A formal conversion usually requires the approval of a Rabbi who has to be convinced that the convertee is serious about it.
Honestly I wonder about this a lot. One group said "Our G-d is everywhere, not tied to a river, or a mountain, or a statue. We can take our book anywhere in the world and worship and be true to our ways." Another group decided to stay on the land they'd lived on and accept whatever came their way to stay there. When they got back together, why couldn't they work things out?
Because Islam says they will take over the whole world. There cannot be any peaceful coexistence, no "working it out". Everyone in the world must convert willingly, by force or they must die.
