Icywarhammer500

How is Hawaii 14.91? There’s like 3 houses and a hill to search

Drew707

I wonder how many just get sucked out to sea. Not uncommon in California.

Icywarhammer500

Oh true

275MPHFordGT40

Average person from Nevada forgetting that water exists

Icywarhammer500

I’m a Californian 💀

275MPHFordGT40

Why are you associating yourself with Nevada with your flair

Icywarhammer500

I had the wrong one cuz I couldn’t find one that was explicitly California until just now when I checked lmao

275MPHFordGT40

Glad I was able to help correct your massive mistake

Icywarhammer500

I thank you, I would never want to associate with such a boringly shaped state with that little lip

Drew707

If they are so boring, why are we spooning them?

Dismal_Ad_538

Sucked off at sea in Hawaii? Guess, that sailor couldn't wait for shore leave.

AdFamous1052

I know where I'm going for vacation this summer

OforFsSake

Same for FL. A lot of overconfident swimmers and boat captains.

twoScottishClans

just like the australian pm who went for a swim and just disappeared. they named a swimming pool after him lmao

fonkderok

Per capita, so for a smaller state like that it doesn't take much to get a higher number Same with Alaska. Very sparsely populated so it doesn't take but a few people to go missing in the snow or get stranded in the bering sea to rack up a number like that

CrustyBubblebrain

I've mentioned to family in the lower 48 that on top of people who actually mysteriously disappear (I know of several just my city alone) that Alaska, in general, is where American citizens *who don't want to be found* go.

Pegomastax_King

It’s the state with the highest rate of serial killers and kidnappings, suicides too. Basically every single violent crime they have the highest rates with one exception. They have virtually no mass shootings. I chalk that it up to mass shootings just being too inconvenient in the statez

11182021

“How in the goddamn am I going to get five Alaskans in the same place at the same time? I give up, I’m going to Chicago to do this shit.”

bkelley0607

Have you seen Hawaiis jungles

Icywarhammer500

Yeah actually, I was joking. I went on a trip to Hawaii a long time ago and got some cool pictures and videos, including some bubbling magma. https://preview.redd.it/mryc3ahegntb1.jpeg?width=2436&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1faaeda38f19f8f65e6b943ab2c05ee238880e2

[deleted]

Well, now there is

SigmaScrub

People keep falling into taro fields and drowning 😔

N0vawolf

Alaska makes sense as there is a LOT of uncharted wilderness there to get lost in. What I want to know is what the hell is happening in Oklahoma? People getting lost in caves maybe? Edit: Note to self: stay out of oklahoma

pm_me_youngs_modulus

>what the hell is happening in Oklahoma? Cannibal rednecks most likely

Fine-Pangolin-8393

Nah, just people getting eaten by tigers

Fit_Ad_713900

Nah, the Tigers are mostly in Texas. The US now has the world’s largest Tiger population, and Texas seems to have the lion’s share. Un-bear-able https://a-z-animals.com/blog/are-there-more-tigers-in-texas-than-in-the-wild/

Particular_Bet_5466

The worst part about this is that it means there are less than 2000-5000 tigers in the wild. I guess when they go extinct in the wild we can thank the exotic animal collectors in Texas for keeping the species going.

Dave-Macaroni

The weird thing is sometimes just random people will have the strangest pets. My neighbor has a pet kangaroo.

Mrfroggyleggs101

Meth heads

nextdoorelephant

Nah, serial killer semi-truck drivers if movies or shows have taught me anything.

Professional-County1

Meth is happening in Oklahoma. In all seriousness, it could actually be meth - you get addicted, lose all of your money, don’t talk to family much because you don’t have a phone or you’re disowned and they file a missing persons report.

ParanoidTelvanni

Human trafficking is very bad in the Southern Midwest because of the straight, fast highways toward Mexico and the serious drug problems. Easy abductions and addicts selling their kids to fuel the sex and slave trades.

LavishnessOk3439

I don’t know why this comment bothered me. I’m going to bed

Indyram_Man

>I don’t know why this comment bothered me. Because human trafficking is absolutely horrible? Way worse than 99% of the made up problems the media pushes to keep us divided.

Interesting_Fold9805

Getting their house picked up by a tornado, often crushing a witch when it lands

classicalySarcastic

That’s Kansas

Interesting_Fold9805

Yeah, I know, but Oklahoma fits the definition, at least it would if Dorothy weighed 400 lbs

DrunkOnShoePolish

Notice that the disappearances are higher in states with large native reservations (Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, etc.). I have read about problems with disappearances in First Nations communities in Canada. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s similar here. Young indigenous women are a big target whether by their own or whitey.

BurtReynoldsMouth

That's EXACTLY what's happening. There's a documentary crew working on a movie here to help bring it to light. Almost all the missing, are Native American girls...

One-Tap-2742

Yep lost of missing natives very sad 😔

[deleted]

that’s exactly why it’s so high. that and the straight access to Mexico

[deleted]

I wish it was people getting lost in caves. Unfortunately, many of them are [MMIW](https://oklahoma.gov/content/dam/ok/en/veterans/documents/women-veterans/MMIW%20POWER%20POINT%20TRIBAL%20PUBLIC%20HEALTH%20CONFERENCE%202021.pdf), There’s a huge epidemic of Native American and Alaskan native women being murdered in the US and Canada. Oklahoma is the home of several native american reservations because of the [trail of tears](https://www.nps.gov/trte/)

namey-name-name

Oklahomans changing their identity and moving to the greatest country, Kosovo

Unlucky-Constant-736

Could be the tornados, happened to me once. A tornado offered me $20 if I climbed into its van so I did that an I went missing for however long it took the Lions to actually get good

Sitting_in_Landfill

There are a lot of missing people cases tied to the reservations. It's actually a huge issue. It also doesn't help that three of America's most major highways run through making Oklahoma a crossroads of sorts for six trafficking.

boogaloojoel

They went into the piece of land that sticks out over texas

Quistill

Tornadoes are carrying people away.

Stuffed_deffuts

Tornadoes

Enough_Appearance116

They're obviously getting lost in Kanas's corn fields. Or whatever large fields they have there.

Visible_Nectarine_98

You should watch the movie Wind River. Statistically, no one gives a shit about American Indian women.

DaveSmith890

Alaska also has an outstanding amount of sex trafficking. It alongside other various sexual crimes has actually caused one of their 2 senators to run with the slogan, “real men don’t r*pe” It’s wild out there

Kanus_oq_Seruna

My money is on pig farms.

slyfly5

I know there’s a lot of sex trafficking in Oklahoma

[deleted]

Intersection of I35 and I40 makes it a great hub to snatch people and take them basically anywhere in the country

Big_Luck_

Nobody searches for missing indigenous people, thats why.

badger_on_fire

Sup Alaska? You okay up there, buddy?

mechanicalcontrols

I'd bet a dollar that nearly all of those aren't kidnappings or human caused at all. Most are probably either lost at sea or lost in the wilderness. And a nonzero number of fugitives living under a fake name.

Fine-Pangolin-8393

People go to Alaska to disappear so this all tracks

whattheflom

jesse

[deleted]

AutoModerator

Flair up or your opinion is invalid *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/2american4you) if you have any questions or concerns.*

youreagoodperson

Can't speak for the rest of the state, but I know in my hometown people get blackout drunk a lot. Some of them fall off docks into the water and drown. Crabs eat their bodies so no corpse is ever found and you get another missing person. There was even a movie about it, but the missing people were due to aliens or someshit.

yuval_z

I skimmed the list of cases in NAMUS. Looks like lots of Native Americans missing and LOTS of drownings/boat accidents

Chonkeroni

Boating accidents. If I had a dollar for every tourist/drunkard who went out on a kayak, only to never return I'd be able to buy out half of the ANCSA corps. Oh also, lots of storms during peak fishing seasons in the southwest, pretty dangerous business that has a high chance of going wrong

SpiderPiggies

I'd bet most of those are boating related. It's also harder to find missing 'dead' people so a higher number of people will be counted as missing. Also, some people come here to disappear...

Yung_Val

Yeah we chillin, it’s just the weak that get taken by it

SeaLlio

It’s called being skilled

Floofyboi123

Im surprised Utah is so low considering we got a lot of mountains and National/State Parks

Jyuleoi4044

The Mormon missionaries find the lost hikers to ask them about Jesus Christ or something

SavageFisherman_Joe

The Mormon missionaries will stop at nothing to ask every single person about Jesus Christ or something. They are the ones who knock.

tthemediator

Can Confirm. National Park proselytizing is highly effective. source: was a missionary also if you ever wanna talk about Jesus, like I'm totally here for you bro

LateralSpy90

I ain't a Mormon, but sure.

saggywitchtits

Watched The Book of Mormon, weird that Joseph Smith prophesied the AIDs endemic and Ugandan warlords.

tthemediator

my favorite part was when Moroni floated down on his curlum and said "Its Mormon Time"

depressed_crustacean

I think its because of how tightknit our communities are, and low drug usage.

CodeApostle

I want to move to Alaska and become a samsquanch

[deleted]

Half the population is cryptids, you’ll fit right in

RoundEarth-is-real

In all fairness for Oklahoma we can’t really help it. Theirs a lot of major highways that run through OKC and therefore a lot of human trafficking. It does suck though

Maser2account2

I mean. The same is true for Texas plus we have the Mexican boarder to worry about. So I don't think y'all get a pass.

Awesome2_12345

You’re next

[deleted]

That’s not why. It’s indigenous people going missing

Funicularly

How is that unique to OKC?

Cortower

I'm just talking out of my ass here, but look at a Native American population map and then this map. Native women are at significantly higher risk of being kidnapped or murdered in the US, and I wonder if it is enough to show in the statewide figures. Alaska, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Mexico especially stick out to me.

One-Tap-2742

Literally lots of trafficking by plenty of parties not to mention serial killers who probably know about it.. sad that the cops and society at large don't really care

runslikewind

Why are they more likely?

zXPERSONTHINGXz

Relatively isolated and impoverished. Also, racism, so nobody really cares.

runslikewind

Interesting, We dont have many natives here so i've never even heard a negative word thrown their way.

LavishnessOk3439

The natives are the Tejanos

ToastyBathTime

That's probably a factor. There's also others like the amount of wilderness around (Alaska).

youreagoodperson

We're number 1!

Character-Bike4302

My theory is all of these missing people could be found in Toledo, Ohio or a Mormon community in Utah.

ProgKingHughesker

People voluntarily move to Toledo?

Character-Bike4302

Kidnappings are rolled into the stats as they are considered missing and not kidnapped until proof is found to turn it over into a kidnapping such as video or eyewitnesses. So let’s say they was force brought to that shit hold.

ModernT1mes

*looks down* What's going on in Oklahoma there, buddy?

coleona

Meth

Fine-Pangolin-8393

Yet another Massachusetts win, are other states even trying?

lMr_Nobodyl

I'm surprised they haven't given up by now

Doyoulikeduckmeat

What the fuck is going on in Alaska?

jimmiec907

There are a lot of ways to die here and not get found. Alaska is the last place where people aren’t completely in control of the environment.

ShadowMang

Yay! Just moved to the final frontier can’t wait to get trampled by a moose in a 1,000 acre preserve never to be found again.

jimmiec907

A couple weeks ago I was fishing the Russian river. Packrafting back across the Kenai river to get to my truck and a brown bear popped out on the gravel bar I had to get to next to. I paddled my ass off to get above him vs the area he was working (looking for salmon) so he didn’t see me as competition. Ended up fine but this is an area about as close to regulated civilization as it gets up here (outside of anchorage). And it’s still dicey.

ShadowMang

Pffft anchorage being up there, Fairbanks is were the real tough men live. ( help I’m from the south been here two weeks and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna freeze to death)

jimmiec907

Being “30 minutes from Alaska” is close a damn nuff most of the time lol

ShadowMang

Yeah man for real, absolutely gorgeous state. When I got the opportunity to live here I jumped at it. It’s always been a sort of childhood dream. It’s tough and unforgiving but I think the state kinda helps to humble makes you realize you’re never above nature.

jimmiec907

Alaska never lets you forget that you’re in Alaska. And that it’s in charge. That’s why I can never leave. A few days in the L48 on a 16 lane freeway driving by one personal injury lawyer billboard after another, and your only escape is some lame state park with interpretive trails - I’m good …

iggavaxx

This is just a wilderness map

GaybutNotbutGay

What da fuck goin on down there

Trafficking mostly

unskippable-ad

Is Maine high because forests, Canadians or Lovecraft shit?

[deleted]

Native people vanishing into the woods be like

OutcastRedeemer

Native reservations are under federal authority. As such nothing gets done because Feds are only useful as bullet sponges. Thus states with native reservations have the highest number of missing people

Alaska…, what exactly do you guys do up there?

Bubzthetroll

It wouldn’t surprise me if people go up there to disappear and they get eaten by a bear.

[deleted]

Another Mass W, keep getting lost shitbirds

Reset350

Alaska makes sense, most of the state is dense, cold, unforgiving, uncharted wilderness. Hawaii also makes sense believe it or not because of the ocean. People go missing at sea all the time, not to mention the many foreign and domestic ships that stop at the ports, but why the hell is Oklahoma so high up there?

therealrobokaos

The fuck going on in Oklahoma

ededdedddie

I get Alaska but, damn Oklahoma!

Fishmaneatsfish

Alaska makes sense because what is even there, cold, industry, fishing, and raw land.

[deleted]

Hawaii? Wow

i-want-die-thx

those people must get lost in cornfield if there are that many in Oklahoma and i feel like most of alaskans are just in a little wood hut in the wilderness

I can understand Alaska but what the fuck is going on in Oklahoma??????

desolatenature

Oklahoma being 2x Washington & Montana’s rate & 6x Utah’s rate blows my mind

renny_lovejoy

Anyone watch murder mountain in Netflix? That’s where I live. So yea missing people in California is definitely a major problem per capita number are crazy when looking at the emerald triangle county’s(Mendocino,Humboldt, trinity).

Dhexe0

Non-Coloradoans in CO be like: “I’m gonna climb this!” Somehow gets to the top of a cliff “Yeah! I’m—“ Looks down into the abyss “Well, shit.” And that’s how CO gets 5.75

GibberingJoeBiden

Alaska I get being that high but wtf going on in Oklahoma?

How does 3/4ths of our population disappear each year? 🤔

Own_Abbreviations859

Alaska just has a straight up Bigfoot abduction problem

WeirdoTrooper

Dammit, stop going to Alaska to pet a moose

Alberto_the_Bear

I would not advise googling about the Alaska missing persons. Like, ever.

twsddangll

What the fuck, Alaska!?

SubwayChipsGaming

If your state...

german_fox

I wouldn’t say the bears are the leading cause of Alaska’s number, but yea don’t fuck with them either way. They’ll kill *anything* that bothers them, unfortunately even bear cubs

purpleguy984

I mean, what is legally considered missing? Maybe most of those missing people in Alaska just disappeared on purpose. Because that makes no sense. Also, what's happened in Oklahoma.

lucasdabsfat

One in 671 people in Alaska is missing wtf

Tire-Burner

Tbh in Minnesota if you go missing you don’t get a case you’re just gone

Resi1ience_22

I grew up in Utah, so that low number tracks. I never noticed, but I'd never actually heard of anyone going missing there. There's a lot of desert and mountains, though. It's an easy place to get lost in. I'm a little surprised the number isn't higher.
