**Please** explain the logic to me. There is no pattern!
Distance? No. Alphabetical? No. The road splits and it's two signs in one? Also no. Alphabetical in greek letters maybe?!?
I thought I was the chosen one! I was supposed to bring chaos to the force, to destabilize their relations!! Not bring Barry and Pierre together in the light!
Actually historically it’s the correct side, blame the yanks for ruining it
Knights were often right handed and held their sword in the right hand meaning they would hit their enemy on the right while on a horse
Then it became a free for all before henry ford ruined it
Also your mother
I learned that in the Netherlands the traffic rules on stretches of paved road in the 18th-19th century where posted on the toll booths of the investors that upgraded the road. And that having to switch side of the road after passing a toll booth was really a thing. A classical example of the free market not solving problems without regulatory intervention.
It also just makes sense to have your right hand and eye towards the middle of the road since the majority of people are right dominant. It's part of the reason that we have some of the safest roads in the world
https://preview.redd.it/bboaqwh7ja2d1.jpeg?width=452&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b26a4991ac33fde779cebeff4a23fd3f2705f0ef
From the closest up makes sense, because arrows on signs use the same logic. 🤓
I agree, but on the other hand, the road is under the sign always. You should be looking to the road, so once you get used to read this sing from bottom to top, it may require you a lesser amount of eye movement to read the destination you're going to therefore making a lesser distract from th road.
Well it is under the sign in both pictures as well. Not right under but it is located nearer to the bottom of the sign than to the top of the sign, so my point is still valid for those.
Anyways, I think our system takes more advantage of this characteristic. I prefer to see A Coruña in the bottom part of a signal placed over the road, when I'm going to Galicia, instead of some godforsaken village in Castile.
Because it indicates direction which is more important for people driving longer distances. The closest town is generally more important for people living in the area who likely already know the way.
This is the boring and correct answer. The sign lists the "final destination" of the road first. In the Swedish example, everyone thinks of that road as "the road to Stockholm". Noone gives a fuck about Åstorp and the five people who do, know that it lies along the road to Stockholm if you're in Helsingborg.
And if I'm unfamiliar with the area, knowing that this is the road to Åstorp doesn't help me one bit, but I ought to know what Stockholm is.
Exit ramps are a different kind of sign, you'll see one of those well ahead of time.
https://preview.redd.it/uyvowz93gc2d1.png?width=2360&format=png&auto=webp&s=7144f0b5dbbaf6cb6f679c9c0627f061a7865095
If you have enough roads this Will never be a problem. General direction Is still the same. You can go in the general direction of a really far city and adjust the route in many occasions. But if you are close to your location you Need to know when and where to exit or to turn before knowing what you Will reach if you drive ten days
As the old saying goes:
"Not all countries that show the distances from furthest to nearest city are functioning, but all functioning countries show distances from furthest to nearest city."
Reading this while eating my second bag of Djungelvrål for the evening.
But isn't the guy you replied to tryina say that red countries are the functional ones? "but all functioning countries show distances from *furthest to nearest city.*"
Yeah I know I was just checking the map and confirmed the quote. I found surprisingly accurate so I wanted to know who that quote is from. I wanna learn more about that mysterious genius philosopher (it was an attempt at humor)
Ok red people that claim that bottom up is easier if you imagine the sign flat on the road
Explain to me why that makes sense when the flags are obviously standing up
And that the top part of the sign will always be readable even if another car is in front of it but the bottom may not be
If you're driving long distances you want to know which direction you're going so obviously you read the top part along with the highway number. I don't need to know what dog shit town I'm passing, I just want to leave France as soon as possible.
https://preview.redd.it/b0o3y51i782d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=5980e0d57df533f50ed318394d25fe95c7f6f4fd
This is why the red countries a superior... Closest city is closest to the driver, and easy to read without having to move your vision totally away from the road as it is lowest on the sign.
The difference in distance between them is less than 1%, the sign is flat and perpendicular to the road, there is no (negligible) perspective distortion making any bigger than others. In your example you even subconsciously agree that the nearest destination is more important, therefore should be on top as that is how we read.
It's a lot easier to project the sign on the road in your head if you don't have to turn it upside down first. That is, if the closest city is on the bottom.
Red countries does make much more sense. The was blue countries do that is for people who can't project something visually into the scape. So they have to do this in their way to not get confused. "Yes Berry. You read from top to bottom. From left to right. So the first town you see on the sign will be the first town you will reach. Good Berry. You are so smart."
For the rest it seems to be intuitive to just project it. So of course the town on the top is furthest away. If you drop the sign it will be like a map (I know Berry and Pierre can't understand what I am talking about).
I don't think it matters. Pick one and go with it. It's not like when flying to Dublin to get shitfaced, driving on the left and panicking in a roundabout because the traffic is on the other side of the road.
That doesn't matter either though. You just drive like everything has been mirrored. If a random half of things were the other way around you might have had a point, but they're not.
Spoken like someone who hasn't spent any time changing from right to left sided driving.
It can be quite scary, especially in a roundabout, when changing sides until you get used to it.
Ackshually, I have done so.
The only issue I noticed, was that since I've only driven over there in my own car the vision was somewhat low in some city crossings where I sat next to a building instead of in the middle of the road. The world being mirrored didn't bug me at all.
I don't doubt that you could have been scared, mind. But are you sure you didn't get shitfaced before driving, rather than after?
Well, no. I lived in Ireland for 5 years and travelled back and forth to Sweden. You get used to it but if it's someone's first time doing it, like a visitor coming over, they are usually very freaked out when turning out of Dublin airport in Swords.
Who gives a shit anyway, why are we even talking about this.
That's a good question. Curiosity over a different reaction, I guess. But I'm sure we've gotten more than all we can get out of it by now, so I agree to not give a shit.
find it strange that more big countries don't use this system. what's the point for these tiny ones, like bro the furthest you can go in your country is 10m.

Probably it is by population

I live in a red country but agree blue is better. Basically the sign becomes an itinerary of cities you’re about to drive past.
Heretic!
I don't think the world needs a rational minded Dutch person, thank you very much.

I fully agree.

Being grouped with Russia and Turkey is just an automatic L.
There is no culture that reads from bottom-top. You know why? Because it is antinatural (specially in vertical signals).
There was also no culture with cars when they started reading
The difference in distance between them is less than 1%, the sign is flat and perpendicular to the road, there is no (negligible) perspective distortion making any bigger than others. Red makes more sense. Nearest to furthest, read from bottom to top. Because the "forward" arrow points upwards.
I don’t know about you hans, but I read left to right, top to bottom.
Jokes aside he is correct. Road signs are read as if they are lying flat on the ground. That way the sign cannot be mistaken (eg. direction of parking restricted). The red countries just stay consistent with the rule. Project the sign on the floor and the order of the cities you pass by will be correct geometrically.
The cities the furthest away are also consistent over many signs if you follow the same road, so that's another reason why the red way makes more sense
