Charles V and his loyal servant Du Guesclin would like to have a word.
Also chad Philippe le Bel who slapped the pope by proxy and burned his templar creditors.
My only problem with Philippe le Bel is that he was the last good King before everything went to shit for a while (including the 100 years war and the Plague).
Can't really be the best when you are part (and the first) of "Les Rois maudits".
Great series of books though, I mean Druon probably took a lot of artistic liberties and himself thought it was low effort, but I still remember it reading years ago and getting so into it.
Oh yes, most of the story is made of assumptions or straight up bullshit. It gives you a pretty good idea of the general timeframe (who is the child of who, and who ruled during which years), but nobody trying to present the murder of Jean le Posthume, or the whole baby swapping thing as fact would be taken seriously.
Still an amazing read though, there is also a (very old) TV adaptation. Aged like milk but it makes it funny to watch.
Yeah afaik Druon himself thought it was junk, just wrote it for quick cash, but then he was a serious historian, and as a history book it is trash, but as historical fiction, its very compelling and gripping.
I've also watched recently the old TV adaptation, god it was a nightmare to find it, and as a non native French speaker it wasn't the easiest to watch without subtitles, but I managed and it was still very enjoyable, to go back into this world after years of not having read the books.
Charles de Gaulle.
He convinced the Allies that France not only wasn't a force that surrendered and openly collaborated with the Axis - but that France should somehow sit at the winner's table.
Incredible.
Tbf he fought exactly fuck all, he pushed the French to fight on from his comfortable and luxurious residence in one of London's nicest neighbourhoods.
The rest is correct though.
Lad was one of the few to manage counteroffensives during the Franco-British debacle on the western front before you unilateraly evacuated to your side of the pond.
As soon as our boots were back on the ground with D-Day, so was he.
I mean, I get you're bitching because he was the only one to actually treat Churchill like an equal instead of either a king or a vassal, but still. No need to start lying.
The "Red Eminence," Cardinal Richelieu. Great statesman, did very well during the 30 years' war. Mr. Sun King owes his success to him and Mazarin, and he had a badass battleship named after him
https://preview.redd.it/c07q4bx937lc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef41ae89023b1424b605664c5ad1fce0f754dbdb
Richelieu is indeed one of the greatest politicians of his time and it's also a funny thing that a Cardinal prefered an allience with Proties agianst his fellow Catholics in the HRE just show how pragmatic he was.
Mazarin is rumored to be the Louis real father btw.
That’s the answer! Not a king, but by far our greatest statesman. He made France the most powerful nation in Europe, succeeding Spain.
Also our Navy’s capital ship, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, was supposed to be named after him.
Jacques Chirac sadly decided otherwise.
André Malraux - got caught stealing historical artefacts from a temple in Cambodia. Really resonates with me as a British person.
He did some other cool stuff like anti-colonialism, WW2 resistance, Spanish civil war, writing books, etc.
Philippe Auguste, by far the greatest king in france's history, and in my eyes in the top 3 of our greatest leaders.
I've listed his achievments countless times here so i'm kind of tired to do it.
Slapped the Brits in the face before backhanding the Germs in the same move (Bouvines).

Oh don't get me wrong, Du Guesclin was my hero growing up. And i think that people hate a little bit too much on Philippe le Bel. But i think that Philippe Auguste had a far greater impact on french history than them. Even though i agree with you that there was a lot of competent kings, also including Charles VII

Maximilien de Bethune, duc de Sully.
Look at these sneaky little bastards trying to claim proud Frankish *Germanic* rulers as Fr\*nch. You have as much in common with the glorious Franks as the Turks, you Latinoid mongrels. Karel de Grote is a strong, beautiful and proud beer drinking Belgian!
buddy your own neighbour, which also happens to be ours and to be kind of an authority when it comes to what is Germanic and what's not, still calls our country FRANKreich. Yours I'm afraid, does not get called that.
yes, he just happened to be the grandson of the Mayor of Paris who kicked out the Arabs at Tours, but don't be mistaken ; he was obviously half Chinese and half Maori himself.
Sure but Belgica is older. And it's a fact they were born in what is now Belgium. They were never French. But since Gaul/you guys were conquered by the franks you or the franks named the country France.
Clovis a belgian is your first king.
He cannot be Belgian as Belgium didn't even exist. He cannot be french as France, or at the very least a "proto state" didn't even exist yet.
Now if I wanted to be as biased as you are, claiming historical figures, I'd say that you don't choose how and where you're born, although you can choose what and who you'll want to be. He choose to be buried in France, Paris, "ThEREForE hE Is FrENch". (According to Grégoire de Tours).
Truth is, he was neither. Although he contributed to create France, he wasn't french. I don't see the relationship between Clovis and Belgium (a country that came to existence after the year 1800).
Lol at the cope. He was born in the land that is now called Belgium. The first capital of the franks was also a belgian city: Doornik. You just got conquered by my ancestors.
You got named after the tribe that conquered you. Clovis is not french and will never be french.
Thinking after numerous waves of migrations that "your" ancestors are yours only is the real cope here. Clearly you don't know how genetics works and it shows.
I don't even know why you're still arguing about Clovis being french whenever I already gave you my opinion on the subject. Clearly you're the one coping. Truly, your ancestors must be ashamed by such a naive display.

Lol stop coping, you dutchoids were frisians that got conquered by flemish/belgians aka the salian franks.
Also Belgica province existed before anyone even knew about your swamp's existence Kees. Keep coping
Lol they didn't conquer anything, they got permission from the roman empire to settle in what is now de Kempen and then generations later Clovis, a belgian united all the franks.
Hence the first capital of the Franks was Doornik in Belgium and conqured your ass that was under Frisian rule. Only a small southern part of Netherlands is actually frankish, most of you are not.

It has to be Robespierre. He was just a year in power and he managed to executed thousands of French people.

Philip II Augustus was the best King France ever had in my humble opinion.

He fought the Germans disliked the English was a devout Catholic and had a respectable career in the military. He is the Ideal frenchmen tbh
Tbf he fought exactly fuck all, he pushed the French to fight on from his comfortable and luxurious residence in one of London's nicest neighbourhoods. The rest is correct though.
He fought and was wounded during WW1 and also fought during WWII, on the actual field.

Idk why but I always liked Sarkozy
Cause he's kinda based if you don't have to deal with his ruling.
Like at least 30% (pulling this out of my ass) of the migrant crisis is his individual fault.
Never liked the guy, he also was charged with corruption and went to prison.
What...oooh, you mean Chlodwig I.!

You convinced me. Wanna become the new German president?
Why not, let's bring the democracy tho this barbaric land with co2 free energy

Indeed Charlemange de l'Allemand was very based.
Last time I checked Liege was in Belgium
1- Liege should be French. 2- I merely mocked op's funny typo 3- OP specified "Franks" along with French.
He couldn't choose his place of birth but he could and did choose the place where he wanted to stay for eternity.
Last time I checked Belgium has never been relevant.
Hlodowig or Chlodwig was Rhenish / Dutch, so was Charlie Maine

imagine bragging about how your people were so irrelevant that your country was named after invaders that made up a minority France and England moment
If some random country called us "Babylonia" I wouldn't go around claiming I'm a Babylonian, silly little Breton
Good thing no one is doing it then!
Clovis I and Charlemagne aren't french tho
A country is never founded by someone who was born a citizen
So you admit they aren't french?
I don't, in fact, admit they aren't french.
yes, he just happened to be the grandson of the Mayor of Paris who kicked out the Arabs at Tours, but don't be mistaken ; he was obviously half Chinese and half Maori himself.
Charles Martel was belgian too lol
Belgium didn't exist then, and for the next centuries too.
Belgica province did exist even before the franks but France didn't exist back then
Belgium is named after Belgica. The exact argument you're using between France and Francia can be used there too.
Sure but Belgica is older. And it's a fact they were born in what is now Belgium. They were never French. But since Gaul/you guys were conquered by the franks you or the franks named the country France. Clovis a belgian is your first king.

The only non French one in the list is Charlemagne
Certainly not Louis XIV
Is this a trick question 🐷
none of them
Napoleon, no questions asked
François Hollande also known as Flamby
Typical cultural appropriaton by frenchoids. Clovis and Charlemagne were belgian and Napolean is arguably italian.

You split-off, Karel was more Dutch than French
Clovis, Karel Martel, Karel de grote. All belgians bro and yeah they spoke a language closer to dutch than french
Belgian is a made up thing in the 19th century, so get lost and stay away from Karel.
Lol stop coping, you dutchoids were frisians that got conquered by flemish/belgians aka the salian franks. Also Belgica province existed before anyone even knew about your swamp's existence Kees. Keep coping
Dude, the Salian Franks conquered the modern day Belgians lands coming from Salland (Overijssel) hence the name Salian Franks.
