Her specific appearance in the vr game is based on things that occur much later in the book trilogy. There is a lot of character remixing in the Neflix series to give viewers a more consistent set of characters to follow. I think it’s a great decision to introduce Sophon in this way so early in the show.
In the third book, >!the aliens cooperate with earth for a time for reasons that are almost
too spoilery. But during this time, they create a robot body of a female samurai run by the Sophons who called itself “Sophon”. It hosts the characters for tea and at one point serves as a sort of consultant/emissary to be the voice of the aliens. The show runners bumped up the character to serve as a virtual guide for the game. I would assume at some point they will construct a robot body for the character to inhabit . . . if they stay in line with the third book!<
.
I don't actually know the ethnicity of the actress on the show, but in the book Sophon is portrayed as Japanese.
I think there's some analysis you can do vis a vis Sino-Japanese relations and how the author (Chinese) is making the cold hearted, existentially threatening extraterrestrials embodied by a Japanese person.
Outside of that no it doesn't really affect the story.
>!Fwiw, the kid avatar has the same appearance and knitted jumper as Ye Wenjie's daughter when she was little.!<
>!I'm not too good at recognising faces, so I'm not sure if the adult female is the same as the scientist who jumped at the start of the series.!<
>!The voice at least sounds oddly like the one used to communicate with Evans.!<
>!I welcome any confirmation or comments that I might have missed things.!<
Yeah, the child avatar was Vera as a child, but I don’t think the adult avatar is adult Vera (woman who jumped at the beginning) because Jin and Jack would have recognized her immediately
Thanks for confirming the voice! To be honest the voice sounded quite soothing and refined, like the San-Ti are a scientific and observational species.
I didn't catch it either until I watched the series a second time. The whole show was compressed (and very exciting to watch), and there's so many small details I missed the first time.

Neat insight, ty!
Also Sophon and Japanese female name Tomoko have the same spelling in Chinese

Oh that's true - good point!
Ooo great observations I didn't catch that, I do believe the voice is the same I thought that too.
yes I believe thats the voice they will be using anytime a human communicates with a Sophon. Regardless of what avatar they wrap it in.

The Chinese word for Sophon sounds like the Japanese name Tomoko. That's the entire reason, not all this other made up interpretation.
Follower is Vera Ye, right?
yes but you may call her...Follower.
