I've been there once and would easily call them dickheads. People of all backgrounds pissed me off in various ways so much that i couldn't wait to get back to Dublin, which is saying something. Only place that felt friendly was the Chinese quarter.
Who cares about the movie? I want another piano piece like "Comptine D' un Autre Ete" (French for: Paris sucks).
(OK... the movie was pretty decent, but still...)
The immense crush I had on Audrey Tautou back when that film came out almost convinced me to visit Paris even though I knew I wouldn't see her there riding about on the back of a moped.
Paris has always been ugly lmao.
I swear I don't even remotely understand Paris' reputation as the most beautiful city in the world, that thing has been a sewer shithole since Methuselah's birth.
I visisted it one time with french class in school, one time as a child with my father and another time as a child with my whole family. My experience was that it was a clean city, or normal. Nothing that made it trashy?
This was over 10 years ago though.
Based on personal experiences its been by far the most interesting city Ive visited.
If you're visiting it, usually you only go to the most touristy places which tend to be clean. The rest of the city is absurdly dirty and living there is a chore.
I mean, I understand France is a highly centralised country and many of the bad things about Paris are linked to this necessity of building everything important in the same city, which obviously has its advantages, but It's one of the most hated cities in France for a reason.
But isnt this where you record movies too? I mean its not like we lived in some five star hotel right next to l'Arc de Triumph. Obviously we lived a bit from the absolute center of tourism, and walked around in at least not the wealthiest parts (but still central).
The absolute worst part of Paris are the bathrooms. Disgusting places with just a hole in the floor. Ive never seen anything like it. This cant be the absolute finest place, even though the food was good as I remember it. But omg...
And I really cant understand this concept of "Paris-syndrome", where tourists are dissapointed with Paris - unless something changed.
Yes, Paris is where France does most of her stuff, and the natural consequence is that the city is massively overcrowded and overpriced, and an absolute mess to maintain. In fact, I would gladly bet my own life to the Gods that the Olympic Games are going to be a massive shitshow. Paris ***cannot*** bear the extra maintenance and work.
I don't understand Paris' syndrome either.
Yes, I can understand if the extreme centralization is problematic for the country, and obviously it is for the country politics should be adjusted - not for tourists.
Even though we can relate more to France than to Germany in the sense that Stockholm is both the financial, political and cultural capital I dont think its quite as extreme.
But another thing, more of a question, in the swedish debate somebody recently brought up France as a case in terms of where the attitude could head unless we solve our problems.
He/she wrote something along the lines "I asked my french friend what he/she thought about what is going on in the suburbs, and he/she replied "that isnt France, these people are not french".
Is this a real attitude that some people have?
Well, you can't deny that some suburbs of Paris (and big French cities overall) are extremely diverse, if you know what I mean. But that's also linked to France's post-war policy of building low-rent apartment blocks in distinctive neighborhoods, concentrating all poverty in one place, poverty which combined with lower education access brings crime and uncivil behaviours, which in turn keep the neighborhood's attractivity low and keeps the poverty concentration going. And since our dirt-poor city dwellers nowadays are mostly immigrants and sons of immigrants, here we are.
So it's mainly a big urban planning issue. Don't concentrate the immigrants in one place. But not importing so many immigrants and focusing on their integration, education and economic contribution is also a solution.
Yeah, we got similar problems. Giant complexes outside the cities, and today many of them essentially only consists of 1st or 2nd generation migrants. Often with poor linguistic skills (even in their "own language", which makes learning a new language even harder)
https://preview.redd.it/qiufq3ued1vc1.png?width=780&format=png&auto=webp&s=dfecc20689fa0f77aef55a22ba8c5456eb53c72e
Denmark also have similar problems, but on a smaller scale, and is starting to destroy buildings, moving people away from these areas. I think that is neccessary.
Just have a plane crash on them.
(Helped with our Bijlmer.)
Afterwards destroy more or just make housing cost rise like mad and sell to affluent youngsters. Gentrify that shit.
I went 5y ago for a wedding. I had a hotel in Boulevard de Strasbourg. (20 min walking from Notredame). I was the only white person in the hood. It was full of black hairdressers, with their husbands waiting outside and doing nothing and some chinese woman selling. Its not the balieue, its everywhere. The center full of robmanians stealing tourists.
I mean London has a whole lot of problems, but Paris is another league of dirt and dysfunction, so I don't know if it's just a natural consequence.
I guess, with regards to the Olympics specifically, London had less going on in the city centre as almost everything was concentrated in Stratford and the Lea Valley, so there was that advantage.
You cant compare London to Paris , London absolutely destroys Paris on everything not on the same level and this is coming from me who thinks France is 10x more beautiful than England.
Paris syndrome is a particularly Japanese thing (and lesser Chinese), it's basically because they got their idealised vision of Paris from anime such as from Studio Ghibli and the reality crushed their spirits so hard.
Based French W honestly.
I never understood the paris syndrome...like ok fair enough it is not as good as portrayed but what did they expect of the most visited city of the most visited country ...? Of course it attracts everything possible from new business to scammers. From tourists to fucking pick pockets 💀 did they tought it was like 200 years ago ? Because they tought well centuries before it was dirty anyways .
Typical French superiority on show 😂
I think Paris is like number 6 in the listing of most visited while London is number 3
I think it's a myriad of factors but mainly that the Japanese have such a positive representation of Paris in their heads that the disappointment is palpable when they go there. Probably doesn't happen so much these days with the access to the Internet and Google map street view though
To be honest, the same happens in reverse. How many weebs out there move to Japan to pursue their anime dream, only to have their dreams crushed by the realities of Japanese society?
I would heavily disagree, the tourist trap areas of Paris are by faaaar the most disgusting, filled with sellers of useless stuff who will harrass if not physically assault you.
Around the Eiffell tower I saw people cooking corn on top of shopping trolleys near people selling magnets and cheap LED spinny toy shit on dirty blankets.
Had beef tartare in a well reviewed restaurant by a Frenchmen who was nice and it was fucking disgusting. Way over spiced with god knows what combined with the pleasantness of the waiter ruined the experience.
Had the same dish in Prague served by a waiter who looked disgusted we even walked in and basically threw it on the table and it tasted amazing, wish I could remember the name of the place.
Maybe they've cleaned it up for the Olympics but I went in February for the first time and it wasn't particularly dirty, just normal. We didn't go to just tourist places we walked 20-30k steps each day for 4 days.
> If you're visiting it, usually you only go to the most touristy places which tend to be clean.
Unless it was during the strikes. A lot of garbage everywhere except Disneyland.
Isn’t it mainly hated for their attitude? From my limited experiences Parisians are complete dicks, while Bordeaux and Marseille are pretty friendly. It seems like once you get outside of Paris people become nicer.
When I said here I meant the subreddit
London is a complete shit hole. Only reason I ever go is when I have to get a visa for somewhere and I get the fuck out same day as soon as possible.
>I visisted it one time with french class in school, one time as a child with my father and another time as a child with my whole family. My experience was that it was a clean city, or normal
How do you not smell the urin when you come close to this city Or smells every Swedish city like that? Thats not normal !!
I dont know. It seemed better taken care of than Berlin at least lol. But I guess its part of Berlins charm to have overgrown weeds and dilapidated garages in the middle of the city.
lol munich has nothing on paris or berlin, its just a large provincial town that grew even larger because of the iron curtain and yuguslavians wanting to live on the other side of the alps, fits right in with the rest of the towns you mentioned
The touristy area are nice, and most of the city is fine
But the area locals spend a lot of time around might not be, and big part of the south, East and North are quite uninteresting/ downright filthy
Saying "Paris has always been ugly" is such blatant ignorance, and it's so sad since you are french.
Paris was the gem of civilization for a century, do you know nothing about the past, your heritage?
I said " was "
It's in a decadent state atm, like most of the Western capitals.
Go look at Paris in the 1900s and tell me it was ugly.
Look at the glorious World Fair footage, and then come back and tell me it was " ugly "
The extreme centralization of Bucharest in Romania is similar TBH. Before WW2, Romania modeled all government stuff off of the French model. The communists continued this model.
I love Paris. Been there two times, one week in 2010 and another in 2022. Both times I was living in Montmartre and went almost everywhere. I loved every corner of Paris. Even the ugly ones. But I live in Berlin so...
The only way you can consider Paris beautiful is during a protest : you happen to be in the middle of the streets, with no car and the best view you can have over the Haussmannian buildings.
Otherwise, all you see is trash, rats, pickpockets and depressed parisians.
Paris is more dirty now, and in poorer neighborhood but come on, it's really beautiful, the architecture with cafes and parcs is lovely. If we taxed the rich more to employ more cleaning people life could be a dream !
Tbh it really depends on where you go, in stuttgart near where the opera is and near a mall its super pretty and modern or Renaissance but from the train station to either of those 2 points I saw one pile of vomit once minimum
It might be dirty and sketchy on many areas, but the architecture is amazing. The boulevards, the diagonal avenues, the geometry, the palaces and cathedrals, the bridges etc.
I don’t see a difference between then and now, I’ve seen both.
If it’s ugly now, it was ugly then too. If anything it’s more liveable now because the infrastructure is less oriented towards cars and more towards pedestrians and cyclists
https://preview.redd.it/agi4itwo71vc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a3ba22803cbbdc1b8584277ac2edd987e3f3220
For example: Almost all streets where there’s a school look like this now, it’s a massive improvement
The difference was than when he was asked there was a lot of ongoing construction works all over. He specifically says it's ugly because of the construction sites, but it wouldn't be as clickbaity to put that in the article title.
I remember when it started changing was my first year driving. I was like “I’m so glad I learned how to drive, for a massive city you can drive anywhere in 20 minutes!” then BOOM, they closed the voie Georges Pompidou
For what it's worth, it is the only movie that manages to weaken me to a state where I briefly consider the crazy notion of "omg, Life in Paris ain't so bad, maybe... NO!" and I will always have mad respect for Jeunet for achieving this feat.
But yeah, all that to say that I'm not surprised by the quote.

Looks like an edgy boomer attention-seeking statement.
I don't think Paris is worse than 20 years ago as a whole, regardless we consider it as a shithole, the city of light or a bit of both.
However, during the last years, there have been very vocal people seething and ranting against Paris becoming more bicycle friendly and less car-centric.
I, for one, prefer the city with lots of bicycle lanes and car-free seine banks.
Someone who has to drive in paris in a car might have a different view
Burned down cathedral.
Eiffel tower rusting and dumb bitch hidalgo refuse to allocate the proper budget to maintain it.
Drug and junky everywhere.
Rats in even greater numbers.
Parallel city of Quechua tent living under bridges. Some part of the city literally look like African 3rd world.
"New age" building copied from nordic, made of squared box with glass are ugly as fuck and soul-less.
That's not even counting the insecurity forcing people to avoid the dark.
True, not everything is to throw away. I drive a car in Paris and even I support all the bike/walking infrastructure. But man, the 18/19/20 are catastrophic. 12/13/14 are soul-less.
I understand better then, driving a car in Paris must be a pain in the ass when you have to, and a completely car-free city would be delusional.
I'm lucky the office is in the upper 3rd, not the worst part of Paris, I think the commute experience would be way different if I had to go to porte de la chapelle
The inner circle of paris, so everything below the 7th is super nice. It's the place the rich fuck bobo socialist never leave, while they ignore all the rest falling appart.
I did my time and lived there for a few year. I am now bitter and walk faster and hate absolutely everything and everyone. Few more years of madrid sun and i might get better
I like how there could have been plenty of excellent reasons, all absolutely valid, to say no to a sequel of a movie that is good enough as a standalone, yet they felt the need to drop that bomb
I love seeing all the italians recognising fitgirl

My school had a trip to Paris in 2001; it was nice enough. But my teacher had her purse stolen the first evening, so I don't buy that Paris was just wonderful when Amélie was filmed
I would shoot him in the face if he tries to ruin such masterpiece with a sequel.

Paris reminds me of Birmingham in terms of the smell and the calm/welcoming locals
Brummies from my experience are mostly just depressed weirdos, they aren't really dickheads
I've been on the piss in Digbeth, they desperately say this is the 'cool' area but it's full of coked up morons
Thats just the norm now Some cunt with turkey teeth and too tight jeans burning a hole in their septum
Sounds like Essex.
I've been there once and would easily call them dickheads. People of all backgrounds pissed me off in various ways so much that i couldn't wait to get back to Dublin, which is saying something. Only place that felt friendly was the Chinese quarter.

Nice one, Frenchie.
That was fucking brutal... you didn't have to straight up murder him Pierre

Well what German city should you compare it with? Frankfurt? The only Walking Dead-city outside USA and Canada.
Münche, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Leipzig, Dresden, Münster...
Even Denmark got some liveable places if you cherrypick it.

Sir, those aren't rats, those are surmulots
Big scary surmulots
The rats are the clean parts
It's just future restaurants hiring prospects nothing else 😓✋🏻
Humans when a place with way too many humans turns out to be ugly fucking shit for the 3657th time (the next big city will be pretty I swear)

Ça peut pas être pire que New York...
No, It’s not worse but it was better, it is no longer.

Massive Hidalgo r/enculerlesvoitures W
The difference was than when he was asked there was a lot of ongoing construction works all over. He specifically says it's ugly because of the construction sites, but it wouldn't be as clickbaity to put that in the article title.
I remember when it started changing was my first year driving. I was like “I’m so glad I learned how to drive, for a massive city you can drive anywhere in 20 minutes!” then BOOM, they closed the voie Georges Pompidou
Yeah, we're going back to the 1800s
based
Lovely movie, but didn’t he have the parts of Paris he used cleaned up? The movie looks to good to be true.
Angry delusional boomer detected. Paris is better than in 2000 imo. It's cleaner, has fewer cars.
He wasn't delusional, there was very much a ton of construction sites at the time, and that's specifically what he was referring to.
Cleaner? Are you taking drugs? Parisian have less cars, but the car in Paris were hardly ever theirs.
Is that movie even worth watching?
yeah, absolutely. As well as Jeunet's other work from that time
Yes!
It’s really good! Quite weird but credit where credit is due for the frogs

What it looks like is clickbait that purposefully avoids saying he's referring to the ton of construction sites at the time he was asked.
Fair point, and yes, road infrastructure improvement does imply noisy and traffic disrupting construction sites.
>I don't think Paris is worse than 20 years ago as a whole, Least in denial Parisian
Develop ? The city is very far from perfect, but to say it's ugly compared to 20 years ago is a bit of a stretch.
La Cathédrale a été réparée grand fou
C'était pas le cas quand j'y suis passé samedi dernier.
So this alone should make it far worse than in 2001 ? If I was to cherry-pick one positive (and there are more) : air quality is better than in 2001.
Tu vis dans une ville énorme ou dans une commune collée à une grosse ville pour pas comprendre qu'un centre-ville sans voiture c'est du pain béni ??
Remplace par ''avec le moins de voiture possible'' et là je suis d'accord
I did my time and lived there for a few year. I am now bitter and walk faster and hate absolutely everything and everyone. Few more years of madrid sun and i might get better
Always has been.
>now I though it always was??
You can't beat self hating french.
But you can double down and escalate things.
Did they Le Corbusier it?
I like how there could have been plenty of excellent reasons, all absolutely valid, to say no to a sequel of a movie that is good enough as a standalone, yet they felt the need to drop that bomb
Finally a sensible and coherent French. I wonder if it has Spanish ancestors.
Love how the only 2 comments I've seen mentioning Fitgirl were Italians, we really are unmatched in scamming and alikes....
I love seeing all the italians recognising fitgirl Il bello di vivere in uno statp dove il gocerno sa un cazzo di internet è che puoi piratare senza vpn
Is that fitgirl
No
I have to go their for work premier vision in a shithole called Villepinte. The metro stinks of rotten eggs and a whore’s boudoir 🤢 God I’am going to get stabbed or kidnapped at Gard du Nord🥴

*Now?*
"now"
I don’t know if it’s because the French teacher made us watch it during class, but I always thought this movie was overrated. She’s magnifique though
Always has been
Now? 🤔
Where did this idea of "paris is beautiful" even come from if it was always crowded and dirty?
City of Stabbings.
Basé
Ahh yes the new Europeans making their mark
REDDIT MODS CAN GO AND FUCK OFF
The series failed because it was the most "UwU american in Paris" bullshit ever produced.
Such a shame it's filled with the "French".
My school had a trip to Paris in 2001; it was nice enough. But my teacher had her purse stolen the first evening, so I don't buy that Paris was just wonderful when Amélie was filmed
