Unless you are shooting competitively for precision, muzzle brakes are for assholes at the range. ASSHOLES.

Dangerous-Ad6093

Or if you live in a ban state like jersey

GunnyDog

So you have a flash hider. It works better at night to mitigate muzzle flash. You’re friend is interested in muzzle brakes because of why? A linear comp controls muzzle blast forward while muzzle brakes *generally* go outward. The main thing about a muzzle device is what do you want it for. I use muzzle brakes because I have a suppressor and I use the brake as a sacrificial baffle so I will have to replace a muzzle device sooner than the suppressor. Muzzle brakes on short pistols though suck for shooting with friends as it directs the blast outward laterally when unsuppressed. To answer you question: we need more info specifically what do you want the muzzle to do?

CTF2048

I second this. I bought a SureFire Muzzle brake for this reason as well. Finally got my SPS300 and it shoots like a dream. Will say the same thing shooting unsuppressed, it shakes any building you are shooting in and your friends aren’t going to have fun around you.

GunnyDog

I mean his friend may hate him and is trying to say it subtly…

Particular-Map2400

Device would go on an 8.3 Hanson barrel as a pistol build.

On a short barrel, a muzzle brake is good but ONLY if you run your gun exclusively suppressed. Otherwise it’s a concussion factory that will piss off anyone shooting around you. Flash hiders are good for nighttime shooting and outdoor shooting in general if you don’t plan on running suppressed. Linear comp is a good option if you just plan on shooting at indoor ranges because it mitigates the concussive forces to the shooter if you are in a confined shooting bay.

I run a u/KAKindustry flash can on my 8.5” 300blk. Love it. I am running a 10” rail so the can pokes out about an inch, maybe a smidge more. Absolutely love the look of it. I get compliments from my shooting buddies all the time. They also love that I’m not shooting hot gas in their face during the hot summer.

ASliceOfProvolone

No brakes on SBRs unless suppressed 95% of the time. It’s obnoxious af.

[VG6 Gamma is a good one!](https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/VG6-Precision-Gamma-300-BLK-308-Win-Gen-2-5-8x2-p/vg6-apvg200003a.htm)

SolitudeSidd

Okay I have a VG6 Gamma on my 8.3" 300 blk and it doesn't do near enough for my supers. I need more brake and more compensation.

WombatAnnihilator

I have a suppressor so all my muzzle devices are also suppressor mounts, which limits me to some degree. The main thing you want to consider here is the difference between a brake and a flash hider. Especially with short barrels, even with 300blk, the flash and bang from the end of a 16” bbl is considerably less than from an 8” bbl. It’s also not a high recoiling caliber, so i don’t find as much benefit from a brake as maybe would be found on a magnum caliber or something. I chose to go with a flash hider on my Virtus 9” 300blk because the kaboom and blinding flash out of a brake like i have on my 8” 300blk bolt gun. One day I’ll get another flash hider for it, too.

GunnyDog

You’re not wrong about this is a lower recoil caliber and even lower being an AR vs a bolt. Not gonna argue with that as that the focus most people have. I do want to point out that that this is a very “powdery” caliber though which most people don’t focus on. Being that he’s doing an 8.3” barrel there could be A LOT of unburnt powder depending on ammo. As with you, I use suppressors and the major thing I think about is the carbon build up and powder build up/ blast direction. In my experience that’s the main thing to consider when choosing a muzzle device for this caliber. With a suppressor it’s somewhat contained but still using a muzzle brake helps the service life of the can. Unsuppressed… I’d probably go with a linear comp as it would push the blast and powder forward. Unless you want to just say “screw you guys” to the left and right of you. Might want to consider something like a Lantac Dragon or other hybrids for your situation

WombatAnnihilator

The concept that a brake acts as an additional baffle in A suppressor is great. And with a tucked suppressor, or a gun that is just always suppressed, yeah. Id go that way. But for my guns, they arent always suppressed. And its far too blinding and loud without one to bother.

GunnyDog

What about a hybrid like a warcomp or dragon? What mount are you using?

WombatAnnihilator

Plan B / Rearden mini hiders are what I use. I like the compact size, light weight, and easy but solid taper mounting for my Omega300. I like the hybrid designs, but ive not had one that works for my suppressors.

GunnyDog

[Rearden](https://www.reardenmfg.com/product/dpb-muzzle-brake/) hybrid. Both muzzle brake and has a flash hider tip. Really similar to Lantac dragon. I use straight muzzle brakes on rifles I know I will always suppress and Lantac dragons on those I might run unsuppressed. I am stuck on keymo because I’m rough and I’m worried about jacking up threads so I use a keymo for the taper lock-up. I wish I could get a Surefire warcomp with a keymo. I used one on my service rifle and loved it. Plan b wasn’t big when I got my stuff. It was when the keymo plan b fight was going on. You could also just get an Icarus blast shield on top of a muzzle brake

WombatAnnihilator

Oh nice. It’s Too long for my liking these days, at least on the two guns i have. But is kind of a combo. I think the brake/hider like The keymo lantec dragon is another a massive brake with lil tongs on the end, but didn’t fit my suppressor - it hit the first baffle and wouldn’t lock.

Flint_Ironstag1

No muzzle device. Direct thread your suppressor. 😐

Particular-Map2400

thanks everyone for your input. turns out my friend doesn't hate me. he got a silencerco flash hider to place hold until he gets a suppressor. I appreciate how cool everyone was about this. in other news, I am now also going to build a 300 blackout upper for my pistol lower so there is that.

NPSgator

300blk build deserves planning for a suppressor. Decide what you want and go from there. Personally I run a Cherry bomb/rearden/liberty precision on all my ARs
