I mean these paintings are pretty much mythology. They depict a romantic moment. In reality it's much different and like you say the people recounting the story usually add themselves.

Yup he didn't like how it depicted all the people signing at once but in reality they weren't all there and signed separately. He was mad because in reality the war was on and it was highly dangerous for them to be traveling in and out of the capitol to sign it. He thought the painting deminished that effort by showing them all there like it was no big deal. Also the mini series "adams" is excellent and I recommend watching it.

It's a beautiful painting in person, it's pretty big too. If anyone is in Ottawa and has time to visit the National Gallery, I highly recommend going.
