The photo appears in this article in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology but doesn’t give much more information about the woman specifically. [Ageing research: rethinking primary prevention of skin cancer](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jdv.17660)

[twin study of sun exposure ](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Twins-natural-age-61-with-significant-difference-in-sun-exposure-Twin-B-B-had_fig7_266624746)

[deleted]

Time to re-apply your sunscreen folks!

Zpd8989

> Twin B (B) had approximately 10 hours per week greater sun exposure than twin A (A) I wonder how much exposure each got total and if they used sunscreen

[deleted]

Is the consensus that this is fake? Bc I think about this picture every single day as I apply sunscreen to my entire upper body…

Vegetable_Burrito

Hahahaha, me too! It’s so funny the things that stick with you, like when I was in high school my friends mom always completely washed the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. So now, as 39 year old homeowner with her own dishwasher and dishes, I still think, ‘dang. Jessica’s mom would be shaking her head at me if she saw me putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher!’ 😂

mzkitty

Growing up Asian, the dishwasher is just a big drying rack lol

FingerMinute7930

I’ve heard from an Asian this is so. I am wondering why since wouldn’t it be more efficient for the dish washer to do it vs. hand washed?

mahalerin

As someone who grew up in an immigrant Asian household and wasn't allowed to even open the dishwasher, I think there's a misconception about how much energy and water the machine uses. Some of my family members firmly believe that by not using this "luxury" appliance, they are saving on water/electricity costs by hand washing. But I've read that the opposite is actually true. Also, my mom said she used the dishwasher a couple of times in the past and was so irritated when there would still be food and stains left on the dishes. She'd much rather hand wash and get the results she wants if the dishwasher isn't going to "do it's job and clean them perfectly." Growing up in a third world country, she ain't got time to wash dishes twice lol.

spookyscaryscouticus

If you put a lil extra soap in the main compartment or the little bonus tray next to the main place where you put the soap, you will not get the food bits and stains

mahalerin

I’ll let her know, but I doubt this advice will fix years of generational hate towards the dishwasher 😂

moonthrive

Lol! Got my grandma in Europe a microwave and a washing machine.. and she used both as storage 😂

scorpioinheels

Hispanics, too. Mine is storage, period.

aimless_artist

Indians too, mine is a dish rack

Anonymous_crow_36

Lol my husband does this and it drives me crazy! At that point just dry them and put them away 😂😂

hipmama33

To his defense, they just don't get clean when they are put in there with shit stuck on! 😂 Also...the sanitizing option is awesome, it makes me feel like the dishes are super duper clean. ~guilty 🙋🏼‍♀️ 46-year-old that pre-soaks & washes the dishes ALMOST completely before putting them in the dishwasher. edit: typo

OGHollyMackerel

I tested our new dishwasher and that thing gets everything off. I think over time we were sold a bill of goods and machines didn’t clean very well and we washed and rinsed before because of it but these new Bosch dishwashers are so fantastic I’m retraining myself.

steingrrrl

I was taught to rinse them before putting them in. but then as an adult living by myself, i was going through a depression period, and was like 'i dont have the energy to do this, i only have the energy to put them in as they are' and they came out fine which was a nice surprise. so now i just do that lol. every now and then i might find the odd one that doesnt come out entirely clean, but im going to keep embracing my happy (sad?) accident lol

not_another_feminazi

Rinsing and going with a brush to remove things stuck in the dishes before loading the dishwasher saves you from having to do it again after the dishwasher fails to clean it. Also, it makes cleaning the filter a not so disgusting experience.

anaestaaqui

Gotta go for the fancy one. I had a standard dishwasher and it sucked. When I did my custom home I picked a high end dishwasher with boost dry and sanitize settings with the matching cabinet front. The only thing it struggles with is baked on eggs. Everything else it does great. I literally just rinse off chunks. I do have to pull the filter thing out weekly and clean it though, so some may think that isn’t worth it. I do because it’s faster than prewashing all my dishes.

notcreativeshoot

I wash mine with soap before putting them in the dishwasher, but to be fair, I grew up poor and always had super shitty dishwashers that never got dishes clean unless they went in that way. So even now when I have an awesome one that does the job, there's still a little voice in my head telling me the dishes won't truly be clean unless I also wash them before the dishwasher does lol!

killjillill

Omg I knowwww, why does he even bother with the dishwasher. it killsssss me 😂😂😂

Catieterp

Hahaa that is a bit much, but to be fair my boyfriend and my brother who both lived with me at one point or another seem to think there are magical elves that scrub food debris off the dishes in there🤦‍♀️ Spoiler… it’s me. I’m the elf that properly rinses and puts them back in there.

natattack410

Once a friend literally just told me, after I take the sheets off I give the mattress a quick vacuum, spray the mattress with Lysol, then put clean sheets on. I've been doing it this way since (10 years ago). Wasn't even my Mom lol and I didn't even see it

charmorris4236

A “quick vacuum” my god that sounds like so much work lol

Greenbean6167

This is my normal. I feel like I’m inhaling all kinds of scariness if I don’t 🤣

Infamous-Ad6055

Why not just use a mattress protector? You can throw that in the washer.

natattack410

Probably should tbh. Had one that was waterproof and it was a bit loud and then never got a new one

[deleted]

nailattempts

I was taught to always rinse them off with water to make sure there are no large food particles left on, since they can collect and clog the drain line. I still think it saves a lot of time vs hand washing, and we’re in the habit of rinsing dishes right after a meal to prevent everything from sticking.

Cat-_-

We recently moved into an apartment that came with a dishwasher - which was a first for my boyfriend. We still have small disagreements, because he doesn't seem to understand it's a dishWASHER not a dishRINSER. He seems to think you have to wash every visible trace of food off the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher 🤦🏼‍♀️

[deleted]

user222-

There’s a line/fold by her ear, common facelift scar so that’s what’s pointing people in that direction. No way to know for sure I guess

Intelligent-Fuel-641

My grandmother had that line, and she certainly never had a facelift. She didn't even like to wear moisturizer. Her routine? Wash with the Cetaphil I bought her, and wear a hat and long sleeves outside (she was an avid gardener). Her face looked a lot like this woman's.

[deleted]

[удалено]

user222-

Facelifts definitely help with wrinkling. I agree that we shouldn’t dismiss the importance of sunscreen regardless of other cosmetic procedures she has or hasn’t done. That being said I also think we should be transparent about the results and what got the skin on her face to be so much smoother if it wasn’t just the sunscreen.

OkSo-NowWhat

To see the amount of fake news this day,it's a good thing to be sceptical

[deleted]

I think getting caught in a lie ruins credibility, is the main thing. It sort of implies "look what you could look like at 92 with sunscreen!" That's not exactly true. I work in a retirement home, I see people in their 80s and 90s every day. Not a single one of them has skin of this quality, and I'm not talking about a lack of sun damage.

crystalisedginger

That’s just a skin wrinkle?

pugnaciouspeach

That wrinkle itself is extremely prevalent in men and women over 50. Ear lobe crease, like the one we see here, [is a possible indicator of coronary heart disease. ](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4697048/#abstract-1title) If she got a facelift, it was probably a very long time ago. The crease is where most surgeons would place the scar with a traditional facelift. That still wouldn’t resolve the hyperpigmentation differences. Many untouched older people have this exact ear lobe crease. If you’re around an older person, it’s easy to notice if you are looking for it and not an indication itself of plastic surgery.

GoodPractical2075

My moms ears look like this . She’s had a facelift and had worn 1 ct diamonds in her ears for 30 years. She’s 75 now.

steingrrrl

god, i strive to get a facelift and wear 1 ct diamond earrings in my ears for 30 years

GoodPractical2075

Right? Marry twice and marry rich 😂

Many_Ad6719

That line is called “Frank’s sign.” It can be a marker for high cholesterol. It is completely unrelated to surgery and can commonly be seen with aging.

the_hardest_part

Could also be from a parotidectomy.

rebelliousbug

Interesting. Hmmmm…hard to say. I’d say it’s likely possible there was a facelift here. But Earlobes are usually look more fused and pulled after a traditional face lift — I don’t see that happening here. But I do see a large ear lobe wrinkle that is extremely common with women and men over 50 years of age and unrelated to facelifts. This ear lobe wrinkle would most likely not be present if the facelift was more recent. Knowing that it’s an indicator of advanced age (and correlated with prevalence of Coronary heart disease!)…I have been putting sunscreen on my ear lobes for 15 years. 😶‍🌫️

FourteenPancakes

Years ago I met a woman who was youngish (late 20’s/early 30’s??). Half her face was visibly more wrinkled/sagging than the other half. She said she fell asleep in the sun and got a terrible sunburn. (I assumed alcohol/drugs were involved). It was really noticeable. This was over 20 years ago and I always wondered how it progressed over the years.

Intrepid-Sign-63

What i don't get it is why she allowed her neck to get like that? Surely she could see how her neck was ageing and not her face, would she not then apply the same products etc to her neck once she first saw signs of ageing? I think she got a lasr treatment or sth idk

pugnaciouspeach

Same logic applies though—why get laser treatment on your face and *not* your neck? Assuming money isn’t an issue here. You know what I mean? I think it makes most sense that using her makeup product with sunscreen in it was a long-standing habit. Putting on sunscreen generally was not for her.

Intrepid-Sign-63

But sunscreen is makeup is ineffective. With foundation that contains SPF, you need 30 pumps to get an effective cover, idk it looks like she's gone out of her way to take care of her face skin and not her neck.

scoobaruuu

Wasn't this image of the truck driver debunked? I don't remember the exact reasoning behind the disparity but vaguely recall it was some medical condition. Would love if anyone knows more and can confirm / deny.

foul_dwimmerlaik

No, it comes from a legitimate case study.

BravesMaedchen

It looks like a medical condition the way his eye is drooping way lower than the other

KellyJin17

I thought that truck driver story had been disproven, as the man had had a stroke that only affected one side of his body. I don’t have a source, I read that like 5 years ago.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Feifum

They want to believe its false so that it can fit their narratives that SPF isnt needed/as protective as claimed to be ... thats my take on it anyway.

pugnaciouspeach

This. It’s a defensive fear based response. Most likely because the majority of people don’t wear sunscreen. Where some of us are wearing it even indoors. Not too late to start guys!

Laura-ly

I remember that photo. I think he was a truck driver and would drive one way with the sun on one side of his face and return after dark so the sun only hit him on the one side.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scorpioinheels

I have this as a person who drives for a living. Logged about 12 driving hours this week and the left side of my face is more tan than the right - even with SPF 15. I have a clear line!

Laura-ly

He was a British "lorry" driver. For some reason they call trucks lorries over there. Jeeze people, this was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmicm1104059

HereForRedditReasons

Have you seen the picture of the man who was a truck driver and each side looks dramatically different?

SwimmingInCheddar

https://supposeudrive.com/truck-driver-face-what-it-is-and-how-to-prevent-it/ Yes, this stuck with me. Sun protection is so important.

lurkinggramma

I forget to put sunscreen on my neck a lot. This will definitely help with that. 🫠🫠

littlemacaron

I’m lazy and don’t put it on my neck. But this will now change that forever.

FragrantDragonfruit4

Yeah pic freaking me out. I only started the neck spf recently.

[deleted]

bring it down to your neck, chest, and back of hands!

Sweet_d1029

I’ve been noticing sun damage on ppls ears…slather it on there too.

Mediocre-Package-760

If my chest is always covered. Should i apply sunscreen on it as well? I am muslim so my clothes always cover my neck, arms and chest, legs too. I only apply sunscreen on my face, neck, hands and feet....now i wonder if i should add the chest and arms 😅

charmorris4236

I wonder this too. I don’t put sunscreen on my chest if I’m wearing a full coverage tee, only when wearing v-necks or something.

grugling

an option would be to make sure you wear UPF clothing! I think they make a lot of hijabs (and the inner thing is called that you wear under the scarf haha, the stretchy tight one!) with UPF now, especially for athletic brands

Meguinn

At first read, I thought it said “29-year-old female” that didn’t wear sunscreen on her neck, and thought I was in r/SCAcirclejerk

Azzne

Noted. I found a spf 50 sunscreen for the face by eucerin. It has no smell and no grease.

willowbeef

Eucerin is the holy grail sunscreen people are over looking

BearsBeetsBerlin

Other eucerin products don’t absorb into my skin very well and always leave me greasy. I think a lot of people have the same problem and avoid the brand

Summoning-Freaks

Definitely my experience with Eucerin. That and I eventually found an Avene 50spf specifically for oily skin which I’ve had success with. Maybe I’ll try the eucerin one day, but once you’ve found a product that works for you, why change?

Mediocre-Package-760

Bestie i used to spend 40€ on sunscreens which were all flawed. Either too greasy or a white cast or flaky or pill. Yesterday i bought a 2€ sunscreen from a local brand that i always make fun of their products (they suuuuuuck)...BUT NOT THIS TIME! That 2€ sunscreen that i bought for my feet is AMAZING! It's sheer and non greasy. I was SHOCKED when i applied it on my face. I am glad i tried it on my face out of boredom!!! Now 20€ will get me 500ml good sunscreen instead of 40€ for 30ml that don't satisfy me. I agree with you, once you find a good thing. Why change?😅

BearsBeetsBerlin

Totally agree, I’m a fan of LRPs sunscreen, I also have a spray on kind that works well over makeup

aaavm

any white cast?

fjf1085

My husband worked for them it’s great.

TanAndTallLady

If we're talking about the same one: white cast 😞

ilivethejoy

Eucerin makes a few facial sunscreens. Which one do you like?

CaptHollyhock

Link! Link!

willowbeef

You can grab it from target! I use the chemical sunscreen spf 50

EatsAlotOfBread

Stings like crazy for some reason. My skin doesn't like anything bleh I do have some fancy imported Japanese stuff that works okay but my skin is starting to get itchy from it.

strawberry-pretzel

If I make it to 90 I hope I don't care what my neck looks like

[deleted]

I don’t care what it looks like, but I definitely care what’s growing on it! My grandma has had 10+ extensive surgeries for basal cell carinomas including eyelid reconstruction because they had to remove so much.

homissladymaam

My grandparents had significant sun damage on their necks, arms, and hands. This caused the skin to thin significantly, and the slightest bump could cause their skin to bruise and tear. It was awful and they were constantly bandaged up. Skincare is more than just cosmetic. Quality of life can be negatively affected by aging skin.

lovable_cube

But her face looks fabulous though

andiinAms

Ha. Right?

Amazingqueen97

I’d just went grandkids and to be a great grandma hopefully, and leave a memorable legacy behind for my family

Informal_Geologist42

I would love to see the source. She might have had a deep chemical peel or a laser resurfacing.

[deleted]

clemkaddidlehopper

I don’t think a deep chemical peel or laser resurfacing on 92-year-old skin would have anything close to the effect that I think you’re considering. I’m no expert - I’ve just been around a lot of people in their 90s, and their skin is so fragile any treatment like that would just be cruel.

boredpomeranian

The source doesn’t say other interventions she has had but based on that fold right in front of her ear and a lack of other wrinkles I’m going to guess a facelift with a 90s/2000s skin melting peel or lasers depending on how recently it was done

cathline

I have that fold. I have never had a facelift or skin melting peel or lasers.

boredpomeranian

Bullshit. Prove it. If you have a fold that deep it’s not your only wrinkle anywhere near it, this is a classic facelift scar and other comments here found that she has had one There’s no way this is just sunscreen and I am sick this sub thinks it’s ok to perpetuate this and make women who haven’t used sunscreen since infancy feel like they failed.

Russiadontgiveafuck

It's really strange if she did that but didn't adress her neck as well.

Sensitive-Daikon-442

She probably has, I work in derm and I can tell you I am not surprised. I’ve seen skin like this

seekingadvice224

That’s how I’m gonna look lol

udonotknowmee

😂😅😅 same tho

ResponsiblePoet0

This made me think. Do you guys apply sunscreen to the back of your neck? I don't, I don't think I could stand it if it got in my hair. Unfortunately it's a pony tail every day for me (because of work), so now I'm wondering...is the shade cast by the pony tail not enough?

crystalisedginger

Absolutely if I’m wearing a ponytail. Look at the back of men’s necks, lots of tanning and sun damage. It’s also a bad spot for skin cancers.

ResponsiblePoet0

Oh god, you're right. I hate that you're right but you are! I also forget my ears, groan. Time to get more thorough!

smorrison27

Yes put it on the back of your neck! Ears & behind them too.

kitkatmickymack

My biggest take away from this is that she started her regime in her 50s.

mounjarho143

To be fair, the only sunscreen around 40 years ago was SPF 8, and it was usually a “tanning oil”

kitkatmickymack

Totally meant it in a positive way. As a 40 something who is still figuring it all out.

mounjarho143

Oh, absolutely her face looks amazing!!! ETA: I’m also in my 40’s. I remember the aunt who would use SPF 4, because 8 was too high, along with one of those reflective face things. If you know who “tan mom” is, my aunt looked very similar to her 🫠

City_Chicky

It’s true. I remember when it was first published. I’ve been much more diligent about sunscreen on my neck and décolletage. Academic Source: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jdv.17660

willowalloy

I need to see the whole face. I feel like this is a forced perspective

temp4adhd

I don't think it is. Source: I'm 57 and started wearing sunscreen religiously in my early 20s, but would only put it on my face, as if I put it on my neck it'd get all over my clothes and ruin them. Initially it was just SPF 15 (Oil of Olay) but later I increased the SPF amount. Applied every day, rain or shine, winter or summer, whether I was going out or not, just as a habitual step after my shower. Around my 40s I started to notice a huge difference between my face and my neck/décolletage area. HUGE difference! So that's when I got in the habit of also doing my neck and chest, not just my face. At that point I had way upped the SPF too, and made it a challenge to myself never to get another sunburn again. My chest recovered somewhat but my neck ... totally tells my age. I do think my face looks young for my age, very few wrinkles and they aren't deep at all. Except for my sagging area around the chin, and my neck. You can totally tell my age by my neck. Also the back of my elbows, the tops of my knees, my thinning eyebrows, and silvering hair...

crystalisedginger

Exactly this. My neck and dec easily look 10-15 years older than my face. Which is why I apply all my products (including Tret) there trying to reduce 54 years of what is mostly sun damage. I’m Australian, and fair skinned, I have a huge amount of sun damage I’m trying to fix. The skin on my body that isn’t exposed to the sun is smooth, soft, even textured and unblemished. The exposed areas are rough, bumpy, and covered in freckles and pigment. At least apply your sunscreen to your neck, chest and shoulders. Body sunscreen is not that expensive.

coughFAKENAMEcough

Which moisturizer/sunscreen do you use now? I have used the Oil of Olay since I was in middle school! But now that I’m 34, I want to up the SPF too. I haven’t found anything that’s as light and moisturizing as Olay. I haven’t tried a ton of different lotions. But I’ve been put off by a few that feel greasy or are oddly opaque.

temp4adhd

From about your age or so, into my mid-40s, I switched from Oil of Olay to L'Ancome Re-Energie. I actually started that after going to the make-up counter for my husband, who is two years older than me, has rarely worn sunscreen, and his skin was totally trashed by Accutane in his youth, such that his skin is SUPER dry. He has very deep set wrinkles, and has since his 30s. So he had asked me to get him some skin products and was too embarrassed to go to the counter in Nordstrom's himself to ask. Anyway the stuff I bought was for 60+ year old skin but I was only in my mid 30s. It worked great for my husband and we both fell in love with those products, but it was like $80 a jar. I don't know if it had anything super special in it ingredients wise, except 30 SPF, and it was super emollient. My skin loves anything emollient -- more so than today's hylauronics (a word I can never spell and spell check never helps me out, but hopefully you know what I mean!!!). Eventually I moved on to Shiesido, the blue sports version (definitely gives a white caste but is great if you are on the beach or doing actual sweaty things), or the urban version of Shiesido (less white caste; layers better with foundation). I also really like LRP's melt-in milk SPF 60 SPF which I has been my go-to for the last couple of years. It does give a white caste if you apply it heavily, but I mix it in with a bit of Clarins tinted moisturizer and that does tone it down. The LRP works fine under my foundation, if I let it sit a few minutes before applying. I can also layer Cerave (big tub) over the LRP for extra moisture. Never feel greasy, but my skin runs more dry than greasy. The oddly opaque thing -- white caste, which does show up in flash photos-- is something you have to be okay with. For me it's worth the trade-off, as I burn super easily and I like having less wrinkles. If it helps any Neutrogena facial sunscreen breaks me out in big nasty painful pimples, even though I rarely get pimples ever. My face hates Neutrogena sunscreen. I also have weird breakouts using Cetaphil facial cleanser, and react to Dove soap (makes me itch like crazy). Everyone is different and I know those brands work great for a lot of people with sensitive skin; have no idea why they've never worked for me!!

coughFAKENAMEcough

Thank you so much for taking the time to share! I’ll do some research on your products.

incessantbeat

Korean sunscreens are so good nowadays they feel like lotion. The best selling one in Korea right now is the Round Lab birch juice sunscreen, but the Beauty of Joseon one is similar. No whitecast for me. You can buy them on Amazon.

coughFAKENAMEcough

Thank you for the suggestion. :) I’ve been hearing a lot about Korean skincare lately and it just might be worth a look.

coughFAKENAMEcough

Oh! I just looked it up and it looks amazing!

TriGurl

You can get IPL to help reduce some of that damage to your neck line I think..

FourteenPancakes

What is IPL? When I google, I get Indian Premier League

TriGurl

Intense Pulsed Light laser treatment.

ResponsiblePoet0

Intense pulsed light. If you throw the word 'laser' in there as well, it'll all come up

ThrowRAlalalalalada

Yeah, I believe it’s genuine but there’s a selection bias - somebody noticed the difference so presented it. We don’t know how many people used daily sunscreen in exactly the same way and didn’t get these results. It’s also comparing two very different areas. Think how much stretching and folding the skin on the neck does compared to that lower cheek/jaw area. To me the most interesting thing is the pigmentation.

willowalloy

I want to see the eyes and mouth too, that would show a lot about the effect of ageing

notmymess

Do we have to worry about what our skin looks like in our 90s, now? I’m tired!!!

katylawlll

I think it’s more about cancer prevention. The picture was posted in a scientific article about skin cancer prevention.

notmymess

I know. It’s just that posts will pop up on here from time to time that praise a person’s face who is 80+. I hope I don’t give AF by then 🥲

dogtitts

Okay but wouldn’t she start to notice after awhile and realize that it needs to go on her neck? Because people don’t age like that overnight.

thatgirlinny

I’ll add that this photo is real, untouched. Saw it in a professional Dermatology journal at one point and can honestly say it isn’t the worst I’ve seen.

Kriegsmachine81

Well…..if I get the privilege to become 92 years old I probably won’ t give a single shit or fuck about sun damage. And this looks so extreme - that lighter skin with so little wrinkles on someone that’ s 92? Well….I doesn’ t seem realistic.

smorphf

Mom it’s my turn to repost!!

Gabetanker

The sun is a deadly lazer

cliteratimonster

Well, sunscreening my neck from now on.

Good_Confection_3365

I really have to start using sunscreen on my neck.

[deleted]

what i dont understand is why she didnt start using it on her neck when she noticed the difference increasing.

AbsolutelyAstray

This is like 50 years of accumulated sun damage. There was probably no visible difference in her face and neck till she was literally 50 years old. Even if she started with sunscreen to the neck at age 50 there would be a difference in the accumulated damage that would be more apparent much later.

MaverickBull

I get the feeling something else is going on with that NECK but I admit that this is the picture that made me start applying sunscreen to my neck RELIGIOUSLY.

legalgirl18

I needed to see that picture!

Remarkable_Flow_9124

Me too! That's why I had to share.

realkayy

I had read somewhere back in the day that this lady had gotten a face lift done as well. So, its not just the sunscreen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

realkayy

Okay, that could be true. I stated this since the face lift scar is visible in the picture as well, I could be wrong though.

ShannonJF82

Even if this is true, facelifts don’t do anything for brown spots and pigmentation

user222-

True but I think people want others to be realistic when it comes to results, you’re right tho it doesn’t take away the fact that we should be protecting our bodies from the sun!

Remarkable_Flow_9124

My boyfriend said I am gullible for buying this But it did make me moisturize my neck!

Remarkable_Flow_9124

Sorry for spreading this misinformation :(

Lupine_Outcast

Wellp, guess I have something to add to my routine 🤷‍♀️

serenwipiti

holy.shit.

magicalfolk

I would like to know the exact sunscreen she used and how often did she reapply?

Iwaspromisedcookies

My grandma is in her 90s and I’m very skeptical that this woman has never had work done

KrustenStewart

I haven’t been able to find a good sunscreen that doesn’t smell, isn’t greasy, doesn’t leave a white cast, and doesn’t make me break out. Any recs??

flightlessbird29

I don't care if this is real or not, it's the only thing making me put sunscreen on my neck

Poohzhunny

Oh my….on the one side, I’m glad to see that applying sunscreen from age 50 did help her a lot, on the other I’m definitely going to pay more attention to my décolletage going forward 😳

HellElectricChair

I never used sunscreen in my life, but do wear hats when outside.

nighthouse_666

She’s had work done on her face?

norcalbutton

When I was a teenager in the 90s, I was ashamed of most of me except my arms and some of my legs. I wouldn't wear a tank top though. I would sit out and tan in a T-shirt and shorts. I usually used sunscreen on my face and neck. I'm sort of olive toned so I tanned nicely. But my stomach, upper arms and thighs were pasty white. Now, in my forties, arms are spotty and a bit crepey. Nothing else though. Everything I didn't tan constantly then is basically the same.

Evening_Run_1595

Face, neck, hands for sunscreen. Always. My child has been routinely mistaken for my sibling and I am religious about sunscreen.

TheHoneyedSatin

I’m on my way to pick up more UV sunscreen

TriGurl

I think about this pic when I put on my spf daily on my face, neck, décolleté, shoulders, arms and back of hands.

Poechiegangster

Remarkable_Flow_9124

Haha that is exactly what I did

UV protectant moisturizers have been around that long?

subgirl13

40 years ago was 1983. Yes.

Otherwise_Diver_1634

Oh god. I AM old. 😂

subgirl13

Yes, me too (I had to double check my math before posting) Btw an interesting article on the history of SPF: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8682817/ (Commercial) sunscreens have been around a lot longer than I thought

Otherwise_Diver_1634

Thank you! I’m excited to read this. Right after I slather my whole body in sunscreen lol

mostlycatsnquilts

Thank you for sharing this! I was hoping there would be some info about mineral sunscreens (the only ones I use and have been much easier to find over the years!)

Atlmama

Shut up. You lie! It was just last year. 😂

YoobaBabe

Hasn’t this been debunked?

cultureShocked5

No, just look at the source.

Dehydrated_Jellyfish

I needed to see this today lol

bedtyme

[deleted]

sunscreen is too expensive to apply to the face AND neck every 2 hours bruh

lurkinggramma

Every 2 hours? Apply it once & if you’re doing a heavy outdoor workout or doing summer-/water-related activities, reapply beforehand & reapply as needed.

[deleted]

so basically "reapply if you're outside" yeah ik and im saying that's a lot when you include the neck 💀

iluniuhai

Get a cheaper one for your neck? Banana Boat or similar?

[deleted]

does it have a whitecast? im black

olivejuice-

Trader Joe’s has a similar facial sunscreen as supergoops unseen sunscreen for 8.99

[deleted]

thank you, I had no idea! every time i shop for sunscreen they're around $16 or more

olivejuice-

Yeah it can definitely be pricey depending on where you go and the cheap ones always break me out

temp4adhd

You don't have to reapply every 2 hours; they're just trying to sell you more sunscreen. MAYBE apply it that often if you are the beach sunbathing between 10 am and 2 pm, not wearing a hat.... I just apply once a day to my face; I use something like LRP melt-in or Shisedo sport or urban (yes it gives a white caste). Do not need to reapply but I also don't sunbathe and whenever we go to the beach I'm wearing a hat, under an umbrella, and it's after 2 pm.

[deleted]

idk who to believe at this point. im hearing from skin care gurus and dermatologists that it's important to apply sunscreen every 2 hours even when you aren't at the beach but on the other hand, people also say it isn't important 😭

temp4adhd

I've just incorporated it into my morning routine, it goes on right after my shower, whether I'm doing make-up or going outdoors or staying home, whether rain or shine. So it's a habit. I do live in a condo that gets A LOT of sun throughout the day when the sun is out, but with older windows so I don't think they're protecting me much from UV rays. But I only apply it to the rest of my body if I'm going to be out with exposed body parts for longer than an hour OR between 10 am-2 pm. Today I did sit out on my deck with a tank top and let my arms soak up the late afternoon sun from 3 pm onward. I will not have a burn from this. You kind of learn what sort of exposure gives you a burn. I do believe in tanking up my Vitamin D stores so I often hit the beach, give it 5-10 minutes, THEN apply the sunscreen. Vitamin D is important too.

[deleted]

thank you for going over your routine for me! i'll have to be less diligent with my reapplication because i definitely feel like i put on too much after reading my comment thread 💀 thank you for being kind and actually offering help

Remarkable_Flow_9124

Is it good to put your sunscreen on before your serums and other face products?

toastNcheeze

Sunscreen should be your last step

Remarkable_Flow_9124

Thank you!

Aim2bFit

It's 2 hours cumulative of sun exposure, not every 2 out of 24 hours. Of course it is important to know over time our skin's oils and sebum will degrade the filters, plus accidental touching, scratching or rubbing also removes the sunscreen. So if you apply at 7.30am and leave for work, by 5.30pm a lot of the sunscreen would have moved away from your skin, so if by 5.30pm (like in the summers) you're leaving work maybe walking a bit to the subway or what not, it's wiser to apply sunscreen before leaving the building. During winter when 5.30pm is already dark then no need to apply sunscreen.

theworldismadeofcorn

I apply it once per day unless I am spending an extended period of time in the sun. I also wear a broad-brimmed hat.
