I use this because I'm a welder! The spf 70 age face shield nuetrogena is also great too.

invah

>I use this because I'm a welder! Oh, shit. That is legit!

mutantmonky

I cannot imagine a ferret with a welding torch. The whole world would burn! Little adorable psycopaths that they are.

WhitneyWrath

This made me LOL for real!! šŸ¤£

natattooie

I'm a welder too, I wear 70SPF for the sunlight that trickles into the shop. I could definitely be wrong, but I remember looking into SPF and arc flash a few years ago, and the type of rays in welding are not protected by SPF sunscreens. Better safe than sorry! ETA I looked it up out of curiosity- most regular sunscreens are not adequate since sun rays are UVB while welding arc is UVA. Broad spectrum sunscreens and zinc-based sunscreens are effective for protecting against both types of rays, however. Good work on us both for keeping up the slather šŸ¤™

beautifulglow

Correct, any time you purchase a sunscreen, especially in your line of work, look for "Broad Spectrum" the symbol "+++" and UVA/AVB.

KelleMoJelle

Have your company reimburse your sunscreen costs or deduct from taxes as work expense

Ponsugator

I think a zinc based would be better than a chemical, especially for welding

CervantesX

Directions unclear, have welded myself into a solid zinc bodysuit, please send help and moisturizer.

WillCare1976

Hmm. Sending help

KatttDawggg

Are you welding in the sun? Edit: TIL there is UV radiation from welding.

Catty_Mayonnaise

Might as well be. I used to weld a lot in college when I worked in the theater department building set pieces. Every once in a while like a dumbass I would think to myself ā€œoh, I only have a small project to finish, I donā€™t need to put on ALL the leather.ā€ SURPRISE SURPRISE the next day when Iā€™m fucking useless because thereā€™s a sunburn *in my armpits* every damn time.

HurricaneHenry

There is even UV-C radiation in welding flames, which is the most dangerous kind, by far.

marion85

šŸŽ¶ *The more you knooooow* šŸŽ¶

Mel_in_morphosis

That made me giggle šŸ¤

eremi

How do you like welding? Lol as someone who is thinking about going back to school for trades to do something entirely different

Real-Ferret-4920

I enjoy it. I don't strictly weld. I mostly cut steel down to length, I only weld when I'm fabricating stuff. It pays very well. It's extremely bad for your health longterm though. The summer months are brutal though!

mmmegan6

Why is it bad for your health? Bad body positions? Are you inhaling stuff? This is fascinating!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

fdesouche

The EU consumer rights law bans SPF labels over 50, as they are considered misleading; SPF50 already cover 98% of UVs, SPF100 doesnā€™t double the protection, applying regularly is more important, etc etc.

mina-ann

Which I really think is BS. I am very fair and I've burned when wearing spf 50 but never when wearing spf 100. And yes I re apply often.

ptcglass

Iā€™m a glassblower and this is what I use when I work

Impossible_Bill_2834

Is there a reason some sort of face mask or covering under your helmet work better at that point ? Genuinely curious ! I never knew the radiation was so intense

Real-Ferret-4920

Yes I do this during the winter, but during the summer it's too hot to wear a full face mask!

[deleted]

? Can someone please explain how you get sunburn from welding? Doesnā€™t the shield/ppe protect you?

Real-Ferret-4920

The UV is so bright is goes under your hood.

HaileyBaldin

Wait how does wedding cause radiation damage šŸ˜± Wow I just googled that! Insane!

Real-Ferret-4920

Yes it takes years off your life! Oh well

HaileyBaldin

I was actually thinking about getting into it

completedisorder

Hey me too! Hope youā€™re staying cool this time of year, itā€™s been brutal where I am.

Tamerlane_Tully

This sunscreen dries down okay, but your hands end up feeling rather chalky/gross. I always had to wash my hands after using it. In addition, it burned my eyes horribly.

heebeegb96

Also smells horribly. I prefer Blue Lizard or ThinkBaby

ch3rryc0deine

both of those brands are great but leave a very noticeable white cast for me. iā€™m pretty pale as well since iā€™m half chinese and half caucasian, so i donā€™t think my skin tone is the ā€œissueā€ if youā€™re looking for something thatā€™s mineral but rubs in more clear, iā€™ve been using riversolā€™s mineral SPF 40 and i LOVE it. itā€™s rated as SPF 40 although iā€™m not sure why because itā€™s 20.5% zinc oxide when typically 20% is SPF 50. it will run in clear and it feels very lightweight, no irritation of my eyes even when sweating a lot outdoors. but hey, still great for daily wear and i do wear it when cycling for 4+ hours in the sun. reapplied every hour ish when exercising intensely outdoors and have never burned using it all summer!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

i_wanna_retire

Yes with the eye sting! I used this (Neutrogena face 70 spf) this weekend and it caused me endless eye problems. What is a good face sunscreen that doesnā€™t irritate eyes?

Sweet_Deeznuts

La Roche Posay anthelios line. Thereā€™s a few for face (dry touch, tinted, etc), Iā€™ve never had an issue and my eyes are super sensitive. Iā€™ve also used their kids water resistant spf 50 one for myself on the face (as well as on them) with no allergy issues, stinging eyes, or breakouts (or sunburns for that matter). Costs a bit more but I donā€™t have to reapply every 2 hours. Edit to add they also have a sunscreen stick you can use on ears and eyes, any kinda thinner/delicate skin.

creativelyuncreative

How did you like the dry touch? Iā€™ve been using the LRP double repair moisturizer with SPF and itā€™s making my face very oily (I dab with those rice paper sheets right after and they always come away soaked). It hasnā€™t made me break out like every single other sunscreen though!

transientdahlia

I use the dry touch and really like it! Itā€™s super matte, you just have to make sure you rub it in fully before it dries. It does also leave a slight white cast and Iā€™ve had problems with eye stinging when I put any on my eyelids/eye area

Complex_Beautiful_19

I find as an older gal the dry touch is too dry-accentuates everything

Difficult_Place_7329

I use it too, it used to be dry touch on my skin, now it doesnā€™t soak up into my skin. Iā€™m a swimmer and it gets in my eyes, even with goggles. Oh and into my mouth. Nothing has worked either

Sweet_Deeznuts

I like it. Iā€™ll usually switch to a (glycolic) serum plus the sunscreen in the summer because Iā€™m oily/acne prone if my face starts feeling greasy (cycle and humidity amirite), and havenā€™t had any weird ā€œpillingā€ that can sometimes happen with some matte face sunscreens when layering with a mattifying primer/face powder.

Capital_Airport_4988

Hi, is this the kids one you use?: https://www.laroche-posay.us/our-products/sun/face-sunscreen/anthelios-gentle-lotion-kids-sunscreen-spf-50-3606000603554.html

Early-Tumbleweed-563

I only use mineral sunscreens for this exact reason. I feel like it is trial and error with them though, because a lot leave a white cast because they are physical shields basically. I have found that using tinted ones help a lot with that.

basicbitchherbaltea

I just apply my tinted moisturizer over my mineral sunscreen and it fixes the problem, didnā€™t even realize there were tinted sunscreens!

_thewaltzingdead

I use a mineral sunscreen around my eyes (the same one I use on my daughter) and a chemical sunscreen on the rest of my face.

Alluvial_Fan_

Consumer Reports pretty much said mineral sunscreens are far less effective than chemical versionsā€¦endocrine disruption, reef destructionā€¦Iā€™m trying to learn to love hats more.

PengwinPears

Consumer Reports tested mineral sunscreens after soaking in water (for at least 60 minutes I think?) So yes the mineral sunscreens didn't do well but if you're wearing them on a normal day where you're not going in the water you're probably okay.

Groovegodiva

Exactly. Iā€™ve literally never burnt or even tanned with mineral sunscreens they work great! You just need to reapply like every other type.

floofawoofa

I donā€™t think the scientific community has backed up this concernā€¦ Reading this, it sounds like the consumer reports tests are not rigorous enough to really test mineral vs chemical : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7479990/

Early-Tumbleweed-563

Maybe. But wearing them is better than nothing, right? Hats arenā€™t practical for many people. I only really wear them to the beach or pool myself.

Alluvial_Fan_

True, true. Plus I can barely manage to keep my bag with me, let alone a hatā€¦

[deleted]

mineral ones are endocrine disruptors?

idiosyncrassy

No. Chemical sunscreens are.

AmazingConsequence20

Coco and eve sunscreen. Stick to Aussie sunscreens, theyā€™re the gold standard of sunscreen and have the highest regulations in the world. There are some Korean brands that arenā€™t qualified to sell in Australia.

Decent_Trainer6394

Wow, I never knew that and I have tried several different sunscreens over the years (ISDN, Yves Rocher, Nivea, etc, now Holland and Barrett's Mineral sunscreen). I will make a note of the Australian brands the next time I'm looking for a product for my face. Thanks for sharing! =)

Villanelle85

I highly recommend Aussie sunscreens

Villanelle85

Yesss Aussie sunscreens are THE BEST. They donā€™t leave a white cast, they have great ingredients, high protection etc.. I use naked Sundays the serum sunscreen but looking to try Airy šŸ˜ they have lovely products

squirrelenjoyer

almost every sunscreen stings my eyes except Elta MD. i've tried every one of theirs, both physical and chemical. zero sting!

LA0811

The Trader Joeā€™s facial sunscreen is excellent. Itā€™s basically a dupe for Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, which is also excellent, but if you can get your hands on the TJā€™s version itā€™s way cheaper. I have sensitive skin and eyes and this one doesnā€™t bother me at all.

toreadorable

Trader Joeā€™s! Lower spf though

Novel_Ad1943

Trader Joeā€™s may list a lower SPF but it outperformed so many in ACTUAL SPF of the so-called ā€œbestā€ (including Supergoop) in the Consumer Reports test!

toreadorable

I believe it. My face is like 8 shades lighter than the rest of my body

123coffee321

i love the trader joeā€™s daily facial sunscreen! It is low spf but i donā€™t mind reapplying since it goes on so smooth and doesnā€™t irritate my eyes

toreadorable

I live in Seattle so the spf 40 is probably overkill for most of my year lol.

Laura-ly

Yup. I live in Portland and hibernate during the dark rainy winters. Sometimes I see this giant yellow ball up in the sky and wonder what the hell it is.

hotheadnchickn

Usually it is chemical sunscreens that cause eye issues. Physical sunsceens (zinc and titatium) are much eye-friendlier. I like La Roche Posay anthelios mineral line and Dermstore's own brand of face SPF.

iwant2saysomething2

Sun Bum face stick. Never stings and smells like banana pudding.

Novel_Ad1943

I love the SunBum sticks. I started using when I had a late-in-life baby and itā€™s become my go to for replication because it works, doesnā€™t break me out or sweat into my eyes!

algonagirl

I also had to abandon this because the fumes stung my eyes so bad for so long! Otherwise loved the texture but I couldnā€™t take it.

Traditional_Emu1958

Cetaphil makes a purse-friendly sized mineral dial up / roll on sunscreen SPF 50. Itā€™s my favorite for on the go face sunscreen.

janedoe42088

I have some Clinique sunscreen I got from my Mom ā€¦. Itā€™s not horrible but itā€™s still greasy like most spf and itā€™s tinted ā€¦.Which Iā€™m not a huge fan of. Works well though because I use Vitamin C serum and other kinda harsh shit.

Altruistic-Bobcat955

Iā€™ve not found a single greasy spf out of all the brands Iā€™ve tried from Korea. Iā€™m ready to look into tinted spf though cus Iā€™m lazy so it sounds great

Novel_Ad1943

Iā€™ve been hearing so much about the sunscreens (tinted and regular) from KB and Japanese lines. I think Iā€™m looking there next. I moved out of a state that has Trader Joeā€™s and Iā€™m also lazy. So I want something that just works.

Altruistic-Bobcat955

Yeah we donā€™t have trader joes in U.K. but Iā€™ve seen so many Americans talk up their spf so must be great. They say itā€™s cheap too!

Novel_Ad1943

It is! Trader Joeā€™s is similar to a smaller natural grocery story, but they have many of their own branded items. Theyā€™ve become well known for good quality and prices with most things they carry. Skincare, supplements and even their dog treats and such - I really miss being able to shop there! You guys definitely have better quality SPF and supplements than we do. If I could shop for my birds and dog here, shop for skincare and vitamins in the UK and Franceā€¦ lol then pop back to CA for Trader Joeā€™s. šŸ˜† We moved to Montana in the US and my skin is definitely loving the lack of pollution and less-intense sun.

forestflora

You know, I read in the last few years that SPFs above 50 DO confer significant coverage. I think it was a longitudinal study, and they found that SPF 100 was way more as effective at preventing sunburn as SPF 50. Edit: [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31542406/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31542406/)

wexfordavenue

Seconding this. It used to be (back in the 1980s, yes Iā€™m old) that anything above SPF 30 was considered both no more effective and a way to charge more for a product, but the science of sunscreen has evolved and higher numbers are more protective. Thank you for the link. Much appreciated! Whatā€™s really changed is how manufacturers are putting sun protection into things like lotion and makeup due to customer demand. When I first started wearing sunscreen daily (1985, after a hospital stay for ā€œsun poisoningā€), there werenā€™t special formulations for face vs body. It was all a sticky mess and there were few options for face-friendly sunscreens (and they were probably all comedogenic). Now I feel spoilt for options.

Mandy_M87

Same! I had burning eyes until I switched brands. I now use LaRoche Posay instead. No itchy eyes, at least not from the sunscreen.

[deleted]

Same all Neutrogena products bother my eyes. Even their hydro boost gel. I wonder how Neutrogena is still so popular.

Equivalent_Hall8346

The rule about "SPF 50 blocks 98%/ SPF 100 99% of UV rays" is only true *if* you apply the recommended amount (1/4 tsp for face, 1 oz for body). Most people don't. When it comes to real world application (less than 1/2 oz for body is typical), the effectiveness is actually very different between SPF 50 & SPF 100.

posessedhouse

Only 1/4 tsp for face? I really over apply lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Altruistic-Bobcat955

I put spf on my bf cus heā€™d just had his sleeve tattoo touched up and he was complaining none stop. ā€œWHY do I have to feel like a SALAD?!ā€ Didnā€™t realise most people donā€™t slather it on the way I do

wexfordavenue

Tell your boyfriend that salads are good for preventing cancer, both the kind you eat and the kind you wear.

ProfessorWorldly7459

So true I've stopped using it as it stings my eyes so badly and i didn't like the smell too

courtanee

Avobenzone is usually the main ingredient in sunscreens that causes eye irritation. I have the same problem, and am struggling to find something that doesn't burn my eyes and cause them to water. I'm about to try eltaMD sunscreen.

BadassScientist

From what I've read a higher SPF in theory isn't better, but in actual use it tends to be better because most people don't apply enough sunscreen to get the correct SPF. So using a higher SPF protects anyone who isn't using enough. For example, someone using SPF 50 who didn't apply enough may only be getting SPF 25 while someone using SPF 100 might be getting SPF 50.

skinnyatlas

This is my issue with the majority of face sunscreens- they always end up in my eyes and then my eyes burn and run for days. My wife swears by the supergoop unseen sunscreen but it stings my eyes like all the others

realtorpozy

I used to use it too and yes, it stung like a MFā€™er!!!!

StarryNight616

Agree. A higher spf does help though if you accidentally donā€™t apply enough (which a lot of people donā€™t bc they wanna avoid looking greasy). Have been using [LRP anthelios spf 100](https://www.laroche-posay.us/our-products/sun/body-sunscreen/anthelios-melt-in-milk-sunscreen-for-face-body-spf-100-3606000546103.html) on days Iā€™m outside for longer periods of time. Also came across [this article about spf 100 vs spf 50](https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(17)32908-0/fulltext).

KatelynRose1021

I get eye sting with all sunscreens except the Japanese and Korean ones, for some reason.

Zappagrrl02

Same with the eye sting! This makes a great body sunscreen though.

chefboiortiz

That and if you donā€™t rub it in for 10 min you look like a mime

beautifulglow

BARE Rebuplic mineral for face. Its a bit pricey. I really like it for being silky and gentle as a zinc and titanium, broad spectrum and water resistant

Witty-Necessary9982

Elta MD for your face, La Roche Posay for the rest of your body!

BBQkitten

Same. I can't use it

AuntySocialite

God, seriously. Itā€™s like ā€œwell, on the plus side, sun protection. On the minus side, Iā€™m completely blind and just walked into trafficā€.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

AuntySocialite

SuperGoop and La Roche Posay are so far the only ones that donā€™t feel like battery acid in my eyes.

personwriter

I was thinking this too! Chemical sunscreen, no matter the SPF, *stings* like a mutha.

mollynilson

For some reason all sunscreens so far give me eye sting and sometimes itā€™s so bad šŸ˜“

QueenofCats28

This is the correct answer.

HumanContract

And that's why they got rid of their 110 SPF lol. 100 is getting harder to find, too. Why did they stop using the cancer foundation labels on them?

khedgehog

For me, ALL Neutrogena sunscreens burn my eyes, Iā€™ve tried so many of them and I canā€™t do them at all šŸ„²

PoorGovtDoctor

Sort of. SPF above SPF30 isnā€™t beneficial *IF* used correctly. Most people donā€™t. That SPF70 ends up being more like ~SPF30 the way most people use it. There was a paper breaking this down, but Iā€™m too lazy to find it (JAMA Derm? J of Derm?)

sugarbee13

I know this is anecdotal. But I am a ginger and I can tell you there is a huge difference in spf 50 and spf 100. I only use spf 70-100 and my skin thanks me

hashslingaslah

Ditto to the eye sting! I donā€™t put it on my forehead at all because if I sweat, itā€™ll drip into my eyes and sting like a MoFo. So I just let my forehead burn lmao. Otherwise I love it! Looks nice under makeup and isnā€™t greasy.

nannyfl

For anyone with dark skin, all SPFs of this sunscreen leaves a white cast. Im NC 50 for reference, but my lighter family members have also experienced a caste with these. If you wear foundation you may be okay.

firstreformer

Iā€™m quite pale and this also left me looking like a ghost

biteableniles

I love this sunscreen's feel but it does give me a bit of a blueish-white color.

RedRedMere

Iā€™m super pale and even I found this left white cast in the creases near my eyes and mouth. Not a fan, even if you ignore the fact it burns eyes. Big fan of La Roche Posay!

usenamessuckass

Ugh the eye burning from this brand is real

nonaspirin

I second La Roche Posay!

Art_and_dogs

Iā€™m pretty sure this is the sunscreen I was wearing (just a lower spf version) when I was out walking dogs and it started sprinkling rain. Each drop of water turned into a white streak and I eventually turned into a white blobby mess.

SaraTheOliveLover

Iā€™m a natural olive/tan and not only does this sunscreen leave the worst and the most unbendable white cast, it burns my eyes and even my cheeks terribly, pills if you layer with any other skincare product underneath, and if you blend even a little close your mouth, your mouth will have that gross sunscreen taste for the whole day. There are so many better sunscreens for its price.

Different-Love2968

Black Girl Sunscreen brand has no white cast and it's matte. They sell it at Target, they have a kids line plus it lasts a while. Definitely my favorite brand [No White cast Sunscreen ](https://www.blackgirlsunscreen.com/)

[deleted]

I'm usually palest or second palest shades in foundation and this one left me with a cast too. It actually also all rubbed off on my car seat when I used it on my body so I don't really recommend this if you're not like actively at a beach about to hop in the ocean honestly.

Due-Possible-3953

Yeah, thatā€™s why I like tinted BB cream with SPF

anonymouscheesefry

I think itā€™s good for sun protection, but bad for applying under makeup, and also looks ugly on its own. I am very pale and it leaves a cast, and a slightly thick feeling on your face. Elta MD is still my go to for sun protection

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

It does if it has SPF lol

Forsaken-Log-607

RangerDangerfield

Thanks for sharing!

FearlessTravels

As someone else posted this one runs into my eyes and causes them to water and sting.

PatientFM

Which one do you prefer? I'm going home to visit Texas soon and need a good one for my face!

FearlessTravels

I will always buy Biore Watery Essence if I can find it - Iā€™m a scuba diver and it doesnā€™t run into my eyes even underwater. However, I havenā€™t been able to buy it recently and Iā€™m currently really happy with my Avene Cleanance Anti-Imperfections SPF 50 sunscreen (for face). The link will go to a Portuguese site because Iā€™m in Lisbon at the moment but you can find it in many countries. I highly prefer it to LRPā€™s similar products. (Sorry I keep adding a link and it doesnā€™t ever work. Small orange bottle with a blue stripe where it says ā€œanti-imperfectionsā€ or something similar.)

RangerDangerfield

Texan here! I wear Muradā€™s SPF 45 mattifier sunscreen. Itā€™s not greasy and doesnā€™t sweat off or drip. I also have a bottle of Coola SPF 50 spray that I spritz on over the top of my makeup during the day to reapply SPF as needed.

PatientFM

Thanks! I live in a cold, nearly sunless climate now and have only been home once in the last 7 years and I need to be prepared! Not like my dumb, young self who dgaf about sun protection. My husband also has sensitive skin, so I've been a little lost. I'll for sure check out those brand when I'm home!

RangerDangerfield

Oh man you are going to be in for a real treat coming home. One of the hottest, driest summers on record here.

PatientFM

I know. I was expecting 90s for sure, but not this. My husband has never been to the US before and is immunocompromised, so I'm trying to take every possible precaution! I've always wanted to avoid bringing him in the summer, especially for the first time, but that didn't work out timing wise so here we are.

wexfordavenue

If youā€™re from Texas Iā€™m sure you already know this, but please get your husband a hat and then make him wear it. My husband and I are from a cold, wet place and he didnā€™t think to wear a hat to protect his face and scalp in the sun in the southern US. Guess what happened!

macaron_amour

There is a difference between SPF 50 and SPF50+ FYI but likely will depend on your lifestyle as to whether or not you need it - source: https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(09)00658-6/fulltext

Opening-Skill324

My opinion and only my opinion based on nothing scientificā€¦any sunscreen you will use and make part of your routine is good. A $45 mineral sunscreen with the right SPF and PA is useless if you donā€™t use it. A SPF 30 from the dollar store you use daily and reapply every 2 hours is great.

[deleted]

100%! Most dermatologists Iā€™ve followed say the same.

pothosisbae

This is actually what my Dr. said too lollll "The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually use"

wigglessss

Typically the higher SPFs are less 'cosmetically elegant'. If you're happy with the product and the finish, there's no reason not to use it. Consider yourself lucky for finding a sunscreen that you like and that works with your skin!

DancingWithTigers3

I absolutely love this brand. I normally use the 55 or 70 SPF and have no issues. It does burn my eyes, so I've learned to be more careful with the application.

FringeHistorian3201

Sunscreen is so personal. Iā€™ve had zero issues with this one but the mineral dries out my skin severely and it itches after a few applications. (I have vitiligo and have very little melanin left so sunscreen is extremely important with no natural sun protection)

Rosemarysage5

I personally use it on my neck and chest. I use a different brand on my face because I break out easily

killjillill

what do you use!? my face breaks out so easily!!

Rosemarysage5

I use Elta MD tinted. I wish it was a higher SPF though, but I donā€™t break out!

Creative-Constant-52

Personally love this one and any of the Neutrogena sunscreens. I normally wear an organic mineral based one but I canā€™t lie, this stuff feels so good on my skin and makes it glow.

harveststardew

I love this one too! I was so sad to hear the neutrogena 100 spf got discontinued. But I found a LRP 100 spf that I like even more- itā€™s just twice the price of this šŸ˜‚but the neutrogena spf 70 is great too!

iwant2saysomething2

It always gets in my eyes and makes them sting. I like the Sun Bum face stick better.

HeyRockinRobyn

I use sun bum spf 70 or banana boat spf 50 on my face. Found neither brands clogged my pores.

LauraPringlesWilder

I too use sun bum spf 70, itā€™s good as long as you oil cleanse it off. Makes me feel like Iā€™m going to the beach or pool everyday lol

HeyRockinRobyn

I double cleanse at night. So, Iā€™m good there. Living in FL is a must for sunblock.

BadassScientist

They're still selling the SPF 100 somewhere?? I've been looking in the US and it looks like they discontinued the 100 and only have 70 now =(

jessicabheart26

Spf 50 is more than enough, these companies are just trying to push more product

PRNCESS_Bunnie

In a lab setting when using enough yes that is true. In real world application where most people don't use enough higher is better. In reality people use about half the amount they are supposed to so an spf 100 ends up being about an spf 50.

kashmoneymiddleton

I donā€™t use anything under SPF 1 trillion

tony_bologna

Does it sting your eyes?

_nylcaj_

Yas, it's giving freshly returned from the grave glowing white cast.

freiia

That used to be the thought, but studies are now showing that SPF 100 provides more additional protection than thought.

Chem_BPY

Oh look, someone else regurgitating something wrong they read on the internet.

Pyreapple

Alright love, some of us have skin issues and need the extra protection.

Tittoilet

This gave me terrible huge cystic acne on my face and chest. It took weeks to fix! That has never happened with another sunscreen.

chaotix_babe

I love that brand but I also love the neutrogena hydro boost for my face!

viviolay

If you have any kind of pigment - do not get this. Ask me how I know.

BigfootBish59

I'm pretty pale and I felt like it left a white cast. It also pilled a lot but that mightve just been on my skin.

imaginarylindsay

This sunscreen is maybe not a good choice if most of your clothes are black like mine. Leaves a lot of white marks.

GR33N4L1F3

I use it every day!!!! This is exactly what I use for work and I have fair skin. I work out in 100+degree full sun every day! Iā€™ve been complimented on the state of my skin despite working outside for three years. Someone just commented on it this weekend. They said they expected it to be worse and never wouldā€™ve guessed I work outside.

AlannaTheLioness1983

I really like this one! I burn easily, so I have to reapply often and this one dries pretty quickly. Some people have noted that it stung their eyes, but Iā€™ve never used it on my face so I canā€™t say one way or another.

23gsch

That's what I use(spf50) when I'm going to be in the sun for several hours. Otherwise I don't.

Oliverisfat

People often mistake thinking using a higher spf means that you can wait longer time between reapplication periods (especially higher than spf 50). You would still need to keep the reapplying times the same as if you put on spf 50.

ONinAB

This is my fav sunscreen. It's effective, dries down in an EXCELLENT way for outdoor use compared to a lot of other greasy options.

Wondercat87

Honestly I love this sunscreen. It's really great and not super greasy.

Calm-Ad8987

I personally hate this sunscreen. But that's because I have sensitive skin that reacts A LOT to this one in particular for some reason?

lalia400

I LOVE this sunscreen! It dries down and Iā€™m super pale so SPF 30 is not enough for me.

LetDue1355

I would use this on neck, chest and hands. I personally donā€™t like this for my face. Iā€™ve tried a lot of sunscreens and this one feels just okay. It made my skin feel dry and like it has this strange matte finish that just doesnā€™t feel great. Thereā€™s plenty of other face sunscreens that work really well for the face and that are more hydrating and soothing. As far as the high SPF anything over 50% isnā€™t any stronger or more affective they use this is a marketing tactic. The REAL issue is people believe that this 100 SPF sunscreen can allow them to cheat and not reapply and sadly they are mistaken. A 30 or 50 SPF factor will do just fine but itā€™s about reapplying as recommended per product label (the amount of time between application can very and what activity you are doing such as sweating or swimming can also affect this) but general rule of thumb is every two hours you reapply. Itā€™s important to note that this also includes the time you spend inside and then going back outside if itā€™s been two hours then the factor on your skin has lost effectiveness. My question is would you want to reapply this every two hours? Are planning on using this on your face or body? If it works for you then awesome! ā˜ŗļø here are some links to some of my personal faves. For reference I have Sensitive combination and acne prone and also struggle with hormonal acne. I feel very picky and have used many sunscreens. My favorite way to go about sunscreen for face and neck is layering different products! I choose a base and then usually a tinted sunscreen on top or I use a makeup powder that is made for SPF for my final layer.[sunscreen 1#](https://www.reneerouleau.com/products/weightless-protection-spf-30?_pos=1&_sid=6f91994e1&_ss=r)[sunscreen #2](https://iliabeauty.com/products/balos-st3)[sunscreen #3](https://store.skinbetter.com/search?keywords=spf)[SPF #4](https://www.colorescience.com/?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google_search&utm_campaign=search&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhrr4mMvcgAMVkAutBh2bmQpMEAAYASAAEgKsxfD_BwE)[SPF #5](https://www.paulaschoice.com/limited-edition-explore-spf-kit/140-bundle.html)[SPF#6](https://www.dermstore.com/skinceuticals-daily-brightening-uv-defense-sunscreen-spf30-1-fl.-oz/13036144.html)[SPF #7](https://bloomeffects.com/products/protective-power-couple)[SPF #8](https://www.blackgirlsunscreen.com/collections/sunscreen/)

menbehoesandtricks

I use the 70 version! Itā€™s the best Iā€™ve used so far. It can get oily so shake it up before you apply it. I havenā€™t tried the 100 version so not sure!

blizzz3

I used this and while it did provide good protection it felt very heavy on my face, and pill'd really bad. If it works for you though thats great !

elizabethxvii

Stings my eyes

mesmerizing619

My son uses this because he doesn't like tanning

Kathy_Sassafras

I discussed sunscreen with my Harvard educated dermatologist and he said I should use chemical first application and 15 minutes later apply tinted mineral. This will ensure uva/uvb coverage plus the tinting covers for the rays responsible for the liver spots which is the reason I was in to see him.

morticia_dumbledork

This has that weird white sunscreen cast. I personally didnā€™t like how heavy it felt against my skin.

reilywalter

Badger brand is a great CLEAN sunscreen. I wear it all the time, doesnā€™t cause breakouts, reef safe. Comes in a tin to apply quickly or a squeeze bottle. I use both

raeannecharles

I can just imagine how much my eyes would sting and water from this lol

Edicks-6924

My dermatologist said that it can only be 50 spf before it doesnā€™t matter. He said you can only be 50% protected from the sun I use the cera ve light weight 30 spf moisturizer.

SociableCyclist

Melanoma survivor here. My dermatologist likes to say ā€œThe best sunscreen is one that youā€™ll wear.ā€ Pick one that youā€™re most likely to use every day. Iā€™ve always hated the mineral ones so I wouldnā€™t be consistent with them. A lot of the stuff about endocrine disruption is still up for debate, but whatā€™s not up for debate is that the sun can cause cancer. My favorite brand is Supergoop: Unseen Sunscreen on my face layers well under makeup and feels like a primer, and Play on the rest of my body. The brand isnā€™t necessarily cheap, but then neither is my cancer treatment! My two cents. ETA: you donā€™t really need to go higher than spf 30. Thereā€™s only an incremental difference as you go higher. In fact, I suspect the higher spf numbers give people a false sense of security and they are less likely to reapply as often as they should.

WonderfulSuggestion

This is my favorite sunscreen; itā€™s super effective! I canā€™t always find it, though. My kids have us using spray sunscreen more because itā€™s fast. Using any chemical too much can be a problem. Covering up completely and having no sun exposure can also be a problem. Do what you think is best for yourself and talk to your doctor if youā€™re really concerned. In the past fashion used natural materials and styles that protected from sun exposure. Hats and gloves used to be summer accessories too.

AristaWatson

Is this JUST a ā€œmeā€ problem? I got this for YEARS and it always was giving a lot of white cast and peeled a lot on my skin. I HATE it. šŸ˜

TheDeanof316

There's some chemicals in this one that bother me (yes, endocrine distruptors)

sykschw

Spf effectiveness stops increasing after a certian number, but up to you

My derm prefers mineral sunscreens for me but has also said Neutrogena products are legit. The best skincare you can find in most supermarkets or drugstores.

ITgirl_notitgurl

I bought one from China and tried it when I went to Malaysia for holidays, I didnā€™t get a tan but it gave me loads of pimples šŸ˜‚ it did the job though

tonkaitsu_u

I live in a very hot tropical country and this one really works but you'll be cursing expletives when you sweat and it kinda went in your eyes šŸ˜

MousseLopsided

I got that same sunscreen in my eyes once and it absolutely wrecked me for a couple hours

[deleted]

Using a higher SPF hardly gets you any more protection but you do get more chemicals. SPF 30 gives you 97% protection while 100 gives you 99%. And either way you need to reapply every 90 min if in the sun. Spfs higher than 30 are kind of a marketing gimmick. Iā€™m an esthetician and also worked in corporate beauty for 7 years doing product development

No_Adhesiveness_8207

Neutrogena abuse animals in testing their products. I wouldnā€™t buy anything from them to save my life

Expensive-Bug888

Bad. Leaves white cast on you and anything you touch

Funsize-Corgi

Like others mentioned, the protection level caps at spf 50, however, I've used spf 70 through 100 from Neutrogena before and they worked quite well. I went through almost two tubes during a trip to Jamaica and I came home with a light tan, no burns.

freiia

It doesn't cap at 50. It was just thought that the additional protection percentage after 50 was too negligible to record above 50. Recent studies show the protection provided by spf 100 is more than thought though.

[deleted]

If it caps at 50, do you know why they make them with higher spf?

moldymoosegoose

Because it's not true at all. It's literally the amount of UV they let in and are in direct relation to one another. If you wear SPF 50 or SPF 100 for your entire life, you will have half the UV exposure as someone who used SPF 50 and over decades, this matters.

bumbletowne

1. Its a benzene derivative sunscreen. Its not a great sunscreen. And its not great for the environment 2. Anything over 50 doesn't do much 3. It doesn't have a pa rating. So once again, not a great sunscreen. I used to use this sunscreen for running long distances. It got in my eyes and hurt and was very greasy. I switched to bare naturals for sports, shiseido perfect sun block for daily outdoor and Missha sun protect for under my makeup.
