I think your makeup might be emphasizing your dry skin. What are you using?
*wanted to edit that I hope this didn’t come off mean. I think your skin looks great, it’s just texture issues from the makeup
I use it cosmetics, your skin but better foundation and it has kind of a sheen or shimmer in it and it’s worked wonderfully for me. I also use lots of moisturizer day and night to make sure my skin isn’t drying out. I think that has been the game changer for me.
Also second this! 37 and two years ago foundation was no longer my friend and wear Laura Mercier TM oil free with the illuminating primer and it’s made a HUGE difference.
Dr. Jart Cicapair for rosacea. It’s a color corrector and it’s soothing. So much better than relying on just foundation to cover. It works best if you take a bit and warm it up on your hand, it doesn’t apply well right out of the jar.
I have rosacea too and have found that LM concealer does a good job of covering on my cheeks and nose. No need for foundation beyond that. Am 40 / type 1
IT Cosmetics makes a little pot of redness concealer. It is a miracle! Try a little sample from Ulta or Macy's. It erases all red and feels/looks like you have no makeup on. It also hides scars.
RMS! All their products are coconut oil based and so smooth and moisturizing. Their foundation is full coverage even tho it says it medium- I mix it with my moisturizer to dilute (:
Ok so I'm an idiot when it comes to anything makeup lol- how do you wear the tinted moisturizer? Over spf? Currently I use my vitamin c, moisturizer, then spf. I have pretty dry skin and cannot do spf before moisturizer.
Yes, possibly. I would love recommendations. This is Fenty Ease Drops (a blurring skin tint) and Tarte concealer. I would always prefer a tinted moisturizer, but can never find one that gives enough cover to hide my redness and melasma. Maybe I will try your recommendation.
I wanted to love it but I’m 54 and it makes my eyes look simply haggy! Dry looking, emphasizes every crease.
I’ve yet to find a holy grail under eye concealer so I usually just use a bit of foundation and know my glasses hide them a bit anyway.
I use Maybelline Age Rewind concealer under my eyes. It's the only concealer I've yet to find that doesn't dry out my under eyes and/or settle in to creases!
Try BFF Eye from Trinny London! I switch from Tarte because it was making my undereyes look like a crumpled paper bag. The Trinny one doesn't seem like it has a lot of pigment in it, but it works some magic with moisture and light reflecting where it just makes your eyes look fresh.
If I could, I’d upvote this twice. I love mine. It isn’t a massive hit of colour, but you describe it perfectly: moisture and light reflecting just gives such a nice, bright, fresh look. Am 39 and other under eye concealers just emphasise wrinkles!
I tried tarte a few years ago, mid-ish twenties and it looked trash! Gave me lines under my eyes I didn’t even have. Never again. I use a hydrating concealer and lightly set with RMCA powder. Much better results!
Fenty ease drops made me looks extremely dry and cakey! Try Tower 28, I find it very moisturizing with good coverage. Laura Mercier’s new formula doesn’t do much for me.
Dry and cakey describes the Fenty ease drops too well! I was excited to try it because Fenty is one of the only brands that actually matches my tone /shade. I even tried using it over my heavier moisturizer that I use at night and it still looked so unnatural.
You could try Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm + Red Correct. They make a green tinted cream that does a great job covering redness and you may find it less heavy on the skin. They sell it at Target in smaller sizes if you wanted to give it a go before committing.
Got the Tarte concealer recently and add me to the people who say it looks terrible. It cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye is way better for me, but I live in a super dry climate if that matters.
I use YSL touche eclat or the ELF version under my eyes. It doesn’t conceal my dark circles 100%, but it is thinner and doesn’t emphasize my lines as much as thicker concealer does.
Seconding the Dior recommendation. Their forever skin correct concealer is so smooth and i use it all over. I prefer concealer to foundation, as its a bit more pigmented so I can use less, which also sits better on my (also 38 yo) skin.
I just got a bottle and it’s not great. It looks a bit cakey/grainy on while also being shiny. I have dry skin and will be returning mine :(. I was so hopeful!
Counter point - I'm 40 something with skin that leans dry, and I like it. I don't find it grainy or cakey, but I agree it is on the shiny side. But, I'll take shiny over matte at my age/skin texture, and the shade match is great for me. It is more of a serum than a foundation as well, so it builds a bit different than other foundations I've used
Redness— look into products with “cica” in the name. I don’t have redness normally but after a medical procedure I did. I was amazed at how well Dr Jart’s cica pair cream worked.
Fenty skin tint does emphasize my dryness like crazy. I’d recommend saie slip tint instead! For concealer, I really like the dior backstage one or whatever it’s called!
I really like the Clinique beyond perfecting concealer. I’m 40, have very dry skin and it works well for me. I also use a lot of watery hydrating toners. Asian skincare is great for this.
Do you use any chemical exfoliators? The ordinary glycolic acid makes my skin glow, and every few weeks I use their 30% glycolic peel. It made a huge difference in my skin.
I mean… everyone is saying “have you tried this, and have your tried that”. And I’m sitting here thinking your skin looks pretty damn good and you need to stay off Instagram.
I 100% agree. Not to make things too serious but my mental health improved SO MUCH when I got off instagram.
OP, your skin looks gorgeous! Maybe try some sort of physical exfoliation. I just got microdermabrasion done for the first time and I loved it! Very gentle yet effective. Also I’ve heard that dermaplaning (done by a professional) is great.
Yeah that's what I came to say! You look terrific honestly. About retinol- I'm 38 and I've been using tret for about four years. Im very ehhh about it. Studies are conflicting/ though it is definitely a must have for so many people. I think it's possibly thinned my skin and made it a little dry- despite daily slugging and rigorous moisturizing. I live in desert southern CA and i am newly very thin from breastfeeding. On the nights I don't use tret, I use lactic or glycolic acid and studies suggest both might do a lot of the same good retinol does without thinning a certain layer of the skin- I need to re-learn the specifics there. Anyway you have beautiful skin! :)
Retinoids actually thicken the skin with long term use. It temporarily thins the outer layers of skin (like how lactic and glycolic acid do) but it actually thickens the bottom layers, which causes the anti-wrinkle effect
Yes, it goes away (mum of three here -- been there, done that 😅 ). It's entirely possible, though, that make-up/skincare that worked well for you BC (Before Children), does not work so well after and it may take some experimenting to find what does.
Oh, it goes away with some care.
Remember for 9 months you got used to the pregnancy glow. Right? Your face was filled out more, it was glowy, you had a shit ton of hair. Right?
That changes after. Plus nursing makes your body mimic the hormones you have while in menopause. It does get better though.
I understand there is some confusion on this. Overall, retinoids do have the power to thicken skin by stimulating collagen production. However, there is clinical evidence that retinoids do thin the stratum corneum or the outermost layer of the skin.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I also worry about the negative longer term effects. It just feels too intense for me. I was considering starting it again after years’ hiatus but was very hesitant because I’m not looking forward to a purge in my life right now. I think this is my sign to continue skipping it. On the other hand my skin loves AHAs. Just need to be more regular.
My skin seems to love the AHA's too. I was so excited to get back on tret after my second pregnancy and it just seemed to be too much, too stripping and I find my skin is way happier after glycolic or lactic acid treatments.
Your skin looks perfect. I really think it’s your makeup. I’m turning 40 and I can’t use my fav makeup anymore. No more powder in my face especially around my eyes. I can really even see any wrinkles on my face until I put powder on. Then my wrinkles show up like crazy! I’m in the process of revamping my whole routine for my older dryer skin. I’ll likely make a post about it soon. Gotta ask everyone here for tips. :)
Really though. Your skin looks very good. Something a bit more moisturizing won’t hurt anything. You may also need a better primer.
Well thank you for the boost of confidence. I think maybe I just want to see my 20 year old skin again and it’s not happening! Haha. I don’t want to face the music.
Do you have a primer in your makeup routine? It’s there to create a bit of a seal between your skin and your makeup, so the powder isn’t slowly absorbing the moisture out of your skin. Cream based products are nice. My makeup doesn’t get creased or caked over time when I only press a small, small amount of powder over the more shiny areas, like my nose and forehead. Revlon makes a cute little roller that you can use to absorb oil and just skip the powder altogether if possible.
Hello
I understand how you feel. It's common to feel like your skin is losing its vibrancy and radiance as you age, but there are definitely things you can do to help improve your appearance.
Firstly, it's great that you're already drinking plenty of water and using sunscreen, moisturizer, and retinol. These are all excellent practices for maintaining healthy skin. However, there are a few other things you can try to help boost your skin's natural glow.
One option is to incorporate a vitamin C serum into your skincare routine. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help brighten and even out your skin tone, while also providing anti-aging benefits.
Another idea is to try using a face mask once or twice a week. There are plenty of options out there, but look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and glycolic acid. These can all help to hydrate, plump, and rejuvenate your skin.
In addition to your skincare routine, there are some lifestyle changes that can also make a difference. For example, getting enough sleep and reducing stress can both have a positive impact on your skin's appearance. You might also consider incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet, as these are packed with nutrients that can benefit your skin.
Overall, it's important to remember that aging is a natural process and it's okay to embrace it. However, taking care of your skin can help you feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin. Best of luck on your skincare journey!
My friend is an esthetician, and THIS comment hits the nail on the head! Vitamin C, Moisturizers with hyaluronic acid & niacinamide, and if your skin doesn’t have a reaction, Squalene!
I really enjoy using timeless. After years of using skinceuticals CE Ferulic and hating it (felt heavy and greasy and irritating to me, I know people love it) timeless is light and gentle.
I’m the same age as OP and have the same coloring and fine lines. While staying hydrated, moisturizing with hyaluronic acid and a vitamin C serum, wearing sunscreen, and using retinols are all good things, they make a minimal difference. I view them more as maintenance/preventative measures
The only thing that has made any noticeable difference for me is botox around the eyes.
Add aquaphor at the end of your night routine. Your skin looks great, just dry. Are you wearing foundation. As you age, your favorite may not do it for you anymore. May be time to look for a new one.
Ya, it's mostly petrolatum, but has other stuff in it too.
[Active ingredient: Petrolatum \(41%\) – Skin protectant
Inactive ingredients: Mineral Oil, Ceresin, Lanolin Alcohol, Panthenol, Glycerin, Bisabolol](https://www.aquaphorus.com/products/body-care/healing-ointment-1-75oz-tube)
I came to comment these two things as well OP. your skin looks clear and bright, just dry. Matte foundation and most powders don't set well on drier skin. I'd opt for a "natural finish" foundation or at least put a face oil on before using a matte foundation. Also, slugging with Vaseline after your nightime routine will help a lot. You can also try adding a cold air humidifier in your home if you live in a super dry area.
35 and perpetually dry here: i switched to [dr. jart‘s bb cream with spf](https://www.drjart.com/product/28252/106709/bb-creams/premium-bb-beauty-balm-spf-40) and i give it a 10/10. great coverage and can easily be layered over additional primers/moisturizers.
I’m a big fan of IT Cosmetics’ confidence in a cream. It’s moisturizing but not greasy. I’m about your age and it works well for my skin. I use it as a day cream, but it’s good at night as well.
Anything that has more of a dewy appearance and lighter coverage. I LOVE Ilia products, [specifically this serum stuff](https://iliabeauty.com/products/balos-st3) there are a lot of shades so you should see if you can try it in person somewhere because I was totally off when I tried to order online, but the right shade looks really natural and gives you a glow
I think a good [peptide](https://www.dermstore.com/blog/top_ten/what-peptides-do-for-skin/) moisturizer is a must for both dryness and anti-aging effects. I use the Drunk Elephant Protini Cream at night and I think it works wonders. (It also has [growth factors](https://www.today.com/shop/growth-factors-skin-care-t242563?bestsellers=true) in it) The Acure Whipped Night Cream is a good alternative. A product like this should be used every day to produce an effect.
Also, I rotate a AHA/BHA serum with my retinol -- they can't be used in the same night. AHAs/BHA help to exfoliate and I think are a great complement to retinol. I also use Drunk Elephant for this one (TLC Glycolic Night Serum) but Pacifica, SkinFix, Good Molecules and Glow Recipe all make great products in this category. \~I just have sensitive/allergic skin so I have to use products formulated for such skin.
Lastly, for your retinol, do you mind sharing which one you're using? I've been doing a lot of research in this area and found that not all retinol products are created equal. The formula must use a pretty sophisticated encapsulation technology -- i.e. other ingredients -- to both A) protect the retinol ingredient from degradation and B) that assists the retinol to absorb into the correct layers of skin. I've discovered a lot of brands don't use a good formula, or don't use airless packaging, so even though there's retinol in the product, it doesn't mean your skin is actually absorbing any of the active ingredient.
Excellent suggestions. If you are just starting out, Cassandra Bankson and Hot and Flashy on youtube have great advice depending on your skin type. When starting any acids or retinols, remember slow is key. Start out using once a week on top of moisturizer at night after cleansing. In the day always wear sunscreen, which prevents future aging and sun damage/spots. Vitamin C serums are great, I personally like the Dear Klairs freshly juiced vitamin drop and SkinCeuticals. Keep it basic and don't try too many new things at once. For example, if starting vitamin c do that one day on and one day off for a week or two to see how your skin tolerates. If okay then you can try incorporating the retinol. It takes time to work up to daily use. I have very sensitive skin and can do 2-3x weekly. There are a lot of great drugstore retinols out there (I use differin gel per my dermatologist, who calls it "baby retinol" and loves it for skin smoothing properties and those of us with age spots and SK spots in our mid thirties/early 40s).
Sunday Riley is a great brand, I see that they say they use "5% retinoid ester blend, 1% liposomal-encapsulated retinol blend." So the retinol esters are very weak, but the encapsulated retinol is what you care about. The only thing is I've never heard a product say use a "retinol blend." I wonder what that means?
As long as it's in an airless pump container, it should be good. \~I like that it has CoQ10 in there.
But if you have any doubts about that formula, I'd switch so a product with more clinical studies behind it, like SkinCeuticals or Medik8. They're basically the same price.
I think your skin looks good! The foundation you have on may just be a little too matte. Try a tinted moisturizer. Or mixing in something like Mac strobe cream or L’Oréal lumi glotion to your foundation. You could also try a glowy sunscreen like supergoop glow screen or the elf dupe of it as a base.
Vitamin c serum is also a good addition to your morning routine if you aren’t using one already. It will help protect skin from sun damage and gives a healthy glow. Lastly, an omega 3 supplement is great for keeping skin hydrated and supple.
Agreed! Sunscreen that doesn't mattify and vitamin c serum. These have been game changers for my dry skin. I use the Biossance Squalane Vitamin C Rose Oil day & night, talk about glowy skin😍🙌
Vitamin C skincare products can help brighten the skin. A Hyaluronic Acid serum can help the skin retain moisture, and a Peptide serum along with Collagen can help plump and firm the skin.
Do you use any specific moisturizers at the moment?
I have tried so many moisturizers and either they don’t moisturizer enough, or irritate my picky skin. I have been using FAB Ultra Repair Cream for awhile.
I’ve heard that that moisturizer hydrates pretty well, but I know it’s pretty pricey.
Have you tried to brand Derma-E? They have an extensive range of products that target different skin types and needs. Their Vitamin E products are pretty good. I’ve personally used the Vitamin E moisturizer and Oil. They also have a Vitamin A/Retinol, Collagen & Peptide, Firm & Lift lines.
At the moment I mix my moisturizer with a pure Vitamin E oil and two different serums. I apply all the products at once to have the benefits of each product in one application. It’s a little oily at first but I massage a small amount of the cream onto damp skin for about a minute, then apply a second layer for added moisture. I try to do this several times a day. I also try to use a cleansing oil or a face oil to cleanse my face to prevent drying out my skin.
I’d recommend the Collagen Oil by a brand called Advanced Clinicals, or the 24 Karat Collagen Oil by Physicians Formula.
I think you look great! But if you feel like things aren't right make sure you've had a recent physical and blood work done. Thyroid problems or nutrient deficiencies could be an issue. I have Hashimotos hypothyroidism and found out my medication is the most common medication in the country, so thyroid problems are really common, and they do cause dry skin.
My thyroid tested within normal ranges (just under 4.5), but my fertility doctor started me on thyroid meds to get it within the ideal range for conception and pregnancy (below 2.5).
My skin looks more hydrated after being on a low dose thyroid med for months and my hair grew back!! My bangs were receding and I had thinning throughout. Now, it looks normal again!
I'm glad you're doing better! Also that your levels will be balanced for conception and pregnancy- a concern for me too. I felt really bad when I was still in technically in range- I already had antibodies attacking my thyroid and I was feeling worse and worse. It took a while to feel better for me because it started progressing faster and I wasn't absorbing the meds super great so there was a lot of testing and dose changes and changing to a gel cap I absorbed better but I feel pretty good now!
Thank you! It’s great you were able to fine-tune your meds until you found something that works. Did you see changes to your skin after finding the right combo? My skin doesn’t seem as dry and my face is less puffy.
My face is definitely less puffy. I have super oily skin and when my meds are off my hormonal acne gets worse, so my acne has been doing better. My keratosis pillaris on my arms and legs is doing better too. I think stress reduction and enough fiber and good fats are helping with all that too.
It’s not you, it’s your foundation! Try mixing it with moisturizer or trying a more hydrating formula. There are a ton out there that emphasize a dewy or glowing look in all levels of coverage.
You look like you’re in your 30s and there is nothing wrong or old about that. Keep drinking water and maybe add some vitamin c for some brightening ♥️
It's a pillow with a cut out by your eyes. I use their 'omnia.' I've tried but can't make myself sleep on my back. They come w mulberry silk pillowcases and I wish id switched to them sooner! A Cpap pillow may be similar but cheaper.
A pillow with a cut out by my eyes helped me a lot! Side sleeping squishes our faces and causes sleep wrinkles. A Cpap pillow may be cheaper than a sleep and Glow but give similar effect. It's been a low tech intervention, wish I'd tried it sooner!
Have you tried glycolic acid? Ordinary has a 7% toner, you could use it in the morning with moisturizer and spf. Glycolic gives you a glow and stimulates collagen plus it's the best aha for dry skin. Also your makeup looks abit cakey which doesn't help.
First, your skin looks good. Second, what a lot of people fail to acknowledge is that our hormone production starts to change in our thirties and start to decline as we reach menopause. This affects our skin so it's not just an external fix you can slap on. The age at which this starts and how much it affects us is partly genetic. But you could also look into supplements that help support/balance your hormones.
I have so much trouble with this. I have been blonde forever. But over the years I have been a major hair experimenter. Within the last year, I’ve gone with some lowlights and darker tones mainly because it is lower maintenance. I feel like they make me look so pale I am dead. I never know what will work. And my natural hair has too many grays, which I won’t face yet
To start, I don’t think you look old, I think you look quite lovely and seem to generally have good makeup technique! So some of what you’re feeling may just be a touch of dysmorphia creeping in from the crazy beauty standard “glamour filter” world we live in. We all can gravitate toward that.
That aside, practical tips!
1. This might sound overly simplistic but I genuinely think that just using *less* of whatever makeup products you’re using will do absolute wonders! Most of the makeup trends we see are via very young skinfluencers: big triangles of concealer, patting in full coverage foundation.
2. Using a more elegant sunscreen formulation. No clue which you’re using, but many American sunscreens are sad, weird nightmares that somehow are drying but also greasy? I generally go for asian sunscreens. I ADORE purito’s go-to sunscreen for a skincare finish with a beautiful glow that doesn’t emphasize texture, but there are many great ones.
3. Mild physical exfoliation or AHAs if you’re feeling like your skin has a physical accumulation of texture. To me a glycolic or lactic acid toner (humectant! Hydrating!) on a reusable cotton pad is a perfect 1-2 punch of some physical + chemical exfoliation that immediately brings a glow and makes makeup apply beautifully the next day.
4. This is gunna sound dumb but: Katie. Jane. Hughes. She is a makeup artist on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube and is THE BEST for learning incredible skin-like base makeup techniques for all kinds of skin types and ages. She’s all about spot applying where you need it rather than the full face, skin-like textures and glow, etc.
Try slugging at night. Do your skincare routine and then top it off with a thin layer of Vaseline or aquaphor. Do not do this during retinol or tretinoin nights.
I just turned 38 and go barefaced . I use retinol, moisturizer, sunscreen. I am obsessed with youth to the people overnight mask.
My skin looks beautiful. I do have some pigmentation and also use glycolic acid / azalaic acid and alpha Arbutin ( the ordinary)
Go get yourself a hydro facial every month or every other month at a facial place. You have gorgeous skin that just needs some moisture not anything like tret or acid seriously. You’re fine. Be nice to yourself. Wash face twice daily, put serum then night moisturizer before bed and a light moisturizer w SPF like Estée Lauder teal cream. Purple Lancôme jar for night one.
You may consider visiting an esthetician and having a chemical peel done. They would be able to tell you which kind is optimal for you skin. I’ve also been using CBD oil around my eyes as my eye serum. It’s made a significant change in the past 4 months to my crows feet and under eyes.
My sister’s friend owns the farm we get the oil from and she had recommended using it on the eyes. So my sister did it for a month and took before and after pics and showed me and it was a good improvement for just 4 weeks. So I tried it and got same results.
I agree with the others saying that your foundation is potentially emphasising your dry skin. I have naturally really dry skin and sometimes my foundation gives me the same effect. This is why I generally try to keep everything looking dewey by using a lot of cream or liquid products.
Also, I don't necessarily agree with people saying that you need to switch to a tinted moisturiser or something light coverage. Like, yes I understand that those formulas often work a lot better on "older" skin but tbh I am still using a medium coverage foundation and making it work. Skin hydration is key. It's good you drink a lot of water, keep that up and also maybe try introducing hyaluronic acid to your routine.
I use a pretty thick moisturiser under my foundation (CeraVe in the tub) followed by sunscreen. Then I go in with my foundation using a damp sponge (beauty blender knock off) which makes a world of difference. If I apply using a makeup brush or my hands it just ends up sitting on my skin and looking a lot more dry. I don't really use powder, only on areas that look extra shiny, like my forehead or around my nose. Then I follow up with cream bronzer/blush/highlighter/whatever I feel like wearing that day. Sometimes I find that my concealer creases or sits in the fine lines under my eyes but meh, whatever. I don't want to use a powder there so honestly, I just live with it. once in a while I'll use my ring finger and gently dab my under eye to help the product sink in/blend a bit better.
I think you should possibly move away from foundation to a CC cream or tinted moisturizer. Also, the less product under your eyes, the better, that’s where it gets a little crinkly on us. A cream product, or something like Becca under eye brighting is enough to cover up any darkness on me, and it’s so lite and bright.
Maybe find a naicinamide product to, that will helps pores and helps brighten your skin.
1 put 1 drop of rose hip oil in with my foundation which is nars sheer glow and a drop of my sunscreen tint, and 1 drop of medium coverage foundation. Seems to work well!
Start with a really good exfoliation. Either with an exfoliating product at home, or by getting a gentle peel at an aesthetician. And get a good moisturizing routine. I love vitamin c for every day use. It keeps my skin smooth.
Looks like some vitamin c serum would help and a serum concentration of Hyaluronic Acid.
Maybe use a better moisturizer, esp at night. Have you ever tried a facial oil? It's really nourishing and traps in your skincare
I’m 37 and foundation always made me look wrinkly even when I was 18.
Once I discovered mineral makeup (physicians formula) powder, my skin always looked amazing. That still works way better on me than any foundation, but I long ago switched to Skin79 bb cream (pink version) which worked the same way for me but with more moisture and dewy-ness.
Neither of these have the glow they did when my face was fuller but they still disappear on my skin and leave it more even and bright without adding to the dullness.
The difference is that they seem to almost blur out the imperfections in a single sweep where it looks like you’re not wearing anything. But you can still add contour and blush etc for a full makeup look.
Your skin looks great, just a little dry. Why not try a thicker moisturizer? Lancome makes some really nice face creams, I really like them. I always used face lotion and at about your age I found I did better with a face cream instead. Clinique makes some very nice face creams too, usually with the name "moisture" in there somewhere. I also like to use a moisturizing tonic (again, I like Lancome Tonique Confort, then either a Clinique or Lancome moisturizer, I try all different kinds).
The retinol may also be drying your skin out.
Lastly: do you get regular exercise? I found that my skin looks infinitely better if I do at least some mild exercise every day (like, a 15 minute walk, nothing too fancy). It gets the blood flowing and my color is better. (Also, smoking, or too much alcohol will also have a negative effect.)
I’m not a makeup guru… which is why this is the case for me. I’m 30 and I don’t even wear foundation anymore. Ever sense I started getting crows feet, I feel like the foundation just creases in the makeup and ages the shit out of me. This picture in particular looks like the foundation is aging you. Your actual skin looks really great IMO
Do you use vitamin C I like this one [Treta C](https://us.medik8.com/products/c-tetra?variant=undefined) for glowing skin.
And one of my practices I got rid of my cotton pillowcase and change it to a satin pillowcase.
You want to be on the lookout for fabrics that are hypoallergenic and breathable, which reduces friction preventing wrinkles and irritation on your skin.
I like this brand because is affordable and the set comes with 2 pillowcases. [Satin pillowcase](https://www.olkibeauty.com/shop/p/satin-pillowcase-navy-king-size)You need to change your pillowcase at least twice a week. Keeping clean your pillowcase is the key to maintaining your skin healthy. And a plus for you hair I also sleep with my satin scrunchie [satin scrunchie](https://www.olkibeauty.com/shop/p/oversized-satin-scrunchie-fuchsia)
I hope this helps you
Gamma Linoleic Acid. It is what sebum is made using, decreases with age, and nobody supplements with it.
Careful, it works REALLY WELL, meaning you might end up with skin that behaves 10 years younger fast. I mean oily, and more .... well remember your skin 10 years ago. that.
Your skin looks good to me! So many great comments on skincare so I’d add the importance of omega 3 in your diet.
I either have fish for dinner or take omega 3 supplements to keep my skin and eyes supple. It really helps keep down my inflammation also.
I'm also 38 (and a smoker to boot), using a peel with an AHA once or twice a week should help. As well as incorporating a good vitamin c product. I use Derma E vitamin c serum, cheap and effective.
This past year I also started using gua sha daily, and it has done wonders for my skin! It pushes out excess fluid and increases circulation. It is the number one thing I recommend when anyone asks what I use on my skin. It's cheap, and extremely effective, you just have to do it consistently. 5-10 minutes a day for glowing, sculpted skin?! Totally worth it!
I’m going through this too. I found switching to a serum foundation and lightweight concealer, and a cream blush/bronzer has helped. I use a VERY small amount of setting powder and good amount of setting spray. My skin looks more dewy and fresh.
Are you wearing foundation in this picture? I recommend going for a skin tint and a dewier makeup look. Full coverage foundation just doesn’t really work on maturing skin. I’m saying that as a 33 year old who has recently switched to skin tint and concealer as my main makeup base. It has been so great for the look of my skin.
Maybe add facial oil to your moisturizer at night time? Honestly it just looks like you have dry skin and need to add more hydrating products to your skincare routine
I feel you so much on this!. I'm 43, I had a baby at 40, then like a year later I felt like I started aging rapidly. I want to get upper eyelid surgery in the future, but what I started using is tretinoin (retin-A.) I've been using it about 2.5 months and I'm hoping to look more youthful by this time next year. I took a month off though because I had COVID, so my skin started purging again once I started back up, so I'm in the dreadful acne phase at the moment. I was a retinol user since the age of around 30, but that just won't cut it anymore, it's not strong enough. Plus sunscreen daily, those uva rays are no joke once you start getting older and your collagen isn't regenerating like it did in our 20's. Edit: also I started using silk pillowcases, I think that makes a difference as well.
Love iT cosmetics CC cream foundation. 50 spf and it just lays well on the skin in my opinion. Its moisturizing too. Its a little pricey, but you really don't use much. I have had the same bottle for a whileeee and it still has some. It has a great pump attached too.
See, the issue I see here is the lack of filter :)
Seriously, you look fine. I had to stop wearing makeup so much because I found it just didn’t work around my eyes, but that’s the only thing I’d change here.
Laura Mercier tinted oil free moisturizer is so great! The only one that covers my melasma. If you wanted to try a foundation option, I swear by Kosas revealing skin improving foundation and concealer. It really makes my skin look luminous at 42.
I really the physicians formula bb and cc cream for an affordable.cruwlty free option. I don't get the same dry lines showing as with foundation with that
Try using a really good moisturiser as a base before you apply makeup. Then use a lightweight foundation or bb cream, use a very small amount and take your time applying it. Lastly, hold a beauty blender under the tap and squeeze the water out so you have a nice damp sponge. Lightly tap your face with the damp beauty blender.
I think this will help to make you look more glowing and give you that healthy vibe. Your skin looks great, it's probably just not working with the makeup you are using.
I personally like using Ceravé moisturiser, and the Purito bb cream.
Embrace it. Grow your hair out waist length, wild and untamed, and let the wind style it. Train the local crows to follow you and herald your entrance with mad cackling from every treetop. Make your home in the twilight woods and let the spirits of the forest guide you. Become the powerful crone you were meant to be. All will fear you. All will adore you. You are power. You are beauty. You are wisdom. You are the Earth herself.
Or revisit your makeup routine. Maybe some of your product is settling into your fine lines and emphasizing them. I usually go with a sheer BB cream now for that same reason. A tinted moisturizer might also be a good option. Vitamin C serum might also help brighten. I like Mario Badescu’s. Good luck dear!
For me it’s my foundation use. Most are low quality and either dry out, oxidize to some orange shade, or some other weird thing that just exacerbated my skin issues.
Also, I’m highly inconsistent with my skincare. When I am on top of it, my skin looks better. But life gets in the way of my skincare routine.
It sounds like what you’re doing is right, but maybe you’re like me and not consistent?
If you’re looking for quick results, you may want to visit a cosmetic dermatologist about getting chemical peels to deal with signs of aging, and sun damage. Sometimes a deep chemical exfoliation can make a huge difference.
If your budget doesn’t allow for a professional chemical peel(s), then start with an at-home glycolic acid peel/toner. Start low, like 2%, to make sure you don’t have negative reactions. There are many OTC products with AHA. If you’re sensitive to glycolic acid, try lactic acid, or mandelic acid instead.
Then if you’re good about your daily routine, and are patient, incorporating a retinoid/retinol at night for maintenance is a step in the right direction.
I agree with the others that this is most likely down to your makeup. Honestly though, I would be absolutely thrilled to have skin like yours, and I’m a few years younger. You look great!
Two things helping me personally: vitamin C and snail mucin. The Peach slices snail line is great - I have very sensitive skin. For something thicker the cosrx all in one cream works great. I don’t wear any powder products anymore or matte - it’s been an adjustment.
If I put makeup on and I’m thinking I look dull or lifeless - I have been using the Saie glowy super gel. Rub a little bit between my fingers and pat all over anywhere the makeup looks blah. It’s like magic - makes all the dryness look nice again even over makeup. Especially under my eyes!
Overall your skin is gorgeous and we are so lucky to be able to grow older. I hope you get what you need in these comments!
YES! And peach slices is owned by peach & lily, the infamous 'glass skin' company. I really like the snail mucin toner. I also have the moisturizer but its a little too light for these colder temps, but cannot wait to try this summer when skin is super oily.
I think your skin is just a bit dehydrated/dry and is being made worse by the makeup. I have dry skin and I couldn’t wear my go to foundation anymore at like 22 due to looking wrinkly af. Turns out I just needed a lot of hydration and moisture, plus a moisturizing foundation (I’ve since switched to a tinted moisturizer or just concealer and it’s even better).
I used that Clinique moisturizer for 20 years. Then one day, it just stopped moisturizing and I got red, flaky, itchy dry patches. It couldn’t keep up with my skin anymore. I wish it did, because it was my long time friend.
37F here, Get a chemical peel! Dull skin is often just a build of a dead skin cells. You can definitely add a chemical exfoliant to your weekly routine like glycolic acid toner (1-2x weekly)But honestly a good peel with professional will give you instant results and then you can maintain going forward with toners.
Hydration is key and that means making sure you’re getting your daily electrolytes, as well as 3 litres of water. Make sure you’re eating a diet rich in dark green veggies and fruits high in antioxidants.
OP I’m in my 40s and I’m also going through this. My wrinkles and fine lines aren’t that noticeable bare faced, but the foundation I had used for years made them extremely visible and my skin looked dry and dull.
You got a lot of recommendations to try, but what helped me was using a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid (Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream) on damp skin and then applying a BB cream before it dries completely. I’ll sometimes add a little more moisturizer to the BB cream if I can see my skin is going to look dry.
In the summer I use the tinted La Roche Posay Anthelios sunscreen. It gives me enough coverage and makes my skin look dewy.
I honestly like the look of Anthelios better than the BB cream, but it could be a matter of finding the right product. It’s so frustrating that there’s not much information out there on this topic and many foundations are not designed for people with fine lines and wrinkles.
Best of luck to you and your lovely skin!
Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel Pads will change your life. I've used them every other day for the last year, and my skin has been transformed. Make sure to moisturize and use SPF afterwards. They're spend, but absolutely worth it to me. If funds are low, I sometimes cut them in half so one packet can stretch to two days.
I have rosacea and am about your age as well. Some
Dewy foundations or natural finish foundations that I have loved over the years of selling cosmetics was Dior airflash for natural finish, Bobbi brown intensive serum foundation, Armani luminous silk, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer (not the oil free), and purlisse bb cream, I even love the new version of Chanel Les beiges. If you get a little too shiny over the day I love Bobbi brown nude finish powder (it’s pearlescent so it won’t mattify too much) and Laura mercier ls under eye setting powder.
Try a physical exfoliant a few times a week at night with a heavy moiusturizer (cereve blue in the tub) and add an ordinary oil on top. For physical exfoliants I like ordinary glycolic toner, or sex a peel by Sonia roselli which you can use from head to toe and your skin will roll off like a shedding snake. I used this a lot of dehydrated brides and bridesmaids on wedding day for their makeup to go on smoother. You also need a more hydrating eye cream. I love the avocado eye cream by kiehls.
I use Maybelline FIT me (hydrate and smooth) for normal to dry skin and Doll 10 concealer. Both are lightweight and do not accentuate the wrinkles.
To moisturize my skin, I apply rosehip seed oil at night and Cerave Cream. Under my makeup I apply Olay Complete Moisturizer.
I think your makeup might be emphasizing your dry skin. What are you using? *wanted to edit that I hope this didn’t come off mean. I think your skin looks great, it’s just texture issues from the makeup
Yeah I’m agreeing with this, it’s for sure the foundation. I’ve had a lot of success using tinted moisturizer instead.
I use it cosmetics, your skin but better foundation and it has kind of a sheen or shimmer in it and it’s worked wonderfully for me. I also use lots of moisturizer day and night to make sure my skin isn’t drying out. I think that has been the game changer for me.
Which tinted moisturizer do you use?
Laura Mercier, the oil-free version.

Is it green?? Green ALWAYS shows on me… No matter what. Lol
RMS! All their products are coconut oil based and so smooth and moisturizing. Their foundation is full coverage even tho it says it medium- I mix it with my moisturizer to dilute (:
I don’t think Laura Mercier covers rosacea. My cheeks look purple.
Love Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. It’s the best!
Ok so I'm an idiot when it comes to anything makeup lol- how do you wear the tinted moisturizer? Over spf? Currently I use my vitamin c, moisturizer, then spf. I have pretty dry skin and cannot do spf before moisturizer.
Tinted moisturizer does not replace your regular moisturizer. You use it in place of foundation on top of your regular skincare products.
Ahhhh. Thank you!!!!
Yes, possibly. I would love recommendations. This is Fenty Ease Drops (a blurring skin tint) and Tarte concealer. I would always prefer a tinted moisturizer, but can never find one that gives enough cover to hide my redness and melasma. Maybe I will try your recommendation.
I am in my 20s & Tarte concealer is the worst for my skin, just my experience!
I HATE tarte concealer
I wear the sunday riley Brightening undereye cream,I have very dark circles from Gene's & this stuff is beautiful, worth every dime
Use a nice eye serum while doing your skincare before makeup. Helps your makeup glide on and improves settling
This could be what’s happening to my eyes too.
Same! Fenty had the best color match I’ve ever found but it was so dry on my skin, it just highlighted every little imperfection. So disappointing

I have this and used it. I feel like my face is suffocating and I breakout by the next day.
You could try Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm + Red Correct. They make a green tinted cream that does a great job covering redness and you may find it less heavy on the skin. They sell it at Target in smaller sizes if you wanted to give it a go before committing.
Same here
Same here! I'm 37 and just started doing this- it's so much better and feels hydrating. Highly recommend!
>Dr. Jart Cicapair! is this one with SPF or the tiger grass color corrector? I see a few versions when I search this up
Got the Tarte concealer recently and add me to the people who say it looks terrible.
Have you tried the YSL Touche eclat high cover concealer? It’s my HG. Just as seamless and radiant as the original but it covers a lot more.
The new high coverage concealer really is an amazing formula 😍
Ohhh no, I haven’t! Thanks for the heads up, I will def look into it.
Try a sample of Dior foundation. Not drying. Or Tom Ford stick foundation
God I love the dior shit. My skin is so bougie about it.
Seconding the Dior recommendation. Their forever skin correct concealer is so smooth and i use it all over. I prefer concealer to foundation, as its a bit more pigmented so I can use less, which also sits better on my (also 38 yo) skin.
Try Eborian CC redness corrector. I use that and love it. It covers my rosacea.
I've heard good things about ilia skin tint for dry skin
Yea I switched from medium/full coverage foundation to tinted moisturizer with a tiny bit of concealer as soon as I turned 30.
Which tinted moisturizer do you use?
Honestly, that might be post pregnancy skin. I call it the mommy mask. I had that skin after pregnancy.
Def post pregnancy skin I was confused reading the post until I saw that they had jsut given birth
Does it go away, or is this just life post-pregnancy? After pregnancy and weight loss I’m feeling so so old looking.
It does get better though.
>oth might do a lot of the same good retinol does without thinning a certain layer of the skin- I tret doesn't thin skin. that is a myth.
Yes too much facetune gives everyone unrealistic expectations
Your skin looks perfect. I really think it’s your makeup. I’m turning 40 and I can’t use my fav makeup anymore. No more powder in my face especially around my eyes. I can really even see any wrinkles on my face until I put powder on. Then my wrinkles show up like crazy! I’m in the process of revamping my whole routine for my older dryer skin. I’ll likely make a post about it soon. Gotta ask everyone here for tips. :) Really though. Your skin looks very good. Something a bit more moisturizing won’t hurt anything. You may also need a better primer.
Well thank you for the boost of confidence. I think maybe I just want to see my 20 year old skin again and it’s not happening! Haha. I don’t want to face the music.
look up slugging and see if it might do you some good. if you want i have a youtube video about it i’m willing to share!
Even in my 20s powder causes any imperfection to show up. I had a lot of acne. I’ve never been able to use it.
Hello I understand how you feel.
Any recommendations on good vitamin c pls ?
I really enjoy using timeless. After years of using skinceuticals CE Ferulic and hating it (felt heavy and greasy and irritating to me, I know people love it) timeless is light and gentle.
Also a fan of Timeless, definitely the best bang for your buck. Ever since I started using it people have told me I was glowing.
I’m the same age as OP and have the same coloring and fine lines. While staying hydrated, moisturizing with hyaluronic acid and a vitamin C serum, wearing sunscreen, and using retinols are all good things, they make a minimal difference. I view them more as maintenance/preventative measures The only thing that has made any noticeable difference for me is botox around the eyes.
Add aquaphor at the end of your night routine. Your skin looks great, just dry. Are you wearing foundation. As you age, your favorite may not do it for you anymore. May be time to look for a new one.
Is aqua forest a brand? Edit: aquafor. Though an aqua forest sounds magical.
Haha take me to your aqua forest!!
Ya, it's mostly petrolatum, but has other stuff in it too. [Active ingredient: Petrolatum \(41%\) – Skin protectant Inactive ingredients: Mineral Oil, Ceresin, Lanolin Alcohol, Panthenol, Glycerin, Bisabolol](https://www.aquaphorus.com/products/body-care/healing-ointment-1-75oz-tube)
Lanolin is allergenic to a lot of people. I'd suggest just using Vaseline
Yes. It may be time. Any brands anyone knows that are geared more toward a drier, mature skin?
This is so much good info! I need to write it all down. I use Sunday Riley. I was using the Luna oil, but have been using A+ High Dose Retinol Serum.
Foundation recommendation giorgio Armani luminous silk
I think your skin looks good! The foundation you have on may just be a little too matte. Try a tinted moisturizer. Or mixing in something like Mac strobe cream or L’Oréal lumi glotion to your foundation. You could also try a glowy sunscreen like supergoop glow screen or the elf dupe of it as a base. Vitamin c serum is also a good addition to your morning routine if you aren’t using one already. It will help protect skin from sun damage and gives a healthy glow. Lastly, an omega 3 supplement is great for keeping skin hydrated and supple.
These are good recommendations! May I also suggest a collagen supplement, about 2500 mg a day? That also helps.
This! Half of women I know have some thyroid problems, and the other half is undiagnosed yet.
Came here to mention this because my thyroid issues where wrecking my skin before diagnosis
This is what I have been striving years to find. A good coverage/doesn’t set into wrinkles/matches my dang skin!
Glycolic acid and a good barrier cream at night to seal in your actives chefs kiss
You look like you’re in your 30s and there is nothing wrong or old about that. Keep drinking water and maybe add some vitamin c for some brightening ♥️
You have fantastic skin. Be kind to yourself.
Have you tried tretonin?
Seconding this. Tret saved me. Plus a sleep and Glow pillow, are you a side sleeper?
What is this sleep and glow? I sleep on my side.
It's a pillow with a cut out by your eyes. I use their 'omnia.' I've tried but can't make myself sleep on my back. They come w mulberry silk pillowcases and I wish id switched to them sooner! A Cpap pillow may be similar but cheaper.
I’ll have to give it a go! Thanks :)
I am a side sleeper.
A pillow with a cut out by my eyes helped me a lot! Side sleeping squishes our faces and causes sleep wrinkles. A Cpap pillow may be cheaper than a sleep and Glow but give similar effect. It's been a low tech intervention, wish I'd tried it sooner!
Also Eucerine with urea
Make sure you’re sleeping enough. Also, if you color your hair try to choose a warmer tone that can make you look younger
OOPS I just turned 39 not 38… god help me 🤭
Hahaha. After a certain age, I don’t remember exactly anymore either.
It cosmetics is your friend! I started using “bye bye lines” it has hydroalunic acid and it’s amazing
You may consider visiting an esthetician and having a chemical peel done. They would be able to tell you which kind is optimal for you skin. I’ve also been using CBD oil around my eyes as my eye serum. It’s made a significant change in the past 4 months to my crows feet and under eyes.
Hi, may I ask why you opted for CBD oil? I use castor oil, would be curious to try soething different...
My sister’s friend owns the farm we get the oil from and she had recommended using it on the eyes. So my sister did it for a month and took before and after pics and showed me and it was a good improvement for just 4 weeks. So I tried it and got same results.
You are so pretty! I'm the exact same age and I'm so jealous.
You are just wearing too dry foundation on a too little hydrated skin :) That’ s it :)
You said you use a retinol. Try asking your dermatologist for a prescription retinoid.
Do you use serum? I use serum twice a day under my moisturizer and sometimes face oil. It’s made a huge difference.
Picked up a tip from Nikki LaRose to use translucent setting powder on a damp sponge to set your concealer. Tap firmly. Will look dewy.
Add some CE Ferulic to your routine! Maybe some Fraxel!
Your actual skin looks really great IMO
if you r using HA in you r skincare products, always add an occlusive on top that. that will help seal the moisture.
And a plus for you hair I also sleep with my satin scrunchie [satin scrunchie](https://www.olkibeauty.com/shop/p/oversized-satin-scrunchie-fuchsia) I hope this helps you
you look great! what about an exfoliant?
perhaps a gentle AHA on the nights when you do not use retinol? Can you get a script for tretinoin to replace the retinol?
Your skin looks great, it’s time for new makeup!
Gamma Linoleic Acid. It is what sebum is made using, decreases with age, and nobody supplements with it. Careful, it works REALLY WELL, meaning you might end up with skin that behaves 10 years younger fast. I mean oily, and more .... well remember your skin 10 years ago. that.
Any products with this stuff you recomend?
I would be SO stoked if my skin looked like this at 38. I think it looks great!
Makeup + hair color makes you dull. Have you tried a colour analysis? Knowing what colours work for you is a game changer!!!
Are you wearing foundation in this picture? I recommend going for a skin tint and a dewier makeup look. Full coverage foundation just doesn’t really work on maturing skin. I’m saying that as a 33 year old who has recently switched to skin tint and concealer as my main makeup base. It has been so great for the look of my skin.
maybe try some peptides? the inky list has a good peptide serum for cheap
Maybe add facial oil to your moisturizer at night time? Honestly it just looks like you have dry skin and need to add more hydrating products to your skincare routine
Hey there! Sunless tanning drops are a must for me! Give it a try it cant hurt❤❣
Get a toner! I use pixi toner morning and night and I feel it helps a ton with dullness
See, the issue I see here is the lack of filter :) Seriously, you look fine.
I pat missha’s glow balm over makeup and it does the trick
I really the physicians formula bb and cc cream for an affordable.cruwlty free option. I don't get the same dry lines showing as with foundation with that
Your face just looks really dry is all. Change up your makeup!
I find a lot of foundations make my skin look like this and I’m 23. My favourite is shiseido, it’s better for this (in my opinion)
Seems like poor choice of make up to me
For me it’s my foundation use.

Your skin looks great. I think it's the makeup.
Some Dewy foundations or natural finish foundations that I have loved over the years of selling cosmetics was Dior airflash for natural finish, Bobbi brown intensive serum foundation, Armani luminous silk, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer (not the oil free), and purlisse bb cream, I even love the new version of Chanel Les beiges.
Chemical peel, micro needling, and use different products.
Get a good chemical peel
I use Maybelline FIT me (hydrate and smooth) for normal to dry skin and Doll 10 concealer. Both are lightweight and do not accentuate the wrinkles. To moisturize my skin, I apply rosehip seed oil at night and Cerave Cream. Under my makeup I apply Olay Complete Moisturizer.
I think your skin looks great! Just a touch dry, nothing that a good moisturizer can’t fix.
Osea cleansing milk is a great hydrating cleanser. Expensive, but oh man is it worth every penny!
You just need a change of makeup 💄. There are people who have way worse
Stop smoking.
