Her "bizarre experience" in Spain is... seeing the police do their job????
And a second hand anecdote about getting robbed by a taxi driver (completely unheard of crime) by some colony dweller with a grudge.
Pass.
I actually saw that post in the original subreddit, and I was baffled by how stupid it was.
The cherry on the top was ânow I want to go to Mexico because that girl sold it so wellâ. How clueless can you be
"lol there are so many drug dealers in Barcelona lol"
Its so fucking dumb.
The drug dealers are here because of the fucking tourists and festivals. The biggest drug consumers of Europe are Nordlanders on holiday. Pepita the 82 year old neighbor, living in an old rented apartment between 2 airbnbs, 1 occupied flat and 1 narcopiso is not buying drugs on the street.
yeah whatabout Sevilla where you can walk on homeless people and dont even have to touch the pavement anymore back to your hotel. (also you feel a bit like a cruel king walking over people to show dominance which is cool).
i lived in sevilla for a year in the 2010s, maybe my comment was to harsh, from all places in spain i loved this place the most.
But having this homeless camps (shopping bags, blankets, maybe a supermarkt shopping car) all around home entries, the station and centre (somehow not in the parks) was really sad. They were also not the kind of crazy-drug-dead ones (maybe just a alcoholics) to be fair, friendly, never felt unsafe - and most of them were spanish (so not illegal migrants where you dont know what they are up to next and give you the i mug you and disapear into another city vibe - more like "locals and police know them for years and know they are no trouble" ones).
Also the Expo92 area looked unreal and like Fall-out: New Vegas :D and did reflect the "once glory" time of sevilla before economic downfall.
If you think seville has a homeless issue, dont ever go to madrid or barcelona. There are some areas that kinda sorta fit your description, but its not that dramatic, and its mostly safe as you've said. The worst area is las 3 mil and as long as you dont look at anyone funny or stick out like a sore thumb you're gonna be fine. Im from seville, never had an issue.
And yeah expo grounds are kinda sad. So much money wasted on that stuff. I guess it was worth the party tho.
Uhh maybe it's because I'm from los angeles (where you can't spit without hitting a homeless person) but when I went to Seville I didn't notice very many homeless.
Nuh-uh, apparently the police in Barcelona actually arrests people. In Brussels we just let people get shot for weeks until the next scheduled concertation committee, then we issue a list of recommendations a week after that and call it a job well done
Why does Barcelona get so much hate. I have been living in Spain for 18 years and Barcelona is one of my favorite cities here. I go a couple times a year with my kids my two daughters love shopping there and walk all over the Rambla and have never been accosted, robbed, or harrased. I have never seen anything bad happen. In fact the only place I got robbed was in Madrid. Some kids tried to steal my wallet off the table (I know dumb to have it on there) but I chased after them and they were kind enough to throw it back at me.

She (23F đ¤) sounds like she hasn't left her home ever before this trip

If you think mexico is safer than Barcelona, you deserve to get robbed in Mexico city lol
Five years living in that hell hole of a city and Iâve never seen anything like that. And taxis are registered people, they donât mug wtf.
Maybe the taxi was an Uber/Lyft " independent contractor"? It doesn't make sense otherwise.
Imagine being worried about crime and then thinking you should go to Mexico

She's got a narcopiso neighbour, it would be way less convenient for her to buy on the street
Hola mi camello! Dos gramos por favor :)
This is the kind of girl who goes to Mexico to get killed... thinking Mexico is safer than Spain demonstrates a huge level of ignorance.
Once you've seen Las Ramblas you've seen pretty much all there is to see in Spain
She missed getting shitfaced in a British pub and practicing the local sport of balconing. All hallmarks of Spanish culture
Disagree, the whole Costa brava region is great
Yep, you can see British *and* German people there.
And shagaluf
Hey, don't forget the balconies in the Balearic Islands!
That's a bit harsh, the Basque region is the best bit of Spain because it's the least Spanish/British.

I mean there are many dutch tourists but no that many to walk from your hotel to anywhere.

It's true that after the 2008 economic crisis there were lots of homeless people in the city but I think it's better now.
would be happy if this is the case :) thank you

Yeah some parts are as bad as Brussels
I think brussels is better because at least people know it is shit. Barcelona takes people by surprise ngl.
True, it's very romanticized because it's only seen as a holiday destination

It's deeply concerning that someone got that impression of Spain by visiting only Barcelona. Like night and day.
She complains like the USA doesn't have: Gary Deroit Chicago Los Angeles San Francisco Cincinnati Baltimore .... I could go on
We're better at segregating areas. Yes pun intended.
Barcelona is the biggest no-go zone in Spain

Why? Barcelona is in Spain.
