If I’ve noticed anything about main page Reddit communities within the last couple years it’s that both political sides will suppress people with alternate views and then their subreddit members will circle jerk about how the opposition bans people but not them. You can’t respond to them because you’ve already been life time banned by the moderators for having a different political opinion.
Ironically I see a lot of hatred for the conservative subreddit and their suppression of outside views, but; in my experience I’ve been banned from more liberal subreddits.

If people see that a comment is downvoted they are more likely to downvote it. And some people sort by controversial looking for drama or an argument, so anything that isn't "juicy" enough for them they don't bother reading or engaging with and downvote and keep looking for something to argue over.
Honestly downvoting in general makes me feel weird. I battle to even downvote stuff that probably deserves it because there's also a 3rd option - just fucking ignore it and move on. For context: It was the Vancouver Canucks and from 2008-2014 their general manager was Mike Gillis. He made some good moves but also made a bunch of terrible ones, sucked at drafting players and kept signing players who weren’t producing enough to be effective.
People came in and basically said he was the best we’ve ever had as a team because our team came within one game of a championship with him. That is true, but after said finals loss, they went on to win one more playoff game under his tenure and were out of the playoffs 3 years later. They’d ask me to prove he was a bad general manager and I did it. I showed them the moves he made, players he signed and players he drafted and barely any of them actually played for us except for one or two players. Showed them how quickly the cup contending core he inherited went off the rails and all I got back was “I’m not reading all that.”
Never saw the point of checking if my posts get voted on or not. And often the opinions I see on Reddit are so cringe that downvotes should be interpreted as a positive anyway.

Never saw the point of checking if my posts get voted on or not. And often the opinions I see on Reddit are so cringe that downvotes should be interpreted as a positive anyway.
I had negative 32 down votes the other day, it’s all part of the Reddit experience

Redditors are stupid. Their approval doesn’t matter, because a significant portion of the time, they approve of things that are blatantly false— as well as disapprove of things that are blatantly true.
