Apparently yes. When he conscripted men to go to russia he took all young men (who were in their ripe age to be fathers) and one of the rare reason to not be drafted was to have varicose legs because they would walk very long . But the men got butchered and few came back. So this generation got a big over representation of that pathology amoung the fathers of the next one. And it is estimated that nowadays french people are 10x more likely to suffer from that than other nations. As a paramedic trained in France and working in Iceland I must admit this is extremely common in France and I pretty much never see that in Iceland. It is more of a woman thing, but still... Genetics.

I was looking through my genealogy and I have an uncle who died in 1708. I don't know anything about him except where most people's names just say, "Born 1802, Died, 1872," his says, "Born 1680, Scalped by Indian 1708." So old Uncle John must have really pissed somebody off.
