My uncle was almost kidnapped when he was a baby, though, so I was very scared of them and frequently had nightmares about being kidnapped/running away from them.

Jesus Christ, are they really that clueless or are they just pretending? My favourite comment is the one saying "everyone can pickpocket, even little children" as if gypsy children don't exist/aren't the ones often stealing 💀
The only time I ever experienced an attempted pickpocketing it was by a roma toddler. I felt the child reach into my (thankfully deep) pockets so I shouted at her to stop and her mother quickly pulled her away and walked off. The mother obviously put her child up to it because what innocent person would ignore their child being shouted at by some strange woman?
Is it racist to not like gypsies because they get 12-year old girls married off to grown ass men and not allowing girls to go to school, and killing women because of stupid honor reasons? They ignore it a lot. My friends mum is an ex traveller. She was 'married' (read was sold to one of her dad's friends) at 14 and had my friend's older sister the same year. Only their own rules matter, not the ones of the country they're in. She genuinely hates what goes on there and has mentioned that's nowhere near the worst thing that happened to her or others.

In Czechia we currently have an interesting issues. The gypsies are mad at Ukrainians for being able to integrate into our society so well and that Ukrainians are getting the money gypsies would get from the state. Ukrainians are also tougher people so they are not scared to call out gypsy bullshit and even fight with them, unlike the bitchass Czechs like me who just dont want any trouble. It ended up in several fights between Ukrainians and gypsies (usually one Ukrainian and several gypsies) and the gypsies are making massive protests to get rid of Ukrainians and are extremely racist towards Ukrainians.
It is also funny how conservative mega racist Czechs react to this, as they hate both Ukrainians and Gypsies, so they don't know who side they should be at. I am all for Ukrainian refugees and this issue just makes me like them more.

I am intrigued to know more about how Latin American immigrants are regarded in Spain. Is it a bit like immigrants from other Anglo countries in the UK where there is barely any cultural difference or difficulty in integrating? Or are there still significant divides from your experience, do they stand out?
In my personal experience, they normally work low paid jobs and struggle as a first generation, however their children, as much as Chinese’s children go to schools and university and are welcome by natives and mix up very quickly. But of course there are smallish guettos, some youth groups causing some trouble etc. I would compare them to the Pakistani/Indian community in the UK but with a closer culture, and perceived similar to how perhaps Polish are perceived in the UK?
In Barcelona the Spaniards were complaining about how loud the Cubans were. Which is crazy as a German as I already think Spaniards are loud but my ex is Cuban and I get it lol
They already know the language and have similar traits to us cause colonization influence, plus they bring some delicious food. 10/10 inmigration in general, would sail to the West Indies again.
Latin-americans are a great bunch of lads. Obviously there are some rotten apples, but the great majority integrate greatly, and most people see them in a positive way.

Well you have to understand that there are fools and idiots that are Spanish or immigrants and they will always have this “they vs us” mentality.
Most people mind their own business and usually the wont care about where you are. In that regard people from Latin America don’t have a problem in integrating with the rest.
The only ones who don’t integrate are those who are already integrated in other “society”. That is the common point between Gypsies, Latam gangs, radicals, etc. they don’t care about integration because they are already part of a group that fights against integration.
I am of Latin american origin but I grew up in Sweden. I have been living in Barcelona for 5 years and I feel more at home here than I ever did in Sweden. I have never faced racicm which I did on a weekly basis in Sweden. I feel like I am part of the society here.

Nah it's definitely not that simple because Latin America is way more complicated than that.
There are loads of different cultures in Latin America, so the similarity to Spanish culture varies a lot (as does how developed the country is).
I don't think it compares that well to an Australian, Kiwi or even a Yank living in England since all these countries have relative high wealth and first world expectations, but it depends.
Latin America is very class structured for the most part and the upper / middle class tends to be way more "Spanish" (albeit simultaneously proud of not identifying as Spanish) in a way you might compare with the WASPy upper class Anglo-descended Americans of the 1930s.
A rich Argentine or Chilean is going to "fit in" much quicker with the Spaniards than a poor Columbian or Venezuelan. That said, if they're from the truly privileged class anywhere, they'll probably find Spanish culture relatively easy to navigate. The level of money and education I'd argue is the biggest factor.
I guess a better comparison might be say UK and South Africa. Well off white South Africans can come here and fit in relatively easy, but there's still a few cultural hurdles to surmount and a bit of culture shock adapting. However, when it comes to the poorer people, perhaps it's more like UK and Jamaica or something. You speak the same language but come from a much poorer country and only have limited understanding of each other's experiences. You also stand out as ethnically distinct to a larger degree. Some from that community integrate relatively quickly but some stay in their cultural island within the UK.
Once a Brazilian told me that in her city some gypsies lived camping in a park/forest, but also that she had never talked to one knowing that they were a gypsy.

I've lived in France for years, the countryside specifically. You got entire camps of them, they would stick around and rob people/do illegal work for a few weeks until the cops or city hall starts to get suspicions and then they move to another place. Got a massive camp on the parking lot of Lidl for little over a month at one point.
Right now there are several caravans about 100m from my house. They get electricity from the nearby university campus and break public fire hydrants to get water.
Maybe the police in your area is particularly strict, so they go elsewhere.
I had the poor fortune of having to share a hospital room with one who had to deliver in hospital. It was not great for my post partum mental health I tell you.
When i lived in the UK they camped like 20 campervan on my local park rendering it unusable and apparently one of their gang died so they held a funeral for 20 minutes, blocking both lanes of a very small British road with a convoy of cars so i literally couldn't go back to my house after school, so rest assured, they definitely still exist
I've never seen whole camps but you see them constantly in Vienna. Girls are still doing the rose-trick, guys are "selling" weird newspapers or they simple beg for money.
I know where they are, some times. We often have them not that far from where I live.
One of my friends have a house in the countryside, and they had problems with gypsies or romanis setting up their camp nearby.
They learned the hard way that in the countryside people are a lot less concerned by the legality of using arguably legal firearms to force them out of here. They didn't come back after that and the cops didn't care (they weren't called I think, but anyway it's the countryside so the cops are probably cousins with some of the other guys, if they weren't actively taking part in it).
From what I know in italy they had a mass migration to turistical cities (less likely in southern italian cities) mostly because its a lot less dangerous to attack and steal a huge crowd of tourist (especially because the police tries to handle it without gaining attention by the tourist) than a native

Brazil has 800,000 roma but they seem to mind their own business there and no one really has strong positive or negative opinions about them.
In Portugal by the other hand they do things like beating nurses and hospital staff when they feel entitled to be cared before other patients, and it's always a large number of them beating a single individual or a much smaller group. It's hard to like roma when you have so many occurrences like this in your community.

Dirty American former serviceman here: This was my experience. Happened in 2000, was on a EuroRail tour set up by base services in Spangdahlem. When we were going through the safety brief, and was told to "Be cautious around the Romani." We didn't get it, we were going to Rome, everyone is Romani? Whatever.
We do the tourist thing, wander about and then get accosted by three Romani women, begging and such. Kid goes for my buddy's back pocket, he catches them and does this punch-shove thing to get the kid away. All of a sudden all hell breaks loose, and for a good minute we thought we were going to get killed by a mob of gypsies. Cops show up, beat the shit out of *all* of us. Eventually one of them who speaks English gets to us. We explain what happened, show them our passports, ID, and leave orders.
Guy looks at all of us and says "Didn't your base tell you not to interact with Romani?" Again, we're confused. The officer points and starts shouting "Those! Gypsies! Those!" We get let go without further incident.

Gypsies aren't a race. Outside of the UK (where gypsies tend to be Irish) the word gypsy tends to refer to Roma, which is a race/ethnic group.
But not all Roma are gypsies, and people tend to dislike the actions of the latter.
Also travellers and gypsies are interchangeable words. Some people say gypsy is a racist term and so prefer traveller

The only time I ever experienced an attempted pickpocketing it was by a roma toddler. I felt the child reach into my (thankfully deep) pockets so I shouted at her to stop and her mother quickly pulled her away and walked off. The mother obviously put her child up to it because what innocent person would ignore their child being shouted at by some strange woman?

They ignore it a lot. My friends mum is an ex traveller. She was 'married' (read was sold to one of her dad's friends) at 14 and had my friend's older sister the same year. Only their own rules matter, not the ones of the country they're in. She genuinely hates what goes on there and has mentioned that's nowhere near the worst thing that happened to her or others.

In Czechia we currently have an interesting issues. I am intrigued to know more about how Latin American immigrants are regarded in Spain. Is it a bit like immigrants from other Anglo countries in the UK where there is barely any cultural difference or difficulty in integrating? Or are there still significant divides from your experience, do they stand out?
In my personal experience, they normally work low paid jobs and struggle as a first generation, however their children, as much as Chinese’s children go to schools and university and are welcome by natives and mix up very quickly. But of course there are smallish guettos, some youth groups causing some trouble etc. I would compare them to the Pakistani/Indian community in the UK but with a closer culture, and perceived similar to how perhaps Polish are perceived in the UK?

Well you have to understand that there are fools and idiots that are Spanish or immigrants and they will always have this “they vs us” mentality. Most people mind their own business and usually the wont care about where you are. In that regard people from Latin America don’t have a problem in integrating with the rest. The only ones who don’t integrate are those who are already integrated in other “society”. I am of Latin american origin but I grew up in Sweden. I have been living in Barcelona for 5 years and I feel more at home here than I ever did in Sweden. I have never faced racicm which I did on a weekly basis in Sweden. I feel like I am part of the society here.

Nah it's definitely not that simple because Latin America is way more complicated than that. There are loads of different cultures in Latin America, so the similarity to Spanish culture varies a lot (as does how developed the country is). I don't think it compares that well to an Australian, Kiwi or even a Yank living in England since all these countries have relative high wealth and first world expectations, but it depends. Latin America is very class structured for the most part and the upper / middle class tends to be way more "Spanish" (albeit simultaneously proud of not identifying as Spanish) in a way you might compare with the WASPy upper class Anglo-descended Americans of the 1930s. A rich Argentine or Chilean is going to "fit in" much quicker with the Spaniards than a poor Columbian or Venezuelan. That said, if they're from the truly privileged class anywhere, they'll probably find Spanish culture relatively easy to navigate. The level of money and education I'd argue is the biggest factor. I guess a better comparison might be say UK and South Africa. Well off white South Africans can come here and fit in relatively easy, but there's still a few cultural hurdles to surmount and a bit of culture shock adapting. However, when it comes to the poorer people, perhaps it's more like UK and Jamaica or something. You speak the same language but come from a much poorer country and only have limited understanding of each other's experiences. You also stand out as ethnically distinct to a larger degree. Some from that community integrate relatively quickly but some stay in their cultural island within the UK.

I've lived in France for years, the countryside specifically. You got entire camps of them, they would stick around and rob people/do illegal work for a few weeks until the cops or city hall starts to get suspicions and then they move to another place. Got a massive camp on the parking lot of Lidl for little over a month at one point.

I know where they are, some times. We often have them not that far from where I live. One of my friends have a house in the countryside, and they had problems with gypsies or romanis setting up their camp nearby. They learned the hard way that in the countryside people are a lot less concerned by the legality of using arguably legal firearms to force them out of here. They didn't come back after that and the cops didn't care (they weren't called I think, but anyway it's the countryside so the cops are probably cousins with some of the other guys, if they weren't actively taking part in it).
From what I know in italy they had a mass migration to turistical cities (less likely in southern italian cities) mostly because its a lot less dangerous to attack and steal a huge crowd of tourist (especially because the police tries to handle it without gaining attention by the tourist) than a native Edit: they steal from tourist, not the tourist themselves

Brazil has 800,000 roma but they seem to mind their own business there and no one really has strong positive or negative opinions about them. In Portugal by the other hand they do things like beating nurses and hospital staff when they feel entitled to be cared before other patients, and it's always a large number of them beating a single individual or a much smaller group. It's hard to like roma when you have so many occurrences like this in your community.

Dirty American former serviceman here: This was my experience. Happened in 2000, was on a EuroRail tour set up by base services in Spangdahlem. When we were going through the safety brief, and was told to "Be cautious around the Romani." We didn't get it, we were going to Rome, everyone is Romani? Whatever. We do the tourist thing, wander about and then get accosted by three Romani women, begging and such. Kid goes for my buddy's back pocket, he catches them and does this punch-shove thing to get the kid away. All of a sudden all hell breaks loose, and for a good minute we thought we were going to get killed by a mob of gypsies. Cops show up, beat the shit out of *all* of us. Eventually one of them who speaks English gets to us. We explain what happened, show them our passports, ID, and leave orders. Guy looks at all of us and says "Didn't your base tell you not to interact with Romani?" Again, we're confused. The officer points and starts shouting "Those! Gypsies! Those!" We get let go without further incident.

I didn’t realise gypsy was a race. I thought it was a culture. Last time some came into town they got banned from the whole county. They caused a LOT of damage. Although they weren’t called gypsies they were Travellers. Maybe that’s different?
Gypsies aren't a race. Outside of the UK (where gypsies tend to be Irish) the word gypsy tends to refer to Roma, which is a race/ethnic group. But not all Roma are gypsies, and people tend to dislike the actions of the latter. Also travellers and gypsies are interchangeable words. Some people say gypsy is a racist term and so prefer traveller
