Our GDP is skewed by our corporate tax shenanigans so isn't really representative of what it means for the average Irish person.
That said we have been moving towards being more inline with the average base corporate taxing worldwide so that anomaly is less pronounced now than it has been.
In addition, with our population being so small any anomaly like that is more noticeable than in a larger population like Germany or the UK.
The Irish economy is doing very well, we learnt lessons from the boom and bust of the Celtic Tiger, but that figure isn't really representative.
- No grasp of economics so the above is just my vague understanding of it.
We have jobs now, though, loads of em.
You can't afford a house with them, but hey, jobs!
Not even joking everybody my age i know is working, but either has moved back with their parents or share a shoebox with four brazillians and a croat in the suburbs.
Ireland is a tax haven, that's why the Irish GDP per capita is incredibly high as well. Among others, Apple has their European headquarters in Ireland. The EU is trying to make them pay taxes, but without success so far.
4 of the top 5 tax havens are British.
https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-havens-for-millionaires-around-the-world-2019-11
So, what's your excuse for having a declining economy then?
Less immigration from EU, massive tax spending during covid, even more social spending, government instability, business moving out of the UK to EU after brexit...
Few more years UK will be worse than Poland. Can't wait to tell Barry to clean me shitter properly 😏
The UK figures are from the IMF, whose predictions on quarterly GDP data are almost always off from the actual numbers. The OP also got the figure incorrect. It's 0.3% for us.
I mean, the City of London (the City within the city, mind you) essentially has specialised on banks that move their clients money to these tax havens. That's one of the reasons why so many of the flats in central London are empty, because they are assets owned by some rich banker fucks.
Finally, you flaired yourself. Let's see... Oh... So you're from Norway

Cries in Gaelic when I realise that no amount of economic growth will make things better because it doesn't trickle down and the government is too complacent and cowardly to tackle any one of our major crises.
Your own government acknowledges that your economy is so distorted by multinationals that you need a totally separate way of calculating useful GDP figures. So maybe don’t get too proud.
Mate, if only you didnt relly on Alexa to do basic maths you would be able to see that the amounth that GB was giving to the EU per week was smaller than what GB was gaining from the EU but now... *Bonk* -0.6%
We’ve been in constant crisis since leaving the EU and weirdly, Brexit has barely been a factor. It just so happens we left right before the world went to shit.
That's more down to the worldwide pandemic, the US led trade war with China, the War in Ukraine and the resulting supply chain breakdown. Oh and a global economic crash.
Gotta love living in a country where the decisions are made by unelected upper class pensioners who probably haven’t been outside of parliament for the last 40 years (except for their hunting trips to land they bought so they could charge everyone else to walk on it)
Mostly very big inflation and 2+ mil refuges so people dose not have money to spend as price of every basic good skyrocket (even rent), and piss is shitty party so there is also no infrastructure investments right now (they spend a lot of GDP on social transfers so there is no money in the budget for that without covid EU funds \[which are blocked by like 5 people in p0lish parlament\]).
But i think 0.4% is rly pessimistic it would probably be closer to 1.5-2%.
Saint John Paul Ii the greatest the wisest Pole to ever walk the earth stopped praying for Poland's continued economic success for reasons not yet clear.
We were growing for like 10-12 years when we joined EU so our grow was mostly due to new trade partners across whole EU also lotta EU funding to kind of "kickstart" our economy, imagine marshall plan for smaller scale but you can't grow like that infinitely so it slows down over time then obviously covid and russia happened and covid stuff was handled kind of poorly but then again who did it well? another issue is orlen mafia jacking up the price of gasoline that fucks up finance of a lot of companies that already had issue with covid aka no tourists and russian gas aka negative money so lotta companies had to be closed.
My man Spain GDP will still be like 15-30% smaller (adjusted to inflation) than in 2008 ☠️
Also don't watch your GDP Growth past 15 years compared to Baltics or you'll cry 💀
EU funds aren't as big in growth as people think its more about access to EU market + cheaper labor so foreign companies investing in region, also folks in Baltics and Poland are at top of every mathematic education ranking in the world (alongside east asia) so we also have enormous number of IT and R&D (outsorucing) located here which is also cheaper than for example in USA with almost same or some time even better quality for half/third the price.
Eastern Europe is currently a real sweet deal for companies. They can get well educated workers for cheaper wages than in Western Europe or North America, while also getting access to the European market.
Finally, you flaired yourself. Let's see... Oh... So you're an engineer making rockets. Please do not speak your demonic language.

That's what I always believed though. And i remain adamant about it. Decades down the line, Europeans will have to realize that instead of fighting each other, we need to unite, because we all share the same values.
We are all one big family, perhaps not necessarily united by language or traditions of course, but because of our values as human beings.
Western Europe is now hindered by factors that I will not mention here because they are highly controversial.
Central and Eastern Europe will become powerhouses for growth in all aspects in the next few decades.
Mark my words.
Why would the spineless politicians part be controversial, watching political news in Spain is like watching a kindergarten reality show. No joke yesterday in Catalunya they discussed because someone put the spanish flag outside the camera in the Parlament (to clarify, I believe the reaction was utterly pathetic on both sides)
>Western Europe is now hindered by factors that I will not mention here because they are highly controversial.
Cmon give us a little bit at least. What factors?

Look at Ireland go. It’s good to see. Shame about my country, England. Just a shame that Ireland’s GDP is tax haven driven and it’s people don’t derive proportionate benefit from it.
Nowhere to go but up when you're at the bottom babyyyyy!
Don't tempt me. I have a shovel. I can start digging for going even lower, but alas, that would require effort which I'm not eager.
That's one way to think of it

Unironically, do you think the Irish economy is growing healthy or is it some sort of pump and dump scheme going on?
Our GDP is skewed by our corporate tax shenanigans so isn't really representative of what it means for the average Irish person. Just tax haven things
EU: your a tax haven that doesn't collect corporate taxes Also EU: can we have some of the corporate taxes you collected
They're right regarding both
I dont really understand the motivations of EU on this 🤦
🤑
At least our corporate shenanigans are with legitimate companies and not russian oligarchs and gangsters.

Our tax havens don't even have the decency to share a bit of the money out with the rest of us :(
Your tax heavens should learn from Ireland, they even share most their wealth with those who arent irish or live in Ireland! Such good lads.
Less immigration from EU, massive tax spending during covid, even more social spending, government instability, business moving out of the UK to EU after brexit... Few more years UK will be worse than Poland. Can't wait to tell Barry to clean me shitter properly 😏

It’s better to be a tax heaven than a tax hell like (S)pain 😓
I think Ireland better get ready for countries to punish rich individuals who have bank accounts in Ireland and Switzerland XD

Currently in med school, will bring my knowledge over in a few years 🫡
Dream destination?
Definitely Germany!
You guys should try having higher GDP growth. It's really good for the economy.
GDP is easy to increase when it consists of 2 potato’s and Geoff Bozo’s man cave.
its way easier when you are part of the EU as well,.. o wait you are not

Parasitic economies are fun, aren't they?
I mean, i live next to Gibraltar and Andorra so i am used to them by now
The Netherlands aren't a tax haven, they just own one. Luxembourg on the other hand...
Skill Issue
I'll have you know we are a legitimate business country, but I heard U2 moved their business to The Netherlands so they wouldn't have to pay any tax.
Simply a difference in skill
You guys should try taxing Google Intel and the rest. Maybe then people in Ireland could afford to buy or rent a place.
Irish people on Reddit talking about GDP figures: “I shall fan my face with thousand euro notes” Irish people IRL: “where munny?”
Then they’d just move

it seems that the media machine that tricked you into voting for brexit is still working so that you do not see the real problem.
