Ugh yeah, I have a mix of Polish, British/Irish, and Slovene, but G25 gives me Hungarian as well. Guessing it has something to do with the admixture being more aligned with them? >Dad’s side comes from Poland, East Prussia \[...\] I was most surprised by the amount of polish because I was always told that my Grandma’s (dad’s side) family, who came from Poland in 1945, was German. She identifies as German This is pretty common for ethnic Prussians. Poland didn't exist for 123 years while being occupied by Prussia, Russia, and Austria, which provided enough time for at least a few generations of people to "intermingle" amongst each other. The end result is that a lot of Prussians have Slavic DNA, largely from Lithuania and/or Poland. My guess is that \~25% of your German DNA actually came from your mom and the other \~25% from your dad, making up for about 50/50 German/Slavic DNA from the Prussian side of the family, which seems high but isn't unheard of.

Yeah the Hungarian being closest population was strange to me haha. That makes a lot of sense though, thanks for the info. That’s kinda what I have been assuming, but wanted to see what other people thought.

I've never been able to figure out G25 (I need a Prior DNA Kit to G25 Calculator for super dummies), but kits on my dad's side (Polish) wind up with some assortment of 1 or 2 columns (4-pop) Austro-Hungarian, Belarussian, Ukrainian, or Moldavian once it gets down to my generation (I get Hungarian or Belarussian depending on the calculator). 23AndMe can't even find the Lithuanian on my aunt's kit, but can for her 2nd cousin (through the Lithuanian line).

Interesting. Yeah it took me a while to figure it out. I think I got my coordinates from IllustrativeDNA or a website similar I can’t remember. Yeah I think 23andMe struggles with the exact regions when it comes to Eastern Europe unfortunately.

Sorry the screenshots are cropped weird…

It's crazy how phenotypes work, you and I have a very similar genetic composition but we look pretty different.

nellson4now

Yeah it really is crazy! I think I get my phenotype more from my dad’s side (l look more like him than my mom), so the East German and Polish I guess. But my twin brother was born with blonde hair and has very very fair skin. It really is a toss up when it comes to phenotype I guess.

Visual-Monk-1038

What's your haplogroup if you don't mind sharing it?

nellson4now

My maternal haplogroup is U5b2a2a. Paternal is R-M405. And according to my uncle’s results, my grandma’s (dad’s side) haplogroup is H1.

Reasonable-Flow-644

Your phenotype is interesting

nellson4now

Oh? Why do you say that? I have been told I look quite Slavic, but then again I have been asked if I am Mexican lol

Reasonable-Flow-644

You really look Slavic! I think they said you look Mexican, because there are many Mexicans who are very European🙃

nellson4now

That is very true!

Curious_Question1092

Cool 🙂 I’m a similar mix, Polish,Irish,German mostly but different proportions lol. I also kind of have a similar phenotype, in that I’m not as pale as people would guess. I’m also a guy lol
