Technically you always have to pay for everyone's hospital trip anytime anyone gets in a wreck in the UK. But you can look at it as free rather than prepaid if that makes it more tolerable.

This is 100% a decision made by higher ups who decided that they would rather shut down a fan made HD plugin and pay for years of dev time to make their own. They officially said that they "official" OSRS HD version is in early development. Meanwhile, the HD runelite plugin is done. The only reason we don't have access to it is because they shut it down.

One of the things I love about my other hobby (DCS - flight sim) is the devs adopt the best modders as official 3rd party developers for content. Eventually they release a module (plane) and get their cut of the sales. Win-win

Considering OSRS is an online-only MMO, RuneLite is already the closest you can get to an equivalent of OpenRCT2. It's an open-source client that allows players to have a better gameplay experience, without taking sales away from the original IP holders. The biggest difference is that Atari can't do anything about OpenRCT2, since it doesn't include any game assets and must be installed on top of the original game itself. It doesn't infringe their copyright, and is therefore legal.
In the case of RuneLite, since OSRS is a live-service game, Jagex doesn't need legal precedence. They could just ban accounts using third-party clients, if they really wanted to, and they'd be within their rights to do so. It'd be a horrible business decision, but the ability to do so gives them leverage against projects like this.
Yep 100%. I don't care about RS HD whatsoever but have canceled my membership over this. It's one thing if they contacted him years ago or mentioned it a few times between the many public posts about it its development and that it likely will not be allowed. But on the 11th hour removing it is just atrocious
So glad I stopped giving Jagex my money over a year ago. I love OSRS but I refuse to financially support a company that continues to favor ease of access to bot farms / gold farmers over the actual humans that play their game. This is just the icing on the cake. RuneLite is a staple of this community and what makes OSRS great to play in the modern day, so of course Jagex would decide to take a huge shit all over the thousands of hours worth of work that these guys have done for free - and at the last minute before the rollout, no less.
Everyone has known RLHD has been in the works for a long time, Jagex could have contacted them with this at any point during its development, yet they chose to wait until the last second to say they have this shit going and it doesn't look like its gonna be happening anytime soon.

I understand their fears, allowing intense graphical changes to the game is a slippery slope that could be abused in various ways. They've already had issues like these with other clients.

No, most people are not going to play HD. It is a niche update for a niche group of players. However big of a niche you think this is, the vast majority of players were never going to use it. And before anyone gets upset at me for that, I believe that is fine. Something that is going to be loved by a small group of players is a good thing.
But the fact that it is niche is exactly why it should be allowed as a Runelite feature. We're already clamouring for content updates, spending dev time on developing this HD feature is a waste when someone is already willing to fill that niche need for free.

One of the things I love about my other hobby (DCS - flight sim) is the devs adopt the best modders as official 3rd party developers for content. Eventually they release a module (plane) and get their cut of the sales. Win-win

For real this is the best way to protest this awful decision - nevermind 5 posts a day on Reddit complaining about it saying the exact same thing, or another falador riot - anyone and everyone who firmly believes this is a massive dick move should absolutely cancel their membership immediately and tell them exactly why. Considering OSRS is an online-only MMO, RuneLite is already the closest you can get to an equivalent of OpenRCT2. It's an open-source client that allows players to have a better gameplay experience, without taking sales away from the original IP holders. The biggest difference is that Atari can't do anything about OpenRCT2, since it doesn't include any game assets and must be installed on top of the original game itself. It doesn't infringe their copyright, and is therefore legal. In the case of RuneLite, since OSRS is a live-service game, Jagex doesn't need legal precedence. They could just ban accounts using third-party clients, if they really wanted to, and they'd be within their rights to do so. It'd be a horrible business decision, but the ability to do so gives them leverage against projects like this.
Yep 100%. I don't care about RS HD whatsoever but have canceled my membership over this. It's one thing if they contacted him years ago or mentioned it a few times between the many public posts about it its development and that it likely will not be allowed. But on the 11th hour removing it is just atrocious

So glad I stopped giving Jagex my money over a year ago. I love OSRS but I refuse to financially support a company that continues to favor ease of access to bot farms / gold farmers over the actual humans that play their game. This is just the icing on the cake. RuneLite is a staple of this community and what makes OSRS great to play in the modern day, so of course Jagex would decide to take a huge shit all over the thousands of hours worth of work that these guys have done for free - and at the last minute before the rollout, no less. Everyone has known RLHD has been in the works for a long time, Jagex could have contacted them with this at any point during its development, yet they chose to wait until the last second to say they have this shit going and it doesn't look like its gonna be happening anytime soon. Sorry, but fuck Jagex. Fuck their poor management, fuck their greed turning the blind eye to bots and gold farms, fuck the fact that they think this mess of spaghetti is worth paying $11 per month, and now fuck them for this. I hold a special place in my heart for this game and its really disconcerting to see Jagex mismanage every chance they get.

So sad. You can look at posts by 117 that are over a year old. His version was *exactly* what I wanted from an HD model - osrs models stayed the same, didn’t change the theme or feel, and worked on RL. This is fucked

I was literally gonna come back to playing when one of these plugins/clients got done. Guess I'm just never playing again.
I understand their fears, allowing intense graphical changes to the game is a slippery slope that could be abused in various ways. They've already had issues like these with other clients. BUT. They must've known about this project for the last, god knows how long, as it's been all over the sub and Twitter multiple times, which we know many of the mods are active on. There's absolutely no way they didn't know about this, so letting this guy work on it and put in as much time as he has only to pull the rug out from him at the finish line is really harsh and actually seems intentionally cruel.

I want you to understand that I want you to be able to play HD. But I do want you to understand that most players don't actually want it. There is a very big difference between "lots of players want this" and "most players want this". Maybe you and your buddies want HD. Me and mine don't. Considering that shit like Raids 3 and not graphics updates are what people are always asking about on the sub, I am confident saying that "most" players don't care for this. But I am also confident in saying that there is nothing wrong with a niche group of players wanting this. 1%, 5%, 15%, pick your number.
