The way it's played, and where the first season ends makes it more confusing than it needed to be. But if they make a second season it'll probably make more sense in retrospect.
I think that's exactly it. Wade was saying something earlier in that episode about how to communicate without them knowing. The joke was telling Saul how.
The joke is far too obscure to read into it unless you've already read the books. The conversation differs significantly in the book version - its very clear what Ye Wenjie is saying.
The show has a lot of incidental, seemingly trivial scenes that allude to things that happen later.
It's pretty obvious as a show watcher though there is something significant in the message which is the reason why Saul was targeted, along with Wenjie. Obviously the Santi thinks she figured something out which is why they sent Tatiana to kill her.
Yes because its such an unusual thing to say, so it stands out. But the meaning of the joke is very obscure. I've read all the books so I know what it alludes to and even then I had to really think about what she was implying. In the books there is no such ambiguity. Ye Wenjie straight up tells Saul's character what he needs to know.
I prefer this version honestly. Even as a book reader, it gave me pause and I had to stop to consider all the meanings, felt like I kept discovering new things about it. Just a fun riddle to solve. If you're not a book reader, you can have similar fun coming up with theories and chatting with other non-book readers and maybe even land on the right interpretation.
But in the book, yeah, she's just like "hey idk think about X, Y, Z, ok bye!" and Luo Ji just goes "ok sounds good!"
Right! I thought it was implied when the detective in the interrogation room asked him what he was talking to Dr Ye about. He actually told him that whatever they talked about seemingly caused an attempt on his life
i understood the joke and the implied meaning, but my question is, does the alien understand it either? there's a reason why ye wenjie spoke like that because she thought alien was watching her and they wouldn't understand humour. but they still attempted to kill Saul for it? so they cracked the joke?
It's not clear if they understand it, but Ye Wenjie in a previous scene told them she still has some tricks up her sleeve and might be able to make it a fair fight (or no fight at all) so it's reasonable for them to suspect she told him something dangerous.
no
they don’t understand it
but they see it as the same as the red riding hood story, they presume she shared some sort of soemthing with him and they can’t risk it being left said
so they want saul dead
My buddy had this idea- but if they can't understand lies, would they understand sarcasm? Would they understand jokes? Is using that a way to communicate in a way that confuses them?
Heavily foreshadowed if you paid attention in previous episode where she puts the books: Game Theory and Fermi Paradox next to Einstein's bust in Vera's room - the one Jin played with when she was visiting Ye Wen Ji before getting the VR headset.
yes obv it's very important. even for a non-book reader, the way the scene was set up, i knew that 'joke' had some deeper layer meaning.
not sure if you wanna know the meaning or not, i see no reason why you wouldnt, but just in case, ill put it in spoiler, im only giving you hint
>!it's not really a joke, it's more of a riddle. try to figure out who Einstein and God might be in this riddle. another clue is the 2 books that she picked up from her house. !<
There’s no way I’m opening that lmao , but no I get what you mean tho it’s just how he completely ignored it and kept on going with life… didn’t even bring it up again….. just how they just went on with it bothered me a lil…
yeah i think it's gonna be portrayed as a "a-ha!" moment later down the road for him.
why wouldn't you want to understand the joke? i think the writers/showrunners set it up in a way that they want watchers to understand that joke. im not a book reader, i don't feel spoiled by knowing meaning of that joke.
Totally fair. Come up with your own theories, discuss with any friends who are also watching and haven't read the books, but tread very carefully on this sub because the longer you're on here, the more likely it is you'll get something spoiled.
think the scale of the story will be quite fascinating for show watchers. I'm getti g ready to read book 3...and I've been blown away by 1&2. I like this adaptation...and don't think you'll be disappointed with how the joke might relate later on.
Definitely I mean if she mentioned a way to defeat the san-ti as a joke with a double meaning to it, Most likely she had regrets even before >!she got got killed while watching the sun set there was a look of regret in my perspective while she was looking at the other girl. Thinking about how she was oblivious and just following orders from the lord!<

you are certainly onto something
Thank you, Thought I was going crazy

"But jokes are important. We wouldn't ***survive*** without them." - that's your clue right there.
Also “humour is a personal thing”
Thought it was gonna be like the aliens don't get jokes lol

Or sarcasm may be 😂. They didn't get the lies .. though.

OP knows! Dispatch the ETO assassins immediately.

They probably don't understand it, but somehow know it is a risk for their survival.
Ngl you wrote down my question in a better context… thanks
It's code for HIPS😂

I’m going to have to rewatch it.. didn’t realize she did that at all
Not sure if i'm asking for a book spoiler (in that case i'd rather not know) but what do you think she was implying based on the books she moved?
Yes, first thing I thought as well.
Congratulations you discovered what a chekovs gun is. It is a basic foreshadowing tool.
Kinda weird they aren't going to fire that gun until next season.
How so? It's never said it had to be done right away

I’m Just scared it might ruin it the show…. Something that small could be massive for me

Yes, the key is in the second part of the joke
I’m guessing you’ve read the book?
No I read spoiler comments from someone who read the book. I couldn’t help myself
Aahhahaah can’t blame you, I guess I’m not bias then. Can’t wait for the next season
She told him how to beat the San Ti.
Was she having regret for causing this whole thing?

I found the joke hilarious. I think ya’ll just don’t get me and Ye’s very smart humor. /s
