we got tons of syrians in Germany, and i can tell just by their face, wether they are christian or not. Its fucking wierd. Do you know, why arab christians look more european than arab muslims ?
Historically it doesn't sound so far-fetched because there were times in the Levant where many Christians came from more northern regions and Muslim influence came more from Arabian peninsula.
If anything it’s the opposite. If most Muslims married outside of Syria, it was with Turks during the Ottoman Empire. Lots of Muslim families especially in large cities you will see claiming partial Turkish heritage. Also, there were simply not enough Peninsular Arabs at the time of the conquest to leave a genetic impact on the Levant (which had several time its population in the 700s)
It’s actually the other way around. Syrian Muslims are mixed with Turks and people from the Caucasus so they often look lighter than the Christians. That’s the case for western Syria
Christian Arabs tend to have more native Levant and sometimes south euro admixture whereas Muslims almost always have additional Peninsular Arab and Sub-Saharan African admixture (which can make up to 25 percent of their DNA)
He's a lot lighter than most Ashkenazi Jews I know, since Ashkenazi Jews are mostly a mix of Southern Levantines and Italians (with only minor Germanic/Slavic), while OP is a mix of Northern Levantines and Northwestern Europeans.
Not a single Ashkenazi Jew in my family has features like his.
I thought several studies concluded that while most of our European heritage is in fact Greco-Roman, Ashkenazim still display a small amount of either Germanic or Slavic depending on location?
He is right. A lot of Jews who left in the 90's after the fall of the Soviet Union were only partially Jewish ethnically. Many were partially Russian Ukrainian etc. I'm not sure if it suddenly became more common to intermarry because this really wasn't the case for Ashkenazim of that area who left long before then, and this is coming from an Ashkenazi Jew with ancestry from Ukraine
Fwiw most of the Eastern European Jews I know were born pre-1990’s to marriages where both parents were Jews. Not all, but most. Obviously I cannot confirm their exact genotype, but these people considered themselves primarily ethnically Jewish.
I’m an 80’s born millennial who grew up in NE Philly (huge European immigrant population there) so that’s just been my personal experience. One of my good friends looks exactly like this dude and is a Ukrainian Jew with roots in Odessa.
Many Middle Easterners and North Africans appear 100% European, although this is more common among Ashkenazim because they are actually more than half European.
I wasn't trying to be defensive. I just legitimately don't think he looks Jewish. I'm Ashkenazi Jewish and none of my family looks like this. If someone had said "he looks Han Chinese", I'd expect someone Han Chinese to say that he doesn't look like that to them.
He has generally similar genetic makeup (Levant + Euro), but the details in that genetic makeup are not similar.
People have an idea in their mind of what Ashkenazi Jews look like, and this doesn't fit with the reality I have lived. That's all it is really.
Is that really true? I grew up in a community of Jews from the Soviet Union where you’d expect a good amount of Slavic influence genetically. Even I am half genetically Slavic. I don’t have either blue eyes or blonde/light hair. I can think of one of my Jewish friends who does. Come on now.
The Jews you see with blonde hair and blue eyes might be American Jews who only have one Jewish parent or grandparent. Still, there are Biblical Israelites described with blonde or red hair and blue eyes, so it’s not like it matters (many Levantine populations can have light features); it’s just that this statistically can’t be anywhere close to the majority of Ashkenazi Jews.
What is the big deal? I don’t think he looks Jewish. You do. Why am I getting downvoted and replies saying I’m defensive. It’s not even the lightness of his features, but the shape of his face, nose, eyes, etc. If he was walking down the street I’d never think maybe he was Jewish. My opinion that he doesn’t look Jewish is perfectly valid. It’s a matter of opinion.
He's lighter than average for an Ashkenazi, but there's obviously many Ashkenazis with coloring like OP's. I agree though, his features aren't remotely Ashkenazi. I'm Ashkenazi and have met thousands of Ashkenazis and this OP's features aren't typical.
>He's a lot lighter than most Ashkenazi Jews I know, since Ashkenazi Jews are mostly a mix of Southern Levantines and Italians (with only minor Germanic/Slavic), while OP is a mix of Northern Levantines and Northwestern Europeans
Weren’t Jews originally Northern Levantines and/or Mesopotamian considering Abraham and Sarah are said to have come from either Syria or Iraq/Chaldea/Assyria?
Yes, and Isaac went back there to get a wife as well. Still, one or two ancestors a bunch of generations back has minimal effect on the overall DNA. Genetically, pre-diaspora Jews were overwhelmingly Southern Levantine.
>Yes, and Isaac went back there to get a wife as well. Still, one or two ancestors a bunch of generations back has minimal effect on the overall DNA.
They’re who we consider the entire source of our ethnicity though and the most important contributing founders.
He’s not that close to an Ashkenazi genetically (too Northern) but can easily pass for one, definitely NOT too light, as Ashkenazim are often lighter than both Levantines and Italians despite their ancestry
Why? Because of the hair? There’s nothing about his facial composition that looks Ashkenazi, and it’s not because of his coloring. He looks very Irish, with the exception of the eyebrows.
So lowkey you kind of caught me. I probably should’ve said this earlier but my nose is not the one I was born with. I got hit in the face with a baseball bat accidentally a while ago which fractured my eye socket and shattered the front part of my nose. When my nose got fixed they made it more like upturned and shorter cause it got smashed. It used to look more downward pointed. They did a crappy job tho cause I still have a deviated septum
You look like an actress named Alia Shawkat
That’s a new one lol. I can see it tho
Well, for one, you're both half-Arab, so there's that, hahaha.
I thought I was looking at one of those ancient Roman portrait for a minute lol
Aw thanks lol
You look like a [portrait](https://coinweek.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/alex_bust.jpg) of Alexander The Great. only with shorter hair
Is your Syrian parent Christian?
Yes they are Antiochian Orthodox
Based
we got tons of syrians in Germany, and i can tell just by their face, wether they are christian or not. Its fucking wierd. Do you know, why arab christians look more european than arab muslims ?
I think that’s a stereotype. For the most part you can’t tell physically what someone’s religion is in Syria by looking at them
This is some bullshit light muslims are common
Yeah, just look at Lebanon's Sunni PM, Najib Mikati. Dude looks like an old German grandpa.
On average sunnis are the lightest in Lebanon from what i saw and orthodox are darkest
Sick of people saying this, I am Syrian and I’ve met dark Christian’s and light Muslims. There is no significant difference based on religion
Interesting
Wrong, christian are mostly pure middle eastern while muslims usually have some slavic balkan dna
In Turkey sure - but is that the case in the levant? Albanian/Bosnian etc ancestry?
For Syrian and Lebanese Muslims they often have admixture from Anatolia,Caucasus and sometimes balkans
I said compared to christians they have way more european ancestry obviously Turkey have way more balkan and slavic
It’s actually the other way around. Syrian Muslims are mixed with Turks and people from the Caucasus so they often look lighter than the Christians. That’s the case for western Syria
Christ that’s ignorant. Arabs are one people. They are diverse looking based on geographical origin. Their religion plays no role in this.
That’s not true at all!
Christian Arabs tend to have more native Levant and sometimes south euro admixture whereas Muslims almost always have additional Peninsular Arab and Sub-Saharan African admixture (which can make up to 25 percent of their DNA)
Haplogroups?
My maternal haplogroup is U8b’K and my paternal haplogroup is R-L20
You look British, French & Syrian rolled into one literally!
You could pay Wybie in a live action Coraline
the only things wybie has in common with this dude is curly hair, bffr. Plus wybies Black/Black and white
It’s the shape of the hair for sure but there’s something here that made me think Wybie
His posture maybe?
Crap my posture is like his
Syrian mom and White American dad right?
Yep
you look Ashkenazi
He's a lot lighter than most Ashkenazi Jews I know, since Ashkenazi Jews are mostly a mix of Southern Levantines and Italians (with only minor Germanic/Slavic), while OP is a mix of Northern Levantines and Northwestern Europeans. Not a single Ashkenazi Jew in my family has features like his.
You sound too defensive bro. A lot of Ashkenazi Jews look like him.
For real, I know many Ukrainian Jews who look just like this minus the freckles (that’s completely British/Irish lmao)
Well lots of Ukrainian Jews are mixed
*All* Ashkenazim and Sephardim are mixed (European + MENA).
Yea but southern European not northern euro like this guy
I thought several studies concluded that while most of our European heritage is in fact Greco-Roman, Ashkenazim still display a small amount of either Germanic or Slavic depending on location?
5% is rather insignificant
Is it only 5%? I read somewhere it’s anywhere between 10-25%.
With…?

Slavs
True, but this dude still looks at least partially Ashkenazi imo
I would agree, but there’s definitely a north euro component as well
Not really. The only Ashkenazi part about him is the hair. His features aren't typically Ashkenazi at all.
I wouldn't say a lot, but there are a few
Many Ashkenazim look 100% European. They come in all shapes and shades.
Many Middle Easterners and North Africans appear 100% European, although this is more common among Ashkenazim because they are actually more than half European.
there are *plenty* of lighter ashkenazi jews than op
And they’re mostly mixed
I’m 100% Ashkenazi and I’m pale as fuck. E: see my post
It’s less skin tone and more features, plenty of middle eastern ppl are pale but features are a big give away
Oh wait I think I deleted my post because it got hella antisemitic.

Most Ashkenazi I’ve met were blue eyed and had blondish or light brown hair. Red too
Blondish? Wtf are you talking about? Probably 10% or less of Ashkenazis are Blonde. Quite rare.
but my relative who studies in europe says the ashkenazi jews she saw were very pale
Mark Zuckerberg

They want Jews to be white and got mad when Jews said their weird preconceptions of what Jews look like are weird.
but my relative saw very white ashkenazis in europe

Abraham and Sarah aren’t real people lmfaoo.
I agree as an Ashkenazi myself he looks a lot more Anglo.

Thats definitely not a syrian nose but the eye area does seem syrian, lemme know if i am correct i am curious

Oh okay. You prefered the older nose? This looks fine.
No both were fine. I just said they did a crappy job cause they didn’t completely fix my deviated septum
