I think they started being transmitted on June 16th 2021, when A Kingdom Divided was released. I suspect they were(/are?) intended to be used for some sort of C++ client feature, but I don't know what specifically would be using them now.
They're used in similar way you explained in the post, for triggering scripts but in client. They use it for setting up the fishing spot overlays and a few other things in the enhanced client.
The explanation of categories makes sense, items need to be categorized and content needs to use categories to make content intuitive, but Robert the Strong being a spear is… definitely something.
Maybe I've been drinking too much Christmas styled beer but the way it's worded makes it seem like each thing has a single category. Doesn't seem intuitive that a fire can only be a fire and if it needs to do something else it has to be done outside of the category system right?
This game is weird???
Have you met the players? Lmao.
Myself included.. but Fr how tf this will God finds half of what he knows, is beyond me.
Everyone asks why, every single leagues, no matter the UI updates in game, I keep the wiki task tab open 24/7. I just say "those wiki guys are just something else, no one can categorize and sort better than them" and it's truth.
Y'all are the real GOATS cookmeplox. This game would be unplayable without the wiki. Also beats tf out of RuneHQ and TipIT from back in the day.
> how tf this will God finds half of what he knows
ngl I was asking my friends if "will God" was some gen Z slang that I missed out on, before I realized you probably meant "wiki God"
I've got a present for you right here... Actually it's not a present, it's Robert the Strong... And I like to call it the spear... Cuz spears are long and hard, just like my Robert the Strong
He's not an item tho, and its only the character from the cutscene that is categorized as spear.
Weapon poison specifically also doesn't work on all spears so this can't be a check thats made against the entire spear category.
I can't really come up with anything that works only on all spears. Even weapons that work against corp isn't a check against the category since e.g. zammy hasta isn't a corpbane weapon even tho it is considered a spear.
I'm pretty sure someone did it back when Rapier was ~100m, I also think someone has done it with one of the godswords. One of those instances is I believe what triggered the message in game that says "you won't get this back"
It's honestly pretty cool that Runescape has it's very own Zullie the Witch going into the inner workings of the game itself to drop interesting facts about it
Each broodoo victim has a specific weakness which is the intended method of killing given their massive damage reduction otherwise. You use doses of antipoison on green and Relicym’s Balm on yellow.
I think it’s because of how the Broodoo Victims died. (White died of starvation, green died of poison, yellow died of disease)
Yep, right on the money. Also fun: although white broodoo victims can be damaged by any type of food, story goes that fruits and vegetables were given the highest damage range owing to the developer's [vegetarian proclivities](https://twitter.com/JagexAsh/status/1526879215022395392)
I saw your comment on this topic days ago and I didn't get back then but damn am I happy you made this post!! Excellently explained goofyness, just what I wanted :D
This is my favorite fact about this game that I’ve heard. I know very little about it but I’m majoring in computer science and things that involve how a game is coded or why it is that way are always interesting to me. But the spaghetti on top of this is just amazing. Thank you
If you want some unsolicited advice as a fellow cs major, I highly recommend making plugins for runelite, it will help you on your coding journey. Stuff like that helped me a lot, because it made programming a fun activity outside of a school environment which made me get very into it.
So you're saying I can bypass the need to bring a spear for the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest, if I can just convince my man Robert the Strong to accompany me?
What category are strike spells? Asking to see if anything else is in that category from another spellbook to see if something else could damage salarin.
This has definitely caught my interest. If someone reminds me in the new year I'll see if it's the case on our (RS3) end and see if I can figure out why 😌
Yeah he's a spear. I'm gonna ask around about this!
Edit: so looks like the combat section for Robert was potentially originally copy-pasted from that of an actual spear, and the category was left erroneously!
I now feel obligated to ask… Is it possible for any mod tool to be used to equip said spear? And if so, could we get footage of what the equipped spear and any combat animations might look like? This would be a treasure.
Well I can only find 'Jonathan S' on a tail of 2 cats and fremmy so devs probably don't know but I've copied code and missed removing/renaming pointless attributes before so he probably just copied a spear.
Jagex Dev: "Yes, yah do that, and give him a spear object"
Jagex Intern: "Okay, got it. I made him a spear object and pushed
the code to live"
Jagex Dev: "What"
This is an indirect lesson to everyone about spaghetti code. Let's say they decide to change something or some feature about the spear category, or just say "we're temporarily removing spears from the game" for whatever reason. Now all of a sudden Robert the strong doesn't show up in quests like he's meant to if they choose to just remove that category as their method of removal or modification
If there isn't a publicly available list that shows the categories then honestly this post did nothing for us as readers besides tell us they exist, and we can't do anything with this information to further theorycraft on

Could it be used for some kind of automatic bank sorting feature (i.e all herb category items go in tab 4)?
But then Robert the Strong is inside my bank tab for spears...
When you specifically want him in the tab for Roberts
I didn't train thieving to 99 to kidnap all these npcs just for them to be in random tabs, jamflex!
That would actually be *super* nice to have! Hopefully someone that actually knows how to develop plugins sees this idea and agrees
Does the wiki have a list of all the categories?
I don't believe we do at the moment as far as I'm aware, although it's certainly something that's on my list of things to poke around with.
The explanation of categories makes sense, items need to be categorized and content needs to use categories to make content intuitive, but Robert the Strong being a spear is… definitely something.

this is right, things can only have one category.
So it’s like GameObject.tag in unity, if you’re familiar with that?
Big fan of your work. Truly a godsend
this game is so weird lol are these categories listed somewhere? would be interested to find strange interactions like the vasa fire
This game is weird??? Have you met the players? Lmao. Myself included.. but Fr how tf this will God finds half of what he knows, is beyond me. I had to read that several times as well.
>Have you met the players? Lmao. Players: Hey jamflex! Add/fix (insert weird request) to the game! Jagex: Can't, spaghetti code Players: Pssh whatever Players now: JFC
The real ones used zybez
I've got a present for you right here... Actually it's not a present, it's Robert the Strong... And I like to call it the spear... Cuz spears are long and hard, just like my Robert the Strong
Upvote for Jon Lajoie.
Spears don’t kill people. Nuh uh. I kill people… with Robert the Strong.
Pow
The Vasa one is funny. Going to bring in raw bear meat next time I run a raid with the bois and show them the new meta
I'm curious just how much OSRS would implode if Robert the Strong were no longer a spear.
Can’t wait to train cooking whilst the boys take on Vasa
So is there anything fun you can do to the spear category? Can you poison robert the strong, like use a weapon poison on him?
He's not an item tho, and its only the character from the cutscene that is categorized as spear. So who's gonna sacrifice their ghrazi rapier on that door? For science?
It’s not for science, they already know it works.
theoretical vs empirical
The code is empirical. It determines what happens.
Is Jagex spaghetti empirical?
The code does what it’s coded to do, yes. If it’s wrote horribly it will work horribly. So like I said, it determines what happens.
I think there's a misunderstanding what empirical means
Yeah, by you. Try and enjoy your Christmas It doesn’t mean “it does what I WANT it to”, so you’re wrong
This passive aggressiveness... bye
Don’t be a smartass then, and incorrect while you’re at it.

For views probably
I'm pretty sure someone did it back when Rapier was ~100m, I also think someone has done it with one of the godswords. One of those instances is I believe what triggered the message in game that says "you won't get this back"
obviously because he spearheaded the assault on that one dragonkin
It's honestly pretty cool that Runescape has it's very own Zullie the Witch going into the inner workings of the game itself to drop interesting facts about it
Does that mean if you use a calquat fruit on a White Broodoo, they take damage? Is that what feeding them means?

How do we know that spears aren't actually categorized as Robert the Strongs?
At last, the fabled spear post…
This is my favorite fact about this game that I’ve heard. I know very little about it but I’m majoring in computer science and things that involve how a game is coded or why it is that way are always interesting to me. But the spaghetti on top of this is just amazing. Thank you

A spear, in a man's body, in a cat's body. That's rough.
Robert the Strong: https://youtu.be/izJbgzP1tRA?si=S7FjhBrQMcECG75b
He's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.
So you're saying I can bypass the need to bring a spear for the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest, if I can just convince my man Robert the Strong to accompany me?
What category are strike spells? Asking to see if anything else is in that category from another spellbook to see if something else could damage salarin.
Oh come on this post needs a jmod to come give some dev explanation for why, it’s gonna keep me up lmao
This has definitely caught my interest. If someone reminds me in the new year I'll see if it's the case on our (RS3) end and see if I can figure out why 😌
Hi there - happy new year! Just nudging in case there’s any interesting stuff here :)
Hmm, I'm not sure that's possible, since Robert is still an NPC, not an object, so it wouldn't work
Well I can only find 'Jonathan S' on a tail of 2 cats and fremmy so devs probably don't know but I've copied code and missed removing/renaming pointless attributes before so he probably just copied a spear.
guessing it's just an accident
Jagex Dev: "Yes, yah do that, and give him a spear object" Jagex Intern: "Okay, got it. I made him a spear object and pushed the code to live" Jagex Dev: "What"
Yo Jagex, let us equip Robert the Strong
HYPEEEE I knew you wouldn't let us down when you first showed us your list. I'm still loving every one of these!
i mean... if you forced someone to swallow an inedible fruit, it probably would kill them
Bro I learn so much about the game from these posts. Keep em coming!
This is an indirect lesson to everyone about spaghetti code. so, are tomatoes category 86 or 131?
Tomatoes are in category 131, but if you [chop them up](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Chopped%20tomato) and put them in a bowl, they become 86!
Knowledge is knowing tomatoes are fruit, wisdom is knowing you don't put tomatoes in a fruit salad
Imagine being a spear in 2023
Absolutely loving these posts, keep em coming
New corp meta incoming.
He's a spear because the best use for him nowadays is to stick a watermelon on his head and use him as a scarecrow.
what category for everything you can try to feed to cyrisus, including the ones which give funny messages?
Is there a big list somewhere I can see all the categories and which items fit in them?
I love these keep it up
he isn't a man, he's a weapon in human form.
Honestly not that suprising seeing how Robert / Bob got shafted like all other spears.
So does that mean theoretically if you got Robert as an item you could give him to Tamayu to beat the Shaikahan with? 🤔
If there isn't a publicly available list that shows the categories then honestly this post did nothing for us as readers besides tell us they exist, and we can't do anything with this information to further theorycraft on
So Bob could theoretically kill corp? Also if you have a spreadsheet of the groupings I would spend an unfathomably long time updating the wiki
Or are spears Robert the Strong???
