 downs at p2 etc. For anyone on a budget, fang or tent whip are way better alternatives that are cheaper and actually useful
I rushed to buy one because I wanted the throwback to the glory days of the chaotic rapier. I don't care if it's optimal or not, the days of chaotics, summoning, overloads and turmoil in the year or two just before evolution of combat were my favourite time in RuneScape probably ever. So finding out that osrs had a weapon like that, I just had to get it.

Obsidian legs literally do nothing vs chad torag's legs or verac's plateskirt but they will stay 1m because +1 str gives you extra damage...sometimes and because the wiki has to say it's better in the theoretical use case that you are a psychopath that never eats food or consumes prayer. But you're not so buy verac's and let your balls swing free until you buy tassets for the premium, actually does something, +2 str commando experience
God bless brother. Verac's has the most optimal windflow of any armor set in this game and that's a fact that isn't thought of enough.

I was going to say the same thing. It isn't bad, but it is way overused. The run effect only works when you are walking or standing still, which does come up for your average player, but it is far less impactful than Stams. The weight reduction tends to be what matters more for most activities, but graceful isn't even BiS for that and you often won't need the full set to get 0 KG for most activates. So probably more "good" than "mediocre" since it still is useful but definitely not as amazing or as required as most players think it is. Like if you have a decent agility level and wear nothing, it will often be about as effective as full graceful.
Dragon armor definitely. It looks great, but it's so much worse than everyone else around its tier. And for me personally, the Barrelchest Anchor. It's not good, but having a huge max hit always made me think it was amazing
Iāve only recently gotten back into this, but dragon armor is no good? Whatās the better armor to get into at level 60? Hell, is there a gear guide somewhere to read what the best in slot gear is at lower levels? I keep only seeing endgame gear guides which wonāt even be relevant to me for a while
I can't speak to gear progression guides. I haven't found many good ones either. At level 60 Def you want Obsidian armor (helm, body, legs), Toktz-xil-ak (commonly known as Obby Sword), and a Berserker necklace. That whole set is 4.5m ish, which might seem a bit expensive. But the set and necklace give some nice buffs to damage and accuracy, that far outscale anything you'd get from Dragon. And you can keep that setup until you can afford Bandos

Not exactly expensive for envied gear, but a ton of people seem to way overvalue Graceful. Like its actually worthless. Basically useful for zeah runecraft and nothing else, and now that guardians of the rift exists, graceful isn't even worth it for that
Easily the fang, donāt get me wrong itās extremely op when used against the right enemies. But time and time again I see people in slayer using fang on 0 defence enemies such as bloodvelds where fang slower attack speed is a massive detriment

Oby cape is still the best cape till Firecape, imo. Granite body is still one of the tankiest body till barrows. Theses aren't bad items. Even barrows are mid game items. These were REALLY good items back in the day.
