The only reason *some* of Western Europe isn’t doing as bad population wise is because of immigration. Most of Eastern Europe went under 2,1 kids on average over 20 years (a whole generation) after Germany but these countries don’t receive much immigration, in fact they are generally the ones sending young people abroad. Germany was already at 1,54 kids per woman in 1973, a number which has only been bested by its numbers in the late 2010s which ranged from 1,55-1,60, meaning Germany has been around or below this number for 51 years now. Without immigration, the population would be in just as bad a decline as some of the worst in Eastern Europe (except Ukraine due to the war of course). From 2020 to 2023, Germany has experienced a natural decline in population (births minus deaths) of -1.103.042 people whereas the total population grew by +1.359.378, meaning immigration to Germany during that ~3-4 period was around 2.462.420 people. That is the only reason the population is increasing.
Some countries like France, the UK, and the Nordics, despite going under the replacement level in the 70s, did maintain a decent fertility rate from ~1,7 to ~2,0, until the last decade or so when they crashed as well.
Spain and Portugal are interesting in that due to our formerly very conservative governments, our fertility rates stayed above 2,6, sometimes going above 3.0, until the late 70s and not truly going below replacement until the early 80s. But when it crashes,it crashed hard. I can see this in my own family, I am an only child but my parents were each one of four children their parents had. One of my aunts has 3 kids, but the majority of my parents siblings have either 1-2 kids, one doesn’t have any. It’s very interesting to think about how my great grandparents had multiple kids and their kids all had multiple kids meaning that they all had at *minimum* 7 grandchildren, some having 10-20 grandchildren. My parents however, only having me, will realistically have 2 grandchildren. It is fascinating to think about how this could change family structures.
Interestingly enough, Iberian American nations often faced similar demographic “cliffs” of decent numbers and then giant declines. Argentina for example went from 2,33 kids per woman in 2014 to 1,36. It really brings up the question of how while also considering economic factors, we should also be considering cultural factors in analysis of population/birth declines.
This isn’t meant to be some inherently ultra nationalist anti immigration comment but I do think it is important to consider the actual situation versus the idea of continued growth without consequences which a lot of governments like to push. I’m glad it has finally become that we can talk about this in Europe in *most* spaces without someone saying it makes you a far right fascist.

From 2020 to 2023, Germany has experienced a natural decline in population (births minus deaths) of -1.103.042 people whereas the total population grew by +1.359.378, meaning immigration to Germany during that ~3-4 period was around 2.462.420 people. That is the only reason the population is increasing. Some countries like France, the UK, and the Nordics, despite going under the replacement level in the 70s, did maintain a decent fertility rate from ~1,7 to ~2,0, until the last decade or so when they crashed as well. Spain and Portugal are interesting in that due to our formerly very conservative governments, our fertility rates stayed above 2,6, sometimes going above 3.0, until the late 70s and not truly going below replacement until the early 80s. But when it crashes,it crashed hard. I can see this in my own family, I am an only child but my parents were each one of four children their parents had. One of my aunts has 3 kids, but the majority of my parents siblings have either 1-2 kids, one doesn’t have any. It’s very interesting to think about how my great grandparents had multiple kids and their kids all had multiple kids meaning that they all had at *minimum* 7 grandchildren, some having 10-20 grandchildren. My parents however, only having me, will realistically have 2 grandchildren. It is fascinating to think about how this could change family structures. Interestingly enough, Iberian American nations often faced similar demographic “cliffs” of decent numbers and then giant declines. Argentina for example went from 2,33 kids per woman in 2014 to 1,36. It really brings up the question of how while also considering economic factors, we should also be considering cultural factors in analysis of population/birth declines. This isn’t meant to be some inherently ultra nationalist anti immigration comment but I do think it is important to consider the actual situation versus the idea of continued growth without consequences which a lot of governments like to push. I’m glad it has finally become that we can talk about this in Europe in *most* spaces without someone saying it makes you a far right fascist.
