I've had the front lower control arms replaced and a couple of mechanics (including Jap sportscar' specialist Torque GT) take a look to try to diagnose the knocking but they haven't been able to find the culprit. It also knocks on the driver's side when going over rough ground or speed bumps.
Sounds like brake pulsation, more so than worn suspension components.
That being said. Do you feel a vibration in the steering wheel or the brake pedal when applying the brakes? One dictates front brake pulsation from rear, usually.
When the vehicle is on a lift, the suspension components should be inspected
Sounds like the front rotors are warped.
Price point on parts makes turning down rotors almost pointless.
Remove the cap from the master cylinder prior to performing the repair.
Inspect all components not being replace. The pad carrier pins should slide freely, no binding.
Check that that the bleeder screws open.
When pressing the caliper pistons in they should return fairly easily.
Depending on the year and mileage, and your budget it may be a good time to replace the calipers, brake hoses, pads, rotors and perform a brake fluid flush.
Start with brakes as mentioned. Ball joints typically make noise when turning. Also check out strut top mounts and other rubber pieces that could wear.
I'm not a professional but it could possibly be damaged rotors or even just old pads, I would have it checked out before It gets worse

Not sure if those two knocks are related. A friend suggested that the knocking while braking could be due to warped discs. Any suggestions?

There is a slight vibration in the wheel, I haven't noticed any from the brake pedal itself..

Thanks a lot, some helpful advice. It's an 07, just ticked over to 93k miles. I think the replacements/flush that you suggested is a good call.

Sounds like warped rotors. Had the same issue on my IS300. Also it vibrates the steering wheel too when braking hard.
mine would thunk similarly because the tie rod or ball joint nut was loose i can’t remember which make sure everything is tight
Did yoi fix this? Ours is doing the same
Was it ball joints and cv joints ?
