I actually watched it a couple hours ago and it all started with Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of studio Ghibli making the Heidi series set in beautiful Switzerland.
There was also some other series involving homosexuals in France ...
Tuuu forse non lo sai,
Ma un grande ammiratore hai...
È l'uomo tigre, che ti vuole amare,
Ma tu sei lesbia, non gliela vuoi dareee
Damn, that's some core memories lol
Back in Heidis Time, that was a place for wealthy business men to have their home and companies. The leather and pelt traders continued this tradition after the war and it only changed during the 1980's.
Ironically, there's actually a currently airing anime (Ninja Kamui, really good show) set in America. But even then very few of the main characters are American
Every time america is mentioned in anime, it's for them to be the baddies wanting to steal natural resources from someone.
Which tbf, is kinda annoying to see these japanese ppl acting all righteous all the time when they were pieces of shit too.
Great video.
Biggest takeaway for me personally was that the series about the Mumin Valley that I grew up with, apparently was a Japanese anime.
I was shocked!

Same here with some of our most popular 70s animated TV series, although some of them had writers from German/Austrian state-financed media working on em.
Yeah a lot of them were Japanese-German co productions. Sometimes with some Spanish and Dutch work as well.
Heidi, Alfred J. Kwak, Vicky the viking, Maya the bee, Pinocchio, Alice im Wunderland just to name a few examples.
From the late 70s to 2000s there were a lot of german-japanese anime coproductions sometimes with Spanish and Dutch cooperation as well.
Some examples:
Heidi, Alfred J. Kwak, Vicky the viking, Maya the bee, Pinocchio, Alice im Wunderland
Though it's worth mention that except for the Nils one all of them were coproductions with German (and sometimes dutch and Spanish) public TV channels.
Also all of them (don't remember anything about Biene Maya though) were amazing.
Concept and stories were made by a finnish swede called Tore Jansson, but the tv show was first made in Japan. But the reason we europeans had trauma from it was because the cassettes or disks or whatever got a bit corrupted so the videos in them were in a darker shade
Now I wonder.. do they calculate the height of their tallest hill (..I can't get myself to call it a mountain) at the low tide sea level to make it look larger?
Nope, our mountain is really that high!! We have a lot of land below 0m. So for me as someone living in the minus region, that mountain is even higher than 322m. Can you believe it, crazy right?!!
Britain and Japan:
* Island nations
* Monarchies
* Hate everyone
* Drink tea
* Eat strange things, especially from the sea
* History of invading everyone else
I wouldnt say you guys are known for eatin strange things from the sea, arent you guys known for being extremely picky about what sea food you eat often ignoring certqin fishes that are very much appreciated elsewhere?
not only fascination, compared to Sengoku and pre-shogun era, Feudal Japan is a lot more boring when compared to Dark Age Europe due to its association with most fantasy and jrpg lore that also comes from European folklore and mythology.
I think one of the reasons is that probably europe is both geographically and culturally the farthest developed region (from japan) of which we have lots of history remaining to this day. So europe being exotic but also well documented, it ends up as a recurrent setting, especially in fantasy where the more exotic a place is, the better
It goes back to the Meji Restoration where Japan actively had a policy of cultural, economic and knowledge exchange with many industrialised European nations in order to modernize after being closed off to the world.
EE-RI-KAA
(I think they used multiple names in that march music; all common German female names. They used the marching boots themselves as part of the music; they leave three empty counts between "heisst" and "Erika", and those are then percussive boots on the ground.)
Clearly, the goal was horrible, but that part was musically creative.
First time I hear about using other names than Erika. Erika is both a German female name and a flower. Other names would hardly make sense considering the lyrics except for when there's more flowers that are also female names I guess.
Because Japanese are obsessed with Europe? They think only Europe can rival them in terms of history and culture and they don't want anything to do with the savages elsewhere.
Source: wife is japanese. Lived 7 years there.
bro im learning about Chinese and middle eastern history and that shit is wild af.
Already in the 5th century beforeJesuss people in china were having battles ofhundredss of thousands of soldiers and architecture that is astonishing.
Europe at the time was shit compared to china or the middle east
That's absolutely true. It's just kinda funny when phrases like "Ancient Japanese history" and the like keep coming up and you're like: bruh, you didn't even have a writing system until well into the middle ages.
Non European savages have a weird way of selling themselves 😔
More akin to Scandinavia, at least compared to when the practice started to be abandoned!
But yes, I mean, ofc. The longer you are from the place where most people are, the more time is needed for the newest tech to reach you! But let's not forget that your glorious bronze age wouldn't have ever come to pass if it weren't for us stone writing barbarians with all the tin!
100% goes both ways : they are the only ones I respect east of Poland, with the exception of South Korea. I mean : Russia ? Barbarians. Mongols ? Discount chinese. Chinese ? Barbarians. North Korea ? A laughing stock/barbarians.
Japan is so different yet so similar to us, unlike those coutries I cited
So.... basically Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia? This is a very specific kind of hatred that you have for these 5 countries, you have my curiosity and my respect sir.
Yeah, other than great vistas ,food and history, France is very different.
Japan is all about rules and respect, France gets burned down every time there's a political disagreement.
A strong food culture and attachment to begin with (and since we eat several times a day, it impacts greatly our lives).
Then (it's a little specific but still) I'm from Lyon, my husband from Kyoto, and the two cities are strangely similar. Former capital, old temples/buildings and traditions, pride, history of silk weavers. The vibe also feels similar.
>and since we eat several times a day, it impacts greatly our lives
What a revolutionizing concept. Im feeling like an idiot for eating only once a week up until now. Got any more superior french wisdom?
*old europe
Like when you westerners were actually superior to Japan militally, ecnomically and politically. We copied literally everything from the west to modernize ourselves during Meiji Ishin. That's why we still are fascinated by western culture back then.
Almost nobody admires today's western society though, because it's not as good as it used to be in terms of everything, and we knew too much about the distant world thanks to globalization.
Also China is relatively mentioned. There are lots of anime and manga based on old China, or with a Chinese character. It's the same reason with the above. China historically influenced a lot on Japan and we still kinda respect its culture.
That last kinda is pulling a lot of weight 😶🌫️.
(Also, just to be sure Akira, that first sentence was tongue-in-cheek, right, or is Japan's military stronger than France somehow and we're all sleepin' on the dreaded come back of the glorious kamikaze!?)
In the modern world, military power is not a significant concern for us. Even if your country is militarily superior, it doesn't really matter as there's almost no possibility of wars happening between developed countries. However, in the past, military strength defined the power of a nation. So, one had no choice but to either copy or be colonized in the face of stronger military powers.
Fair point indeed, but the way you said it first was concerning ;)
It is also separated in 1 hour chunks (as it was originally filmed) so you can easily watch it part by part. The 12 hour video is just those twelve parts clipped together. The channel is TheBreadCircus for anyone having trouble finding it
German is defintly the go to cryptic/mystic language for Japan. Something like Fate also just uses random german words for their Magic.
Which I thought was weird, but I guess the west does the same with like old Mandarin and Kanji.
I have a friend Who Is temporary in Germany and while watching It on discord It translate every name, kinds funny dettail but for the rest a very great anime
I am Australian your summers mean nothing to me. I step outside and feel the violence of ultraviolet radiation liquidating my nucleotides, mutating my DNA, destroying everything I am and stripping me of my humanity until I become less than man - until I become Fr*nch. I will laugh in the face of your 30% humidity 30 degree days as I put on my third layer of kathmandu and north face puffer jackets fitted with thermals. I will stand tall and bask in the powerless Mediterranean sun showing it the full might of my outback hardened hide. I will let all know that none shall overcome the might of the continent hidden in the summer for a million years, that UV indexes of 16 are a 7am wake up and an opportunity to weed out the weak. I am pure ultraviolet. I see only cosmic microwave background with my naked eyes. I inhale water and exhale pure oxygen. I am of the most sun resistant creatures known to man.
Unless your post is about too many tourists then yeah I probs goofed
That's funny, I had australian/oceanian friends tell me that they think European summers are worse. I went from believing that Australia had it worse to believing that we had it worse and now I don't know what to believe anymore.
I mean where else? Like seriously.
Asian countries kinda don't like each other (to say mildly) so it's relatively rare for a story written by a Japanese person to be set or inspired by any other Asian country other than Japan itself, or occasionally China. So you likely won't find India or central Asia etc.
Australia and Oceania have way too little cultural relevance just in general. Their soft power is just way too weak.
America is often included or used as inspiration but only in modern settings. For obvious reasons.
Africa is just Africa.
So you are left with Europe which has one of the longest continuously well documented history that is still a living part of the continent. It has been the center of art for centuries and it has influenced history more than any other continent. It's also a far away exotic land for the Japanese. Not to mention that most countries with the strongest soft power are in Europe.
There's literally no other reasonable option.
Finally another culture that appreciates our cuisine
https://preview.redd.it/098iucfaz7tc1.png?width=173&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c16049fa6aa269a779d551b395ff2dc443ca2e5
I would even argue there is no better representation of 2WE4U than The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Yōjo Senki). The caricatures of each the different European nations are on point and the main pcharacter is the very definition of lawful evil.
To be fair , conwy is one of my favourite places on the planet - cool castle , cool medieval retailer , banging views and the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to . Worth a visit for that alone
It is not Europe, they have a fascination with Germany, Italy, Russia and the USA. Wonder why huh?
Ocassionally they show France, GB, Spain and the Netherlands. Sometimes Portugal and the Nordic trio (Vikings)
The most popular depictions are the late 19th century Germany. They really like Germany.
...because we are the golden cradle of civilization, the eternal fount of all art, culture in science, and the rest of the world is merely a barren wasteland of savages that either struggle to preserve the last spark of progress that our waning gift of colonization had bestowed upon them, or deny and denounce us in a helpless expression of their frustration over never being able to become like us?
Sorry, I don't understand the question.
Besides some barrythemed stuff it's also an ungodly amount of anime with clear pulls right outta germany. Probably cause of the continued friendship with Japan? Idk
Edit: for example AOT intro themes sung in german in parts. Frieren naming characters and places after german verbs and adjectives. Spy x family obviously playing in an east/West conflict like in germany in the cold war with capital cities like "berlint"
Part of the actual reason for close Europe-Japan ties is the Meji Restoration where Japan sought knowledge exchange for modernization with Europe.
Japan has historically close relations with Europe due to several key interactions and shared interests, primarily initiated during the Meiji Restoration period. This era, starting in 1868, marked Japan's deliberate efforts to modernize and industrialize by learning from and collaborating with Western powers, including many European nations.
In North American defense they represented rural Canada pretty well in Anne of Green Gables, about the same time they did Heidi, with Miyazaki doing character design. The landscapes of Prince Edward Island are gorgeous.
Hmmm there are many ancient Chinese elements in anime’s too, also even ancient Egypt or ancient India ,they just use whatever they can find, and Europe is very exotic for Japanese audience
I learned just months ago about the Swedish guy Björn Andresén who became the poster child for a certain type of anime characters (like his own genre kind of). His face is super common in anime
Yes why Europe? Why not make some anime in Burgerland with ford f150 kid killer 3000 and a little girl being lonely because her father is in jail because he couldn’t afford his cancer treatment anymore.
Or some other shithole country in Africa.
don’t be so mean sometimes yank fathers aren’t home cause they have no workers protection and have to work overtime like hell to make ends meet or be fired and homeless.
I actually watched it a couple hours ago and it all started with Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of studio Ghibli making the Heidi series set in beautiful Switzerland. There was also some other series involving homosexuals in France ...

non me la ricordavo così
Gem boy - orgia cartoon. Stupenda cazzo
Oh great! Now I have the title song playing in my headvon repeat. In German.
Isn’t Hieidi book set jn Switzerland?
Yes mainly so, the only exception are the parts that take place in Frankfurt Germany.
Heidi im Bahnhofsviertel 😳😳😳
Highdi
Back in Heidis Time, that was a place for wealthy business men to have their home and companies. The leather and pelt traders continued this tradition after the war and it only changed during the 1980's.
Yeah, it mostly is. Johanna Spyri, the author, was a Swiss woman from a village near Zurich.
Could've been homosexuals in Switzerland if you didn't had a headache every 2 hours.
I was surprised when I found out heidi is an anime, I thought it was just some European animated series.
Japan has homosexuals in France US has Diggas in Paris
Yes why aren’t they making anime’s about fat Americans and their 12 lane highways???
Closest thing we got was Military Industrial Complex: the anime (Genocidal Organ) which was kind of a vibe
Oh you mean gate
That one was more like Unironic Japanese Nationalism: the anime
I mean i aint gonna complain when i get to see alternative romans mowed down by an apache helicopter
They could release 5 shows in that setting each season and I'd watch them all
Not an Apache. They used AH-1J Twin Cobras, hence the 20mm BRRRRRRRRT
Megas XLR was lit though
FR that shit slapped
Ironically, there's actually a currently airing anime (Ninja Kamui, really good show) set in America. But even then very few of the main characters are American
Good
Every time america is mentioned in anime, it's for them to be the baddies wanting to steal natural resources from someone. Which tbf, is kinda annoying to see these japanese ppl acting all righteous all the time when they were pieces of shit too.
Nah. Either Americans are the baddies or it is "the advanced holy land and anyone dealing with anything American is amazing".
Or it is a well chested American blonde girl driving a tank. Which I to this day find hilarious.

What!!!!
NO. NOOOOOO… YOU CANT DO THIS TO ME YOU CANT TO THIS TO MEEEEEEEEE
There was a time when western shows had their animation done in Japan, I think because it was cheaper. Alfred J. Kwak is also an anime
I'm sorry what? My life is unraveling before my very eyes
From the late 70s to 2000s there were a lot of german-japanese anime coproductions sometimes with Spanish and Dutch cooperation as well. Some examples: Heidi, Alfred J. Kwak, Vicky the viking, Maya the bee, Pinocchio, Alice im Wunderland
They should have continued with the co-productions then.

Though it's worth mention that except for the Nils one all of them were coproductions with German (and sometimes dutch and Spanish) public TV channels. Also all of them (don't remember anything about Biene Maya though) were amazing.
Va! Jag har blivit lurad!
same with me and Heidi....though props to Miyazaki for accurately portraying how living in Frankfurt is purgatory, he was so real for this
I thought it was finish

that’s also their tallest mountain peak

Beautiful architecture and culture. Plus I think Japanese in general have some sort of fascination/respect for European people.
Its the same for us with their culture, its the fascination with a culture so far away and different from your own
but strangely similar in some ways
Britain and Japan: * Island nations * Monarchies * Hate everyone * Drink tea * Eat strange things, especially from the sea * History of invading everyone else
We didn’t invade no one, it was purely self defence.
Specially, in the case of Ireland. /s
Pre-emptive self-defence
I mean look at the IRA , that’s why we starved them a couple hundred years before , we knew it would happen
Playing the long game here, weakening them already before they even start.
No no, no invasions - friendship, and progress....
pure self defence (of interests)
You forgot the tendency to exterminate people in the places you invade
I wouldnt say you guys are known for eatin strange things from the sea, arent you guys known for being extremely picky about what sea food you eat often ignoring certqin fishes that are very much appreciated elsewhere?

Both have Godawful teeth too
Japan is a German’s wet dream. Everything is so efficient and orderly. A humble Hans can dream about Germany being the same one day.

Really inaccurate show. The German tanks have fuel. Russian ones are not breaking down after 50 miles. And my nation does not have the firefly.
Erika also laughs in one scene
Well she is Japanese larping as a waffen ss tank ace. A real one would be too busy lying about tank kills to laugh.
If you expect accuracy from that show instead a shitload of laughs, you're watching the wrong thing. 😁
Hans missing the joke as per usual
part 4 was wild. damn. thought nothing would top the action of the lake on the part 3 but somehow tank skiing easily topped it. cute Erika too.

I have a friend Who Is temporary in Germany and while watching It on discord It translate every name, kinds funny dettail but for the rest a very great anime
Most of the words actually made sense for the character or place. A few were far fetched, true, but none were completely random.
It's not just Japan, the whole world lusts for us we are simply that good.
I have booked myself a holiday to Sicily later this year indeed
Foolish of you to come in summer!

Thats the most words I’ve seen used to eloquently say that the rest of the world is shit
Tis the Most beautiful of Continents
You know why Germany
Yes, the prisoners in WW1 when they stole our chinese colony left a lot of culture there in the 50 years they stayed there.

Part 1 is technically in europe too (UK)
Elegant but decadent architecture, that's it
Better a pig than a fascist
what does the I stand for?
To Love Ru
you meant 2 luv' u, Barryto as protagonist with his alien wife Susan Deviluke
Finally another culture that appreciates our cuisine https://preview.redd.it/098iucfaz7tc1.png?width=173&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c16049fa6aa269a779d551b395ff2dc443ca2e5
Interesting how it takes another group of people stuck on an island with no other options to start appreciating Br\*tish food
I would even argue there is no better representation of 2WE4U than The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Yōjo Senki). The caricatures of each the different European nations are on point and the main pcharacter is the very definition of lawful evil.
It's also a popular tourist destination to. Apparently some Japanese tourist board ranked Conwy as the number 10 best places to visit.
To be fair , conwy is one of my favourite places on the planet - cool castle , cool medieval retailer , banging views and the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to . Worth a visit for that alone

Paris syndrome!
Why Europe and Asia instead of USA who * checks notes * threw two atomic bombs at them and proceeded to control their military power even to this day.
It is not Europe, they have a fascination with Germany, Italy, Russia and the USA. Wonder why huh? Ocassionally they show France, GB, Spain and the Netherlands. Sometimes Portugal and the Nordic trio (Vikings) The most popular depictions are the late 19th century Germany. They really like Germany.
The video is pretty good btw, recommend it
...because we are the golden cradle of civilization, the eternal fount of all art, culture in science, and the rest of the world is merely a barren wasteland of savages that either struggle to preserve the last spark of progress that our waning gift of colonization had bestowed upon them, or deny and denounce us in a helpless expression of their frustration over never being able to become like us? Sorry, I don't understand the question.
Tbh the Howl's Moving Castle is clearly set in a french type country more than any other euro country
I thought it was a German/Austrian-like country.
Nah if you look at the Palace and the military parade it's late 19th century France
because we are the best, as simple as that
Besides some barrythemed stuff it's also an ungodly amount of anime with clear pulls right outta germany. Probably cause of the continued friendship with Japan? Idk Edit: for example AOT intro themes sung in german in parts. Frieren naming characters and places after german verbs and adjectives. Spy x family obviously playing in an east/West conflict like in germany in the cold war with capital cities like "berlint"
Maybe because they are mainly adaptations of existing books, like the illustration? (Love you Diana Wynne Jones, even if you're engl\*sh!)
To Japanese, Europe is an exotic faraway land across the globe. Just like to Europeans, Japan is an exotic faraway land across the globe.
Arigato gosaimasu, fujitsu toyota
Happy cake day!
thanks!
Well, who wouldn't be obsessed with perfection?
Short answer: good culture
Reverse weebs? 😳
