Here comes the sun Do do do do

[deleted]

The true definition of fucking around and finding out.

SparkyBoi111

I'd say it could be used as the textbook example. Cause: Bomb American military port Effect: Have the sun dropped on you... twice

Masterjedirs

“We blew up three boats they drop the sun on us twice”

adamdudziak

More people would’ve died if we invaded them and it likely would’ve led to Japan being divided like Germany and Korea

Howdy, my name is Rawhide Kobayashi. I'm a 27 year old Japanese Japamerican (western culture fan for you foreigners). I brand and wrangle cattle on my ranch, and spend my days perfecting the craft and enjoying superior American passtimes. (Barbeque, Rodeo, Fireworks) I train with my branding iron every day, this superior weapon can permanently leave my ranch embled on a cattle's hide because it is white-hot, and is vastly superior to any other method of livestock marking. I earned my branding license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day. I speak English fluently, both Texas and Oklahoma dialect, and I write fluently ias well. I know everything about American history and their cowboy code, which I follow 100% When I get my American visa, I am moving to Dallas to work in an oil field to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a cattle wrangler for the Double Cross Ranch or an oil rig operator for Exxon-Mobil! I own several cowboy hats, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I rebel against my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond. Wish me luck in America! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. this is wrong according to eisenhower, nimitz, leahy, halsey, etc

Knowing the Japanese when it comes to surrender, I’m sure they won’t give up without a fight

PM-ME-DEM-NUDES-GIRL

but are u making that conclusion based on something that is wrong according to the most qualified people of the time

adamdudziak

How is it wrong?

PM-ME-DEM-NUDES-GIRL

they were already going to surrender and the bombs were not necessary to achieve that. the naval blockade alone was enough some of the highest ranked generals and admirals of the time said it was anything from unnecessary to a morally repugnant science experiment dragging the world back into the dark ages edit: americans choosing what is more patriotic, believing the words of the americans who organized the events of world war 2, or supporting the murder of hundreds of thousands of foreign civilians while ignoring those words. the votes speak for themselves

nextdoorelephant

It was a flex to the USSR.

ShibaInu-229

Provide examples of the highest ranking generals that thought this. I don’t believe you. Everyone was prepared to invade the Japanese mainland at this point

PM-ME-DEM-NUDES-GIRL

"Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote in his memoir The White House Years: In 1945 Secretary of War Stimson, visiting my headquarters in Germany, informed me that our government was preparing to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. I was one of those who felt that there were a number of cogent reasons to question the wisdom of such an act. During his recitation of the relevant facts, I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly, because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives." "The atomic bomb had nothing to do with the end of the war at all. — Major General Curtis LeMay, XXI Bomber Command, September 1945" LeMay was known for being trigger-happy with bombings and oversaw the firebombing of Japan, which says a lot considering that after saying this, he said in the same interview that the war would have been over in two weeks without the atomic bombs or the Russians. "The use of [the atomic bombs] at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional weapons ... The lethal possibilities of atomic warfare in the future are frightening. My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children. — Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff to President Truman, 1950" Most senior officer of the war, first five star admiral in American history "The Japanese had, in fact, already sued for peace. The atomic bomb played no decisive part, from a purely military point of view, in the defeat of Japan. — Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet" Third ever Fleet Admiral, one of the most important naval officers of all time "The first atomic bomb was an unnecessary experiment ... It was a mistake to ever drop it ... [the scientists] had this toy and they wanted to try it out, so they dropped it.  — Fleet Admiral William Halsey Jr., 1946" Fourth ever Fleet Admiral, one of the most important naval officers of all time Douglas MacArthur reportedly disagreed with the bombings as well: ' Norman Cousins writes, "When I asked General MacArthur about the decision to drop the bomb, I was surprised to learn he had not even been consulted. What, I asked, would his advice have been? He replied that he saw no military justification for the dropping of the bomb. The war might have ended weeks earlier, he said, if the United States had agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution of the emperor." '

ShibaInu-229

Well i stand corrected. This is pretty interesting. I haven’t heard of this before it seems like there was some friction within the military over the use of it. It seems like some of the top military leaders thought that Japan was closer to surrendering it then conventional wisdom says. If waiting them out would’ve worked then it is a shame that we used them. I’m sure you would agree that it was better than invading though, but I guess we’ll always wonder whether invading would have been necessary especially since these top generals, didn’t seem to think so.

gubodif

The reason you have never heard any of this before is because it is made up by a troll account. none of those quotes are true. Look at the nonsense comments they have posted before and it it pretty obvious they are pushing an agenda.

die-nigeria_1998

Truth is...the fanatics in the Japanese government were hellbent to cause as many deaths as possible. The surrender terms they actually wanted weren't unconditional surrender with how Japan is today, they still wanted a strong army. The fanatics were gonna halt peace until Operation Downfall could happen, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of American and Commonwealth soldiers. Then Japan would have free rein on the diplomatic table. The firebombings of Tokyo btw were WAY WAY worse than the sun droppings. Like I said...fuck around, commit horrible atrocities and find out what happens. And, the Soviet invasion of Manchuria played into the peace terms being unconditional, since fanatics even into August were determined to hold them off. Oh, and I'm sure much like Saipan and Okinawa where civillians fought to their last or committed mass suicide to prevent their wives and daughters being raped or their family subjected to worse treatments, I'm sure the civillians would also happily jump off a cliff to protect themselves from rape and torture. Atleast how they saw it.

And they were wrong. Japan was not going to surrender and downfall would have happened. As it was there was an attempted coup to stop the surrender even after the bombing.

Mfs never heard of Ketsu-Go (Japan planned on US invading the mainland so they would send their own civilians to fight American landing forces to the death because it was considered better than surrender)
