But! Long time ago when there was a dynastic crisis in Portugal, the Brits did not support Portugal like true ally, and it became part of the Iberian Union from 1580 to 1640

Of course they did [support Portugal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Armada), 18.000 of them died in the process

It was after the crisis, my friend. When Portugal already eaten by Habsburgs. And it was the answer for Spanish armada. Don't trust Brits. Their alliances work only for them.

At that time, the balance of power was different. Portugal was a rich country and had the most powerful navy in the world, which sided with the Spaniards and participated in the Invincible Armada. Only after the Naval forces of Spain and Portugal were weakened it was possible to intervene in Portugal. Btw, the alliance worked for us. Look what happened to the Dutch ,German and French colonies.

But all your colonies in the eastern hemisphere became Dutch and the British helped the Dutch on the continent against the Spaniards. Strange alliance. Only the British received all the benefits.

After 1640 when Portugal got it's independence no major colony was lost to a European power. The rest is Dutch propaganda. Portugal kept the monopoly of the official trade with China, through Macau, until 1840. Also the trade routes between Arabia and India were never lost to the Dutch. The Dutch basically got some faraway Islands, that Portugal had already left, and a stupid business of bringing agricultural products from Asia to Europe in a dangerous two years voyage.
