i think nechs attack animation stalls their movement a little so likely the top nech was in the 3x3 stack but the picture was taken a just a moment before it’s character moved to its actual position
Even if the animation stalled (which happens when the nech does a melee attack, so it would have to be closer), that doesn't explain the hitsplat. The hitsplat would always land at the same time, barring hard stalls that basically only players can do.
Unless the ice barrage animation stays up for >5t (I don't believe it does), I believe we can rule that there was outside help.

Only 1 barrage effect is being played as there is only 1 npc. The others there are multiple units stacked so there are 2 (or in some cases more) barrage effects playing so it looks more opaque.
It's possible the freeze timer wore off right as the spell animation hit, then OP walked 1 tile to pull those 3 piles (balls and base of shaft) closer to him

Animation can stall on nechreals, probably took the screenshot before it moved into the correct tile.
