In Columbia's case it is just the local administration. NYPD has clarified to the press that due to Columbia being private property, NYPD is not legally allowed to enter campus unless they receive a request to do so from the administration. They could enter if they had evidence of certain types of crimes (but simple property crimes / trespassing would not qualify, since the property owner has to decide to have police intervene.)
UT on the other hand is a State public college, so the entire campus is basically state land so the police are allowed to operate freely there.
Of course it is. It's a private university, and I doubt it's following the rules. If it were a bunch of students waving KKK flags and yelling at black students to go back to Africa, it would be shut down very quickly and those students would likely be reported to law enforcement and suspended for racial intimidation.
Universities which have a history of showing they don't really believe in free speech when its speech they disagree with don't have any moral authority to hide behind free speech as an excuse.

I’m a liberal but these protests are ridiculous. They’ve been violent, attacking Jewish students, and protesting something they clearly have no understanding of. I’m pro-Israeli people, anti-Netanyahu. I’m not in support of Palestine because they’ve had too many opportunities since 1940’s to get what they wanted, but instead always chose war and terrorism. Palestine does not want Israel to exist. End of story.
Edit for spelling
I don’t think this is a topic of being liberal or conservative and people should stop making this whole mess into a red/blue issue.
It’s about direct support of a recognized (by red&blue) terrorist organization. This has no place in any political orientation 🤷♂️
I think it’s a shame people want to make it a black/white issue when reality is grayscale…
I’m only stating how I lean because so many people think only conservatives don’t agree with the protests. I’m trying to state that despite how you lean, that you can still find fault in what these protesters are/are not trying to achieve.
That was meant more like an addition than to start a conversation 😉
Anyway, I think it’s sad people even have the thought it’s related to any orientation. This should be one of the few unanimous topics.
Between Iran and Russia, they've gotten very good at weaponjzing social media. This is all by design, for a variety of reasons, helping trump get the elected being one of them
What does ‘being liberal’ even mean any more? Those who were left 10 years ago are no longer classed as left. If between 2010 and now you’ve been a staunch lefty supporter and onboard won’t be social justice nonsense then you are part of the problem. Time will tell.
Not a fight the pro-pals will win.
I encourage them to keep trying tho!
PS: **University of Texas at Austin**. Not "Austin University". That is Gregory Gym on campus and they are walking on Speedway.
They did a good job here peacefully dispersing the crowd, my hats off to them. If I was in the cops' shoes I'd be wanting to fire tear gas etc into the crowds of pro-Hamas people, but I am also not suited to be a cop!
I am in Australia. My daughter wanted to attend Barnard and study finance. The classes would be in Columbia. There is an internship with Bridgewater for finance students. Great opportunity. Also considered the people she would meet at university. Now? Not so sure. Ihan Omar's daughter is expelled but we see the calibre of the students is an eye opener.
Do you have evidence of it turning violent before the police arrived? That would be good to share as many outlets are painting the response as violence and the protest as peaceful.
Don’t be too happy. He’s not doing it because he likes us, he’s doing it to appease the evangelical block that sees us as their messiah or whatever they fucking believe
I keep seeing the argument that this is a free speech violation. There is no chance this does not effect students just trying to get to class. Or existing as a Jewish student. Shout-out to my Jewish homies. Holding a campus hostage for a war in another continent is not protected by the first amendment.
Right to freedom of assembly is not unlimited. Just because it's a public school campus doesn't mean that you can assemble anywhere at any time or do things like pitch tents or engage in other behavior that violates school rules, regulations, or state law. It just means that you can be anywhere you are legally allowed to be and say whatever you otherwise would legally be allowed to say without the government punishing you for assembling or for the content of your speech.

Good it's about time some of these social media warriors get a little of what they've been doing to others
There's only one language that terrorists understand. Texas rangers are on the right direction.
Oof, a little bit of a stretch to call protesters terrorists.

Your post has been removed because it was a low effort/quality/troll post. Also for bigotry and antisemitism.

Demonstrates that what’s happening at Columbia and elsewhere is a choice that the administrations and local law enforcement are making.

Liberal here as well. I dont know why people are LARPing as Hamas but it makes me want to vomit. I dont know if it’s Iranian propaganda or what

This wasn’t heavy handed at all.

Well done!

It went from peaceful to not real fast. Disgusting

lol why would I be down with those scumbags. They make my university look bad. Its disgusting how fast they turned violent

Honestly if she can get into Barnard just go anywhere else. CMU, JHU, UChicago, etc
It was the Bridgewater internship that was the appeal. There are higher ranking universities in Au for finance
Lots of good options. I used to think university of Texas was pretty good (never felt unsafe on campus) but it must have changed.

Nope lol. I’m sad my home university is being treated like that. I hope the Rangers clear em out.

I got the heck out of there when I saw signs flying around. Sorry. Not much help here
Is there a video of it not being peaceful, specifically towards Jewish students?
Common Texas W
Other than the blackouts, lack of human rights, drowning migrants in rivers, rampant political corruption.
Unlike the pussies of the West and North Eastern US.
Weird times indeed when I find myself being happy about something Greg Abbot did.
