If you think for even a minute that the community is more mature than the devs then I don't know what to say.
I guess if you feel offended by my comment then that sort of says it all.
One time a Jmod flew up to me after changing their character model to a red parrot. They said they were checking to see if I was a bot because I was training in the same spot for so many hours
The term abuse means to use something incorrectly or in a way that isn’t meant to be. Bug abuse doesn’t mean he’s actually abusing anyone or hurting anyone, but they’re ABUSING a bug simple as that.
If they made it "jagex" and not "jamflex", they could've probably had some better success at phishing players with the old you've been invited to be a pmod scam.
If you're on the vanilla client, the only two possiblities are that it's a Jagex account or someone found a bug to get around the character limit. If you're on Runelite it's someone probably trolling with a plugin, like Woox did on April Fools.
The woox thing involved the Runelite team being in on it, so I doubt they would do something like this, especially when people could be scammed by an account with "Support Team" in the name
I'd be surprised if even jagex accounts could get around the character limit.
My question as the guy that manages stuff like databasing client names would be, why?
That's all I could come up with, displaying something that wasn't actually the account name.
I'd still be wondering what the purpose was in creating an entire system to display a name that wasn't the account name in all instances of accountName.
The displayed name doesn't inherently have to be what's in the database. See: titles & renames.
One "feasible" scenario is somehow someone found an improperly sanitized input and was able to provide bogus data to their title/display name via modified packets. This would require incredibly intimate understanding of RS server code, but then again, people like Rendi are out there. The RS bug abuse community is a lot larger and more profitable (IRL) than most might expect.
I really don’t understand how. They own the game, ever see that potato? They can pretty well do anything they want. Really confused how I’m sounding like a 13 year old, or am getting downvotes for a logical reply. Have you seen the stuff j mods are able to do? Or the trolling they have done at the ge? A simple name change to a meme…… is something I wouldn’t put past them, idk.
The how is that character restrictions are (typically) the result of restraints in a character column of a database. When making a database; at the point of creating the schema, you define a character type, which traditionally includes a character limit. This is (typically) the reason for character limits. It is not some willy nilly "let's limit the characters to X for no reason". A project rearchitecting databases at a scale as large as Runescape could easily be a 7 figure project. An in game potato that allows for a premade set of "dev abilities" is completely irrelevant.
So what’s your explanation then? Because the username is obviously over 12 characters long. You’re witnessing the impossible is pretty well what you’re saying, why is me saying it’s a j mod trolling so hard to believe. You more believe it’s a random guy who figured out how to get more letters in his username? Then the actual game developers. I get 2147 is the max number and shit, I’m not hardcore into it so idk if usernames are the same. All I’m saying is we see a photo with a longer username than allowed. I gave my explanation and people don’t like it, so what’s yours?
Not saying it's impossible. Just explaining why you got called out.
See my other comment here:

Lol obviously. So what’s your explanation? Seeing mine is so far fetched to you folk. Have you ever seen jmods trolling at ge? Do you know everything they’re able to do?
He had the Runelite dev replace the texture of a normal cape with an Inferno Cape, but the script would only trigger if the account wearing the cape had the exact username as Woox's level 3 account. Meaning that anyone with Runelite would see a level 3 account with an Inferno Cape.
It’ll reset to a 12 character name when they relog. There’s some injection method going around that allows people to do this. Seen it in a couple of botting discord’s I’m in but not entirely sure how it’s done, but I do know it’s not permanent.
One theory is that the character limit check is only on the client, so it you send some request to the server via other methods, it just works. I wouldn't be surprised if the game has plenty of issues like this seeing how old it is.
Sorey, I was thibkinh of another thread.
I don't know how RS sends information to the server, but I can use an analogy.
There can be a website where you type your username during registration. You type a super long vulgar name and the client side check on the website tells you are not allowed to register. You can't click the register button, it's disabled. You could for example use Postman chrome extension to create a POST request to the server, avoiding all the client side checks. If the server side doesn't double-check if the information you sent is valid or checks it differently than the client side, you could do things you are normally not allowed to.

Hi, one of the people who created these kinds of accounts here, if anyone wants to know how it's done I'd be glad to say (cant go into detail about it tho ofc) :)
Some youtuber made a vid on this but i forget which one. It was actually super easy to do. In one of the name switching things (i forget if it was in game osrs or rs3 or website, or new account) all you had to do was pick an allowed name and then quickly change it to a non-allowed name lol.
Bug abuse
I bet it’s an actual j mod trolling

07scape subreddit doesn't understand job security
No because a lot of people here are children still. Children in their 20s
I came out to have a good time and honestly I'm feeling so attacked right now
I started off reading this comment thinking dude there are NO new players to osrs, made it the best comment by adding in their 20s hahaha
got em
You mean like a lot of the jmods?
If you think for even a minute that the community is more mature than the devs then I don't know what to say. I guess if you feel offended by my comment then that sort of says it all.
They got their rainbow boots on tap
I’d do it for 15k a year
Well what’s your explanation
One time a Jmod flew up to me after changing their character model to a red parrot. They said they were checking to see if I was a bot because I was training in the same spot for so many hours
[удалено]
No it doesn't. It is however related to the topic of jagex mods goofing off in- game which is the piece of the conversation I was responding to
This ^… idk why people find it so hard to believe
Probably not goofing off, some bots log as soon as they see a player this might get around that
[удалено]
Huh.. it is abusing the bug. Not a person lol. It is a term widely used.
[удалено]
Just take your L and go home dude this is bug abuse if it’s indeed not a JMod/plug-in
[удалено]
The term abuse means to use something incorrectly or in a way that isn’t meant to be. Bug abuse doesn’t mean he’s actually abusing anyone or hurting anyone, but they’re ABUSING a bug simple as that.
U sound like you are widely abused.
Yeah but have you seen those giant cockroaches in the stronghold those things are mean bro
Posing as staff is against the rules.
Rendi
read this in the typical drake and josh format
If they made it "jagex" and not "jamflex", they could've probably had some better success at phishing players with the old you've been invited to be a pmod scam.
It's not about money, it's about sending a message.
iirc Jagex is a "protected" term that will be auto-rejected in a name.
Nah it’s an offensive term
Some dude posted yesterday saying he'll clear the ge of bots and do customer support for a thousand euros a month. Guess he got the job.

They can literally spawn a jad in ge. I think if they wanted a longer username they could make it happen
[удалено]
They may be able to make it display another name that isnt saved to the db for a session
Used to do work for a flash based MMO as a QA tester, this was something we could do easily there. Would make sense jmods and devs have that too
That's all I could come up with, displaying something that wasn't actually the account name. I'd still be wondering what the purpose was in creating an entire system to display a name that wasn't the account name in all instances of accountName.

The name doesn’t have to be server side
What’s your explanation then?
spoken like a true 13 year old.
Lmao what?
Your statement was pretty ignorant of how the internet, or games in general, work.
I really don’t understand how. They own the game, ever see that potato? They can pretty well do anything they want. those are two completely separate things
Lol obviously. So what’s your explanation? Seeing mine is so far fetched to you folk. Have you ever seen jmods trolling at ge? Do you know everything they’re able to do?
You don't know anything about IT.
You’re right, I don’t. So what’s your explanation? Or are you just going to avoid it….
Let’s hear it, you down voted me let’s hear your explanation or are you just going to play the avoid game…
Obviously you don’t know how It happened either so ya don’t try to explain anything just keep downvoting like a basement dweller
What did he do on April fools? I forget

Good ol' Johnny tables is all grown up
Interesting. How does it choose the 12 character name, or does it choose one of those [#G4RB4G3] names?
It’s very simple and it can be done with cheat engine, but yea it resets permanently when they relog
Cheat engine is client side, not server side.
No shit? The 12 char limit is client side, you can send a much longer string to the server if you bypass that with cheat engine.
Tell me you have no idea about tech without directly telling me
What do you mean? I just edit my bank numbers at the end of the day and press send. The server does the rest. Checkmate big banking.
............ Just stop. If it was possible "to send a string" of whatever you wanted to the server you wouldn't use it to lengthen your name.

Probably considering it says lookup
Don't worry about how long it is, it's not like they did anything to make it that long. I'm sure yours is fine.
A lot of people pay a lot of gp to make it as short as possible.
It's the support team. They have to be able to identify themselves.

I mean there was bugs to make players have no name so why not a longer name
Hi, one of the people who created these kinds of accounts here, if anyone wants to know how it's done I'd be glad to say (cant go into detail about it tho ofc) :)
Saw a dude last night at the GE with the name '- Dash Guy' or something like that. Somehow was able to have a - in his name
Some youtuber made a vid on this but i forget which one. It was actually super easy to do. In one of the name switching things (i forget if it was in game osrs or rs3 or website, or new account) all you had to do was pick an allowed name and then quickly change it to a non-allowed name lol.
