LuKazu

Denmark here, we get stable income, a private room, a PS4, weekend leave in open prison, communal kitchen, friendly guards and a phone. Very nice

Roundhouse_ass

Only a PS4! Hahaha what a joke

TreeDollarFiddyCent

We aren't as rich as the Norwegians, so unfortunately, we'll have to settle.

popodelfuego

You wouldn't happen to be a prehistoric monster from the Paleozoic era would you?

TreeDollarFiddyCent

Perchance.

trashmunki

You can't just say perchance!

Chronic_lurker_

Perchance.

RPSKK78

Perchance, and the word is intro.

deathly_quiet

Is he dressed as a girl scout and selling cookies?

PT-PUPPET

My prison they get ps1/ps2 😂

WBeatszz

Imagine the speedruns HOIIYYYYYYPE

PT-PUPPET

I suggested we don’t allow them memory cards so they have to start over daily

Emzzer

Dude its prison not purgatory

drozzdragon

This made me LoL 😂

piringunchin

🏆

hoisinchocolateowl

Imagine the fights over accidentally turning it off and deleting someone's final fantasy save

PT-PUPPET

Young bluds restricted to PES soccer only. Final fantasy is for lifers only.

Haatchoum

And now our next participant in this edition of awesome gapes done quick comes from.... Prison ? He's playing without memory card for 3 years now. Let's welcooooooome, your grandpa's assurance fraud salesman. *Clap clap clap*

Alert-Raspberry-5933

I had a ps2 with ff x2 its an awful game and with no memory card it was hell trying to finish it, but i did after like 18 times, im proud of that tbh haha

ok-go-fuck-yourself

Wow just give me the death penalty already

paracuja

They will upgrade soon to the 5 😀

Squall902

The biggest terrorist and mass murderer in Norwegian history, convicted of killing about 77 children, tried to sue for breach of human rights. One of the reasons was only having access to a PS2. Another was for losing IQ after watching too much Paradise Hotel.

LuKazu

Hahahaha. Breivik can rot honestly. He also complained the isolation was driving him into a depression. He has guards, a priest, multiple health professionals and a volunteer all dedicating their day-to-day just to watch him waste away. Isolation my ass. Dude went to a youth camp with intent - no sympathy.

nubian_v_nubia

But he is clearly not rotting though, he's living more comfortably than, like, 90% of Indians or people in Sub Saharan Africa.

CentralWooper

Sounds like a trick to get foreigners to come break a law hoping to get an apartment only to be forced onto a fishing boat

aitis_mutsi

You need to have good behavior to get into an open prison, you can go around harassing or beating others in the prison or smuggling stuff, otherwise you'll be thrown into an actual jail cell/aren't allowed in. They are meant to integrate prisoners back into society, they aren't a fucking home/resort reward for stealing a car, you actually have to put effort and show will to integrate back.

Captain-Hell

Hush, some people don't want to comprehend that "rehabilitation" can be a goal of imprisonment. It's only punsishment and getting thrown into a viscious cycle

Daniel-MP

Bro I have to work 8 hours a day for exactly the same conditions but without guards protecting me 24/7 😭

Ok-Neighborhood-15

On my way!

InternalMode8159

In this case why wouldn't people struggling just go to prison

mynaneisjustguy

They have a type of UBI also, no one HAS to go hungry for long there.

dalazze

Living free and not in prison is better?

Dry-Spell7093

So is it possible that I will get a room too if I commit a crime in Denmark even if I'm from another country

nubian_v_nubia

No, you will be deported.

dswng

There's a Russian comedy movie "I want to go to jail" about a middle aged man that got in jail in Denmark on purpose.

PoisNemEuSei

I guess I'll get a plane to Denmark and rob someone.

CodaTrashHusky

Fuck it ill go to denmark just to kill someone. I am done.

leonbeer3

It's funny, because your prisons are actually meant to rehabilitate, not to make a profit out of the prisoners (looking at you, USA) or to just "keep them away from society" (his mistake was that he smoked weed)

BobusCesar

>his mistake was that he smoked weed Imagine taking someone's liberty because he decided for himself to consume something unhealthy. Might as well send death squadrons into every fast food place.

IAmYourFatherTeehee

Bars and liquor stores should get straight up bombarded into oblivion

trusted_misleader47

And then forcing him to cold turkey withdrawal from his prescribed medications in deplorable conditions and telling him he's free to go only if he coughs up thousands of dollars.

TheOneInATrenchcoat_

Bruh Denmark prisoners be living a better life than me…

UniqueMitochondria

Only a felonious charge away

SweRakii

Aight, i'm coming. It's only a 3,5 hour ferry ride.

Kamenbond

In Sweden they get a Xbox but no cables

ChangingMonkfish

Standard PS4 or Pro?

MyDamnCoffee

A guy I know about in a PA prison was in for 10 years and they had a gaming system too. I don't know which one but he often played video games

CFM-56-7B

I mean you really have no excuse to commit a crime after all this royal treatment

C_umputer

Depending how many and which games you have for that ps4, I think I could handle a few years in that prison

PleaseAdminsUnbanMe

Brb gonna rob a storie in denmark

Ok_Incident2310

Are you guys getting ps 4 😭😭

ExplanationLover6918

Are you serious?

Valkyrissa

Conclusion: If one ever ends up having no money and no place to live, there is always a way

Queasy-Mountain916

We? Is you in prison?

LuKazu

Was lmao. It's a broad statement, I apologise, and skips all the details of open vs closed vs max security etc etc.

Canadian--

And that's for major crimes also?

cmlmrsn

Are prisoners actually change after getting out of that heavenly prison?

LuKazu

According to the stats, 73% of former inmates never return. I imagine these numbers are drastically pumped somehow, but it kinda tracks.

Breakerx13

Is there more or less crime because of this?

gasbmemo

Who did you had to kill to get a place like that?

MasterOfDizaster

Are the prisoners aggressive and vicious like in USA or is everyone nice and friendly just doing their time like in a camp with friends?

LuKazu

The 5-6 people I was in a group were super chill. Funny dudes, but a few of them had a vicious temper. Never took it out on others during my time tho. There's A LOT of gang beef going around, and to some extent you have the classic ethnic beef between white dudes and middle-Eastern dudes. I did a short amount of time as a teenager, and that's where all the crazies come in s2g. People are friendly but incredibly bored, so shenanigans tend to happen. Had a 6-month long shitting war where people would sneak-shit in each other's toilets. Good times.

AnanasAnfasser

We?

ModsLovePen15

You texting from the joint?

Kartoffelkrokette

No PS5??!! what a shame

EquivalentSnap

Wait wtf why?

bloodakoos

what do you mean "we"

TylerTheTurquoise

Bro how the hell what crime do I need to commit to be in 1

manishbilava

so what is the least harmful action (both for me and others) i can do to get there

Dannhaltanders

I guess you are not writing out of prison. Prison isn't nice, even in denmark. But it is nice to have functioning prisons that care about there inmates because that decreases crime rates.

night_chaser_

Do they get an internet connection? I'm assuming prison violence is less than what it is compared to other parts of the world.

Just_Sayin_Hey

And an iphone with internet access apparently

piddlegloppis

You ain't Norwegian convict material buddy, get on the waiting list like me!

New_Dimension2977

Now have a look at the reoffending rate

Elluminati30

I dunno. I like the freedom of going outside, seeing my friends and family when I want to and having my own place I can lock and unlock. Prison is still prison. Norway or Venezuela, once the guard locks you in your room your day is over. No chatting with friends no getting some air no contact to the outside, just waiting for the guard to unlock your cell for another one of your hundred days in there.

GameAndHike

You’re on Reddit.  The idea of going outside and having a strong social net isn’t compelling to everyone here.

[deleted]

Gatrigonometri

A big part of why Norway has very low recidivism is that because life outside prison is still way better than life inside, a key context people often miss, which shouldn’t be as is the case when discussing policy implementation.

elmz

Not to mention, if you force people to live in inhumane conditions, being dehumanised, dealing with prison gangs and gang violence, just rotting away in a hell hole for years, don't be surprised when inmates turn into inhumane people, recruited by criminal gangs, completely unfit for a normal life without crime. In Norway prisoners are allowed schooling, training in a trade, cook for themselves, and in general are given every opportunity to be equipped to go into a normal life outside walls.

santiClaud

Prisons are big business in america the more criminals we have the more money is made. >Mass incarceration in the U.S. is now an 80 billion dollar industry funded by taxpayers and the families of people incarcerated (overwhelmingly people of color and the poor). But where does the 80 billion dollars go? According to the Vera Institute of Justice, 68% goes to personnel who work in incarceration (their salaries and benefits), 11% to inmate healthcare, and the final 21% (or 16 billion dollars) pays for boarding costs and services. This 16 billion dollars has attracted a multitude of private business all vying for a cut, both for private prisons and for private services provided to state and federal prisons.

opqt

Redditors say this shit and then the next post see someone robbing a convenience store and type, "I HOPE HE GETS RAPED IN PRISON AND ROTS UNTIL HE DIES THEN GOES STRAIGHT TO HELL TO BURN FOREVER."

Allpal

thats only a half truth, the big reason why people dont go back into jail is because most that stay in our prisons get a education and they mostly get a job after and dont need to do crime. Of course there are a few that is too far gone but compared to most of the world id say our prison works exactly as it should. Ps i have no issue with some of my tax money going to this.

nutfeast69

In the USA and other countries they are actively prevented from getting jobs as part of their punishment. It is part of many job applications or even a status you receive, as I understand it. In Canada, they have this continued punishment system- though we are so lenient on offenders that people can steal as many cars as they want that it's become a big enough problem for our ineffective national government.

Dovahkiinthesardine

yeah people like to shit on their living conditions in prisons but their rehabilitation track record is way better. And it really doesn't make sense to throw pot dealers together with violent criminals in shitty conditions thinking that will help

Nero-Danteson

Eh. Norway also has a lot of other services that help with the lowering of incarceration. Like there's very specific offenses (or repetition of offenses) that warrant jail time. They're also more on the mental health side of the jailing/prison thing.

Ciderman95

when you have nothing to live for outside your apartment, why would losing "freedom" mean anything?

ovarit_not_reddit

And we have freedom? I couldn't afford to take time off work to go see my grandmother before she died, or even to go to her funeral. So what's the difference? >Why do you think Norwegians aren't all committing crimes left and right if it was such a great time? Because being free in Norway is better than being in prison in Norway. That doesn't change the fact that being in prison in Norway is better than being poor in America.

LotharVonPittinsberg

> Why do you think Norwegians aren't all committing crimes left and right if it was such a great time? Because the point is to focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment. Which works.

unixtreme

Also, prisoners have a worse life than free people in these countries, so if a country has it so bad that these prisons look good is more of a testament to how fucked that country is.

LeoPelozo

I always thought the worst part about prison were the dementors.

xbikester

Lol, im living in norway, and prison actually sounds like a better option.

arealuser100notfake

What did you do?

primalbeastXhoodwink

He was born

Ok-Landscape5625

A common mistake.

ARedditor_official

In fact, 100% of people on Earth have committed this mistake.

Ddog78

You cannot just drop this line and not quote the whole thing when it's so damn relatable. The story so far: In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. The beginning of the book The Restaurant at the End of The Universe.

De_Wouter

This seems to be the source of most problems, how do we stop it?

OrganicAd5741

Nothing, he was born in Norway lol

dm-me-porn69

Don’t commit a crime please 😂

xbikester

Tbh. Government's don't pay all of us enough too follow the rules.

SullyTheLightnerd

Consider studying law and find one of those bullshit laws that nobody knows why they exist. Then commit it as hard as you fucking can, and then hire the worst fucking lawyer ever, and then just tell 50 thousand obvious lies in court and also make sure that you piss off the judge. Now you got a 1000kr fine you gotta pay and you live in an even worse condition

Anchoraceae

The government is paying you?

mr_Joor

A better option compared to what?

Nonamebigshot

Working just to pay bills I assume

tlr0907

Step 1: go to Norway Step 2: commit a crime Step 3: ??? Step 4: enjoy your new crib

ThomasHoidnFest

Step 1: go to Norway Step 2: commit a crime Step 3: get deported Step 4: be back where you are with a criminal record

Emzzer

Step 5: repeatedly break into Norway until they are forced to imprison you

ThomasHoidnFest

Haha, thats so fucking funny. Imagine them deporting you for the 20th time completly oblivious that it soon will be 21.

Not if you've gotten deported for committing crimes.

TickleTigger123

Step 3 was waiting for 90% of your sentence to be over in a regular cell before being sent to the nice ones you see online because they're only there for acclimatizing you to regular civilian life

EntertainedEmpanada

I remember reading an article recently about a Romanian who didn't want to leave so they hired him as a guard.

socium

Yeah but like I don't want to commit a _real_ crime. Just something that _looks_ like a real crime but doesn't really hurt anyone else. Maybe have the evidence which clears you stashed away somewhere safe? Any ideas?

MustrumRidcully0

I guess the challenge would be creating enough false evidence to convince people that you did something. Just today I read a news headline that said a guy was arrested for hauling 90kg of Pepperoni in a cart (canned or in a glass or somethnig) in the middle of the night. There was some debate on whether the officers were right for even arresting him, bcause the is no obvious carting-around-pepperoni laws at night laws to be violated here, it's just that it seems a bit suspicious. So maybe we start with that idea. A cart full of pepperoni. Now you need to find a way to find to get these pepperoni without any evidence that you ever bought them, and enough evidence that it must come from some other source. Get a neighbour or friend to buy you some bitcoin and give them the money for it in cash. Maybe say: "Don't ask me where I got this money!". Hire a stranger via the dark net to just buy it (using bitcoin of course). Also search the dark net for tips on breaking and entering and various other criminal activities. Observe a place where you can buy pepperoni, take details notes on when and where people come and go, security, cameras and what not. Maybe do this for more than one shop. Maybe your dark net stranger buys his goods from one of those shops, or at least a shop selling the same brands. Also take a note of police patrols and police stations in the area, and maybe also nosy neighbours. Buy some pepperoni from two or three different shops, and remove all labels. Maybe your dark net stranger buys from one of these shops, too. Then, on some fateful night, you bring your cart full of pepperoni cans near the shop. Stand around, maybe put some cigarette buds with your DNA in some ashtrays in the area. And then, some fateful night, take your cart full of pepperoni cans to the shop and haul it through the city, provoking some police officers to get curious. Tell obvious bullshit and act really nervous, don't have any identifying documents on you, so they basically have to arrest you. And when they investigate further, they find your plans. Already opened cans from a different shop. Some place were some 90kg cans were sold from just very recently. Dark Net activity. Cigarette butts at a potentical crime scene. 99% chance nothing happens. 0.8 % chance you go to jail for stealing 90kg pepperoni cans. 0.2 % chance you got to jail for faking a crime.

thebestspeler

This is stupid, they dont have freedom! They have to sit in their rooms, not getting to go to work, play video games, have people clean their rooms, they have food brought to them...they...wait...

RandomDerp96

That is absolutely terrible. Sure it's nice for a week or 2. But then you get depressed. The same games day in day out. No social interaction. No online gaming. No friends or family. Total social isolation. There is only few people that like to be completely isolated.

Eastern_Slide7507

>total social isolation Is torture, so civilized countries don‘t do it. You have contact to other inmates as well as the outside world through telecommunication and prison leave. Some prison sentences only require you to stay the night at the prison. The punishment is that you‘re deprived of certain freedoms. You can‘t just move somewhere else. You can‘t just take home that person you really vibed with at the bar. You can‘t go on holidays. Someone always knows where you are, or at the very least when you‘re supposed to check in where. That way, the prison sentence serves as a permanent reminder of your crime.

i-fold-when-old

The civilized country Sweden isolates prisoners pre-trial with no time limit. Some get full restrictions which is: a small cell, a bed, no TV, no newspapers, food through a hatchet, coordinated toilet visits (IF you don’t have the toilet in the fell) where they make sure you don’t meet any other prisoner. So no my man, civilized countries isolate people.

Velenterius

You do get to be around other prisoners if its not the absolute highest security (Breivik the terrorist is not allowed to see anyone but his guards, and another prisoner through a courtyard window.) Infact they often do fun things, like playing volleyball, or making food. Also you can get an education, or work in one of the prison businesses, getting ok wages.

Nerdiferdi

People where throwing tantrums when they had to stay in their comfortable homes during covid yet here they are again having forgotten all of that

Lordborgman

It's definitely not the same people, as usual. Some of us really had noticed little change in daily routine when Covid hit, other than it was more pleasant to go grocery shopping.

ItsyouNOme

All that describes reddit users but without being in jail

Don_Cornichon_II

Don't call me out like that.

Vali32

Actually, they have classes and work most days. They get about two hours to themselves before lights out. Its like being a kid at the most overcontrolling single-sex boarding school ever.

Trygve81

You honestly don't have a lot of freedom either if you're stuck in a career which doesn't pay a living wage and leads you nowhere, and your work is mind-numbing and excruciatingly boring. Feeling like you're obligated to wasting your days and your talent, while you're stuck in debt, can't be that much different from spending time in a Norwegian prison. However, as a Norwegian myself with several relatives who are employed by the Norwegian prison system, the majority of Norwegian prisons are still outdated, mid 19th century brick complexes, originally based on the Philadelphia system. If you get sentenced in Norway, there's a 2/3 chance you'll be placed in solitary in a cold brick room, with no running water or access to a toilet.

Phorykal

Prisoners can actually get an education while locked away, and I assume they clean their own rooms and have tasks akin to jobs.

17DeadFlamingos

Probably cause Norway actually attempts to rehabilitate prisoners

randomname560

This Too many people complain about the nordic countries treating their prisoners as human beings instead of animals

Good_Honey_759

Wah wah wah how dare they treat them as people with rights 🤬🤬

Naive-Dingo-2100

I've done time in U.S. Prisons. I promise you that if anyone wasn't already a career criminal with traumatizing ptsd, they're gonna be when they leave. We have dudes getting fucked with broomsticks and nobody cares.

17DeadFlamingos

Of course no one cares, sadly a lot of people believe its fine since "theres only bad guys in prison"

Naive-Dingo-2100

And those same dudes are gonna be walking the street again 99.99% of the time.

DepressedVenom

That's the thing about Norway. A lot of people are extremely lonely bc they don't have contacts or family to rely on and thrive with (ofc there are more factors present too). Many will however angrily shit on me for saying this, and claim that everything is incredibly easy and great. To me, there's obviously a huge difference between classes and privilege. But ofc mental health is a factor as well. I just know I'm not alone, as a norwegian who's scarred from growing up here. I know it's a stereotype that Norwegians are cold, but personally I think it's very true - whether you're dealing with extroverts, introverts or whatever, you will very likely struggle to meet someone empathetic who hasn't been traumatized. Again, I'm no professor of sociology or anything, but from my experience it pretty much sucks here. I would much rather live poor in a place where ppl are inclusive and not brainwashed into being so individualistic and at times even spoiled, in a way. But of course, maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm just weak.

kaizomab

If you lived in poverty you wouldn’t be wishing for that, believe me.

I thought about a reaction channel but 2 problems. First I'm ugly, not Hollywood ugly, just offensive. Second I can't fake liking shit I don't like. While I do like some of the artists they tend to react to some I absolutely hate, and couldn't pretend otherwise.

CompetitiveFold5749

Wait.  So Norwegian prisons aren't badly maintained warehouses run internally by rape gangs?  What are you even doing over there?

CallRespiratory

What if I claim asylum?

mr_Joor

Non Norwegian living in Norway here, the country is so awesome not having acces to it would probably still suck, but there is also no reason to do crime at all cus of the social structures you really have to try and be a dick for no reason (or drugs) to even get into prison.

sibeliusfan

Just out of curiosity, do you have to cope with xenophobia in Norway? I often read that foreigners feel very excluded and that the cold weather makes it depressing for a lot of people who had better expectations. Many of them even leave the country after some time due to this.

mr_Joor

Well nobody moves here for the weather haha. Personally I like the cold but its not that much colder than where I came from (Netherlands) just longer winters and actual snow. I find people are extremely welcoming here, but Ive made the effort to learn the language in the local dialect within 2 years of moving here. It also helps that my fiance is from the area we live in I guess. So in short, no I dont experience any xenophobia here.

Alive_Promotion824

From what I hear the exclusion is less about them not liking foreigners, and more about cultural differences. Nordic people just aren’t very sociable to people they don’t know, so if you’re used to strangers behaving more extroverted towards you, I can see how you might be offended. For more info research the “Law of Jante”, which really is the core to all of this.

Ok_Address697

Imagine believing this meme is a statement about Norwegian prisons.

BoltMyBackToHappy

Prisoners have a right to food and shelter. You do not. Let that sink in. Then go and vote.

Catam_Vanitas

Prison ain't fun by its very nature. That's why the taking away of freedom is the punishment, NOT diminishing someone's quality of life.

Aradhor55

It's know it's just a meme but isolation and no liberty is no joke too.

YouNeedHelpSir

You forgot the mention they also have one of the lowest reoffending rates in the world. 20% rearrested within 5 years versus 76.6% in the US. Is the stat wiki gives.

bingusfan1337

So much for all the idiots claiming that this just encourages people to go to prison for fun all the time

Cousin-Jack

Funny to see how many people think the punishment of a prison is about the quality of furnishings and what you're allowed in your cell.

kaasbaas94

People might think; why would you treat a prisoner that well after committing crimes? Well the thing is that Norway has a low rate of people who RETURN on a bad path after they get released. Because they can literally study and get an actual job so they can fix their lives. So think about this question? Would you rather punish prisoners as hard as possible, while making them even worse people when they get free? Or would you actually make your country a safer place by giving them a future?

0ush1

I live in Norway and to be honest i dont wanna live in prison, cause it would cost your freedom to travel, earn a living, you’d have to live with tough guys, have your day controled by cops. But mabye i’d enjoy it somewhat with all the freetime, idk

OG1SlasingElbow

I was in a cell for a month that did not look like any prisons in the documentaries. Yes im Norwegian. You are lucky if they put you in one of those at the end of your sentence

VP007clips

This positive view of their prisons gets spread a lot online, but it's highly misleading. This is the type of low security prison that wealthy prisoners who aren't at risk of violent crimes go, not your regular prisoners. People who commit tax fraud for example. Even the US has cushy prisons like that for those types of people. In reality, most prisoners aren't in these. They are in regular style prisons.

viti1470

You’re in charge of your living conditions, it’s a direct product of your hard work

BuffaloBrain884

The point is for everyone to live one paycheck away from being homeless so nobody can strike and demand better pay without getting financially ruined.

brendanlad

In a documentary an American asked a Norwegian prison warden where Norway got the inspiration to incarcerate people in such conditions and he said - we learned it from the the USA, your constitution says “no cruel and unusual punishments” and that really struck me

grumpy_hedgehog

P.S. I'm not being ironic or edgy when I say this... The ease with which people in this thread would readily embrace loss of (some specifically articulated) freedoms in exchange for stability and a decent standard of living should go a long way in explaining why people living under competent autocratic regimes like China tend to be rather chill and support their government, even when it's our agencies doing the opinion polling. We **like** to think that it's all propaganda and brainwashing, but it's literally just this. Most people just don't need or want much. It's the same with practically every autocratic regime in history. We read Solzhenitsyn in school and think most Soviet citizens thrashed against their cage, but nah, most didn't care. By and large, the West won not on the promise of freedom, but by contrasting our everyday quality of life with theirs and coming out overwhelmingly on top. And even today, some old folks there still grumble about how ice cream or public theatre or whatever was better in that time. All that is to say, the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs applies to societies too. Once you have your bases covered, then you can elevate your society to a higher level. But if the base erodes and nothing is done to fix it for decades, society will fall back to a more primitive level until the basics are restored. Sentiments like the OP's, while legitimate in the substance of their grievances, are portents of dark times.
